This place came recommended by friends, and I understand why. No elaborate work was needed on my car--just an oil change and a check on a tire. I appreciated that they called to ask about the type of oil I use and if I wanted them to go ahead and patch up the tire where they found a nail. The owner came out and talked to me about my car at the end. He is both knowledgeable of his trade and fair. It is a small operation, so you will likely need to schedule ahead of time. Just went to Peacock for the first time (our former mechanic had moved out of town) and I could not be happier. They were extremely friendly, straightforward and professional. We needed brake work done and Joe was great -- he explained what needed to be done, quoted what I thought was a very reasonable price, and then did the work fast and efficiently for less than the price he'd quoted. I am so glad to be able to give this review. My daughter was a student at UVA. I live in NJ. It would have been so easy for a mechanic to take advantage of an out of state single mom and her auto naive daughter with an old Jetta (2000). Twice my daughter brought the car there with problems that could have been blown out of proportion and I wouldn't have been able to know the difference, and twice Peacock made the minor repairs that were needed. I can't tell you what a relief it is to not be taken advantage of and to have a trustworthy mechanic. The desk staff was reliable and pleasant. I am tempted to make the 6 hour ride every time my car needs work. I can't say enough good things about this company! read more

We had to take one of our vehicles to the local Toyota dealer for service a few years ago for a warranty-related issue. While we were waiting in the customer lounge a service writer came out and sold an elderly lady a new air filter for her car, saying that the "installation" (which takes 5 seconds and requires no extra parts) of that part would cost $20 on top of the price of the filter. "Get absolutely as much money as you can from your customers because the probably don't know any better" seemed to be their business model. My first encounter with Joe was with a repair job I was doing myself, and it spoke volumes about how he is not like most auto mechanics. I had gotten to a point in the job that was past my ability level and called to see if he could help me out. Joe tried all sorts of tools in ways I never would have thought of, but the part (a badly seized oxygen sensor that I had been mangling for days) would not come loose without stripping the threads. When I asked him how much I owed him for the attempt (he spent probably 30 minutes on it before saying he didn't want to risk going further), he said, basically, "I didn't fix anything, so you don't owe me anything." That initial experience made my wife and I loyal customers until we moved out of Charlottesville, and I'm still searching in vain for a Joe equivalent in the place where we live now. In every experience we had with Joe he demonstrated advanced expertise, honesty, efficiency, and patience in dealing with my stubborn D-I-Y attitude. Not once in a dozen or more visits did I get the impression that Joe was recommending any unnecessary procedures or overcharging for any work. Joe actually found us all sorts of ways to save money on repairs, and his advice has helped me though many repairs and maintenance jobs that I did, or tried to do, myself. The design of the garage is a perfect symbol for the way Joe and Mandy do business: the 2 bays face the parking lot and are wide open. Unlike many other places, you can see what is being done to your vehicle and talk face-to-face with the person working on it without having to go through a service writer or other middleman. We're a few hours away now, but I still have half a mind to take our vehicles there rather than deal with anybody else. Those of you lucky enough to still live in the area would do well to make Joe your mechanic. I give his business my highest recommendation. read more

I have been taking my car to Peacock Auto Service for about two years after relocating from the Boston area. The first thing I asked them was to provide me with a second opinion on a long list of expensive recommendations from one of the larger auto maintenance services in this area. I was pleased to find out that the recommendations of the larger auto maintenance service we're unnecessary. I know I can trust Joe's advice based on my experiences with my Corolla (100,000+ mileage) over the last two years. Joe and Mandy care about their customers and recommend work on your car only when it's needed. Joe and the other technicians have done a great job on standard maintenance, brakes, tires, and everything I've needed. Their rates are reasonable and service is prompt. They are really good people. Peacock is great! They are very honest and get the job done right. I had work done to my a/c last year. All the quotes I got from different places were for $1k. I took my car to peacock and was told it would cost up to $1k, depending on the part. They came back when it was time to install the part and said something between $700-$800. It was wonderful how honest they were, because they easily could have said it would cost $1k, and I wouldn't have known how much it really was. I recommend them to everyone. My fiancé has started taking his car there. Recently I had half my tire peel off on the highway. It was an emergency so I had to go to the closest repair shop which happened to be university tire near big lots. I had bad experiences with them in the past....every time I went they messed something up. Well, this time they put on a tire that was smaller than the others! I wish I could have gone to peacock. read more

I took my 2009 Toyota Camry in for an oil change and general inspection. They told me I needed new air filters due to mouse activity (given where I am living, entirely believable) and a new water pump due to a leak. They were professional, courteous, and very reasonably priced, plus they explained everything so even I could understand it. (I'm the kind of guy who knows where the key goes and little beyond that.) I was visiting Charlottesville and my car started acting up. Took it to Peacock (it was the closest place to where I was staying) and they were so accommodating. I was impressed by their efficiency, their friendliness and their honesty. Honest. With mechanics, that alone is enough of a positive review almost, right? I'm from FL and discovered them 2 winters ago and always go there first when I'm visiting and need help, which is about 2 times/year. I have since heard from a few locals that *everyone* they know goes to Peacock and loves them. I had a battery issue this time, under warranty from a national chain. They checked some things for me and sent me to where I got the battery instead of selling me a battery or additional parts or service. That's how you win loyal customers. Much appreciated! I had just bought a used car from Craigslist on Monday. Put $1000 into the engine on Tuesday. I'm from Norfolk and had to drive to Charlottesville for work on Thursday. As soon as I pull into town, the check engine light goes on, AGAIN. I checked yelp and Peacock had great reviews. I drove over and explained my predicament. Joe, who is amazing - by the way, jumped me in front of everyone else due to me needing to get back to Norfolk that evening. He explained everything to me and got me out of there WAY cheaper than I expected. Because he charged me for the time actually worked on the car not what the book labor rate is. An honest mechanic is hard to find. And, Joe is THE BEST. He even explained that the engine light may come on again and if it did it would most likely be the catalytic converter needing to be replaced. Hopefully not, but don't be surprised due to what had already been repaired. He even recommended a great restaurant across the street to grab a bite while I waited. The food was great, too. Unfortunately, Joe was exactly right, the check engine light came on about a week later - it was the catalytic converter. But, at least, I was mentally prepared for that news. If you are anywhere near Charlottesville and need any work done on your vehicle - don't go anywhere but here. You will never regret it. Thanks, Joe! You ROCK! read more

Dealing with a VW can be expensive, but I'm never worried about being overcharged for random services or extra, unnecessary additions at Peacock. Joe and Mandy are the best. Only place I take my car for service and work needed. They always work with me and my crazy schedule to get my car in for services, etc. They are especially convenient if you work downtown since you can drop the car off and walk to work and then get it at the end of the day.
