Let's just say I wasn't sure - so I avoided it. Went in tonight as I was dying for a simple burger and didn't want all the trappings of other places around from an investment standpoint. Boy, was I glad I did. I grew up in NJ - diners are a religion. This, to me, was a nicer (yet still casual and welcoming) diner. There's no neon and stainless steel to let me think it was a diner - but it's the best of a family-style restaurant and the diner we all know and love. Service was simply fantastic. Friendly, prompt, fun/funny. Atmosphere comfortable and not pretentious. Food: I had a simple cheeseburger and rather than fries, took them up on their offer for a small bowl of soup. All - exactly what I had hoped. Cook on the medium rare burger was clinically perfect. Meat to bun ratio was spot on. Hot, juicy. Terrific. Giving four stars in its category today as I want to dive deeper into the menu. I want to try their coleslaw, and pickles, and a chicken strip, fries, onion rings/straws before I hold it truly against a classic diner. But let's put it this way - I can't wait. Ps. The soup was sweet and peppery which is my favorite. The mussels marinara were ok, the marinara was think and didn't go well with the mussels. Lemon chicken dinner was really good. Took it to go and heated at home but was tender and tasty! The folks next to us had burgers, they looked good but didn't try myself so will have to go back!

So, when my buddy and I ended up in Thomaston for a wake yesterday, that gave me a reason to add a second Thomaston review, courtesy of our lunch visit to the Black Rock Tavern and Restaurant. It's a quintessential neighborhood bar and restaurant conspicuously located on Main Street. It is set up in the typical way -with a sit-down dining room on the left and the bar on the right. Black Rock takes up a pretty large space because it also has a banquet room. We sat at the bar, grabbed two beers ($5 for a Naragansett and $8 for a Guiness) and chit-chatted with our friendly bartender Maureen before we checked out their food menu. Black Rock had very nice food choices, ranging from appetizers to salads to wings to mains to burgers to sandwiches. I decided on a BBQ Beef Quesadilla ($21) with braised beef, melted cheddar jack cheese, pico, salsa, sour cream and a small salad on two grilled flour tortillas. It was yummy and a pretty big portion, so two of the four wedges came back home with me. My friend ordered a BRT Smashburger ($18) with a $3 side of cole slaw. He must have really enjoyed it because he turned back an empty plate to Maureen. If you really enjoy neighborhood type bar/restaurants, you will definitely enjoy a visit to the Black Rock tavern.

The parking lot was full of people getting ready to go golf so I imagine that the bar contend to get full in the afternoon. We used half of the room and it was plenty space for the 28 people we had. They were very accommodating and willing to set up tables and get anything we needed. Everything was set up on time and professionally. We had a Buffet style lunch. We kept the food simple with chicken, marsala, meatballs, pasta with sauce, roasted potatoes, green beans, salad, and bread. Everything was very delicious. The view is beautiful and we loved the large the windows and the porch. We definitely would recommend hosting an event here.
