My waitress was very helpful in navigating the menu, which is surprisingly customizable. ​I ordered an egg white omelet with steak and cheese, and it was hands down the best-tasting egg white dish I've ever had--the seasoning was perfect! The steak was tender and juicy, and the homemade old-country style hashbrowns are a must-try. ​While the prices might seem a little high at first glance, the quality of the food absolutely justifies it. Relaxed atmosphere. Unique food. Open kitchen . Not your typical small town grille. In the past the cube steak sandwich was really good. It came out piping hot, fresh out the fryer, a definite fan favorite. This last visit it seemed the steak came off as warm yet not hot. I get the impression the steak was batch fried to accommodate the busy hours. It lacked that authentic fresh cooked food I come to love at Penn's grille. read more

We went for breakfast on a Sunday morning. I was expecting standard diner fare, but what a surprise! The service was great and the food was delicious. I ordered a side of grits that was amazing! And the biscuits with homemade strawberry sauce was like eating dessert. This is my new favorite breakfast place. read more

This place is fantastic. It's something in between the world's greatest diner and a really excellent small-town family restaurant. I almost don't want to give it a good review, because I enjoy that it's not usually too crowded (though I don't imagine my one review will tip the scales and cause a mad rush of patrons, I suppose). So, if you're anywhere near the town of Whiteville, or if you're traveling to the beaches and the coast (either NC or SC), it is well worth your while to arrange your route so that you stop here for breakfast/brunch/lunch. Even if it takes a little longer, you won't regret skipping the breakfast/lunch chain restaurants (Cracker Barrel, etc) to eat here. I've found that getting off of 95 and routing myself through Whiteville, NC, is surprisingly convenient for many trips. Everything is prepared with great care and precision (sometimes that can take a little extra time -- but I am the world's most impatient person, and in this case, I don't mind -- I promise it is worthwhile). As a small example, the fried eggs are perfectly the way they're requested (how many restaurants actually regularly manage true "over medium"?). The pancakes are by far the best in any restaurant I've been to in NC and SC (and also PA/NY/NJ/MD/DE/WV) -- and they are actual buttermilk pancakes. Anything I've ordered has been great. The prices are reasonable, and everything is cooked/served by a very small band of hard-working, nice (but not overbearing) people. Plus, they have sweet tea with "the good ice" and plenty of homey and excellent baked goods. read more

Worth a try if you happen to be in Whiteville for lunch. An unpretentious diner that tries to punch above it's weight, the specials for Mother's day, when my wife and I were there, showed some thought. We tried the Caprese salad with grilled chicken, and to balance out any overly-healthy aspects of the meal we had an order of the chili cheese fries. The Caprese salad had all the right ingredients; a great mix of greens, wonderful heirloom tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar, beautifully arranged in the bowl. However, there were technical difficulties. The chicken was overcooked, and there was a lack of dressing on the plate. Adding a tablespoon of olive oil and, more importantly, seasoning with salt and pepper, would have been great. Just adding a bit of each improved the dish by 100%. The only service flaw was forgetting the second "course", the fries. These came out quickly when prompted, perhaps a bit too quickly. The fries were under-cooked, the cheese was not melted, and the "chili" was more like crumbled, under-seasoned meatballs that had not been drained after being cooked. So close, but again execution errors. A little doctoring with catsup, salt, and hot sauce and the fries were ok. Why a 4 and not a 3 or lower? First of all, the place was spotless, which inspired confidence. The menu showed some flair, and the lack of seasoning was mostly fixable. Perhaps we made a poor choice of menu items, but we had never been there before. We agreed if we find ourselves in Whiteville again, we would give it another try, so it really can't have been a 3. read more

Did a quick google search and stumbled upon this place. Quaint with great hospitality and delicious food for a great price so tip the staff extra! Coming to Whiteville/Chadborn weekly I really struggled finding a good breakfast spot. Even had one place to actually serve me frozen Kellogg's pancakes right out of the box like you get at the grocery store. Well look no more Penn's grill is the real deal. Everything is fresh to order and the breakfast is wonderful. Doing the "low carb" thing they even have low carb bowls. Absolutely the best breakfast/brunch place around. read more

Very cute restaurant in Whiteville. We were passing through on our way back from the beach and looking for breakfast. This place has an amazing array of baked goods and menu options for every kind of diet. The vegan sausage was better than any I've had in a restaurant before. The hubby and I stopped in for a quick breakfast and wow it was better than I expected! I couldn't believe they had as many healthy options as they do. I had the avocado hash browns bowl and he had the chicken and waffles. I really loved the fresh cut hash browns. I'm a big fan of a homemade breakfast, but honestly who has the time? We decided to try out this place based on yelp reviews. We were sadly disappointed in the food and the service. We waited over 35 minutes to get our drinks, then waited another hour for our food. By the time they plated our food they were out of multiple items. The owner came to our table and told us the reason our food took so long to come out was because the server was new and she couldn't read her handwriting. Multiple orders were brought out incorrectly and the food was bland. When we sent food back and didn't want a replacement we were told that our salad wouldn't be taken off of the bill because the egg was eaten. When we addressed the owner about it, she became defensive. We pass through Whiteville on a regular basis and like to find new places. We will definitely not be returning here. read more
