I was living in Charlottesville for a few amazing weeks and on the day I was set to return to my home up North my car, White Lightning ('93 Ford Escort GT) as she is know to my friends and family, decided she too loved C'ville and refused to budge. Strange electrical things were happening, certain lights weren't working, the windshield wipers acted like they were in molasses, dials were spinning, the regular beeps and dings sounded like they were re-sampled and most importantly she wouldn't turn over. Crap. I called a garage that had been recommended to me and did not appreciate the way I was spoken to. Through the phone I could hear the "cha-ching!" sound and imagined 2 dollar signs popping up in the eyeballs of the man on the phone. "Well we'll hook it up to the computer and run diagnostics on it and test out the electrical system and blah blah blah and this will cost $50 and then we'll figure out what's wrong and then charge you for that..." Call me crazy but don't tell me what you need to do to fix my car without even looking at the car. What if I don't need those particular tests, why start there and start charging me for it? I don't know cars but I know computers and you can't fix 'em over the phone and you can't do it randomly, you have to do it hands on. So I turned to Yelp and I'm SO glad I found the original review. I called Mike late in the afternoon and told him my sob story. He plainly explained his policies for pricing and visits etc - he charges a modest amount to come out to your location and diagnose your vehicle. He will then apply that money to the repair job if you give him the gig so in essence it didn't cost you anything to have him come over. Keeps him from getting ripped off - fair enough. He had a number of customers ahead of me but agreed to at least stop by that day since after all, I was trying to get home and was stressing out. He came exactly when he said he would. He told me my battery was dead and began to jump start the car. I informed him that I had just had a new battery and new starter put in within the last 6 months. He did some messin' around for about 5 minutes and determined it was my alternator. He not only figured out what was wrong, he explained it to me - like, explained how this engine part worked, how it all tied in to the symptoms I had been seeing in recent days, how he knew this was the issue by demonstrating to me his hypothesis. He did this with respect, he did this because he is fair and transparent and just trying to earn an honest dollar with a hard days work and wants to build a solid reputation. Well that's how you do it Mike. He got me a fair price quote for the part (I googled it later) and a generously fair quote for the labor. We agreed it could wait until the next day and again he came over exactly when he said he would. He fixed the car with a quickness because he knows what he's doing. He didn't tinker around, he didn't figure it out along the way. He made sure everything was okay and then he disappeared into the sunset - my mechanic in shinning armor. I am 100% happy with this experience and wholeheartedly recommend Convenient Auto Repair. Wow, what an honest guy. My first issue was when the plastic cover on the bottom of my car shredded when I ran over an ice chunk. Mike took it off, told me it would be a waste of money to replace it, and only charged me the fee he charges to come out and look at a car. Then, a couple hours later he called back, and asked if he'd told me they charged to come out. When I said yes, he informed me that had he not, he would have ripped up the check and done the service for free. Fast forward a few months, and the check engine light comes on in my car. Mike comes to the rescue again, tells me I probably didn't screw the gas cap on tight enough (oops!), resets the computer, and tells me to call him if the light comes on again (but that it probably won't). He did all this for no charge. I honestly don't know how he makes a living like this, but I'll keep giving him all my car repairs. read more

This isn't really a review of Convenient Auto Repair as it is of Mike. After a nightmare of vacation car battery issues we tried to fix ourselves, we sat stranded in a Charlottesville, VA hotel. We called Mike early on a Monday and he promised to get there as soon as possible. When Mike and his assistant (I'm sorry I don't remember his name) got there they had us start the car again ... and it worked. He explained our key was the issue because it needed to reset after we changed the battery. So, they drove out to us and put up with out repeated phone calls for nothing. And that's what they charged us. Many places would have at least charged a small fee for taking the time to come. Not Mike. We cannot recommend them highly enough. read more

I found Mike's name on the UVA parents Facebook page. He was recommended as doing good work at a fair price. The huge bonus is that he comes to you. As an out-of-state parent with a busy college student, dealing with auto repairs is difficult. I called Mike late one day and he was there to do the repair the next morning. He transported the car himself to his shop when it needed more extensive work. He couldn't have been more responsive, pleasant, or professional. He did the work quickly, and his price was very fair. I explained to him how I had to get to work on Sunday and he didn't want to leave me high and dry so he came out to take a look. I traded cars with my dad, and found out when taking it for its state inspection that the rear motor mount was completely shredded. I'm a student here, and I didn't exactly bring my engine hoist to Cville, so I needed to get it fixed fast. The garages I talked to quoted me at $350-$370 to fix it. Mike came by and picked up the car (he was even willing to come late in the day to accommodate my schedule) , and returned it the next morning. I found Convenient Auto Repair online last night as I desperately searched for a nearby garage. My car started making a horrific rattling noise underneath when the car turned on, and I didn't know what could be wrong with it or whether or not the problem might pose any danger. I live outside the city and am pretty well stranded without a vehicle. Well, I called Mike at 9:00 AM and explained the situation to him. Unfortunately, he was totally booked up for today but could make it out to my place at 9:30 AM tomorrow morning. I think he could tell that I was frustrated by not being able to get to work (or anywhere), but Mike was kind, patient, and very friendly. Well, much to my surprise, Mike called me back around 11:15 AM and asked for my address. He took time out of his busy schedule to come take a look at my car almost a full day before he said he could. Thankfully, the problem was a simple fix. The bolts on the heat shield above the gas can had rusted all the way through, and the shield was rubbing against the gas can and other parts. Mike fixed it then and there, and in less than fifteen minutes, my car no longer made that horrific noise. Other garages would see $$$, but Mike charged a very fair flat service fee and nothing extra for the little parts he put on to secure the heat shield. He clearly explained what the issue was, what caused it, and what he did to fix it in a manner that is, quite frankly, only found in the best of teachers. My daughter recently noticed that her Audi A4 car brakes did not work properly. I was really worried to let her drive it to a mechanic but fortunately we found Mike's Convenient Auto Repair on yelp and he agreed to come out to take a look. I live in NY and I have never heard of a mechanic coming to you. This concept is totally foreign to me. Mike diagnosed the brakes and he figured it may be the booster valve which is not providing enough vacuum to assist with the breaks. Mike was upfront with the cost and I never felt obligated to go with him. Mike couldn't have been more helpful!! I just moved to Charlottesville this weekend, and on my way here, my clutch went out. After calling numerous places for estimates and feeling people out, (one garage wanted to charge me $400-500 for a part that cost $127) I found Convenient Auto Repair. I will admit that, at first, I was skeptical since he is a mobile unit. However, he couldn't have proven me more wrong. He estimated a labor cost that was almost half what some wanted to charge. He also did a huge repair in ONE DAY, allowing me to have my car for work the next day. When I picked it up, Mike explained what caused the clutch to go out and told me what to look out for in the future. He also replaced a broken intake bolt that he noticed might be causing problems without charging anything extra. He clearly knows what he is doing and is an honest guy. Left Mike two messages and though he was off Sunday, he called me back before 8AM today (Monday). He came out before 9:30AM to figure out what was wrong with my car and was back by 12:15pm to fix it. It turned out to be a bad sensor (my car had been cutting off while driving it several miles Saturday night). Why did I love his service? I moved to Charlottesville a couple of months ago and needed some basic work done to my car. I checked yelp and found Mike had the best reviews. I gave him a call and true to the reviews he seemed like a very nice guy. Unfortunately, he was not very specific on what he expected from my end, and never having worked with a mobile auto service repair man, I had no idea what to expect. A lack of communication left me without my car fixed, and Mike not returning my messages to reschedule. After some warning lights came on in my car, I gave Mike a call. He came the same day to check it out, make sure nothing dangerous was happening and reset the computer to make sure something was the matter and it wasn't just a loose gas cap or something. He did not charge me. When the lights came back on, he came by again. When it turned out the problem was that I had let the car go WAY too long without an oil change, he charged me an extremely reasonable amount of money to do the oil change and make sure nothing else was going on. I also received a very educational lecture about what happens when oil gets old. LOL! I genuinely learned a lot. Would definitely recommend. Do you have a son or daughter at UVA with car troubles? Convenient Auto Repair is your solution. My son was ready to return home for winter break and couldn't get his car started. He tried jump starting it but when that didn't work, he called me for advice. Looking for an honest and reliable firm, I found Convenient Auto Repair on Yelp and after reading the stellar reviews, suggested my son call them. With a call to them first thing next morning, Mike said he could come out and take a look at the car between 11 am and 2 pm. He showed up as promised and diagnosed a bad alternator. My son needed to get back home that day for a work commitment starting the next day, but since the alternator needed to be ordered and couldn't be installed until the next day, my son left the car keys with Mike and made other arrangements for a ride home that night. Mike said he would put a fully charged battery in the car temporarily, just to get it to his place, replace the alternator there and hold the car until Saturday when we were able to drive back down to pick it up. He agreed to meet us at the Burger King in Ruckersville at 11 am on Saturday, saving us the dreaded extra half hour of driving through the C'ville shopping corridor on Rte 29. He arrived promptly at 11 am, handed over the keys and we were back on the road headed home. I can't say enough good things about this experience. Mike was thoughtful, professional, honest and fairly priced. Mike is the best. I purchased a car with the check engine light on. He quickly diagnosed the problem and told me the car was fine. Mike could have easily earned well done over a thousand by replacing an unnecessary part. Due to the age and the fact that the issue was not affecting the car, he did not recommend replacing the part. When I tried to pay him the $75 fee, he did not accept as he was test driving a recent repair. Mike said, "Do me a favor, take that money and go buy a quart of oil."
