This café and bakery is in the Whitehall section. Surrounded by a community of homes and small businesses. It shares a building with a great pizzeria. Today was "take my retired husband to work with me." We got done early and I took him for a late lunch. He wanted to try this market café. It's got a very nice modern, albeit slightly rustic homey interior. There is a handful of tables to eat in and a counter with stools. (Take out or eat in) You order at the main counter and staff can bring your packaged items to your seat if dining in. The young staff member that took our sandwich orders didn't know if my turkey was cold cuts or made in house. A male staff member was walking near her, and I asked this question and he informed me that they do roast their own meats and poultry, and they were not cold cuts . There are several cases that house specific grab and go home cooked items, some produce, and frozen treats. We each ordered a sandwich. My husband got the chicken salad sandwich on store made brioche bread. I got the turkey club on brioche bread. I was a little surprised that sides of any type were not included with the sandwiches. (Pickles? Chips?) I ordered a side of potato salad and they indicated I could take the quarter pound container that was in the refrigerated case for five dollars. The potato salad was a red skin variety. It had a similar taste to what you would expect potato salad with mayonnaise to taste like, but it had other spices and ingredients that I could not identify that gave it a paprika colored tint. Perhaps the potatoes weren't fresh because they were somewhat gummy. We did not finish them. My husband said his chicken was tough and stringy. He also said they skimped on the portion. Although the bread was very tasty and fresh, it did not hold up well as a sandwich and fell apart bite after bite. The only other choice for sandwich bread was a potato bun. My turkey club was missing bacon. I told a staff member about this and they brought me a container of three pieces of cooked cold bacon. It was covered in cold bacon grease. (You can view the photos). They could've at least warmed up the bacon. The positive is that they do roast their own meats and poultry & bake most of their own baked goods.. We got two bottles of the store named purified water along with the potato salad and the two sandwiches. It came out to $36. My husband gave a two dollar cash tip to the cashier. Staff was nice & place was clean and quaint. I think this place has a lot of potential, but they need to work on several things. read more
