I booked this place for a solo trip after reading a good review from a writer/speaker that I respect. I was looking for a place for a quiet get away for relaxation, introspection, and opportunities to experience Tulum. I don't think I am exactly the target demographic for this resort. If you are looking for an all inclusive experience where you don't leave the resort and engage in resort activities, this is the place for you. It seems to be very popular with Italians. There are two buffet style restaurants on site. I didn't eat here except for breakfast one morning, but the dinner seems to be a basic buffet affair.
This resort was not in alignment with my intended vacation. So looking beyond that to actual negatives, the negatives to this place are the front desk customer service (upon arrival in the late afternoon, check out morning time seemed fine). I asked about signing up for the excursions listed on the website and was told that I could go find the activities team who were "around". (f you cross-check TripAdvisor, you'll see many mentions of this same poor service) When I finally found someone from the team, he showed me the daily activities, which included things like stretching, beach volleyball, and the nightly show. After a long day of travel, finally I talked to Jennifer who I found to be the most helpful in the group. She was unaware of what was actually listed on Pavo's website, but did end up making some calls to her contacts and arranging what I wanted. The other large negative was the nightly show. The show is held in an outdoor amphitheater, which I was not exactly close to (my room faced the beach). It didn't matter if you wanted to attend the show or not, you were going to hear it. With loud music and pumping bass until 23:00, not what I bargained for. I know I sound like a wet blanket, and don't begrudge anyone their good time, but I like the choice of not having to participate.
Also of note: Wi-Fi is paid, unless you're in the lobby where it is free.
The pro to this place was that it was right on the beach. The beach was beautiful, as the beaches in Tulum are. It was very private and not crowded. They give a towel allowance of one per guest per day. There are also beach chairs and stationary umbrellas which help if you want to stay out of the sun. There are a few pools, which I never went in (actually I never saw anyone in them) but looked very nice. The staff in general seem very nice and keep a clean and safe place.
So in short, if you're looking to party like a middle aged Italian, this is the spot for you. read more
