I took some out of town friends here who wanted to visit some wineries in the Hill Country. I was driving, so I did not purchase the $12.95 tasting which came with a wine glass. My friends enjoyed the experience and we liked the merchandise for sale. I then saw the information on their wine club which was $69.95, but came with 20% off merchandise, free wine tastings for you and 3 of your friends, and 3 bottles of wine (to be shipped at a later date or you may pick up yourself), and invitations to some of their wine events. If there are four of you in your party, it makes sense to become a member. Just make sure you cancel if you don't want to be charged every 3 months for a shipment. My friends purchased 2 bottles of wine and some merchandise. I give this winery 4 stars instead of 5 because I did purchase the wine club membership, but they did not refund the $25.90 for the 2 tastings. When we returned home, we realized that the server gave us the wrong bottle of wine. We think the price was the same, and the wine tasted good. read more

They had decent wine and a pretty good cheese plate along with other non-alcoholic drinks. Their back deck is gorgeous! I'm docking a point because their tasting was kind of a pain. In most places you just roll up to the bar and buy a tasting (or buy little tokens at the front which you use at the bar). Here, we went to the hostess first, who explained their two tastings and then asked us a bunch of questions, at which point she directed us to the bar, where he did essentially the same thing. This was our second visit to Pedernales. The first one we loved the wine but the employees were extremely rude. We decided to give it another shot today and found it to be a complete 180. Our server was new, I believe his name was Forbes, and was polite, friendly, and knowledgeable. As expected the wine was fantastic. After this experience I would recommend to anyone. The only reason for I have for 4 stars instead of 5, is I overheard the other employees being extremely rude to one another which was very off putting. Drinking wine should be fun! read more

This was our first time here at Pedernales Cellars and we really had a good time. The tasting is a little more expensive than the majority of wineries nearby, but only by a couple of dollars. The wines are good and we purchased a bottle to take with us. Also, they do have some nice merchandise, including some handcrafted, leather bound wine journals that my wife loved (so of course we bought one). The tasting room is large and there is an outside deck/patio that has a great view. Definitely a place to come back to. read more

I visited with my mother. The view is gorgeous, and the wines we tasted were pretty good. However, the tasting experience was disappointing. The pourer we had seemed to really not want to talk to us, and didn't really say much, except for trying to sell us a membership. Even questions about the wine itself were shrugged off and vaguely answered. I would love to give a higher rating for the scenery and the wonderful wines we tasted, but the tasting experience wasn't a very good one. Hiring servers that like to talk about wine and also talking to people could be very helpful. Better luck next time. read more

First visit was a "home run!" When my wife and I first visited Fredericksburg last year, we didn't get a chance to stop at Perdernales so we made it out first stop this year. We were both very impressed! We did the Reserve Tasting and Kyle did an outstanding job explaining the wines and such. We enjoyed the wine so much we joined the wine club (and took some bottles home with us!). Let me make a suggestion: If you like their wine....join the wine club. They give a very healthy discount to wine club members on the shipments throughout the year! More than you see at most wine clubs in fact. I wish I could explain how great the view is from their deck. It's the best view I've seen anywhere in this part of the state. My wife and I generally hit Fredericksburg once a year, but we'll be going back more often because of this gem in the hills! read more

Picture this, you pic one winery of a million out of a bunch to chose from. You decide on one, then you arrive...absolutely breath taking views..cute free wine glasses with purchase of course. Then you get a wine tasting 16 dollars per person. Hmmm okay do we get a tour? No but that's okay because it's still pretty! My brother and sister and our significant others hired a bus driver for the day so that drunk driving is non of our concern! My brother whom was completely fine go cut off half way into the wine tour as w are just standing there tasting. Our wine tasting server was rude and terribly condescending, made tons of rude comments. We came here for a birthday and it was disappointing. At least we got free 16 dollar wine glasses! Never returning despite the views we will miss he was just too rude. read more

A large group of us took a trip to Pedernales on a Saturday. After doing some research, we decided to reach out to them the week prior to confirm that they would be able to handle a larger group. On the phone, it seemed as if this would be no problem at all (even without a reservation) as our plan was not to do a tasting, but to purchase some bottles and sit outside. Upon arrival, we learned very quickly that this was not the case. Even though the tasting room was quite busy, we let them know that we had spoken to an employee on the phone and were assured that we could buy bottles and sit outside-the porch was completely empty at this point. Nonetheless, every single employee we encountered refused us service. Each and every person we dealt with was unprofessional an made ZERO attempt to reconcile the issue. VERY POOR SERVICE AND NO PROFESSIONALISM WHATSOEVER. I will not be visiting this place again and based on the way we were treated I will make sure to let as many people know that this place should be skipped without question. read more

I really liked the wines here, but thought some of the wines were a bit overpriced. Not sure how you can charge $49 for anything if you just opened! It was a very good cab but I've had Napa cabs that are as good or better for less. We bought 4 moderately priced bottles including a different cab and a port. Overall, a great addition to the 290 wine road. Look forward to returning. And they did waive the tasting fee with a purchase - this should be everyone's policy. read more

I had a wonderful afternoon at Pedernales a few weeks ago. The staff in the tasting room were knowledgeable and very friendly. The room itself was inviting and I really loved the paintings hung throughout the room. The property is beautiful and very peaceful. After visiting wine tours in Texas and other wine producing states, I thought the amount poured for a TASTING was perfect. The drive from San Antonio was lovely and it was definitely worth it to come home with a bottle of Tempranillo. I will definitely be back! read more

Enjoyed the reds and insight provided by man leading the tasting. I did not feel hurried even though we visited shortly before closing. It was very clear where to go for a tasting as soon as you walked in, so there was no wandering around awkwardly as occurs with some of the other tasting rooms. Locals stopped by today for a bottle. One lady greeted us and was very polite. She guided us to the bar. Unfortunately that was the last customer service we received. I told the man behind the bar that we wanted a bottle to enjoy there. I had to ask for a wine menu. He offered no other suggestions. The list was limited but I made a choice. He was not personable at all never smiled and really turned us off from the whole experience. I was so frustrated I told him never mind and left. Our server was fantastic, the wine was good, but the management was awful. I visited the winery with two of my friends, and in the middle of our lovely tasting, the manager came up behind us and rudely moved us to the other end of the bar. She didn't ask us if we would mind moving down to make room for another party to come in, instead she rudely pointed behind our backs directing us to the other end of the bar. It was very disrespectful, and unprofessional of her. Although we are a younger crowd, we had originally intended to spend a lot of money there because we enjoyed the service our server was providing, however after our less than pleasant experience we left empty handed. This winery knows how to treat its Patrons like five star guests, they meet you out on the drive in waving and then they never stop with the Level of customer service that is unprecedented anywhere we went in the area. Heidi our server was new to the position , however she was very knowledgeable, loved her and her quick wit and humour. The wines were tasty and the views were spectacular. I am a freelance photographer and will say that the views were to die for . Will definitely go back every time we are in town and hopefully see Heidi and the other crew. 5 stars for sure read more

Great wine club event yesterday. I can only afford one wine club and they absolutely make it worth the money between their events and fantastic wine. This was by far the most fun and organized event yet. Perdernales is my favorite winery by far in the region. I used to make sure I hit Becker; but, then I found Pedernales by accident one day. My favorite way to end a trip to Fredricksberg is to stop for a glass of sensational wine sitting on the comfy deck chairs enjoying the gorgeous views. Heaven! The wine tasting was inexpensive ($15 to try 6 wines) and the sommelier was knowledgeable and friendly. The grounds are stunning, particularly after the rain (luscious green) and the view of the hill country is spectacular. We were very disappointed with the service at Pedernales Cellars. The whole family was in town to help my grandmother fix up her house and wanted to get out and do something fun before dinner so we headed out to the winery. After a day of light work, we were not very dressed up, but still dressed casually enough to fit in with the area. Apparently it was not enough for the man behind the counter, who treated us very rudely. I understand if a dress code is implied, but when we're spending $50 per bottle for wine, a level of courtesy is expected. The taste and price of the wine seemed to perfectly illustrate the arrogant and pompous attitude of the rest of the staff. Edit: We just saw the exact same bottle of wine at the store just a few miles down the road for over 30$ less than the price we were charged at the winery. It's hard not to feel duped. read more

The wines and the service do not match the beauty of the facility. The tasting was very rushed, and knowledge was extremely limited. Although wine taste is subjective, I struggled to find one wine in the entire tasting in which I could get though the entire glass without dumping. The prices were crazy expensive. This is a nice winery, but don't pay attention to the hours. They say they close at 6:00 pm on Friday, but at 5:40 pm several staff come outside and stand by you making you fell like you need to leave. At 5:30 pm a worker was picking up the cushions outside. I read on line reviews that say the staff are rude and service is not always good. Well, I certainly experienced the rudeness. Who is managing this place for good customer service? The owners should hire a good manager. Customers have plenty of choice in Fredericksburgh for better customer service. read more

I have been out to Pedernales Cellars several times before a recent trip out with friends. My fiance and I typically recommend this place as our favorite, although we'd heard and read that people have had bad and impersonal experiences. For a friend's birthday, we brought out a group of 9 out for a tasting. As we walked in the door towards the counter, an employee walked in front of us to our counter and audibly said "Wow" and looked everyone up and down- great start. When we asked all for tastings it was clear that she wasn't pleased to be serving us. She was so unpleasant throughout the entire tasting, that that alone had ruined my experience. She never once said anything kind, personal, or friendly. I'm talking no welcome, nothing. She would pour the first wine all the way down the line, then pick up the next bottle and stand at the first person watching them and waiting for them to finish their drink so that she could pour the next wine. She was visibly rolling her eyes at some ladies' conversations and looking at the way the women were dressed (in nice dresses and wedges for a day at the vineyards). The experience was the poorest excuse for customer service and a bad representation of the cellar. What's sad is that we learned that our pourer, Whitney, was also the manager and was kind enough to warn the next winery on our stop of our soon arrival, once we walked out. While I'm sure they deal with their fair share of drunks in their tasting room, they shouldn't assume that everyone is intoxicated. We were simply having a nice day out with friends we never see, and celebrating our friend's 25th birthday. We did have a driver outside, and if she was so worried about us, you'd think she would have asked about our transportation. While laughter and chatter may be seen as intoxication, over half of us were completely sober and disgusted by the experience (one person was sick and not drinking at all). It was just completely inappropriate for someone to pass a judgement on a group of women without even speaking to them. We tried to ask questions about the wine, but she was so short with her answers that about halfway through we all just shut up and drank our tastings to get it over with. When we arrived there was a group of about 30 older folks there on a greyhound bus, so maybe that ruined her mood. Before Pedernales, we had a big lunch and had been at William Chris and that experience was AMAZING! We had Dale, who was wonderful and very informative and interactive. No matter how good or bad your wine is, the customer service really makes the experience. Pedernales, a family-operated business, gets a forever X on my list. Go somewhere where they care about your time and money spent! Sidenote- it's also the most expensive tasting of all the wineries in the Stonewall/Fredericksburg area!! You do get a few more wines than most, but overall it's not worth it! read more

Aside from the fact that they are the most expensive for tastings and the wines are mediocre, their biggest problem is that they are by far the most unfriendly, unwelcoming winery we have ever been too!! They certainly don't the meaning of Texas hospitatility!! Even if the wines were fabulous we would not be returning. They really need to take some lessons in customer service. Do yourself a favor and pass them by. There are many other great wineries in the area that actually want your business. read more

The man who served us was nice to us (a larger group) to our faces, but was questioning our tour guide about our sobriety even though we had multiple people who were more than sober. They rushed through our tasting and told us we can take the wine to go after asking for the bottles we PURCHASED to be opened. He said he would open them, but would have to take them on the bus with us. We all felt like we were kicked out and rushed through our PAID tour. We read great reviews of this place, we were all wine aficionados and had toured wineries in California, France, Australia, Spain. Since this claimed to be "World Class" we thought we knew the protocol. The moment we entered, the greeter scowled and gave us a horrific "unwelcome". This was most aberrant for a winery. She said we weren't in the Wine Club. What Wine Club? She didn't explain, just kept repeating those two words. After a long debate with her, I asked politely if we could come in even if we weren't Wine Club members. We were reluctantly shown a spot at the tasting bar. When we asked to see the menu, the server shouted at us: "You DON'T have a choice." Wow. This is Texas? A cold silence ensued. Since we had all driven there from the city, we gamely tried to continue the wine tasting, although by now everyone was quite frightened by the bad treatment. Although one of the $50 wines was good, we decided to leave without buying anything because of the treatment we received. Despite the good reviews, the wine tasting room was quite emptily decorated and was not luxurious or lush by any standards. The views were ok but you get the same nice country views at other places. I wouldn't say this place is "world class" - it falls very short of California wineries, let alone "world class" wineries. As for the wines, whether red/white, they all tend to be on the sweet side (as opposed to dry). Nothing to write home about, really. read more

The wine here is really good and the reds are fantastic. The problem is there a little pricey. You can get basically the same wine at area retailers for about a third of the price. The view is phenomenal from the back deck which is where you'll be sitting if your not a wine club member and sometimes it gets pretty hot. Members have there own room and you can save 20% off the wines and get free tastings. The staff is friendly. I would highly recommend this place. read more

To begin with, they make you stand in line at the front door and try to talk you into a $26 tasting and won't give you a choice of your wines. When that didn't work they sell you 2 glasses of wine and charge you $25 for average to below average wine in a place that doesn't even clean their flowerbeds or remove the ballots from the oak trees.
