Well...this was unique in some good ways and more not as good ways. I believe Peak Bros is one of those places where the locals will tell you it's the best ever and for someone like me who has eaten at 500 or so BBQ restaurants in the last 10 years, will disagree with that. Let's start with the good - my sweet tea was refreshingly sweet. It was the best part of the meal. The potato salad was good. It was a mustard-mayo mix base and homestyle. I usually want to try it all at a BBQ joint I've never been to. They do have a combo plate that fits that need. It comes with a rib, brisket, sliced pork, sliced mutton, chipped mutton, and ham. It only comes with one side and bread. I'm not a ham person and usually avoid it, but there was something special about this ham. It was juicy and it had a great taste to it. They are known for their ham but if the ham is the standout on a BBQ plate, well you might have a problem. The chipped mutton was also really good. If you have never had mutton before, you can only find it in this part of Kentucky. The chipped mutton soaked up the vinegar style BBQ sauce. It was also worth eating on the plate if you like BBQ lamb. Surprisingly, the brisket was actually pretty good too except it was just a mismatch with the very thin, vinegar sauce. Now for the bad news - the rib and sliced pork was just awful. I couldn't stand to eat the pretty tasteless pork and the rib was almost inedible. The sliced mutton was just as bad as the rib. It was tough and inedible. I didn't hate the sauce. It was a very thin, vinegar style and the bread went well with it because it soaked it up. The sauce went well with the chipped mutton and if they had done pulled pork, it probably would have went well with that too. It was just a mismatch for every other meat and with just one sauce to choose from, it wasn't a good thing. I wanted to know what else was on the menu that people liked and I got three different answers, which tells me...to each his own. I weighed between a two and three on this one but I thought the bad just outweighed the good. Peak Bros. is one of those places where it's great if you are local but for someone like me with 300 something Yelp reviews on BBQ joints, it was pretty bad BBQ. Peaks is always good. It is a definite anytime I'm in Kentucky. I've been going to peaks for 50 years. Their sliced ham is unmatched.

The waitress was great but the food wasn't as flavorful as it once was! I have the chilled mutton sandwich and just was rather bland tasting this time. I've lived Peak Bros barbecue for over 40 years but just noticed the flavor was lacking hopefully this isn't a trend. read more

Ummm, Peak Bros is not in Wheatcroft, KY. It's in Waverly, KY. Both towns are pretty much blink-and-they're-gone kind of places but Waverly is actually a little less off the beaten path. A little. Peak's was recently rebuilt after a fire but from what I understand, it's back as strong as ever, serving cold beer and BBQ to the locals and the occasional passersby. Have gotten Christmas hams here for several years. They come whole or sliced. We have never been disappointed. Outstanding flavor. They include the bone when you get it sliced. Besides being in a party of nine and waiting 50 minutes after ordering to get served, the combination platter (ham, pork, beef, mutton and a rib that I had is something I will never order again. The ham was good as was the mutton, but the rest was dry and tough with no taste. The rib as in only 1 rib was tender on one side and tough on the other. This BBQ doesn't look like or taste of being smoked at all. I did see a generous sized ham plate that looked very good that maybe I'll order, that is I ever go back. Oh and I've never ever heard of a place selling ribs by the pound. It's usually a rack or a half rack and they couldn't even tell me approximately how many ribs would be in a pound. read more

Peak Bros is the only place my dad would buy his hams, and he passed the tradition to us. We live too far away to get them as often as we would like but their recipe for cooking the ham is the best! We buy the whole ham, have it sliced, and request the bone for soup, beans, etc. Love this little gem of a restaurant! read more

I love this place. I had never even heard of chipped mutton until I came here for the first time almost 10 years ago. Now we stop here during every trip to see the in-laws. They have built a much better restaurant since fire ravaged the place a few years ago. I gave it only 3 stars because it is terribly inconsistent. The service and menu are lacking. Biggest complaint: There are absolutely no vegetables on the menu unless they are deep fried. The chipped mutton is worth a visit and they have a super yummy bean soup too. This is a family favorite and has been for as long as I can remember. We make it part of our itinerary for whenever we go up north. Been one of my favorite places dice I was a little girl , and that was a long time ago! But have been really disappointed the last few times. Ribs are our favorite and lately they are more like they were just baked in the oven (with no seasoning) and soAked in BBQ sauce. We have no idea why anyone thinks that they have good bar-b-que here! Husband and I had combination plate with 5 different meats. If you like the taste of vinegar, you will love it because that is all you can taste. Their bar-b-que "sauce" is nothing but a watery, vinegar-tasting liquid. Most of the meat was tender but not all. Service was not good. When we complained, the owner refused to do anything or to compensate us in any way! We will NEVER be back again!! read more

Peak Bothers Bar-B-Que is another annual stop for us and its Bar-B-Que that's as good as it gets. They use a vinegar based dip and we love it. I usually have the chipped mutton for sure and I have tried about everything on the menu including beef, pork, and chicken and of course the lamb and it's all very good. We take a smoked ham home with us and carry on our Bar-B-Que sensation for a few more days after we get back home. We even make a terrific bean soup with the trimmings and the ham bone. They had a fire a few years back and boy were we disappointed for a couple of years while they rebuilt the place. It used to be quite a dive, but the new construction makes it a very trendy looking place. And they kept the tradition of great food. I know all our relatives go back at least once a year to enjoy the food. If you're in the area it's a must do place to eat. I give it a solid 5 stars. read more
