We decided to pick up pastries and not wait for a table. The chocolate treat was absolutely a 10/10 and the pastel de nada was almost as good as the founding pastel de nada place. Really a 9/10! I could not find more of those delicious chocolate treats at any other bakery in Portugal.

It was made with cheap vegetable oil and had artificial flavouring in it. If you are expecting to be wowed you'll be quite disappointed. I really wouldn't take another for free. We also got what turned out to be a lousy coffee. We were herded into the take - out part by our guide but as I looked in the window, for customers sitting in, there was a proper coffee machine. For some strange reason the travel guides push tourists into this place by the hundred to buy saying it's old, legendary. It might be old. It might have been good once but today it's all spin. I can't speak to any other pie or pastry here but this one is billed as their famous creation then it is reasonable to believe that it's all vegetable oil, white sugar and artificial flavouring all the way. We were in Vigo Spain in a little bakery a few months ago and their sweet treats were stunningly good but this place is lousy.

No exaggeration, but the Swordfish was the best we had ever tasted! Our server skillfully separated for fillets from the bones skillfully. Rhe Swordfish was buttery and melted in your mouth. The Paella was naturally messy, but top notched, flavorful and a large portion. We are planning to return to try more of the restaurant's offerings.

When we went for lunch the day before we did not know that this café was also the breakfast part of our bed and breakfast. We stayed at a bed-and-breakfast the next street over and both mornings a continental breakfast at this café was included. This is one of the best breakfasts I have ever had as part of the bed-and-breakfast. We were each served a portion of fresh fruit (which changed by the day), a boiled egg, a couple slices of ham and cheese, a pastel de nata, a basket of crossiants and rolls to share, and whatever you would like to drink. I had fresh squeezed orange juice, and a latte both days. Thankfully, like most places in Portugal they offer dairy alternatives. I honestly still dream about this breakfast. The wait staff on all of our trips were so friendly and helpful. It is really a beautiful set up and they have many things that you can purchase as well. One of my sub-goals of that trip was trying basically as many pastel de nata as I possibly could, so seeing a place on our way up to the castle by foot (just after the free elevator), obviously I had to stop and try theirs. By this point I'd tried a whole bunch already, so I can say, out of all of them, the *crust* was really good, possibly among the best I'd had. Perfectly flaky, crispy, flavorful crust, inside of which was totally disappointing filling, a filling that was mostly sugary rather than eggy, and was quite drippy once you start eating it. I can't speak to any of their other pastries, though, we were just here to taste-test all the pastel de nata we could find. :D (If I were back in the area, I'd totally come back to try some of their other, more interesting things.)

So here's the interesting thing - this was one of *many* places to get pastel de nata that made to…read moremultiple lists of places you had to stop, which meant I obviously had to stop at as many of them as possible over the course of the couple weeks I was in Portugal, a couple months ago, in both Porto and Lisbon (also to a lesser extent, Coimbra). This means I can now say who made them best, and more importantly, why. The interesting thing is, I didn't think the pastel de nata here were particularly great, on any dimension - fairly flimsy, doughy crust, with a pudding-like, drippy filling that was too sweet and not quite eggy enough. Don't get me wrong, I'd still eat them any time someone offered, they were still tasty, you just have a ton of options nearby, some of them notably better than the ones here. I also tried one of their fancy-looking cookies, which definitely looked fancier than it tasted. Was just a cookie. Dessert-wise I was unimpressed. They were also always fairly busy, which made ordering feel a bit rushed. So why am I still giving this bakery 5 stars, and why did I come back here a couple more times, including to get food to-go the morning we left, to get food to take on the plane with us? For exactly one reason, and it's a weird one: oddly enough, the samosas here are the best samosas I've ever had, and by a wide margin. You'd think the best samosas ever would come from an Indian restaurant or bakery, but nope, they're here. The other small savory food items we tried were also pretty good, but the samosas are the juiciest, meatiest, most perfectly bursting with spices samosas I've had. Who knew? They also had pretty solid espresso and pretty solid free-squeezed orange juice, but those aren't hard to find in Portugal (I miss seeing inexpensive fresh squeezed OJ all over the city... especially *truly* fresh squeezed, to order, from whole oranges. Portuguese OJ definitely was the best. Though obviously not *better* than other places you can get the same thing around - probably indeed the same oranges. Definitely better than anywhere you can get fresh OJ for a few bucks in the US, though, if you can find such a place. :p)

The egg tart is a specialty, and I liked that it wasn't super sweet. The travesseiros are ok, but that's a me thing (not a pastry thing). They speak some English there, and it was easy enough to point and order if we got stuck. It's also quite affordable. All our pastries and coffees were about 20 Euro. It's a small interior with outdoor seating if the weather is cooperating, and service was decent enough with so many people in line. It's one of those Sintra bucket list places you have to visit just to say you went, but it's also a pretty good stop to have on your itinerary.

This is the second location of the popular Piriquita. It's a little less busy than the OG and close…read moreby. It offered both sit in and takeaway. I got takeaway pastries from here. The staff was friendly, helpful to my English speaking self and offered many great suggestions! There is a credit card minimum- which allowed me to sample several pastries, all of which were amazing. Highly recommend both Piriquita locations!
