The name is "Bar & Grill" and the menu, which is vast, looks like a combination of bar, grill, and diner. First the menu: You're given two. One is breakfast and the other is lunch-dinner. The menu is highly colored and a bit hard to read on the dark color background with white text so at first, you may not realize the scope of their offerings. Everything from salad, soup, sandwiches, wraps, flatbreads, full breakfast to "legendary steaks", liver and onions, Angus burgers, BBQ and other diner specials. You'd be well advised to look up the menu online before coming to get a sense of the scope. The setting: definitely "bar." Many tables are high tops with heavy iron bar seating with backs. Hard to move. If you don't like sitting at high tops, you'll be fighting for the booths or tables. I personally hate high top seating, so it wasn't the most comfortable place for me. The food: It was lunchtime, so we ordered a turkey club and a Reuben. I had the club. It was on toasted rye. No mayo, no condiments on dry toast at all. And none offered or suggested and no mayo packet on the side. The bacon was cooked in advance, cold, tough and congealed. The turkey was the cut-off-roasted-breast kind therefore dry as can be, and could have desperately used some kind of condiment. The single piece of lettuce was so limp, it could have been used as a flag. The tomato was good. I made it through maybe 1/4 of the sandwich and gave up after eating the tomato. Pepsi products on the fountain, only Pepsi Zero not Diet Pepsi. Someone at a nearby table ordered some kind of grilled meat on a bone (couldn't tell from the menu what it was) and it looks very appetizing (crusted with something, maybe a porkchop?) The menu is crazy long but they couldn't make an edible sandwich. So that makes me wonder if they are over-ambitious, cooking or if it's a place where you'd better know what to order and what to avoid. First Watch is a breakfast/brunch/lunch place that closes by 2:30pm and serves breakfast, lunch and surprisingly, drinks (well, not so surprising, brunch means Bloody Marys or mimosas, doesn't it?) The decor is California modern with a kind of garage-cool-bistro vibe. The tables are comfortable, the chairs slide easily and it's not too noisy inside. Outside dining as well. Friendly servers and plenty of them available to tend to the tables. The lunch tends to be quite busy. The menu? Well, there were too many things I liked to make an easy choice. Sandwiches, four of them come so you can order a half and a soup or half salad. The sandwiches are large. There is a veggie and a turkey burger as well. Soups included tomato basil and broccoli cheddar, but the broccoli soup ran out so chowder was on offer instead. Some food is vegan and some is gluten free but they don't offer non-shared surfaces or fryers so if you can't have cross contamination, you're out of luck. Of course "traditional" breakfast is available, avocado toast, eggs benedict, eggs-and-meat, pancakes, waffles, strawberry French toast, and I can't believe it, biscuits and gravy, either as a breakfast with eggs and potatoes or as a side. More on this later. There are also tacos (barbacoa) omelets, frittatas, chimichurri steak and eggs, and French toast. Also wraps and bowls. The emphasis is on (more or less) healthy or at least trendy, so the sausage was turkey sausage in the biscuit and gravy. We ordered one roast beef and horseradish sauce sammie with a side of salad or soup, the soup was chowder (it was...ok. A Bostonian would have something to say, but it was fine if you ignore the alien red bell pepper that a New Englander would raise an eyebrow at.) The sandwich had sauteed onion, havarti cheese and argula and was absolutely delish. My dining partner devoured this (I did get a bite to verify its excellence.) The soup was a good sized cup. I had the biscuit and gravy side. Plenty of fresh black pepper and the turkey sausage was well-seasoned. The biscuit was buttery. It could have been served hotter (it was lukewarm) but this is a perpetual problem I have with US restaurants serving less than piping hot food that will cool off too much as you eat. It was just on the point of being "not ok" so I ate it all. I think they poured the gravy out and it sat, waiting on the sandwich, which is why it cooled down. However, it was really good. I haven't had good biscuits and gravy since I moved back from the Midwest and this hit the spot. The menu prices are reasonable, especially considering what you get; well prepared and interesting food that isn't run-of-the-mill breakfast or brunch. Today, I'm seated in a small booth by the entrance, and as someone who enjoys people-watching, I've been paying attention to how they interact with customers. They truly have a gift for conversation. The small, personal exchanges they have with each guest show a real attention to detail. For some customers, they know personal details--asking about family members and sharing genuine concern. For others just passing through, they take the time to learn where they're from, how long they're staying, and wish them well on their visit. They work seamlessly as a team. Everyone steps in to support one another, and no one misses a beat. It's a well-oiled machine, and their experience clearly shows. I'm not sure how long some of them have been here, but larger companies could definitely learn a thing or two from this level of teamwork and service. They are attentive, friendly, and professional. Lastly, the food--absolutely outstanding. Everything tastes fresh, and I've tried several different meals without a single disappointment. And the coffee? Excellent.
