I started using Finley's because I was tired of the Honda dealer doing me wrong. Finley's was okay at fist. But recently I went in for an oil change. The lady at the front desk said I was "required" to use synthetic oil. When I questioned that (I'm a bit of a car nut), she said I should look it up on the internet or my service manual. And she went ahead and wrote up my work order for synthetic oil (which BTW costs twice as much as regular oil). So I went home and looked it up. Nowhere does it say synthetic oil is required. In fact, it can be bad for older cards (it finds leaks). In fact, it is not even recommended. Sites will tell you the benefits (such as longer between oil changes, better gas mileage), but never any mention of being required. When will companies learn that tricking a customer increases their revenue for that one day - but will lose them future business when the customer goes somewhere else from now on. BTW the sticker they put on the window (to remind me of my next oil change) still said only 5,000 miles - not the 7,000 or 10,000 that is usual for synthetic oil Good night Finley's. Generally nice folks to interact with. I came in for a new serpentine belt on a 2007 Saab 9-5, which they did for $215. They replaced a brake light bulb that was out at no extra charge (without asking but that's ok with me). They also added 2 quarts of oil (for $15) without asking, but that's not an unreasonable price for needed oil so overall it was a good experience. read more

Regular oil change on my Subaru, and they added on a cabin filter and air filter change without even asking me. I changed the cabin air filter only 5,000 miles ago, and the air filter 10,000 miles ago. According to Subaru, these are 20k and 30k services. So they threw out perfectly good filters and charged me a lot for new ones. They also marked up a battery I supposedly "had to have" by $100 more than I could buy it. And they get parts discounts! So they rip people off, just another dishonest repair shop. read more

This place is located within the exxon station. It was kind of hard to see from the road but when i pulled it it was clear i was at the right spot. My friend and I came by with our cars today because our blinkers weren't working. Also, she needed a license plate put on her car. When we got there the gentlemen that helped us were so nice and friendly. It turned out there was a super easy fix and we didn't even need work done on our cars so we didn't even get charged a fee. I will definitely be coming back here for future work. Awesome place!!! read more

Finley's Service Center - Front of the auto place - Tires Near Me - Charlottesville, Virginia

I brought my truck in for 3 things: 1) replace the damaged hood; 2) fix the failing front U-joint; and 3) redo the starter they "fixed" on my last visit. They failed on all three tasks. 1. They put a red hood on my black truck and would not give me any reduction in price. They didn't say a word about it until when I came to get my truck. I would've challenged them more on this but I needed to get my truck back. 2. The front U-joint completely failed a week after Finley's "fixed" it ... when I was 400 miles away. I had to tow it to a stranger shop where they replaced both U-joints for $200. Finley's had previously charged me $230 to "repair" the one. Finley ended up giving me $230 in store credit. I wanted a refund not credit, but this was the best I could get after a prolonged/pointless back and forth where they wouldn't call me back for weeks, gave me misinformation, and put the burden on me to gather information from the out of state mechanic. The out of state mechanic said it failed because Finley's never tightened the bolt. Finley's claimed it was a product failure. I was on the highway when it failed - very dangerous!! 3. The original repair was a starter months before which I had to go back for 2 times. The starter still isn't right. read more

We were traveling in the Charlottesville area and it felt like something was wrong with the transmission in my Volvo S80. We called from the road and Ray said come on by and we'll check it out. It was a busy Monday morning and they got to me within 10 minutes, which was fabulous! Great service, friendly and understanding. They ended up referring us to a transmission specialist and Ray said "Use my name." I can't thank you enough. We got answers in no time and saved our vacation. read more

When I brought my car in for an oil change, they took a look and told me I didn't need one. I had been operating from outdated assumptions about changing the oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles instead of reading the Owner's Manual that said otherwise. I'm sure there are other places in town that would have taken the view that "if the lady wants an oil change, that's what we'll do for her" and happily billed me for one. Was running around all of Charlottesville trying to get my truck to start again. I started with these guys because they did some work for me in the past, but they couldn't find anything wrong with it. They called me and said they wouldn't charge me because they didn't fix anything and couldn't get the truck to recreate the problem I was describing. I appreciated their honesty and willingness to not rip me off. I took it to several other shops- all of which charged me a diagnostic fee and replaced something that didn't end up fixing the problem. Finally I took it back to these guys and was able to recreate the problem I was describing. They fixed it in less than 24 hours and the price was incredibly reasonable. No problems since- won't be wasting my time with any other mechanics in cville from now on. read more

I dropped off my car for break work and was told that the back breaks were bad and they mentioned nothing about the front breaks. When I came to pick it up, they told me the front breaks had 100 miles left on them. The bill for the back breaks was $650. They added another $330 or so for the front breaks and the bill was $980 plus. I drove the car for 100 miles, and true to his word, the front breaks went out and the break light has been blinking the entire time. I told him I would not pay for the labor, stopped the payment on the check, offered to pay for the parts and he had me arrested. True story. Do not go there. This man is insane and makes false allegations and now I am forced with hiring and attorney to fight him. DO NOT GO THERE! I am not from San Fransisco, CA, I am from Charlottesville, Virginia. This man is outrageous and a liar. read more

Probably one of the best auto mechanics in C'ville. Service was fantastic! It's located at a gas station, so don't miss it! The staff was friendly and it was easy to contact them by phone to make an appointment. The mechanics here are honest and charge very little compared to other auto service centers I've been to. I got the annual Virginia inspection, oil change, battery service, and cabin filter replacement all done for $120. They called me with an estimate before proceeding which I really appreciated. Everything got done within several hours and I was able to pick up my car in a timely manner. Highly recommend Finley's! This will be my go-to auto service place from now on. read more

I have been to Finley's twice. The first time, I wanted to discuss my car and ask some questions, but they would not listen to me and rushed to get me to pay and go out the door. I thought it might just be because they were very busy at the time, so it did not stop me from returning. When I returned yesterday, I was the first one to drop off my car in the morning and I was the only customer there when I picked up my car in the evening. For such a small shop, it is amazing how they just treated my car as a number and did not answer my questions about why I was having trouble with my battery. I went to AutoZone this morning, and it turns out that the battery is fine, but there is a problem with the alternator. So now I have to spend more time finding a mechanic to fix this, when I had originally asked Finley's to look into why I have been having trouble starting my car with a new battery. I will not be returning to Finley's, and I recommend anyone with any issues that they are trying to diagnose to go to other mechanics. Finley's will not have a conversation with you, and they only seem to do the bare minimum. read more

Mark Finley and his team have been caring for our cars for 20 years. Their service has always been courteous (in every way), and their pricing seems fair to me. (Hard to understand the comment about failing inspection/$300 -- does not sound like Finleys at all.) Every employee has been attentive, friendly, and professional. Among our vehicles is an old Range Rover, and they service it as needed. Recently had a problem with the brake fluid hosing, which Finleys didn't have the right tools to fix. Mark sent me to another service center that does a lot of foreign vehicle repairs -- got good friendly service there, too. Finley's is a class act. Many of our friends use them, and they are as pleased as we've been. read more

They looked at my car for State inspection and said my car failed and needs $600 worth of repairs and work just to pass the inspection... I took it to a dealership in town the very next day and told them these folks had failed me but I wanted a second look bc I had no issues with the car. Wouldn't you know it, the dealership of all people said I needed NONE of the work these guys said I needed just to pass state inspection. I almost got ripped off from this shop. The lady at the front is nice but I don't trust them for work on cars. Unfortunate, as I hoped to see good honest work done here. Please take your car elsewhere. read more

Excellent mechanic! I work next door at Primary Eyecare and all of my coworkers have always gone to Finley's. I was new to the area 9 months ago and this service center was the third mechanic we have tried and I will now still with them. They have shown me parts that need to be fixed and never try to replace things that really don't need to be replaced. They are very trustworthy. Easy to work with and kind people. Being bit more expensive than other places would have to be my one and only slight complaint. They are just so convenient. read more

Took our SUV here, paid $500 to have a pulley fixed (a little steep) only to have the same issue just two days later when we drove more than a few miles, making the same sound it was making before they "fixed" it. Will not go back or recommend this shop. read more

This place reminds me of my grandfather's Esso/Exxon station in Alexandria, Va where I worked in high school, in college, in the Army, and anytime I was home. People still come in to ask directions or just to use the bathroom. I could immediately sensed that Mark Finley treated people the way we had treated them in my many years at my grandfather's. My mother-in-law lives in Crozet and she comes in her all the tine because they pump her gas. She had a flat tire and drove on it, so she pretty well destroyed it. She had her car towed here and they replaced the tire and told her the other three needed replacing. When I called about a month I spoke to Vivian and she remembered her. She checked the records and told me that the mechanic had told her the other 3 tires needed to be replaced. This impressed me because it showed me they keep records on their customers their vehicle's history. I drove down from Centreville and took my mother-in-law's car in to replace the other three tires. Brandon helped me and he was very friendly. The work was done in less than an hour and I never considered the price because I knew I was being treated fairly. It's nice to deal with people you trust. I told Mark I would always stop by whenever I was in town and I intend to. The only regret I have is that I didn't know Mark when my daughter attended UVA. read more

I will not take my cars anywhere else in Charlottesville. I've never been been nickel and dimed or misled in any way. All the shop guys are really nice and will talk to you about what's up with your car, if you want to know. There are not many shops where you get to talk with the person that actually does the work. For me, this is a huge plus. They are very reasonable about pricing parts and work hard to accomodate your schedule. My family and I take all our cars here for inspections/repairs, since we don't have any new cars/dealership appointments. We also get most of our gas here since their price is always competitive. They do a great job with imports too, and have done excellent work on our BMWs, Subarus, and Toyotas. NEVER has a repair come back faulty. This locally owned garage has a good reputation and is recommended by locals for most car repairs. Call a day or two ahead and make an appointment. Charges seemed to increase a bit in 2011 with the addition of a full time assistant, who is stationed at the counter when you come in.Most folks feel the quality of work here is very good for what you pay. ($65 for an oil change). Please read the Google reviews. There is some concern about axle and rotor work. If a mechanic accidentally breaks something, does the customer have to pay to get it fixed? Finley's is so irresponsible. Two weeks ago, I took my car in for an inspection. They failed it, stating that there were 4 things wrong. They offered to fix my car for $650 and pass it. I told them to just fail my car. The next week, my friends and I took my car in the same condition to another auto shop. The second auto shop told me that everything Finley's listed was fine. My brake hoses, which Finley's never mentioned anything about, had fatal cracks. My friend helped me fix it. The second auto shop passed it a day later. It only costed $120. This only goes to show that Finley's didn't even inspect my car in the first place, or if they did, they did a terrible job. I would never go back nor would I recommend anyone else to. read more

I am new to Charlottesville and have found one of the true gems in town! Finleys will be getting my business from now on! The low tire pressure light came on in my Explorer as I was driving my 4 year old to preschool. I hustled to one service station and their air pump was in use. Next closest was Finleys. Enter two wonderful gentlemen. The first came over and started checking my tire pressure without my even having to ask. He said hi to my son which made his day. The second noticed that I had a piece of plastic hanging down from under my front bumper and came over with a drill and new screw and fixed it on the spot, also without my even asking! No charge for anything and I was out of there to get to preschool dropoff within 5 minutes. I will be telling everyone I know about Finleys and bringing my vehicles for service. I moved to Charlottesville last year and as a female, it's often a challenge to find trust worthy establishments for car repairs. I stopped by Finley's one day while it was pouring rain because my wipers just stopped. The serviceman quickly repaired my wipers for free in the rain and was happy to do so. Since then I have returned for minor repairs and been treated with nothing but kindness. I live close by and it is such a relief to know that if anything comes up with my car, I have found a trustworthy service establishment.!! read more
