A fantastic surprise awaits at this energetic and inventive restaurant. First the service was impeccable and truly on point. Our server provided exceptional attention and offered great suggestions and details regarding the menu offerings. The cocktail and wine list was extensive and we truly enjoyed the drinks. The food is the star of the show and we decided to go with a small plate tour. If you like tuna DO NOT miss the Tuna Cones! The tuna is fresh, seasoned perfectly and is topped with wasabi foam that literally melts in your mouth. Six come to an order and we almost ordered more. The Peking Duck Tacos are flavorful and complimented nicely with a crispy fried shell. The Asian BBQ ribs are perfectly fall off the bone with a wonderful Asian flare. Lastly the crab cake sits atop a Yellow Beet, Cucumber-Asian Pear Salad. The crab cake is very good, especially when tasted with the unique salad. One caveat is the center seating area is very energetic (loud). However the other areas within the restaurant were much quieter. My wife and I went to Pates for our 11th year anniversary dinner. The atmosphere fit us. Being tattooed, we were uncertain how places in the cape would accept us. Let me start by saying that the food was good and service was great, what the hell is going on with the air conditioning? From what I understand, this is supposed to be a fine dining experience. You are expecting patrons to pay $75-$100 a person, and the dining room was unbearable. This was one of the hottest days I have ever experienced in Chatham, but damn, it was cooler outside. Take care of your patrons. Apologize for the environment. Offer a reduction on the check to compensate. Do something. Act like you care. Couldn't be more disappointed. After reading some of the negative reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect. But we had a gift card so decided to make the two hour drive (one way) to have dinner. I want to say that we experienced none of the issues that others speak of in their negative reviews. The air conditioning was working well, we were not charged when we asked for extra rolls, we were offered tap water as an option etc. So go and judge for yourself. We found the experience quite enjoyable. The place is nice, clean, wait staff was very good, and the food was great. If I have a complaint, I would say my shrimp scampi was good, but not plated well at all. (the pic is how it arrived at the table). I also found the addition of pickled peppers odd. Rolls came with crackers and white bean dip, unique! The grilled artichoke app was delicious and so was the white bolognese. Desserts were large and very good. We can handle them but most would want to share. We got the coconut banana cream in a jar and the Pates snowball which was a ball of vanilla ice cream rolled in sweet shredded coconut with hot fudge. Yum. All in all, a very good experience. We got one app (only enough for one person), one wedge salad, two entrees, two desserts and two sangrias. Total with tax before tip was $145. read more

Came here with my wife and two small kids during July 4th weekend. One of the rare white tablecloth fine dining restaurants that has an extensive kids menu. Yes, it's pricey, but it's fine dining in Chatham. The food was amazing. We got the seared tuna, penne, kids pasta and chicken fingers. The seared tuna in particular was perfect. The appetizers and seafood entrees were delicious. However, 2 of steaks were purple inside and server upset we sent them back to be cooked to medium rare. One was returned blackened, but medium rare inside. The other was returned cooked to medium rare as requested. We had to ask for water several times. Server also got upset when we asked for serving utensils for a second time and then when we ended up sending potatoes back after waiting more than 20 minutes for serving utensils....server rolled her eyes and gave us some attitude which was a bit surprising because who likes cold potatoes? She brought my daughter a small bowl of whipped cream for her birthday celebration while two other tables nearby received full desserts. We have been going to Pates whenever we can get a reservation for the last 3 years. I always get the fish & chips at Pates, it's the best. On our previous visit, both my wife and I got the fish & chips, and it brought back memories -- of Mom's Friday night, burnt, frozen fish sticks -- I hope this is an anomaly. I was so impressed with Pate's, we just moved into the area from Malibu, CA. I had the best steak I've eaten in years. Perfectly cooked, medium rare with delicious fluffy mashed potatoes and delicately flavored spinach. Better, dare I say it, than Maestros's in California! (Also the plates were perfectly warm, my pet peeve is cold plates or worse, so hot the steak overcooks.) A disappointment. We've been going there for several generations, through many iterations, and the renovation is beautiful. Everyone was welcoming and friendly, we had a reservation, and we arrived at 5:00 p.m., when their kitchen opens, so we were seated immediately at a lovely table, with a very cordial server. Then, after having an excellent cocktail, and putting our orders in, we waited for an hour and ten minutes for our entrees. An hour and ten minutes. The two couples near us, and seated AFTER, us ate and left, during that time. My crab cake, beautifully presented, was cold. I didn't eat it, My husband went ahead and ate without me, and his food was hot and also beautifully presented. So, there's that. Our server tried to make it right, but the restaurant was pretty full and busy by that point, and I didn't want to wait any longer. I tipped the server $40 because she did all she could, in my opinion. My husband tipped her $20 additional. She was a delight. When I attempted to discuss our experience with the manager / hostess (?), I suggested that perhaps management should to consider how to avoid such delays for customers; that perhaps everything was not the fault of our server. She turned her back on me, in the middle of my sentence, and said "I'm NOT going to argue with you. " But "I'll be glad to give you a gift card." Really? Who's arguing? I live in NYC but visit the Cape regularly for vacation and to visit family. I've now had 3 meals at the "new Pates" and it has solidified it as my favorite overall restaurant in Chatham in terms of the whole experience: food, service, ambiance, drinks, fair value. In fact, on our last trip, by eating here for the 3rd time as our final dinner of a trip, declared it a new tradition. The other part of the tradition...is to enjoy a Duckhorn merlot with our meal! (Please keep it on the wine list!). Every server we have had at Pates, is genuinely attentive and welcoming as is all of the staff we encounter. The food is well-executed, creative, and the menu is varied enough to satisfy everyone. My last meal There, my husband and I had an outstanding, really flavorful Chilean sea bass with a blueberry pico de gallo, slow cooked short rib special, chopped romaine salad that was shockingly delicious for being very simple (I actually tried to replicate at home but not very successful with the dressing!), and decadent, melt-in-your-mouth warm crab cocktail. This, with a bottle of Duckhorn merlot, a friendly server, and relaxed evening was the perfect end to our trip on the Cape. We can't wait to keep coming back on every trip! read more

Thoroughly enjoyed Pates! Our third time returning since the renovation. The atmosphere is fantastic. Our party of 6 was seated at a high top table in the back area where the bar is- and our waitress(I'm so sorry I forget her name!) was wonderful! She was so funny, easy, attentive, casual and real we would've been happy to have her join us haha Prices are reasonable ! Menu options great ! And food sooo tasty! Some of our favorites: Korean fried Broccoli and melon prosciutto salad as apps were delicious!!!! Also everyone that ordered a starter salad at our table, split their salad between two people , they were that large. Two ordered the Cape Cod Potato Chip crusted COD said it was the best they ever had! And as the name implies the Roast 1/2 chicken was quite large (I couldn't finish it) but was moist and flavorful and with mashed on the side so yummy! The grilled Pork chop perfectly cooked and juicy , as was the Flat iron steak and the Filet Mignon(all that was missing was our favorite Bernaise sauce!) Some of us were eyeing the White Bolognese pasta dish it sounded so yummy but our waitress was steering us away from it as an entree - and kept pushing it as an app to share. We never got to the bottom of that or asked why - but based on all the other good items we ate and enjoyed I don't think you could go wrong ordering it as an entree. 6 people happy and full with starters, salads, entrees and alcohol infused drinks cost $450 including tip- that's unheard of anywhere these days ! We ordered the Pate old fashioned drinks to start they were good but VERY small drink for $18. IPsec were amazed in outer disappointment. This seemed like gouging. We shred the Tuna cones to start. eXCELLENT! Very light, yummy and unique in our experience. Nice bit of spice! We hd the specials for dinner. My husband ordered the scallops $34 and they were excellent. I ordered the flounder Milanese ($30). Dry as a bone and overcooked, though there was plenty of it. Not a drop of lemon or sauce. Very mediocre. Service was excellent. We'd probably come back but expensive and uneven, which is not a great combo. read more

Oh I am so so sad about what has happened to Pates this year (2024). New first time visitors will not feel the impact as long term, year round supporters of this restaurant. First, they lost many of their very fun, friendly, professional staff including their restaurant manager (a great lady!) and Bar manager who was probably one of the most gregarious and talented of all bar tenders on the Cape. It appears they have added a new owner who has somehow managed to convince the original owners to make degrading changes that have really damaged the entire experience of Pates. I am pretty sure this new owner never spent a lot of time in this restaurant in previous years. They significantly reduced their cocktail and food menu. No more food specials - only on Fri/Sat. No more excellent pizzas (GF included!!). And for some very odd reason, no more salmon dishes or the incredible Lobster/shrimp tostada appetizers on regular menu. Seriously a HUGE disappointment to the year round regulars who have supported this establishment for years. Im guessing they are not making as much $$, due to the changes in staff and therefore are forced to reduce their offerings. When asked about more cocktail choices, food choices, etc, the staff repeats the party line, "oh, we hear it is coming back" - but that was 4 months ago and we are ending the summer season with no changes. The bar menu is so paired down that it makes it less FUN to go try a new, unique cocktail and experience that "Cheers" feeling that used to exist no matter what night you visited. The entire ambiance is now just blah. But for visitors to the cape, they would probably not think any of this - and for that I am grateful for the Pates staff - they deserve new patrons who will pay the prices they now charge. And honestly, we are not really price sensitive, but we know when we are getting the value of the prices charged. Now they seem to be losing a lot of their recently hired staff and that makes me think it may be because of the changes and that the staff are just not making as much in tips and/or new management just doesn't treat their staff as they should. This would not surprise me. The changes made including all the above and the increased charges/prices for less food, drink, etc and what I am guessing is probably a big decrease in profits as a result of less of the regulars coming in should be the proof the older owners of this place need to step up and overrule some of the changes that were made. I really hope the PREVIOUS OWNERS STEP UP AND GET BACK TO CENTER. read more

Start with a dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olive and the tuna cones. Seafood pan roast is not just your average seafood pasta. What a lovely (and expensive, I'm sure) renovation the new Pate's owners have executed on. Unfortunately and possibly to pay for the large costs around the renovation the menu no longer offers the great value of the former owner's menu. The prior $40.00 two pound baked stuffed lobster has become $25.00 lobster tacos, and the $40.00 monster slab of rib roast has become a $32.00 medium sized chunk of very tough butt steak (politely referred to as "flat iron steak"). Of the 3 items we ordered (salad wedge, sausage pizza, "flat iron steak") the best by far was the salad wedge of ice cold lettuce, creamy blue cheese, and bacon. The service was however excellent and the drinks large. read more

Went Pates for the first time last evening. Overall pretty nice experience. The Good.... Seated right away at a really nice table in the corner. Ambiance was really cool. We were pretty close to the bar area so maybe a tad loud. Our server greeted us promptly, took drink & appetizer orders. He brought our drinks and we ordered our entrees. Took some time for our food (more on that later) but when it arrived it looked great! All three of us really enjoyed the food!! The not so good...this all comes down to timing. After ordering our entrees, we didn't see our server for quite some time. Our drinks were empty and despite our server being at the couple of tables close by, we were not checked into. More than 30 minutes went by! When our server did stop by but it was to tell us the ticket for our appetizer was lost and did we still want it? (Not to check in on us). After saying we no longer wanted it, we were told the chef said it would be taken off the bill, but we could have it to go and our entrees arrived immediately after. The rest of the meal went fine. The bottom line... really nice atmosphere, really good food!! We'll be back, but this could have been a better experience despite the "missing food and the wait" if our server had checked in on us a time or two. (And would have given another star!!) read more

Nice dinner spot. Tons of parking. Ambience and vibe is great, service was pretty good, food met high expectations. I had a chopped Cesar salad, and my sons had Pate's chowder, all very good. Wine and beer selection worked well, for dinner two of us had the Seafood pan Roast with fettuccine basil black pepper sauce and lots of seafood. Always a great dish at Pate's and my other son has the special which was a bunch of grilled seafood in a superb sauce over rice noddles. We all enjoyed thoroughly, too full for desert. read more

Great food and aesthetics! Went in Winter 2022 and the restaurant was still bustling during the holidays. Ordered the tuna cones which tasted amazing and the halibut risotto. The risotto was a little too salty and lukewarm, but the halibut was amazing! Also had a great selection of desserts and got a chance to try the pear cake which was in season. read more

My wife and I had dinner here last night. This had been one of our favorite places to eat in Chatham. However, something changed over the winter. My wife usually has a caesar salad and a margarita pizza. Even though their website states they have pizza, apparently they have been discontinued. Also, the dressing on they salad was so lemony it was difficult to eat and the anchovies that she was told came with it cost an extra $4! My meal, duck tacos, which I used to love tasted like they dumped a bottle of liquid smoke in the mix. I also had a braised short rib appetizer that was tasteless. I'm afraid since they became popular they are just another restaurant only concerned with fast turnover and high prices. We did tip well as our waitress was very nice and attentive. read more

The new owner of Pate's is doing such a fantastic job that I ate there twice within one week. Each time I ordered something different as did everyone in my party and everything was fantastic. While the old Pate's had a great run and has a special place in many locals' hearts, the new owner is doing a wonderful job transitioning into a more modern menu and atmosphere while still maintaining the tradition of a killer steak! Both waitresses I had were attentive, friendly, and helpful. Covid protocol is being followed and they even implemented some innovative ideas like little bags on the tables to store masks. Just what Chatham needs and I will absolutely be back. Don't miss the small plate tacos! read more

The waiter dropped a full bowl of clam chowder on my father in laws lap and the manger wouldn't even comp the chowder or offer desert. Its not the employees who dont care its the management. With that bad of management, you have to wonder what else in the establishment is being mis managed, e.g. the kitchen. I am so loathe to give a bad review during COVID, especially because the staff here were ANGELIC, but if you like seasoned food or don't plan on only eating seafood, please eat somewhere else. The food and drinks were just straight up bad, with the vegetarian food taking the cake for truly some of the most mediocre i've had. We reserved two tables for four each, placed nearby, for 8pm. By 8:40, we were told that they had a table for 6 and for 2, or another twenty minute wait for two tables of four. Around 8:50 we got seated at two four person tables far from each other but whatever, we were hungry by this point. Waitstaff were so sweet the whole time though. Bread you get served for free: How do you mess this up?? HOW? It's potato rolls, toasted and salted, with white bean dip and sesame oil (??). The dip was bad. Please don't purée white beans and not season it and then serve it with potato rolls. What. Drinks: Mojito seemed to have no sugar and the mint wasn't even muddled into it! Even after muddling it myself with the end of my knife, it wasn't good. Sent it back (which I hate hate doing and felt horrible because they were so kind). Mule was missing the ginger beer flavor. Food: Burrata salad was average, you can't really mess that up. Portabello mushroom dish was meh, again missing really any seasoning that set it apart from something a twelve year old could cook. Shrimp dish, why are there white beans in everything? It doesn't go. Overall, an abject lack of seasoning beyond salt and pepper (if that). I really would not recommend any of the food here if you usually cook with more seasoning than just salt/pepper. Drinks weren't good. Go somewhere else, really. Disappointed doesn't even start to express it. Prime rib was undercooked, very fatty, and tasteless. The horseradish sauce tasted like mayo with a faint Taste of horseradish. So if you like mayo you'll like that. Mashed potatoes were also tasteless -tasted like the box kind. Beet hummus was very good. I think they used the seasoning from the other part other meal to over season in the crackers that came with the hummus. read more

My husband had the scallops and the sauce was out of this world! I highly recommend the snowball dessert and the best espresso martini I've ever had to wash it down. My daughter accidentally spilled my full espresso martini and the staff was kind enough to bring me a new one at no charge. Even the kids chicken fingers and fries were delicious! This restaurant is probably the worst in Massachusetts. They found a way to RUIN shrimp scampi. The first plate of it they brought out the shrimp was like tough rubber, the second plate out they brought out had BURNT shrimp that made everything on the plate taste burnt!
