Now that I've gone full in on the Hobonichi planner craze, of course my next life goal is to purchase as many stickers, pens and supplies as I can to make it work for me. So I couldn't wait to visit Penny Post when I was in town on business recently. This little place is tiny-but-mighty, packed full of allll the planner-related things you could possibly need. From washi tape to notebooks, from fancy paperclips to customized post-its, they had everything I could possibly ever want (and more). The staff is really helpful, too. Perhaps noticing the blank stare/look of overwhelm on my face, a kind employee asked if she could help me find anything. Anything? I had found everything! Luckily, I was doing carry-on only this trip, so only left with a handful of pens and a roll (okay, two rolls) of lovely floral-printed washi tape. If you're into planning, journaling, fancy pens, fountain pens, stickers, or just need a creative greeting card, Penny Post is the place. A quick note about parking: it's sort of a nightmare! Simply the cutest stationary store in Alexandria. Upon walking in the smell of paper just wraps around you. The store is filled with stamps, cards, notecards, pens, stickers, and so much more... so much more. The staff were helpful, and efficient. Check out was a breeze. The pricing is very reasonable and can be a little pricy. But, I found the products to match the pricing. I had to contain myself not to buy too much. I did find out they have a sister store or two and you can find them online. I plan to return! read more

I frequent this store at least once a week because I have a borderline unhealthy addiction to stationery supplies... and this place truly gives me my fix. They have all types of pens/pencils (to include fountain pens!), washi tape, stickers on stickers on stickers, gift wrap and bags, unique cards for any occasion, journals, calendars, and so much more! Every time I visit this place, I swear I always find something new. I think they put great care/effort in shop presentation, especially when switching up their displays to drive customer interest and engagement. I really could spend hours in here on any given day. I happily stumbled upon this shop one day. They shop is on the smaller side but has a great collection of writing utensils, cards, and office supplies. You can tell that they put a lot of thought into every item in their inventory. They have a lot of stuff from smaller brands I had never heard of. My favorites have been this mint green to-do pad, kaweco fountain pen, and mindfulness journal. They also have tons of fun and unique greeting cards. This stationery store is owned by the same owners as Red Barn Mercantile (which is located a block away-- definitely recommend to check out this store too). I checked out the store on their opening weekend, it was fully stocked with everything a stationery lover could ever want or dream of. As a Rifle Paper Co fan, this place has all the new products from them. The staff was friendly and ready to help with any customer with questions. It's located on ideal location of Alexandria and there's off street parking. I found out about this cute little shop by looking on the hobonichi planner site to see places that had carried their planners in the past. Taking a peek at their Instagram, I saw they had a lot of different types of pens and even inks that I haven't seen in larger paper shops. This was my first time using this super thin river paper so I needed to test different inks to see what worked best and in what sizes. They were incredibly helpful in letting me test the pens and answering all my questions about fountain pens. I even left with a one-pager of "fountain pen tips." I will definitely be back because they had unique and quirky cards, pins, and a great assortment of washi. I may have been able to some of the items at a lower price at big-box stores, but I love supporting small and local businesses. read more

Solid place for a unique birthday card. While Papyrus is a solid choice for highly engineered stationery for high-leverage events, the problem is that the selection of interesting designs gets limited for particular events; while less of a faux pas as wearing the same dress as another to a wedding, still not fun to bring the same card. Penny Post has a wall of unique, almost indie designs, which solve this problem. While not the best curated, a careful dig through the stacks of cards akin to a hunt for rare baseball cards at a yard sale, can yield dividends in the form of a unique card that can make an interesting statement. Upon learning that Penny Post opened in Old Town, I was ecstatic. Being a papyrophilia, I always yearn for more stationery stores. Although the shop isn't that big, it's a bright, airy, and beautiful space. Everything is decorated the way you imagine a perfect stationery store should look. And there are so many trinkets to see! Penny Post carries greeting cards, notebooks, notepads, paper, pencils, pens, office supplies, desk accessories, wrapping paper, ribbons, washi tape, party supplies, bags, prints, candles, chocolates, and lots more. They also can help you customize cards and invitations. The store also carries a selection of calligraphy items from Meant To Be Calligraphy, an Alexandria-based calligraphy vendor. I've purchased a couple of pens, a tote bag, and cards here since they opened. This is such a fun place to shop, even if you're just window-shopping! I've always received stellar customer service here. They even held a couple of events for National Letter Writing Month in April. One knows from the second of coming close enough to read the words "Hold me closer tiny donuts", that you need to go in...It also is of note, that overheard outside another OldT store was a slight battle over Japanese marking pens....which I have to agree....one can NEVER have too many...(°*°also I did not know the selection here is amazing according to this heated marital exchange) I, myself, am quite fond of the stickers...I find myself giving them to harried, non-smiling waitstaff...to people on the metro...I give them several and suggest that perhaps they might have a use for the "slightly snarky ones" and that the "you rock one " is for them to keep. It never fails to bring a big smile. Lastly, I am a HUGE fan of the latest paper flowers in the window....plus, I was walking home from a great dinner Wednesday night..and they were having a class. Penny Post is a great addition to Old Town Alexandria - a perfect alternative to Papyrus or The Paper Source on the opposite end of King Street from these two stores (it's much closer to the metro). This shop is 2 blocks from my office, and I probably stop in here about twice a month, buying something 50% of the time. I've purchased cards, caramels, coasters, pencils, notepads, calligraphy pens, ink, and paper, and a business card holder. Some of the stuff can get a little pricey (i.e. $10+ for a single mechanical pencil), but it's easy enough to find something nice at any price range - about half of the items I listed previously I purchased on sale, and half I payed full price for. The staff is helpful, and usually only ask if I need help if they've noticed me wandering around the store for a while (because sometimes I make three full loops before deciding what I want). Penny Post also regularly host events at their shop, including a monthly Correspondence Club, which I've been to once. Encouraging the writing of handwritten notes is such a good idea! They also host workshops like paper quilling and bullet journaling. I have yet to attend one of these, but I plan to attend one soon! read more

This store is amazing for stationary or pen lovers. There is a great variety of notebooks, sticky notes, cards, washi tape, enamel pins, and individual pens. The customer service is great- after looking at the individual pens for 5 or so minutes, the clerk invited me to test some, including colors not available as testers. Overall, I love this store and it's a challenge to not buy everything in it. there is one downside- the prices can be a little steep, but that is to be expected at stationary stores and the prices are comparable to paper source or papyrus. read more

I popped into Penny Post this past weekend on a whim, and was so glad that I did. If you're a graphic design and/or stationary enthusiast, then this store will be the bees knees. I felt like I had wandered into a dream. There are elegant cards for all occasions; witty cocktail napkins (e.g. "Congratulations on your new baby...I killed three houseplants this year"); books on typography, design, art & artists, etc.; journals and notebooks aplenty; a curated assortment of Rifle Paper Company goods; some knick knacks; and more writing implements than you could shake a stick, er lettering pen, at. If I needed custom invitations or stationary, I wouldn't think twice about ordering here. I purchased a bullet journal and was given a free letter-writing kit in honor of National Letter Writing Month.
