They didn't explain to me that the student cutting my hair was "phase 1" at all. This is the worst haircut I've ever gotten. The color is also not what I wanted. The student had no idea what they were doing. I look ridiculous. I asked them to cut the existing layers one inch shorter. They cut huge chunks out of my hair. There were two students cutting, one on either side. There is no way that I can wear my hair now that looks halfway decent. Please do not go here! It is not worth saving the money! read more

I have been a client of Paul Mitchell in St. Louis for many years and loved the service. When I tried the Paul Mitchell in Pasadena, I had a different experience. I found the three times I went, the students did not know how to cut curly hair. The first time, the preceptor had to intervene. The second time (I went to be sure my first experience was not a one off) the student didn't know how to cut my hair and the preceptor didn't know either. I came here for a cut and style today. Giving three stars because the student who cut my hair was really nice, but when she finished my hair, she pulled it back behind my shoulders. Once I arrived home, I pulled it forward and it is so noticeably uneven (one side longer than the other). I know that she is a student, but an instructor did not ever check my haircut. So this is not so much a review for the student but for the professionals who should be checking and making sure their students are not messing up people's hair. I just went here for a second time to get my hair done before starting work again! The first time I was feeling colorful and also had root growth for the whole covid year so I went to get it cut and rose gold colored for 1/4th (possibly more!) the price of what salons were quoting me (they were also telling me it would take multiple sessions at $300 each but Paul Mitchell students were able to do everything in one day!). I know my hair was going to be a lot of work so it took the whole morning shift! Tony was the future professional assisting my assigned professional and I noticed how quick and expertly he worked so I requested him for my second appointment (about 3 months later?)! My pink had faded and I noticed how my hair was different shades of light blonde, yellow and orange and definitely wanted to fix that before showing back to work. I showed Tony a picture of the ash blonde color I wanted and he suggested how to fix/lighten my hair so it would be a little more low maintenance to touch up. He did an amazing job touching up my roots and blending them into my fixed blonde hair! I thought it would be faster than the previous session, but it still took about the same amount of time since my whole head of hair needed fixing! Throughout the session he taught me how to maintain and keep my hair/scalp healthy. Definitely going back to him, but I'll miss him when he's done with the program! I'm excited to see his professional career blossom! I first came here because I wanted a new look for a good price and that's what I got! I really don't like leaving bad reviews but this is just for the sake of saving you some time. Please don't go here. It is a bad vibe. Not worth it at all. If you're going here to save some money, I recommend just going to a fantastic sams because there are actually some amazing and experienced people who work at "cheaper" salons and will treat you with kindness and respect. This school is chaotic and disorganized. It's like a lottery if you get someone who actually knows how to cut and style curly hair. If you have straight hair, I think you'll be okay but I really don't think it's safe for someone with curly hair. If I could give 0, I would! Reading the negative reviews, I should know better. I got the strand test 3 weeks ago by a student. She even took a pic of it. A male instructor saw it and said I should good to go for the hair relaxer. Today, came there and the instructor said there's no results of the test last time, and they need to repeat and charge me again to repeat the test. On top of that, I would not be able to do the hair relaxer today. Their excuses are they are school and works differently from other hair salon. Bad communications from the beginning. I doubt they are able to do the hair relaxer as they kept making excuses. Don't waste your time here!! Not worth the stress and they will waste your time. Judy, the instructor is rude!! I have gone back to get them another chance, but each time, I have had a problem with their services: 1. Facial-the switched the price. I booked a basic facial and was charged for an extended time. 2. They canceled my appointment when I was already walking in the door as the student I booked with didn't show up, and there was no one else to do my hair. 3. Highlights took 6 hours, and at the end, I had the "highlights" that were the same color as my base color. This was the instructor's fault. 4. Several students would use hot or cold water when rinsing my hair and wet my entire back. 5. Students behave as if entitled to be studying at Paul Mitchell and are rude! I have received various services at PCC Cosmetology School, and they are professional, kind and do amazing work! read more

My student colorist was very diligent and followed instructions, she was gentle and seemed to care a lot about the service she provided and doing a great job. The instructor on the other hand did not seem to be very diligent or possibly even educated concerning highlighting techniques... or perhaps she was purposefully negligent in her instruction out of spite -- she was quite curt during the consultation once I explained what I required -- because I didn't require a complete service that included toner (I only came for highlights, as I am a licensed former professional myself who has spent years perfecting my color formula... obviously I cannot highlight my own hair and I'm no longer working in salons due to medical issues... I thought this would be a great way to give back to my cosmetology school experience, and made sure not to interfere with instruction too much despite my experience and credentials.) Either way, I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable utilizing services here again, and I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable recommending this particular school to prospective students, though I've worked with many reputable beauty service operators who are PM Alumni licensed at other PM School locations. I asked for balayage highlights (I have long hair, cut into a shag with long curtain bangs) that included face framing balayage highlights. This instructor told the student to highlight double slices in the front of my head and helped her section it out. The result is that the section is off center, and extremely bold blonde in stark contrast to what surrounds it. I was instructed over a decade ago when I obtained my license to never place slices anywhere near the hairline, but not only did she instruct the student to do so, she also left the whole rest of the hairline dark, so it looks like those HORRIBLE zebra stripe highlights in the center of the head from the 90s. And again... it's not even centered. Also the sectioning on the sides of the head were off, as indicated when my hair is pulled back by huge blocks (not highlights) of bleached hair... she was also not instructed to "feather" or smudge the bleach from the darkest area at the top into the lengths, which is evident by strong demarcation lines. Luckily, since most of this is in the front I can correct it, and I will be coloring over it anyhow... it's just disappointing and quite frankly a bit alarming to realize that Paul Mitchell School instructors are this uneducated and/or unprofessional. read more

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do your research! do not waste your money here. when i first toured the school i thought it was a cool environment, the only good experience i had was the first two months of school which is considered "core" Mr Alex did the best in teaching us and if it weren't for him i would be a mess on the service floor. we had so many teachers be fired and get new ones the next day and most of them don't even know what they're doing. the receptionist was sleeping with students and overall unprofessional. we only had one good teacher and she was the best. she taught us everything we know and she still continues to teach us outside of school. the school did her dirty, they over worked her after promising her a raise. and didn't honor her days off, they would get mad at her and expected her to be at school 24/7. Only glad that an instructor tried to fixed my front layers after a student cut straight in them without blending the layers in but it still came out uneven and shorter than I asked for. This salon is very clean, professional and the service I received was about 1/4 the price of what I would have paid at my regular salon. Emma, was the future professional who gave me a scalp treatment, shampoo, bang trim and blowout. She was very professional, listened to what I wanted and I am very happy with the end result. Be careful. You might get a great experience or you might not. I went in to get my hair lightened and get a trim with wispy bangs. The color came out beautifully but we ran out of time for the trim, so she said to return in 2 weeks for "toner and a trim.". In 2 weeks I still loved the color but made the mistake of asking why one side was just a smidge lighter and thought maybe down the road we could keep an eye on it. But then they said they'd tone it. I cautioned that I really loved it and did not want it any darker than it was. They promised it would not be darker. I trusted their judgement. The girl took forever scrubbing the toner into my hair over the sink, then left me there for 20 minutes. When the towel was removed my hair was so dark!!! No more highlights! I was shocked. She kept making excuses and said it was just wet but blow drying didn't help... It was still dark. Then they claimed over and over they didn't make it darker! My husband came in and the first thing he said was, "it's a lot darker!". I asked if they could please fix it, reminding them I stressed the fact that I didn't want it darker. It was never explained to me that this toner step would cover up all of my highlights! I begged them to please fix it and that I'd pay the extra, whatever. Then the teacher said it will wash out over time but that there was nothing they could do that day to fix it. The instructor later said I didn't need that service that day at all! But and she did admit that probably a level 9 toner would have been better. It all happened so fast, decisions were made between teacher and student, with no explanation to me as to exactly what it would do to my hair. Before she began I stressed for a second time to the student that I did not want my hair any darker and I showed her the photo to remind her of my original goal... Saying we're already close enough! She assured me again that I needed this toner...but she never explained that my highlights would be gone. I'm not a hairdresser so I trusted her judgement. But Once highlights are gone, of course the hair will appear darker! That was a very important piece of information they left out. I'm very sad. I know it's only hair but a little communication before starting would have avoided this fiasco. I felt like I wasn't really heard and I regret even mentioning that one part was a bit lighter! I would much rather live with that, than what I have now. I hope this doesn't happen to you. Be careful. As for the trim, forget it. I got no wispy bangs. I asked her to stop when I realized she was using thinning scissors in the back on my ends. The teacher came over and did a little tapering on the sides. Expect any service to take 2 times or 3 times as long. Be patient. If you can't handle that, I suggest you spend a few more bucks and go elsewhere. With that said, I got a bayalage and it exceed my expectations! I have black hair, so it took a few more bowls of product and the total only ended up being $102! My stylist- Fiona - was excellent! Her attention to detail, knowledge, customer service are all 10 stars quality. She even went into the detail of asking me how I usually do my hair so she can consider the balayage for ever possible hairstyle. She was also patient to ensure the lightener captured all strands of hairs. Her instructor, Anya, was also super friendly and great. Everyone at the school were super down to earth and fun. Not only do they know about how to technically execute the different services, they are also knowledgeable to the molecular level (just ask about the science behind it!) I am pretty low-maintenance with my hair and wanted to do something different after about 4 years of rocking the same 'do. Curly hair is pretty forgiving with haircuts, so I thought "okay, let's try out a school". If you're concerned that you'll be someone's first guinea pig ever, request a Phase 2 student. They will have a little more experience and it will cost you just a few extra dollars. My total chair time was nearly 5 hours (eek!) But here's what I got: - Shampoo: So relaxing! She used the tea tree oil on me. - Haircut: This part she got done pretty quickly. She also had curly hair like me, so she made sure to check and make sure I was okay with the amount of length we were planning on cutting. - Balyage: I showed her a picture to tell her what I wanted. It didn't turn out super even (see picture), but for a student's work I was pretty happy with it. -Awapuhi treatment: my hair felt SO soft afterwards. Get this done if you can! - Style: This one could have gone better. My hair got a little frizzy at the ends after the style, and I asked for a smoother look. Anyway, all that plus two bottles of products was $73! The value is incredible! We were next door to someone who I guess was performing facials on other students. Since they are aware that there could be outside clientele I would think they'd use soft-spoken voices. That did not happen at all. It made it very difficult to relax and enjoy the facial. Sadly I will most likely not return. Take a page from the Aveda Institute in Las Vegas. I went in last night for my scheduled appointment with Diana at 6pm. My appointment had been canceled and I was never notified. Natalie told me she personally called me. Funny thing is I did not have a message or show a missed call. Natalie was rude, defiant and lacks professionalism. She said "I have to check in other people now" she further said "I called you but I can't remember what time since I call hundreds of people" she proceeded to argued with me and talked over me. I could not get a word in to ask her anything further. She did nothing to try and rectify the situation. There is a total lack of client satisfaction. No sense of responsibility. I did not appreciate being treated poorly and being lied to. Management should formally discipline her for her lack of professionalism. I went in to get a balayage and I know it's a teaching school so they are learning but no one was doing the teaching. The "teacher" was too busy flirting with a student rather than helping the student doing my hair. Since I got there the "teacher" was already rushing the the students to hurry up with me. So the students were being rushed as they are in the process of learning and how can they even learn in that type of environment? I also want to point out that the teacher wanted to do a test strip and she knew i was doing a balayage and she did a very thick "test strip" in the back of my head almost touching my roots, i often put my hair in a bun or ponytail and the huge test strip that the teacher did in the back is very noticeably wrong and doesnt blend in with the rest of my hair. The students have potential but they need the right teacher and the one they got (Jacqueline) AIN'T IT!! With a BETTER teacher that's actually willing to TEACH they can learn a lot more instead of being rushed and not being taught. As a client I didn't appreciate that the "teacher" kept coming over and telling the students to hurry up especially in front of me (the client) I would have appreciated for her to let the students take the right amount of time on my hair instead of just rushing them the entire time I was there. I overheard the teacher after my hair was done saying that "you can tell when someone just doesn't have what it takes" and I wanna say that I agree 100% and SHE is the problem she doesn't have what it takes to be a "teacher". It was completely inappropriate and very unprofessional of her to rush the students and then have the nerve to try to blame them. If the students failed it's because the teacher failed to teach and correct them. Like I mentioned above if the teacher wasn't too busy flirting maybe she could have taught better and my hair wouldnt look a hot mess. This was my first time using the school and I was pretty pleased! Got a cut and color by Annabelle for $65. I wanted to tone down my highlights for a more natural look. I think she did just that! My layers turned out nicely too. It took a little longer than a regular salon--which is to be expected with students. I only deducted a star because some students were swearing like sailors around the color station (not Annabelle though!) I don't really mind swearing but it's not a great look if you want to come off as professional. Parking is a little tricky too. So maybe build in some extra time for parking and the whole student thing. I'd definitely come back! read more

DON'T RISK GOING HERE! IF THEY MAKE A MISTAKE, THEY WILL CHARGE YOU TO CORRECT IT. Yes, it's true. I came here to get my hair dyed a purple ombre color and took a full day off work to have it done. After enduring 8 hours there, I ended up with a blotchy neon purple on top with faded lavender- not ombre at all (I've included photos here). They were supposed to cut my hair as well but ran out of time. Ok, I'll come back to have it re-done. They noted that I paid for both the haircut and the coloring and that it would be re-done (paid $125). I come back on the next available date that trainee Carter Thomas was available which was not within their 7 day "re-do" policy (no one told me that) but since Carter wasn't available within the 7 days, what could be the problem? Carter proceeds to re-do my hair but gets interrupted by the trainers/managers saying, "it'll cost you another $100 to do it over. That's our policy." What??!! So everytime YOU mess up someone's hair, THE CUSTOMER HAS TO PAY FOR YOUR MISTAKE? This made no business sense to me and I was livid. So if you keep making mistakes, DO I HAVE TO KEEP GIVING YOU MONEY TO CORRECT IT? What an interesting way to make money. They even refused to do the haircut that I had paid for. What??! This was the 2nd full day of work I lost due to this sketchy school who has no regard for their customers. I get it, they are learning, but they also need to learn to correct their mistakes. I talked with trainer Carla who was absolutely rude to me, and Tamara Ward who made no effort to resolve the situation. I left with my hair FRAZZLED AND BLEACHED BLONDE - so horrible. How do they sleep at night? Please, for the love of God, don't risk your precious hair to these people. I don't want your experience to be like mine. If you decide to go, at least read the negative reviews so you know what you're walking into. I really feel for these poor students who are not being taught a basic rule in business which is to leave your customer satisfied, at best happy. I told her the colorist wasn't available within the 7 days so booked the appt. in 10 days. They didn't seem to care or make any exceptions, stating that to re-do my hair, it would cost another $100. They offered to cut my hair but the point was to complete and correct the color. Dang! Thanks for a call that just pissed me off again.
