Seahorse - Cod, chips and mushy peas

Visiting London and a wanted to get some decent fish and chips. Our friend suggested this tiny…read morechippy in outer Earlsfield. It was that, or a posh place in Battersea which does upmarket fish and chips for twice the price. Hmm, which to go for? We opted for Earlsfield as we wanted the more traditional chip shop. Sea Horse is small and looks like a thousand other chip shops, but they really know what they are doing. The chips are peeled and cut on site and are fantastic. Big and crispy brown, but with a moist and juicy inside. This is down to the frying and the potato they use, but mostly that it's all done fresh and on site. As far as chip shop chips, this is as good as it gets. That is, unless you really need the soggy, soft chip you so often get. That has it's place, but this is a far superior chip, in my view. So the fish. There was none sitting in the warming window as they fry it fresh to order. Takes time, but worth it. We all had cod, but they do Skate and Haddock as well. The batter was crisp, light and nicely browned. Not too greasy as well. The fish inside was perfectly cooked and a lovely flakey quality. So often you get cod overdone and it feels more like mush. This was done perfectly. They serve it in a box, much like a small pizza box, and this helps keep it crispier than wrapping it in paper. Nice thought and it works. Also a lot easier to eat from if you are on the go. Like I said at the start, this place looks like a thousand other chip shops, but they do their cooking with care and passion. At the price, it's a great deal for this kind of quality. I was chatting with the owner while I waited, a lovely Turkish man. His wife and sons work there. Really nice family. I'm typing this on my flight back to Vancouver. I know where I'm going for fish and chips on my next London visit.

Portions are generous, fresh fish and charming service, my favorite place for a quick bite. Take…read moreadvantage of the lunch time special. Update Unfortunately this place seems to have changed hands. It is a shadow of its former self.

They know that when you order takeaway fish and chips you must be stomach-clenchingly famished and very tired. Marina Fish Restaurant is a smartly decorated, modern looking fish and chip restaurant. Before I called by, I had actually thought it was a fish restaurant in the broader sense, due to the name and the look of the place. Actually I think they are missing a trick in not offering a wider choice of fishy treats, as I'm sure there would be demand in the area, and it's good-looking enough for people to come for the evening and spend a little more on dinner. The takeaway is tasty, but a bit expensive. The classy cardboard boxes printed with the restaurant's name look good (a childish bit of me thinks 'ooh, fancy!' each time, and feels like I have gone up in the world, to be purchasing boxed London fish and chips as if it is a fancy fish and chips boutique) but by the time I get home the steam build-up has always made everything go a bit limp. I'd be happy to pay a quid less per portion and forgo the box and the lemon wedge.

I ordered Rock Salmon and chips to eat in. It was £9.70 but no extras and was perfect. Done fresh in 7 minutes, good flavour, texture. Chips were varied, one or two with some skin on, large and small. Again, good flavour. Service polite and unobtrusive. Pay at the till afterwards. Recommended.

Visited The Queens Arms while in the area. Best pub experience! I think you have to get there early…read moreif you are coming for dinner or you have to reserve your table. I'm not sure on that, it's just something I thought we caught on to before we left and there started to be RESERVED tents going on the tables. We went and had Scotch Egg, Calamari, Arancini, fish & chips and STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING. Oh. My. Goodness! First the Scotch Egg. I don't want to be a Debbie Downer but it was....ok. It was a little plain. A little tasteless. They could have thrown a few spices into the meat, just a little something. To say that we've made better at home wouldn't be far out. But still good. The calamari was cooked just right. It's what you expect out of a calamari appetizer. Was it the best you'll ever have? Not really. Worth the price? Add it to your appetizer list! The rice balls, which is arancini is, were good. Add a little salt to the top and they were, also, as you'd expect. The fish & chips were exactly as we were hoping when visiting an English Pub for fish & chips. The fish was perfectly cooked, the coating was fabulous, and of course the chips were a perfect compliment to the fish. A great fish & chips experience. The star of the show was the Sticky Toffee Pudding. What a treat! Granted I've nothing to compare it to, this was my first time having it, but whether I've had it before or not THIS was perfection. Perfect texture, the flavour was amazing, the caramel drizzle was perfectly proportioned, and the little bit of ice cream on the side was just perfect. I would go back here simply on this dessert alone. As for the drinks, because, you know, it's a pub....I couldn't say. I don't drink alcohol but my Diet Coke was great! Fresh bottle! ....I suppose I could have gotten a non-alcoholic beer. Wait....did they have non-alcoholic beer there? SOMEONE FIND OUT IF THEY HAVE NON-ALCOHOLIC BEER THERE. The atmosphere was great. I can see how it would be perfect in the evening and on into the night. Very welcoming with a great looking bar.

Food is always superb. Its best to make reservations because it is a busy place every time we have…read morebeen.
