Anytime we travel we try to find something new to try - and for Nebraska, all research pointed to runza runza runza. So, it was settled. Before we left Nebraska, we would be sure to try Runza. On our way out of town, we hit the drive thru for the classic sammie & opted to get a mushroom/swiss as well. When the bag was opened, the stench assaulted my nostrils - the car filled with nostalgia but zi had to be sure. I took a bite & was struck with the familiarity of White Castle. Is it an exact match? Server was patient as one of our group had gone to the restroom. He got a double cheeseburger and I decided on a spicy Jack burger. Frings because why not onion rings and French fries? No reason. The onion rings were so good. Onions crisp inside and not soggy. Fries were a little salty for me. The restaurant was clean and so was the women's restroom. My daughter and I stopped at this Runza on our way to Colorado last week because we were really hungry, (and there weren't any parking spots in the Raising Canes nearby.) This place was packed and slammed; super busy. We order our food and waited about 5-10 minutes for our food. The food was fresh, hot, and tasty, per normal Runza standards. I wouldn't have an issue stopping here again in the future. read more

What this country needs is more Runza locations. Whenever I'm passing through Iowa and Nebraska I have to stop at least one. If I could visit them more often I'd try more of their menu items but for now I have to get an original Runza every time. Decided on this venue because it's a NB thing. Son and I ordered the Runza combo. Food tasted good, it was decent. Service was through drive thru & everyone was friendly. 6-10 hours later, my son and I are both suffering what we can only think is food poisoning. It's awful. In a state with over 20 Runza's, I can't believe I've been to this location twice. I guess North Platte is just the perfect stop for me when driving from Denver to Omaha. Service was good. The workers there were friendly and took my order quickly. A Runza is basically like a hot pocket with ground meat and cabbage. Two Runzas filled me up and put me in a food coma as I was driving. I would've liked mine more if they didn't use as much salt. My wife liked hers with mushrooms. If in Nebraska, this is what you should be eating. On a cross country trip I vowed to eat a regional or local places only. Runza fit that description. I ordered the Mushroom Runza meal. It was simple. I think this must have been the loose meat sandwich that was referenced on the TV sitcom Roseanne. I think I got the onion rings and tea for my drink. Not quite sure I remember. I also got the smallest cone I could order because I don't need all too much dessert when I am just sitting all day driving. Anyway...the food was fine. No better or worse than subway or taco bell. I finally ate at Runza. Driving through Nebraska and always seeing the signs for them had me intrigued. I finally decided to try it out on my way to Colorado. I had the Cheeseburger Runza, Onion Rings and upgraded to a shake for $0.40. I reference the price because I'm not a pop drinker and thought it was really nice to be able to upgrade to a small shake for that little. (And the shake was surprisingly tasty) The Runza was tasty and kind of tasted like White Castle to me due to the onions. The onion rings were firm and tasted good, just not the best I have had from a fast food restaurant. Service was fine, I ordered ahead on the app and it was ready. On a recent trip from Des Moines IA to Littleton CO I saw several towns along the interstate in Nebraska offering Runzas. Hadn't had one in 30 years so on my way back to Des Moines I stopped in Gothenburg and picked up 6. (3 original & 3 mushroom Swiss.) The mushroom Swiss was to die for. Even better than I remembered so cap off to the Gothenburg employees for making an old memory into a current taste sensation. 5 frozen to be heated and enjoyed later this winter. We traveled to the beautiful state of Nebraska from Massachusetts. From my research Runza a beloved food in Nebraska! We were very excited to try this interesting sandwich. While traveling to North Platte, there was a Runza right off of the highway. Oh boy!!!! We were very hungry too, had been driving for about 4 hours. (Flew in from Boston to Denver, stayed in another section of Nebraska before the Runza experience) This place was packed I immediately thought I was going to be on for the best treat ever... A nice little teenager took my order, and I was eagerly awaiting this sandwich which I'd heard so much about!!! Sadly, my husband and I both found the food revolting.. I ordered the original, he got his with cheese. We also ordered onion rings. I am not a picky eater. I love basically everything. This sandwich tasted like a dirty diaper ( never tried a dirty diaper, but I imagine it would taste just like a Runza) Oh my gosh it was so gross. The bread was flavorless, there was some itty bitty bits of mystery meat in it, mixed with super disgusting cabbage. The onion rings were awful too. Tasted like frozen food. This is more of a review on "runza" as a food rather than this particular restaurant location. Being from out of town, we wanted to try some local cuisine. I don't even really know how to describe my experience, when I ate, it was very just meh, but after finishing it, and the more I reflected on it, the more angry at it I got. Runza really is just bland ground beef with wilted almost non-existent cabbage, steamed in what can only be described as a 6-in kolache bun. I think I'm mostly just mad that this is even considered food. Seems just like someone somewhere tried to make a thing and it ended up being passed down through generations and stuck. I'm not from the midwest, although I did live in Illinois for 1.5 years in the late 1970's. As a result, I learned about White Castle. Runza wasn't yet a thing in those days. Now, 40 years later, I live in the mountain west and have driven past Runza restaurants but never stopped in. Well, today we were returning from a road trip to Kearney and decided to have lunch at this location. I ordered the Runza with cheese; my wife passed on the beef and opted for the fish sandwich. First of all, my sandwich looked nothing like the photos on the menu (hah! now naive). It was soggy and smashed; as though it had been pre-made and left to fend for itself at the bottom of a stack of Runzas in a warmer. The flavor brought back memories of White Castle sliders, sadly. They said there were the number 1 burger in town and well I am sure they are but if you compare it to Burger King or any other fast food. I wanted something fast to eat so I went there. This must be a local fast food thing. I have never heard or seen one so I had to try it because that's what I do. They have this stuffed bread thing called a Runza. It's a bread roll stuffed with ground beef and there are several varieties. I chose the meat and cheese. Of course it doesn't look anything like the picture. It was very bready with minimal fillings. The flavor was just ok for me. I wished I had gotten a double cheeseburger instead. My wife got a burger and said she wished we would have gone to Burger King or McDonalds than this joint. If you ever find yourself in Nebraska, check this place out. I don't normally review fast food joints, but this place is absolutely delightful. The Runza Cheese Sandwich is a a baked roll with ground beef, cabbage, maybe onion, and cheese stuffed inside. The caloric content is horrendous but it's totally worth trying at least once.
