I just recently moved to Henderson and I have been making my rounds of the food scene. BBQ is my favorite so it didn't take me long to make a trip to Thomason's. Thomason's is an ole fashion hole in the wall BBQ joint. It is small though I have seen smaller. I think there are like 4 booths and another table. It looks like one lady is the cashier, waitress, and busser. I ordered the sampler which comes with a rib, pulled pork, pulled mutton, and one side. I had seen a lot of glowing reviews about the beans so that is what I chose. The rib and beans were the best part of the meal. The rib was humongous and had a delicious flavor as it was smothered in the sauce. The beans were as good as advertised. They were chunky and sweet. The mutton and pork was ok and a little on the dry side. I'm not sure how I felt about the sauce with the mutton and pork. The sauce was a vinegar base influenced by east North Carolina but I think a key ingredient in it was chili powder that gave it an unique taste. There was a hotter version that I asked for. It wasn't much hotter but seemed to have cayenne pepper added to it. Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet! Overall, Thomason's was a good BBQ experience but if you are looking for a sweet type of BBQ, you won't find it here.

This little restaurant was a great find off the beaten path. The baked beans were delicious. The BBQ was perfect. The sauce had a unique spice Coleslaw on the BBQ was great. Nice atmosphere with lots of locals bragging about how they loved the food! Soft drinks and dessert available too. A great find! Very busy with lots of locals picking up to go orders from

Our server had the best attitude and nicest southern bell accent even though she didn't think so. The food was all really quite good. My wife enjoyed her shrimp and grits. It was a hearty portion and she could not finish it. My son enjoyed the beef pot pie. It had a flaky crust, great flavor, and the beef was super tender. I am a Texan who has lived in the north for a VERY long time. I gave up on the idea of getting a good chicken fried steak in Indiana many years ago. Because of this restaurant, I had my first real chicken fried steak in a VERY long time. Now, I would be lying if I didn't think the batter was too salty. Things happen and getting something too salty is very easy thing to do. I also didn't care for it being served on top of the fries and red beans with rice. In Texas, there are usually two plates. One for the steak and one for the fixings. Would I try it again? You bet! I was just excited it was made from a real piece of round steak. We will be back. That is for sure.

An experienced server would have rejected our appetizer and my plate from the kitchen. Truly the best fried cheese sticks in the area. Level 3 heat, fried to golden, wonderful cheese stretch to the bite. Perfect. But, not tonight. Over cooked, dark brown, greasy, with cheese leaking out. Bitter burnt taste competed with the spice and cheese. Disappointed. Chicken was great as always. Though the spice levels were off tonight. Two of us ordered level 4, the same as on previous visits. This time was very mild. The cheese sticks (lvl3) were WAY spicier. Chicken was not close to previous visits heat levels. And the fries! I just gave up. Should have sent the whole meal back but wanted the chicken and others are the table didn't order the fries so I let it go. Tonight's side of fries was sad to look at under those nice strips. Over cooked, small, dark, broken bits in a pile. Not a single fry over an inch long. Just the dregs of the fry bin scraped from the bottom and dumped on my plate instead of in the trash where they belonged. Service was decent but below past experiences here. Greeted, seated upstairs, waitress stops by to announce she will bring water. Comes back with said water and leaves before taking drink orders or asking if we already knew our appetizer order. Circled back in a bit to take drink orders. When drinks finally made it, we stopped her to order appetizers and entrees. Toward the end of the meal, server did ask if we wanted dessert, nope. Didn't ask if we wanted another drink at anytime. First time we have only had one drink here. Just brought the check. Still plenty of empty tables and a few open bar seats, didn't feel like she was trying to turn the table for next service. Just ticking the boxes: done with food, no dessert, give them the check. Hoping our next visit is closer to earlier experienced than tonight's.
