I was quoted a $5,718.71 bill, yet they refused to provide a detailed breakdown of parts and labor costs (see attached email screenshot). "This dealership does not provide parts list with pricing because they do not want customers to take the list to another mechanic. My understanding is that's a common occurrence in the area and the dealer is able to set that as their policy." I've never encountered a mechanic or dealership--whether it's a small local shop or a reputable brand like BMW or Volvo--that refuses to share this basic information. It raises serious concerns about potential overcharging. Why else would they withhold the breakdown? It's shocking that customers are expected to pay thousands of dollars without knowing exactly what they're being charged for. I booked an appointment 3 weeks in advance just to come to the dealership to be told they wouldn't be able to service my car because they didn't have the proper parts for a recall. I didn't care about that but they couldn't do a basic oil change & tire rotation either. The customer service is really bad because when I booked the appointment you knew you didn't have the parts so why make me come to the dealership instead of calling me to make other arrangements. Sale experience was fine. However, i purchased a new cx 50. i took it in the first of November 2025 because the back window behind driver side would not go down. They took out a sensor, then the door cannot even be opened. I was told they would call me when part came in. After two weeks, i called, they said they were delivery chain problems. Well, after calling the helpline at Mazda, they gave me a case number and said part would be here by end of January. Just got a email, that says "as i told you, the part will be here in late March 2026". That was a lie, they said part would arrive in January, I'm deciding my next steps, 5 months with brand new car with a broken door is not acceptable. DO NOT EVER BUY A MAZDA! read more

The customer service overall could improve. Like most dealerships they are quick to give you an estimate on how much the service can cost but not many options otherwise. It feels more like a number type of customer service versus helping the customer. Service loaners also seem hard to come by which is always interesting given then many cars available for sale on the lot. Responsiveness is also a big thing in my opinion especially when your vehicle is in the hands of someone else. Updates are appreciated and not really given without having to call a few times before getting through to someone. As a Mazda customer of 10+ years I was pretty disappointed overall. I've been a customer with Pearson Mazda for 5 years (have the extended warranty so I can't leave them, sadly). This is the most unprofessional company I've ever worked with, and I will never buy another car from them again. They've repeatedly gaslit me, upcharged me, and been sexist this entire time. My air conditioner broke and Mazda claimed that it was fine. It was so hot on the 4th time I picked up my car for this same issue that my phone died from the heat. My heated seats didn't work after an hour. Turns out there was a recall and they lied to me over and over again. Over time my USB port in the center console has slowly given up. I didn't want to go to Mazda because of their repeated bad behavior, but have the extended warranty. To try and fix the problem myself, I bought 4 new phone cables and a brand new iPhone. Nothing worked and my phone keeps losing connection to the car with every bump in the road. Mazda did nothing about it. Apparently I am supposed to use an Apple-made cable (Pearson Mazda didn't respond when I pointed out that Apple doesn't make USB-A to USB-C) and that it was a "problem with the phone" and that "females put their phones in their handbags and that messes with the USB port". No, it doesn't. This is a brand new phone and I have no problems connecting it with anything besides my car. I cannot recommend this place if you're a woman. Run. Run far away from them. read more

My air conditioner and heat broke within one month (before my first car payment), and their warranties are not great. The lady who did my finance was new and didn't know what she was doing. Was referred here by Carmax since my trunk didn't work on my Mazda CX-9. They fixed it within a day and when I went to pick it up, I found the trunk worked great, but my battery died! My friend doesn't have a yelp so I am sharing this for him: While I am a huge Mazda fan, this dealerships service department was a terrible experience. Left the piece they installed on my car wrong and when I asked them to fix it, before they even saw any pictures immediately denied any wrong doing. Ignored my phone calls, and refused to fix it or give me a refund for labor. Whitten Mazda will be go to from now on. They continued to claim my car was messed up, can you explain to me why the car looks fine in the previous picture, but not after they installed the new piece? All I asked was for it to be fixed, and you couldn't even do that. Now I have to deal with a jacked up body panel. Update: just found out that Pearson Mazda doesn't do body work, they would have to outsource it to a 3rd party. So they had no business touching my car in the first place, since a body shop tech didn't touch my car. My car is currently at Whitten Mazda being fixed. Update 2: Whitten Mazda took these 3 photos (black pieces) of my car showing what was wrong with it. Pearson Mazda forced the clips in and broke them. Resulting in my car looking the way it did. Pearson Mazda has still refused to reach out to me to help me resolve the issue or give me a refund. I would recommend Whitten Mazda 100%, but Pearson Mazda handle the situation extremely poorly, were rude to me, ignored me, and were just an all-around bad dealership to work with. I would love for Pearson to contact me and explain why they told me my car was the way it was when they got it, when in fact they were the ones who broke it. I'll even throw in a picture of what my car looked like before. I did not write this review to be spiteful, or hateful. I'm simply letting you know and letting other people know that you did not handle the situation correctly. You were telling me things that were not true, and were gaslighting me. Making me think my car was in an accident and has body work done. (neither of which are true I checked carfax before I bought the car) I really wish you could've handled the situation differently because I would not be sitting here wasting my time writing this review and paying another dealership to fix your mistake. I beg you all to do your internet research before purchasing a new or used car here. Carefully review the exact model via internet before buying. Also, look at service center reviews to educate yourself on what you are getting into here. Prior to purchase in 2019 new CX9 for $40k (++) I only checked Consumer Reports, etc. I never thought to Google any trending issues with the 2019 CX9. If I had, I would not have bought Mazda or shopped at Pearson. Google and see for yourself. Pearson sent me an invoice for new engine @ $10,300 due to coolant leak this week. Car is worthless without a new engine - just made the final car payment this month. It's officially all mine now and couldn't sell it in good conscience even if I wanted to - although they had no problem selling it to me. One star is VERY generous. I purchased my vehicle in February and have loved it. Everything has been great -- until today. When my car came on the lot, they did not have a chance to detail it (either because it was so old on the lot or they had not gotten to it yet.. not very sure). I was told to come back at ANY time for a detail but to ensure I called and made an appointment. I was told by a woman on the phone the detailing would take UP to 5 hours. I told her that it was fine with me and I would be fine to wait. What the dealership failed to mention was that despite choosing the earliest drop off time (0730am), details don't come in until 9am anyways (that would have been great to know). I have sat well past the five hour mark and am now coming up on 7 hours just waiting with no updates. Not once was I told any timeframe and when I finally asked what was taking so long to detail a car that was hardly dirty to begin with, they said that it wouldn't be ready until 5pm, AND that they also only had me down as a "drop off" so had no idea I was here! Fancy that. Where the miscommunication was I'm not sure, but had I known I would be here all day waiting I would have made other arrangements. 28 minutes ago NEW I purchased a 2012 Mazda3 iTouring with 56,000 miles at the end of June, it seemed it be in great shape. Less than 48 hrs after driving it less than 80 miles the transmission blew! I was devastated, as I have had bad luck with used vehicles when I have purchased from un-reputable dealers in the past. Hence, why we came to Mazda as my parents had purchased one, new, from them in 2010, and that car they bought ended up saving my life. I had it towed to Mazda, and knowing they would look into it. I have to thank them as I know they lost on this deal, and replaced the whole transmission. A couple days after getting my car back, the traction light came on (I panicked as it came on when the transmission blew the first time), and my boyfriend called up to Mazda, as I was I incredibly worried. He spoke with Mike the GM, and despite this loss they were already getting from this deal, took another look at the car and found a bad steering wheel sensor, which they replaced with no cost to me. I have read other reviews on here who have bought used cars, and had bad experiences with Pearson, however I believe that if you are respectful, they will do their best to help you. And again, I'd like to personally thank the entire Pearson Mazda team, and Mike. I love my car, and I have had no issues since they fixed things, and I know it was a loss to them. I hope this review gives back some of what they lost on the deal. Thank you Pearson Mazda! Update: Unfortunately I have to update my review, and I am sad to do so as I am still grateful for what they did do. My car had a blown head gasket and I have a $3600 bill. I was relayed to by my auto shop, having driven the car just under 1000 miles since finally getting my car back, there was no way I did that to this car and I bought it like this. Pearson Mazda should have truly vetted the car better, should have been sold at auction. Now this car has not only cost me $3600, Pearson Mazda did replace the transmission and steering wheel sensor. The dealership lost on this deal, and I lost on this deal, everyone lost. In response to Manager's google reply: We took it to our automotive shop because we lost trust that you guys actually fixed the car. I should not have had to go to the shop period after taking my car back to Pearson Mazda twice to fix problems within a matter of a month. Why wasn't it vetted when on the lot? What wasn't it vetted after first problem? Or the second? We know from our shop, that you guys put a band aid on everything and hope it stuck. You could then claim you are not responsible because of the time period the cars been off the lot since time of purchase. That's not reputable, as my boyfriend pointed out. And we had every right to be upset. Update part II: 6 months later the transmission that was replaced broke down. During those 6 months since the "new & replaced" transmission, it was in the shop getting the head gasket fixed for about a month. I bought the car at 56,000 miles. Guess what the mileage was when it broke down? 58,956 miles. I go to class online, and I go nowhere. I drive nowhere. Just about 3,000 miles later, it broke down. Thank you guys for nothing. I have had to spend almost 10 grand to fix a car you guys didn't vet. After the first problem, I updated this review and was still fair. Now I'm just pissed. I have now a car that is worthless, and you guys have done nothing but act like you aren't responsible. When in fact you are. We came to you guys, a reputable dealership, to avoid possible problems. Nothing at all in how this was handled was reputable. I am super glad I know people in the car dealership industry of Richmond, as well as the automotive repair industry. They have been made aware to how this was handled. They will never refer to you again. How absolutely atrocious the way you guys can claim "new transmission" just because it's new to the car. I brought my Miata in because the A/C stopped working in August. I was charged for an A/C service of course. A leaking line was found so it couldn't be finished. Had to wait on a part and then when I returned to have it installed, which was all prepaid, I was again charged for another A/C service. About 800 dollars in total for a leaking line. They are predators. Will not return even though we bought a brand new CX5 carbon edition there. The sales department was far better than the service department! read more

I bought a car here recently and it was my first time buying one alone. I'll be honest it was much easier of a process than I expected. I went in knowing I most likely wanted the CX-5 because I had previously test driven it but I also wanted to test drive the CX-30 because it was a little smaller but still technically a compact crossover SUV. I text drove the 30 and did not like it at all so I asked to test drive a CX-5. By the time I was in the car trying to adjust the salesman was helping someone else. I never realized that the car had a heads up display. It was totally fine that he was helping someone else but I felt like and this is overall the style of selling was very "we'll let the car speak for itself "... very laid back. I would've liked a little more passion and education about all of the features. I should also mention that because of COVID they aren't allowed to ride with you so that's probably why he was helping someone else. After I test drove that car I also asked to drive another year and I was putt off by the salesman's response that made me feel like he was bothered by that. The finance man was older made me feel pressured to add insurance. I get that they're all like this in the industry but it was something else that negatively impacted my car buying experience. Dakota was great though and so was the man whose name I don't know who put the license plate on. Overall I would recommend Pearson if you're looking for a MAZDA. I love love love my car! read more

I purchased a used vehicle and my car hesitated when driving. I took my car to the dealer and they had me there for 2 hours only to tell me to take it to a GMC service center where I had to pay for a diagnostic fee and service that I later was told was not covered under the "Pearson Promise". I had the car for 6 weeks and ended up paying almost 500. No one was willing to compromise or even reimburse me for anything not even the diagnostic fee. I was given any and every reason to not assist and it took me calling and emailing several times to even speak to someone. They said they checked the car prior to selling but how could you check it thoroughly if you don't have the machines or hardware to service? I will never purchase a car from there again. read more

I brought my 2018 Mazda 6 in after it began overheating. The car was covered bumper to bumper by a third party warranty. The dealership told me the issue was a cracked cylinder head, so they gave me a loaner and told me they would update me when they began the repair. For 2 MONTHS, I called the dealership every other day for updates on my car, and they always gave me a generic response that they were "waiting on the warranty company". During these calls, I also made sure that I was still good to drive their loaner car, and the service rep I spoke with gave me no indications otherwise. Then one day I get a threatening call from the service manager, Judd, who tells me that I can't just take his car for "joyrides" and that this isn't the way things work. He then goes to tell me that the car was taken out of the loaner program and I was driving it uninsured. When i told him that his service rep assured me that I was still ok to drive the car, he told me that "I didn't want to play this game" with him. I brought the loaner back to the dealership the next day. During my visit, Judd informed me that as a result of my cracked cylinder head, my entire engine needed to be replaced, and the reason they hadn't done anything with my car in 2 months was because he didn't think the warranty company would cover the cost of the repair. He claimed that in his experience with my warranty company, it would be a waste of my money and time. Due to the dealership's and Judd's incompetence, I spent the next hour in the dealership calling the warranty company myself where I explained the situation. The warranty company was more than willing to help and explained that they were waiting on the dealership to tear down my engine so they can begin covering the repair. The dealership informed me that if the warranty company didn't cover the cost of the repair, I would need to pay $3500 out of pocket for the tear down of my engine. The day they began the repair, I called them for an update, where they offered me an $800 trade-in for my car because of the "work it needs". With a looming $3500 charge and a bad engine, they conveniently waited until I was most vulnerable to low ball me. In the end, the warranty company paid out $5200 for the cylinder head repair, but of course the dealership found $1600 worth of "repairs" that weren't covered by the warranty that I had to pay out of pocket for. Among this charge was $250 to install a new battery, despite having a perfectly good battery 3 1/2 months ago. I can honestly say this was one of the worst experiences of my life. These guys are incompetent scumbags who will attempt to drain you for all you're worth. If you value your time and money, stay away from these guys. read more

One of the worst places to get your car fixed in Richmond. After reading, you decide if you want them to touch your car. I scheduled an appointment with Pearson to have them do an inspection and repair my driver side window. The driver side window would go down but had trouble going back up. All the other windows were functional. I dropped my car off Sunday night for a Monday appointment and then the fun began. I didn't hear anything from the dealership, so around 3:30 I gave them a call. The response I got was "oh they just took it back, I'll give you a call when I have an update." An hour or so later I get a call back, "sir I'm hoping you don't want to get your car back today because it's going to need some repairs" (yes, I know hence why I scheduled and told you all about what I needed to get done). They list off the stuff that needs to get done, nothing too major, and I had to call to their attention that they had not noticed that I needed a new wiper blade as there was none. I picked up my car after hours and as I drive it off the lot I notice the passenger back window is open (it had been left open for 2 nights by the dealership). I try to roll up the window from the driver side controls and it doesn't work. It appears as though when they fixed the driver window, they managed to break both passenger side windows. The front passenger window no longer automatically goes up or down, and the rear passenger side window doesn't work at all. I take the car back and leave it again for early bird pickup. I call the dealership and had to beg them to allow me to leave a message for the service department (speaks to their poor customer service). The next day, I call the service department and was told that the window switch is faulty and that I would need to pay an additional $400 to get it fixed. They said there is no way they broke the window switch, that the switch is self contained, and it just happened to die of old age. It seems pretty simple to me, I dropped it off working, I picked it up broken. The fact that the rear window was open makes me believe that someone must have rolled it down while fixing it. Pearson Mazda refused to take any ownership or apologize. The manager I spoke with even made excuses for not being able to get my car back to me the same day (people were sick) without taking responsibility for not communicating effectively. After arguing with the tech and the manager, I gave up and decided if they are going to force me to pay to fix their mistake (including the labor costs!) I would rather give my business to a competent and honest service department with good customer service and that is not Pearson Mazda. read more

I would highly recommend the Pearson Mazda Experience to anyone looking for a car, especially Phil, who was understanding with my needs and specifications. During my car buying experience, I visited almost 10 dealerships in the Richmond area. Some salesman were pushy, some wanted quick decisions, one actually made me almost cry. My husband gets the employee discount at GM, but I will never shop there again secondary to the rude and pushy sales staff. On Wednesday in December 11th, I purchased a 2017 Mazda 6 Touring from Pearson Mazda on West broad in Richmond. I worked with Joe Jackson who worked diligently on the price I was able to pay for a vehicle. Coincidentally, I worked with Mr. Jackson in 2012 when he worked at Sheehy Nissan on West broad. Both experiences were great and I definitely recommend him if you are interested in purchasing a Mazda. (So even though this review has 2 stars - Joe gets 5 stars!) However, there is a downside to my experience with Pearson Mazda. On Saturday 12/14, my husband and I drove from Williamsburg to Richmond to drop off my newly purchased vehicle at Pearson Madza for remote start installation and was given a 2018 Mazda Grand Touring VIN - JM1GL1TY6J1324918, as a loaner. On Sunday 12/15 night, I had issues with the safety brake system (SBS) which caused the car to abruptly stop and sputter in the middle of the road(very scary during Christmas traffic)! I was advised to clean the emblem in front of the car just in case there was dirt on the sensor -after that the car was fine. On Monday 12/15, the loaner started to stall once again on a main road after driving for 30 minutes. The dash had several malfunction messages along with a check engine light. Once I explained the car was inoperable, the dealership towed the car from Newport News back to Richmond. I was then informed my car will be ready for pickup on Tuesday 12/16, so my husband and I did not drive all the way to Richmond to pick up a new loaner. I made arrangements for work on Tuesday but when I called later that evening, I was told my car will not be ready until Wednesday 12/17 morning. I told them this was not going to work as I need to go to work Wednesday morning. I called Pearson Mazda and spoke to a manager, Freddy. Freddy made my car available for pickup Tuesday night. I appreciated the efforts, however I explained my frustration and safety concern to Freddy about the car stopping and sputtering in the middle of the road twice. Since I was given a bad loaner and was out of a car for a day, I decided to ask if anything could be done about the inconvenience ( 2 free oil changes or something...anything!). His response was, "I don't have the authorization to offer you anything. Also, we are dealing with machines here. We wouldn't purposely put a customer in a faulty vehicle..But, you never know, things happen." There was a moment of silence -so I just said, ok , thank you. This is all true... however a customer who JUST bought a car from a company does not want to hear something that basically sounds like,"Sucks that happened to you, but hey, sh*t happens! The mechanic who took a look at my car told me it would be a "quick fix" that took "no more than ten minutes." The service coordinator I worked with quoted me unreasonably high for the quick fix. Very poor communication. I made an 8:00am appointment and was told it would take about an hour. I was NOT INFORMED that people who waited for their car got pushed in front of people who make appointments & didn't wait. The service representative said that they would call or text me when it was ready. At 1:00pm I hadn't received an update, didn't get my car back until 5:00pm from an 8:00am appointment for a Key to be programmed. After expressing frustration with the service manager and told him that it "was not right to put walk-ins in front of people who make appointments". Manager said well if you have a better way for me to run my business than let me know. After our back and forth, he asked the service rep who checked me in if he had informed me that waiters got priority he said no he didn't. Whole issue could have been avoided! Manager wrote a report saying that I was irate and yelling at the staff , which I disagree, and camera footage would show otherwise. Some of this was probably my fault but I would not go back there . I went there twice to test drive a new car as a serious buyer . I didn't t have an appointment . I grew up in the days when you could just walk into a dealership and they would fall all over you . I had talked to someone named Andy the first time and told him I would be coming in to drive a certain car that day. The first time they were busy but there was a really nice lady at a desk . Andy was busy and didn't seem to remember me when he did come to the desk . Another guy finally came to help me . He wasn't overly friendly but set up the test drive . I asked him if he would be going with me . He said no I have customers !When I returned he said to let him know if he could do anything . So a week later I went in again. No one was there to greet me . No one in the entire place . Finally a man came down the stairs and asked if he could help . He was nice enough . I went on another test drive . I came back and he was outside doing something with license plates or something . They seemed to be getting ready to close . No one in there said a word to me . I finally went out and told the guy I was back . He didn't have a lot of interest . I gave him the keys . He earlier had copied my license and put the paper on the table where we were sitting . I noticed it was still sitting on the table right where you walk in the front door when I came back from the test drive . It obviously would have just stayed there for anyone to see . I have purchased 2 cars from them. I also purchased the third party warranty. I had an issue with my CX5 not starting one day. I had it towed there. That is when the problems began. Judy, who I believe is the service manager insisted I did not have a wrap coverage extended warranty. She basically called me a liar and treated me extremely disrespectful. Instead of her taking the time and energy for her to walk the 10ft across to the sales department to pull my sales paper work, she VERY rudely told me to pay the $300.00 bill and if I can provide proof of warranty, I would be reimbursed. I live 45min away from Pearson Mazda. The next day I drove 45min back and gave her not only my warranty card, but an underlined page in the booklet where it was covered!! Needless to say, she acted very surprised to see me again. I did not even get an apology from her for treating me like a liar!! I have a zero deductible if I get covered repairs done there. I happily pay the $50.00 and go elsewhere. read more

I had a leak in my tire in my Mazda3. I brought it here and let them know. They called and said they found no leaks. It then dawned on me, I told them the wrong tire. That's 100% my fault. I was put on hold. They accidentally took me off hold without knowing, I could hear the man on the line say "I'm not saying that I'm not saying that!" when a woman grabbed the phone and said all my tires had been checked and were fine. I was 99% sure I was being lied too but went and picked up my car. A few days later, the light goes on again, so I bring my car in. This time I made sure to mention the correct tire that I thought had the issue. Sure enough 10 mins later they called me saying there actually is a leak in my entire. Well, no kidding. That pretty much confirmed I was lied to in my initial visit. read more

I just moved here to Richmond and I bought a Mazda Speed3. I brought it to the dealership to get work done. Everyone was super helpful and the price was reasonable. I had a rattle in my subwoofer that was driving me insane. I took it a local car audio store who recommended I replace the sub and have them (local car audio store) do the work. This store disagreed with my initial assumption of debris being in the Sub. I left very frustrated and called Pearson Mazda who examined the unit and removed all the debris. I couldn't be more pleased with the service I received from Nathan and everyone else at Pearson Mazda. read more

Customer Service is abhorrent. When a customer has a problem the number one rule of customer service is to listen to them. I called the repair department after my sister spoke with someone to no avail. I was interrupted and told "no" immediately. I was then told I "had an attitude". I did not raise my voice or curse and was not given a chance to explain my situation. I called the sales department and told them they need to get me an appointment this week as there is an issue with the car I purchased. This has been an issue for a month and the repair department never called for an appointment. Magically repair can fit me in this week now. I certainly hope customer service skills improve before then. Listen to your customers! Just letting someone explain their situation to you goes a very long way to show you care and calm them down. As it stands now I am EXTREMELY displeased with your customer service. read more

My wife and I have bought two new Mazdas from here. Both experiences have been flawless. The last one we bought, was 90% taken care of via email and text. We showed up, signed a few papers and drove away happy. I recommend Pearson dealerships to anyone looking for an easy purchase of a new or used car. Service department is also great. Fast and efficient and they don't try to push unnecessary repairs on you. Also recently had ok interactions with the parts department. Jeff was awesome, getting me the bulbs I needed overnight. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE FOR SERVICE!!!!! I took my 2004 Mazda RX8 to this PEARSON MAZDA SERVICE DEPARTMENT off of BROAD STREET just to have the a compression check done...... weeks pass by I don't hear not one word. So finally I call them to asked about the status of my car the service Advisor who would NEVER tell me her name said oh Mr.Banks we didn't hear from you so we did ALL THE RECALLS ON your Mazda. One was a fuel pump which I just had replaced a few months ago for OVER 400.00!! And they said you are going to need a new engine which will cost over 7,000.00! I told the service writer that I need to think a about it. A few days later I get I call from Judy LINDGREN AT 7:45 IN THE MORNING saying you need to come pick up your car because the storage fees are up TO 400.00!!! So I go up to the dealership ask them who give you authorization to do all this repair work. She stood there with a blank face I then told her I need the fuel pump back so I can get the money back from the repair place that replaced it, oh sorry she says we don't have the fuel pump anymore it's gone! So I said let me speak to the manger he comes out once again never even introduced him self and doesn't do one thing!!!!STAY AWAY FROM THIS DEALERSHIP!!!!!! read more
