Pica Pau - Garlic shrimp to die for

I stumbled upon…read morePica Pau while meandering back to my hotel after realizing that the restaurant I was originally planning to eat lunch at was closed on Thursdays. It was getting a wee bit late for lunch (~1:30 PM), and I was quite hungry, so when I passed by Pica Pau and saw how packed it was, I knew I had to drop by to give it a try. It's absolutely bustling inside; there are several tables inside and outside, and you can generally just seat yourself as long as there's an open slot. There are very few tourists here -- another great sign -- so the menus will all be in Portuguese, and it will be hit or miss as to whether your server can translate for you. However, the menu is pretty simple, so it's easy enough to intuit what they say (or to just use Google Translate) -- the menu is spread across three blackboards, one for daily specials, another for seafood, and the last for other meat dishes. Everything is just twelve euros for lunch, and it also comes with a drink and bread. You genuinely can't go wrong with anything on their menu. My mom and I both ordered from their seafood menu, and the fish is super fresh and grilled to perfection. It has a perfect char on the outside, and is super flaky and tender on the inside; they add a hit of salt and a side of lemon, but the fish honestly doesn't need much else. The fish also comes with a side of boiled veggies and potatoes, which are a great, neutral accompaniment to the fish. I ordered the swordfish, and my mom got the sea bass, but we ended up splitting both of the dishes between us (especially since they both conveniently came with two pieces). Both were phenomenal, but I did enjoy the swordfish a tiny bit more; it was a bit more tender, and they also descaled the swordfish but did not for the seabass, so it was a slightly easier eating experience.

We made midday (2pm) reservations a month in advance. Upon arrival, aside from the red Micheline plaque, you would never guess this was a such a heralded gem. The entry door is so narrow I had to scoot sideways (and I'm slim!). The inside is very simple - plain wood tables and chairs laid out in a narrow quaint L shape. The owner and the host both greeted us and we each promptly opted for their reasonably priced 7-course 54 Euro tasting menu. The restaurant is famous for buying a whole pig, typically on Thursdays, and then utilizing every single part in some inventive way for its weeklong tasting menu. And, has the #nosetotail moniker for bragging rights. I posted photos of each course (double servings pictured for the two of us) along with that day's menu. Our favs were the Croquetes and the Bifana Porcalhona as well as the Almôndegas de Pézinhos! She also loved the liver. Service was impeccable as the host brought each course at a perfectly casual pace (as we finished the previous) and provided careful details and answered further questions about each offering. Nearly 2 hours later we were done... and all the wiser for what could be created from any part of this animal.

I greatly appreciated the owner's passion too, going so far as to basically force me to order a non-standard cut of pork to encourage the mission and then making a special lactose-free version to accomodate my increasingly upsetting dairy sensitivity. This significantly improved my experience as the tongue was expertly cooked and they had the opportunity to show that off. (Bread and Butter: A) - This is one of those rare moments where I was actually excited about the cover since their butter is a pork- based butter without any actual butter and more likely some component of fat and marrow which added an intriguing decadence and uniqueness to the bread. The pickled carrots offered a pleasant refreshingness to open the palette as well. (Chorizo Pancake: A) - Soft and tender pancake with great elements of expertise keeping the hearty intensity of the chorizo while lightening it up with herbs, pickled onion, mayo, and a fluffy egg base. (Pig Tongue: A) - Super impressed with this dish from the soft pig tongue to the impressively tender pickled cauliflower that added a vbeautifully refreshing acidity. The diced potatoes added texture and heartiness, and I appreciated that this was thoughfully restrained. We were disappointed at the time but we found many other restaurants that had good seafood as well. We were traveling with other family members this time and thought this restaurant would be the best places to try pretty much every seafood dishes available in Lisbon and some of the unique foods that we can't get at home. We had barnacles, glass shrimp (it is supposed to have eggs outside the shell but unfortunately we were told the season was over so there were no eggs), spider crab, oysters with caviar, scallops, razor clams, and cheese with bread. My daughter's boyfriend tasted the barnacles for the first time and he loved it. We ended up ordering it twice. Everything was delicious. Everyone enjoyed the food. Excellent service.

First of all, the waitstaff were fighting amongst themselves which was very unsettling. Table that ish till after work or take it out to the parking lot away from the patrons! Second of all, the food was very hit or miss. We ordered the garlic shrimp, clams, and scallops to start. Our favorite of the three were the garlic shrimp. We then decided to add the spicy garlic shrimp special which we did not know meant to be prawns. I thought it would be literally a spicy version of the shrimp we just ate. The shrimp special (Al ajillo especial) was just not worth it to us. The meat was very tough and chewy for 30 euros. The waitress told us it was supposed to be tough and chewy which I just don't believe. We liked the gambas al ajillo infinitely more! Unfortunately we didn't want to splurge here but I wish that we had the special crab and the ruby red shrimp. I feel like next time in Lisbon I would come back to try more dishes.

It has fun menus for the kids and interesting dishes to try for the adults. The space is decorated to mimic the American diner style of the 50s, with ambient music and staff equipment to match. It has two floors and is quite spacious. The menu has a very cute and funny design, with one-liners that adapt very well to the style. The food quality has been improving, in my humble opinion, over the years. The hamburgers in particular are very good! The starters are quite interesting and the hot dogs are ok (and cheap, but not their best, though). The desserts are tasty, but I usually only get to try them if I go there for a snack, since it's basically impossible for me not to be full when it comes time for dessert at lunch. These are expensive, but adequate for the quality and quantity presented. Their homemade drinks are expensive, too, but specialty cokes and Dr. Pepper are relatively affordable and interesting to try. I recommend the vanilla one! In conclusion; I recommend this restaurant for all kinds of occasions. The prices are very affordable (it is easy to spend below €30 for a lunch with two adults, for example), the atmosphere is fun and relaxed and the staff is generally very helpful and competent.
