Very disappointing experience. I made an early reservation (5:30) as we had theater tickets around the corner at 7:30. We ordered an appetizer and drinks when we were seated while we considered the rest of the menu. We waited nearly an hour for our appetizer, which was three coconut shrimp for $9. After the first 40 minutes, we informed our server of our theater plans, and she berated us for not having ordered entrees as soon as we sat down. Two hours should have been more than enough time to get a simple dinner. Our entrees never came, and we eventually asked our server for the check, as we had to leave for the show. The first bill overcharged us for a drink we had not ordered. No apology, just excuses and blaming the customer. Went home hungry. Will not return. read more

In strong contention for one of my favorite places in the city, and surely my favorite in the neighborhood. Everything about this place is fantastic. It's a beautiful space - clean and bright and lovely. Elegant, but still charming. And that's not even hitting the outdoor patio, which will be for another time... The music selection was super on point, and the overall volume of everything meant that I could keep conversation easily without having to shout. The food was marvelous - I ordered the duck curry, and tried a bit of the ginger chicken clay pot. I already have two more trips planned just because it would have been (probably) a terrible idea to order two more entrees for myself. And besides, I needed to save room for desert. The incredibly sweet owner came out to our car multiple times providing water,& other sweet gestures. yet most excitingly He presented us with a Lychee & a Rhombutan each, only to be further surprised when we discovered they had packed 2 Finely wrapped containers with our order as well!! It was an incredible sweet & thoughtful gesture that we could really delight & enjoy these rare & tropical fruits! Great atmosphere and great food. My wife and I had dinner prior to a show at nearby theater. We were seated in the outdoor garden area on a very pleasant weather evening. We had a couple of mojitos ( mango and regular) The dumplings were served hot and very flavorful. On top of excellent service, Pasteur's food and drink creations are uniquely Vietnamese--that is to say, their Vietnamese is unlike other Vietnamese.. First, their pho is not traditional--but its excellent. Opting for a super-deep, dark, and heavy beef broth, it's saltier and much stronger than others. Second, they offer bánh xèo, which is rare in Chicago. Give it a whirl: wrap the bánh xèo in the provided lettuce wraps, and dip. Its much less greasier than competitor-versions. Third, they have Vietnamese-influenced custom shots; such as one served with a real lychee fruit. All around, this family-owned restaurant delivers a unique, and dare I say slightly healthier versions of very traditional Vietnamese meals, served with excellent service and atmosphere. read more

The Claypot Tofu and Vegetables is worth the trip, regardless of where you live. It was brimming with flavor, color, and deliciousness. The vegetables and tofu were cooked to perfection and the sauce was light, yet packed with tastiness. The other vegetarian options on the Groupon tasting menu didn't wow me but the bread pudding dessert was phenomenal. I loved the atmosphere and we had a very nice, helpful server. What a disappointment! Went there for Valentines Day. Waited 10 mins to get seated - they were not that busy. Did not get water, no one came to ask about drinks. Then we heard people talking all around us - they have been waiting for 90 minutes to get their food, others had been there 30 mins without their starters, etc. the couple next to us said "just pack up our order, we will take it home". Another couple said "when we saw you sit down, we were going to warn you". Just one table around us had food at their table. The restaurant was cold so they had a space heater out, which was doing nothing. My wife wrapped her shawl around her to stay warm. After 15 mins of waiting and having to ask for water, we left. No one asked why we were leaving. Don't go here. I definitely will not. read more

PASTEUR IS BACK! *shivering with ecstacy* Same great food, same great menu - with great prices. New chic, elegant environs. LOVE the new minimal, shiny decor. And due to open - a gorgeous back patio area. They got rid of the old, beaten down rattan furniture in the front bar area. Spring rolls are still great. Had the Curry Beef. SPICY goodness! And plenty for two meals. Dessert: 4 of us dug into Mango Mousse and Fried Bananas. I'm not a dessert person even, but these were great. The mousse was light and delicious and not too sweet. Fried bananas were crispy outside, and yumm. So glad to see this restaurant open again. The neighborhood chi is back in line. read more

A group of three of us shared a New Year's Eve dining experience here. Right around the corner from my close friend's condo, we took the short walk to this special Vietnamese restaurant. For such an unassuming exterior, we found ourselves among an interesting mixture of casual to very well dressed patrons. A large bouquet of fresh flowers adorned the hostess stand which featured the heady, musky aromas of asiatic lilies- a favorite of mine. As I understand, the place has recently reopened after a complete interior overhaul. I'm happy to announce that the result are comfortable and just upscale enough to make your experience special. The larger dining room on the left features high ceilings and French Vietnamese touches which certainly whisked me away from the bitter cold Chicago weather. Tables were adorned with tasteful fresh flower mini arrangements. We started off by ordering cocktails. I had a surprisingly potent and delicious triple rye punch, certainly a winner if you're a whiskey aficionado. Between us three, we shared two appetizers and a salad, perfect for tasting portions. The poached shrimp spring rolls were a hit, as were the crispy vegetable dumplings. The green papaya salad with shrimp was equally good. For entrees, two had the duck breast with a tamarind glaze and minced vegetables. They adored the way it was prepared and generally didn't want to share. I loved my curried monkfish entree, mixed with mushrooms, peppers both sweet and hot, and other vegetables. Honestly, I'd guess that this $22 entree would be big enough to share. Service was professional and smart. It didn't matter that our appetizers came out before our drinks, since our waiter explained that the bartender was a bit backed up this holiday evening. We were two bottles of champagne to the wind before we entered the place. With the additional cocktail at dinner, I was more than a bit saucy, suggestive, and downright scandalous to the waiter. He rolled with my punches like a pro, so I give him an A+. The gorgeous, renovated bathroom was unfortunately dysfunctional. The temperature was frigid and the water at the sink didn't work. I wasn't too impressed with the dessert menu, so we skipped this course. No matter, I'm going back. The food is very tasty, the value is very good, the service is smart, and the atmosphere is upscale. read more

We came here as a group of about 28 for a dinner event. It was during a big snow storm so the restaurant was pretty much empty to just us. It was nice! The restaurant has great ambiance, colors and beautiful decor. I felt fancy just sitting in this restaurant! Now onto the food. Here was our tasting menu: Plated selection of small appetizers Spring Roll, Egg Roll, Dumpling Goi Vu Du Tom (Shrimp Papaya Salad) Shredded green papaya topped with poached shrimp, fresh herbs, sprinkled with brown roasted peanuts. Pho Bo (Beef Soup) Ha Noi beef noodle soup, with eye of round beef and brisket, served with bean sprouts and fresh herbs. Ca Salmon Kho (Claypot Salmon) Salmon baked in a claypot, with fresh sugar cane, tomatoes, and scallions Bo Xao Lan (Curry Beef) Tender beef marinated and sautéed in a light coconut curry sauce, with woodear mushroom, angel hair noodles, baby okra. Topped with ground peanuts and fresh kaffir lime leaf. Fried Banana with Green Tea Ice Cream Overall the food was good. The spring roll, egg roll and dumpling were similar to other restaurants I've eaten. The papaya salad lacked flavor unfortunately. It was pretty bland to me. The pho bo was good but the broth was a little too salty for my taste. The salmon and curry beef dishes were good. I thoroughly enjoyed them both. The dessert of fried banana and green tea ice cream were also delicious. Service was outstanding. But then again, we were a large paying group and the only customers there so I'm not quite sure if its usually this way. But for us, service was awesome! The restaurant is supposed to have Vietnamese French cuisine. I was not able to figure out how the food was french. Overall the food was good and I would recommend coming here at least once to try. P.S. Their bathroom doors do not lock. If you lock the door, and someone jiggles the handle trying to enter the bathroom (because they dont know you are in there), the lock automatically pops out to unlock itself! My wife and I visited Pasteur on February 15 of this year to use an expiring Groupon. Shame on me for hanging on to this review for so long. The food was excellent (more on that momentarily), but what I most vividly remember were the ambiance and the service. Our waiter Morgan was absolutely perfect; he struck all the right balances and made us feel special. Equally impressive was the elegant, gorgeous room. With those two powerful factors at work and the beautiful woman across the table, they could have put a plate of dirty gravel in front of me and I would have been happy. Thankfully, Pasteur does not serve rocks. They do serve simple but satisfying pork dumplings and a pleasing curry shrimp soup. Perhaps one might follow those with a deeply flavorful shrimp sa-te entree, with a caramelized glaze of baked dried red peppers, onions, and garlic. And to finish, a lovely banana bread pudding. Based only on aesthetics, Pasteur seems like a warm-weather restaurant. I bet that they serve some killer summer cocktails. Now that summer is actually here, I am ready to return. But for the record, it was wonderful even in the depths of our woeful winter. read more

I had an incredible experience as I entered the restaurant; I was immediately pulled in by its unique ambiance and culture. When I had first heard of this location from a friend, I had expectations of 'Oh, it's another Vietnamese restaurant.' Much to my surprise, I was greeted by a wonderful staff and atmosphere. I cannot stress enough how 'magical' it was to dine in a classy, yet affordable and casual environment. I was there with a date and friends and I had a classic bowl of Pho while my date had the tamarind sour soup (Canh Chua Tom) and both were exceptional. I highly recommend trying one or both of those menu items! We also shared a platter of dumplings that really left me curious on what other appetisers I need to sample, it was that good! The bartender working that night (Nick) was great to chat with here and there and made some stellar drinks. He was very kind and easy to talk to, helping us with some menu recommendations. I definitely recommend anyone to visit the bar as it's fully stocked! When I visit Chicago again, I'll definitely be visiting Pasteur again. Legend has it that writing a Yelp review of a summer dining experience in winter induces an early onset of warm weather. Not one to doubt Yelp folklore, I hereby submit to you the pleasures of dining at Pasteur. Long time Chicago diners such as myself no doubt looked upon the reopening of Pasteur with enthusiasm, and it did not disappoint. The ethereal colonial aspects of the main dining room were retained with the reopening, while the over carpeted aspects of the bar were jettisoned, so now the entire restaurant is at once charmingly third world imperial and cleanly modern - your pith helmet and handlebar mustache will not be out of place, whether you don them sincerely or with a dollop of irony. It is a clean, well-lit place, overflowing with earthly delights. In the summer, the front windows open to the street, letting in the sounds and aroma of traffic, enhancing the feeling that you too are in a Graham Greene novel of colonial intrigue. Dining in your best seersucker suit is highly recommended. But let us discuss matters of substance, shall we? For we are re-opening French Vietnamese relations; hopefully to a more peaceful and delicious end. Our negotiations begin with a cocktail, one of multicultural beauty which will no doubt receive bally-hoos from my noble bourbon boozers - The Chew. It is a Manhattan leavened with Allspice and heightened with "Vietnamese beef jerky". It is divine, my friends, simply divine. The Allspice adds an ethereal, cloven quality to the usual American cocktail that goes down quite smooth, and adds an airy balance to the weight of the bourbon. One could easily drink three of four of these over a summer evening of intense discussion of international matters. And given that the drink comes with a very tasty cut of beef jerky, a dedicated boozer could sustain him (or her) self for the entire evening on booze alone. But why should you? For the food here is delicious. While still infusing elements of French and Vietnamese cuisine, over time the balance of power has definitely shifted to the Vietnam, but this is not to be lamented. The menu items are all of tremendous value and have an admirable depth of flavor. The dumplings and spring rolls are delicious and airy, and the pineapple calamari is worth repeat visits. The calamari is perfectly cooked, not at all chewy, and the presentation is delicious as well as visually sumptuous. Furthermore, all the dishes are very reasonably priced, making the new Pasteur a viable weekly dining destination. Oh that I lived in the neighborhood! For my own part, I am overdue to return to try the duck breast, though I may order the calamari again, as it is that good. Do yourself and the neighborhood a favor, and eat here often, so that we may not need to suffer through another Pasteur closing in the future. read more

I was here for a business dinner tonight. I found everything to be wonderful, from the staff, to the atmosphere, and most importantly...the food! They started by offering tofu and shrimp spring rolls which were delightfully light. Next came an assortment of salads, including a mango salad and a chicken salad; each of which had a vibrant flavor. Next came my selection of the signature beef which was tender, tasty and perfectly seasoned. Finally was dessert, I had the mango mousse cake...amazingly delicious! Oh, and the cocktails and wine list are exceptional as well!! :) I definitely plan to dine here again and explore the many delightful flavors offered on the menu. My review for Pasteur is long overdue since I've posted the pictures about a month ago. This isn't the Pasteur of years past, it's reincarnated to be more attainable. The decor is much lighter, airier. Intimate but not stuffy. The menu has paired down with more seasonal dishes. And if you want to really have a good taste of what Pasteur is about, I recommend coming with a group and ordering family style. The Mussels were done in a french style cream sauce and they really give you a healthy portion. The Shrimp Papaya Salad was fresh and simple. The Red Snapper came out crispy but light and tender with a kick from the chili sauce. The Signature Beef is always a favorite. The Crispy Noodles and Fried Rice was more just fillers but the Shrimp Curry was a dish I wanted to keep for myself. The service was attentive but not overbearing. I would recommend Pasteur as a perfect place for a romantic date or intimate gathering. I can't wait to visit again! read more

I had dinner at Pasteur with two of my friends last night. Although the food was decent and the ambiance of the restaurant is great, I was ultimately underwhelmed by lackluster service all around. Pasteur is located on Broadway in the Edgewater neighborhood. There's not much else on that little stretch of road, so if you blink you might miss it. The interior is fabulous: very white, very modern, with little Vietnamese touches, like the wicker dining chairs. We sat at the bar for a while before dinner. I sampled multiple cocktails, including the Ginger Pear martini (excellent), the Cucumber martini (good but super cucumbery), the Rose Sangria (refreshing but has that flowery drink some cocktails have that I don't like), and the Pomegranate Margarita (YUM!). (For the record, I didn't consume all of those myself, but I have no shame in stealing sips of my friends' drinks.) We also split a bottle of red wine later, which was excellent. The bartender wasn't super attentive, but that was nothing compared to our waiter. Despite the fact that the restaurant wasn't super busy, it took almost half an hour for him to take our order. For appetizers, we ordered both the chicken and vegetable egg rolls, and we mentioned to the waiter that one person is a vegetarian. When the egg rolls arrived half an hour later, the waiter only brought over the chicken egg rolls...the veggie egg rolls didn't show up for almost another half an hour, and the waiter brought us the wrong egg roll quantity to boot. My poor vegetarian friend was sitting there starving for what seemed like forever. The egg rolls were pretty good, at least. We also ordered some tempura, which was good but nothing spectacular. The entrees were the best part of the meal, by far. I chose the Bo Luc Lac, which was out if this world. One of my friends got the Pineapple Calamari, which she loved and was served in an actual pineapple, which is awesome. My other friend got one of the chicken curry dishes, which she enjoyed. We all shared the fried banana and green tea ice cream dessert, along with the flourless chocolate cake dessert. Both of them were good, but nothing special. Overall, the food was decent and I was pleased with the value we got for our money. Entree pricing is especially affordable, and the entrees were outstanding. But the service was just so poor all around. Everyone was very nice, but that doesn't make up for poor service like this. I won't be rushing to come back here anytime soon. read more

I love this place! Location is great (literally 2 minutes from the Bryn Mawr red line stop), parking is easy (either on Broadway in front of the restaurant, or any of the surrounding streets; we've never had an issue with finding parking when we do drive here), and the atmosphere is great; beautiful interior and one of the most beautiful patios I've ever sat out on! The waitstaff is also so lively and friendly and a pleasure to talk to. They also offer some excellent suggestions for food. Of course the food is the best thing about this place. The food here is excellent, so excellent that we've been back several times! I've tried several dishes but I think you should really get the clay pot salmon (I could eat this every day, easily) or the bo luc lac! The salmon was moist and cooked perfectly and the flavoring of the bo luc lac was better than any other I've tried! I'm also a sucker for bread pudding as a dessert and the one they serve here is great (nice and warm with vanilla ice cream)! Aside from the excellent food, the drinks are excellent as well. The bartender (Nick) was so fun and made us excellent drinks! Ask him for recommendations, or heck, just trust the bartender and let him do his thing! Any drink leaving the bar here will be awesome! For the ambiance of this place and quality of the food, I think the prices are more than reasonable. Pasteur is a landmark. We first went many years ago when it was at a different location. We just had a very nice dinner in their back garden area. It is very spacious with wonderful trees and wall fire places. Luis the waiter was very attentive. While the menu is small the spring rolls and dumplings were good and the main dishes were good. I absolutely love this place! First walked in, I was amazed about the decor and the whole unique atmosphere of the restaurant. The seating was very spacious. I came here with a date and love trying new Vietnamese food. This place is much different, because it has a classy and casual setting compared to other plain Vietnamese restaurants. The service was excellent where they were swift and friendly. I had the roasted duck, and I must say that the tamarind sauce complements the duck very well. Most importantly, the duck wasn't dry! I also had their Pho and my date had their Vietnamese Sour Soup, which I highly recommend. Overall, it was a great experience, and if I need Vietnamese food in Chicago, this is the first place where I will go! Food was amazing. I got the Tom Xao Sa-Te. It was phenomenal. Why only three stars? Now I've only dined in here once, but the service was terrible. More specifically, it took forever. We went on a Friday, and the restaurant wasn't terribly full. However, we were a group of 6 people. We were planning on going to a show later, but gave ourselves *plenty* of time. However, the food took about an hour and a half to come after we ordered. The server was rarely around, so it was even hard to flag her down and let her know about this. In fact I even asked my friends to get my food to go and I ended up leaving the restaurant early to hold our seats at the show as it was open seating. But like I said, the food was great, even to go. I'm definitely going to go back and I'll update my review if the service isn't so bad. read more

Was disappointed based on recent reviews. The ambience and decor are stunning - very beautiful and romantic. I started out by trying their Dirty Girl martini because I was feeling a little randy after reading a bit of 50 Shades of Grey earlier. :-) The drink was $10 and it was very yummy. Pretty much perfect, actually. We started out sharing average chicken dumplings. Nothing special. And moved on to our entrees. Both of us ordered clay pot fish (me: salmon; BF: catfish). The catfish had a LOT of bones to contend with - although this was totally explained by our server ahead of time. It does NOT make for a romantic dinner when your date is rolling stuff around in his mouth and digging out bits every forkful. The salmon was overcooked - a bit dry. It is prepared with tomato, onion and sugar cane sticks for sweetness. It was too sweet and really took over the whole dish. The catfish seemed to be the exact same preparation with the same ingredients minus the sugar cane. Service was excellent. I would give this place another shot ordering differently. read more

I *must* eat gluten free and found the selection to be wide enough to not be relegated to my standard ( read safe) steak n' potatoes or salad. I had the salmon in a passionfruit reduction sauce and absolutely refused to let my dining partner try some. It was that good. Regretfully there wasn't really much on the dessert menu that I could eat. I would love it if they could create a ( normally gluten free ) ginger / lemongrass creme brulee. I'd definitely stay for that. Outdoor seating did not match the indoor ambiance. I would have expected white table cloths for balance and refinement. ( i.e to match the inside ) Wait staff was great. YUM! This review is a little late- I was there with a friend a couple of months ago when outdoor dining was still possible. Pasteur has one of the best outdoor seating areas on the north side. Large, not on the street, but in the back. The host brought us to our table, and the waiter was just the right amount of attentive. Sadly, I don't recall what either of us ate. I have eaten here twice now and the first experience had me bragging to come back. I was happy to have returned and enjoyed everything including a beautiful Chicago patio with great authentic dishes until....RAT PROBLEM! My favorite restaurant for Vietnamese food in Chicago! They have a variety of options on the menu and their servers are very knowledgeable. I love the butterflied shrimp tempura and my favorite dishes include any of the clay pots, the pho, and the bo luc lac. The banana bread pudding dessert is a MUST! I also recommend trying their cocktails - my favorite is the mango mojito. The bartender is also flexible and can make pretty much any drink that isn't listed on the menu, or make suggestions. My aunt chose this place for her birthday dinner since she used to frequent the old location. We had a reservation for a group of seven on a Saturday night and were promptly seated. We started off with a round of drinks (wine for everyone and a Pisco Sour for me...yum!) and appetizers. We had the spring rolls, saigon crepe and vegetable tempura. Everything was tasty and the sauces were so good. We decided to order a few entrees to share. We had: -Bouillabaisse: this had seafood and escargot, but I did not see any of the latter. It was delicious though. I could eat a whole bowl myself! It comes with noodles on the side which makes it more filling. -Tofu w/veggies: I don't know who ordered this since none of us are vegetarians, but it was okay. I'm not a huge tofu fan -Curry shrimp: yum! this wasn't too spicy and had a nice flavor, especially with the coconut in the curry -Signature beef: this was perfectly tender and whatever they marinated it in was so good! It came on a bed of mixed greens with chunks of fresh tomato. I would definitely order this on my next visit -Bacon wrapped pork tenderloin: pork wrapped in pork. enough said! We enjoyed a delicious dinner with a large party on a Sunday evening. The sugarcane shrimp is not left on the sugar cane but is rolled up into a rice paper withb lettuce so the flavor is a bit too diluted for my taste. The lemongrass beef roll has the same design but because of the stronger flavor of the meat and seasoning it works better in this type of of roll. Salmon egg rolls were a little too fishy but had a crisp exterior and the dipping sauce was the right balance of sweet and spicy. The beef curry was outstanding with a surprise addition of okra. The Cochinchin (noodles sauteed with seafood) was very good with little bit of cripness on the fat rice noodles. Spicy calamari appetizer was probably the best of the dishes with sweet and crunchy calamari (but not battered) with a light salad on the side. Ginger chicken clay pot tasted very much like a Thai dish - light and flavorful. The beef short ribs were probably the most disappointing with a lot of connective tissue surrounding the small bones made it difficult to eat. A clay pot of shrimp with eggplant was okay nothing spectacular and a clay pot of salmon tasted quite fishy. Of the 3 desserts that we tried a flourless chocolate cake was amazing and tasted like chocolate truffles, warm bread pudding with ice cream was as you would expect, dense with chewy raisins and good eggs flavor, and the mango mousse cake was so light that it almost did not have enough flavor. Fantastic evening for my birthday! The egg rolls were fresh, crispy and served with lettuce & fish sauce like they are supposed to be served. The brisket pho, curry duck & the salmon with passion fruit were all perfect! Sadly, they were out of the bread pudding but the fried bananas made a great substitute. We decided to have dinner before the play at Jackalope Theatre at the Broadway Armory. And we have enjoyed Pasteur a few times in the past. When we found the Pasteur Groupon, we bought it and made reservations on OpenTable. I wrote a note on OpenTable that we had a groupon. Unfortunately, when we arrived, they apologetically told us that they don't honor Groupon On Saturdays because it gets REALLY busy. Groupon has screwed up and not put that on the Groupon The owner and the whole staff felt bad about it and wanted us to stay and we were really hungry. So, we stayed and it was early (5:30pm) so we got great attention. The owner, the hostess, the wait staff all stopped to ensure we liked everything. I had the BEST TIto's martini with a lemon twist. And you know, you CAN screw up a martini. This one was perfect temp and the lemon twist was big enough and oily enough to create a delightfully smooth and tasty martini. With the groupon, you get to choose 4 courses but you are limited. Without a groupon, you get exactly what you want and what we wanted weren't on the 4 courses you can choose from. I was SO happy to order the Curry Duck and Craig got to order catfish. The owner found out we were attending theatre so he let the wait staff know and they kept things going smoothly. We really enjoyed getting there early enough to spend a relaxing time at dinner and still make it by 7:30 (BTW, we also walked to the theatre and it was so great to get exercise after dinner). We also enjoyed Spring Rolls with the steak and lemongrass. OH MY GOSH! These were so good. The steak was totally tender to the point that the crunchiness of the veggies were more noticeable than the steak texture! The tastes were perfect. The best Curry Duck I've ever had is in Paris France. Paris can do ANY ethnic dish the best because they are Royal when it comes to sauces. The dish I had at Pasteur certainly rivals what I had in Paris! SOOO delicious!! We were so happy to have exactly what we wanted and not use the Groupon! In fact, the pricing at Pasteur is SO reasonable, you should just go without the Groupon. We felt so taken care of and thank the owner and the staff for such wonderful treatment.
