Shredded Beef Empanada: I had the mini ones that were good but WAY too little beef in each. I get that they're mini, but the amount of beef was so small it really just fit into half. Ground Beef Empanada: they were decent. I've never had empanadas cooked in a Venezuelan restaurant, so I'm not sure if the flavor was personal style or particular to Venezuelans. Didn't even need the additional orange sauce that came with. Barbarque fried empanada: it comes out HOT!! No question these are cooked to order. Not overly spicy, but good backyard barbecue flavor. Don't think 'sauce' as there is none. Just the meat and it's perfect. The corn shell makes this like cornbread and meat-- a Venezuelan corn dog!!. Awesome! Pabellon: black beans, fried plantains, white cheese and pulled pork. Not my favorite, but an interesting combination of sweet (plantain) and savory (everything else). At this point Marlon checks back in with us for a second time- making sure everything came out right and hot. This first time, he brought over a green sauce for us to try and mentioned that in Venezuela, you don't dip into the sauce, you pour the sauces on: "Because you don't want to leave behind anything good!" Shredded beef baked empanada: Me: "I'm not sure which one this is." Hubby, licking his fingers: "GOOD." This one speaks lunch to me, and the addition of the orange sauce makes it wonderfully delicious. Finally (I told you we ordered a lot!) the shredded beef Arepas: It's like a sandwich with fried corn patties for the bread. Shredded beef, cheese (but not too much), and a green sauce that will BLOW YOUR MIND! I'm so glad we saved this for last, because I'm walking out of here on cloud 9! I'm rarely in the area, but I had to drive out to Spring, so I got the chance to grab a quick meal here. The gentleman behind the counter was super friendly and helpful! I tried three empanadas...the shredded beef, ground beef, and chorizo/egg. All of them were tasty...the shredded beef was a little hard to eat, because the beef pulled out of the empanada shell with every bite. But the ground beef was so good...I loved it dipped in the red sauce. The chorizo/egg was delicious as well, and a little different from the usual chorizo you get in say, a breakfast taco. Less meaty, but still plenty of flavor. I also had a cheese pastel, and it was good too, but I probably preferred the empanadas slightly more. One thing to note is that there's a fridge in there where you can take uncooked empanadas to-go to cook at home. Upon arriving, it's in the center space of a gas station that has 2 additional retail spaces. Inside, you will find a small dining area with four very small tables to sit, should you sit and eat your goodies. I asked what the selection was and granted it was only 2 hours from closing time, the owner mentioned they had about half of the items. They didn't have the pabellon empanadas, which an item I had really wanted to try. Although I had read some reviews before coming and knew they served a variety of items, many which have not made it to their printed menu, I simply ordered the ground beef empanada, shredded chicken pastele, the small tequenos, and a papelon con limon juice (honey, lime juice, raw sugar). What a treat! I've filled up my gas tank at the accompanying Shell station so many times, always vowing I'd go into Pastel Gourmet eventually. Well, I finally did it. Hubby and I were not disappointed. We grabbed 3 different varieties: chicken, beef and an egg and bacon. The chicken and beef come with small containers of an accompanying sauce: garlic or spicy -- we stuck with the spicy, and although it wasn't really super-hot, it did add a bit of a kick and added a nice touch to the meat pastels. A wonderful light lunch that both of us enjoyed. I had picked up the egg and bacon pastel for my son who ate it shortly after we arrived at home. Although he stated he enjoyed it, he commented that there were other breakfast items he enjoyed more. Extremely gracious and accommodating employee that I encountered today -- so friendly! My belleh is happeh. My husband and I wanted to check out this place based on the Yelp reviews. Clean inside with a few tables to sit at. While we were there several other people came in to eat and get things to go. We ordered three types of pasteles: shredded beef, shredded chicken, and egg with bacon. We also ordered one shredded beef empanada and tried a couple of mini cheese fingers. My husband got a bottled water from the fridge and I got coffee. The first thing that made a big impression on us was how hot the food was. I had to wait for the pastries to cool down before I could dig in. I'm much happier to wait for food to cool off than to get some that's lukewarm. Even the coffee, which I got free refills on for eating in, was super hot. I like that most of the pastries do not have cheese in them. My husband's stomach can't handle a lot of cheese, so the offerings are great for us. The shredded beef and chicken pastries are seasoned well, but do not have any spicy heat. I enjoyed the garlic sauce on the beef empanada and the red pepper sauce, which had a little kick, on the egg and bacon pastel. The cheese fingers had a salty melty cheese on the inside which we both liked. All of the pastries had a great texture to the crust. They also have vegetarian options and lunch items are available starting around 11'ish. The owner was very nice and helpful, plus he was easy to talk to while we munched on breakfast. I was really looking forward to visit this place after all the reviews. Especially, I was really looking forward to eat some arepas. When I entered, a really rude lady pointed me to the menu on the side of the counter. No greetings or hello or anything. I asked for arepas and the lady told me with an aggressive tone that there were no arepas, and that they will not be any arepas for some time. Really? A Venezuelan restaurant with no arepas?? That would be the equivalent of a BBQ restaurant without briskets or a Mexican restaurant without tortillas or a McDonald without Big Macs. First impression not good. I will give it another try soon. A great find in the Spring-Cypress area. Is this restaurant adjacent to a gas station? Yes, but if this offends you, boy are you gonna miss out on the Houston food scene. Is this the kind of place that serves food in fry boats? Yes, but, again, see the above answer. Get over it. Are you gonna pay a couple bucks more than other places for breakfast? Only if you're doing it right. We started by trying both juices available - passionfruit was totally good, but how could you mess that up? The other juice - papelón - was amazing. New for both of us. It's a blend of raw sugar, honey, and lemon juice, served cold. Totally fascinating and the sum is more than the parts. We had ham rolls. These are in the kolache family but are lighter, way less greasy, and perfectly breakfasty, if that makes any sense. I coulda had three or four. We also had two baked empañadas- thin and crispy, one stuffed with chorizo and egg (and a lot more besides - maybe some herbs, maybe even spinach?) - and one with traditional scrambled egg and bacon. We found the chorizo one way more interesting, though the bacon is fine for the less adventurous eater. One of the owners (the man, not his wife) was there - he was totally kind and gregarious. The place is cute if a little small. Here's hoping they can catch on and grow and find a space that's a bit more appropriate because the food is phenomenal! They have been open two months and it is a crime that this is the first time I have been in. The name might be confusing so here is what to expect: incredible food and outstanding service. I had the chicken lasagna with us trying out the cheese fingers, the pizza pastales and the enchilada pastales. The meal started with our pastales. He brought my brother and I one each of the pastales with a garlic sauce and a pepper sauce. The enchilada was spicy but not overly so (with me being spicy sensitive), but when you add the garlic sauce it put it over the top. Next I tried the pizza and honestly thought it was even better originally the the enchilada but again you add the dip and you have a new level. Next were the cheese fingers. I would liken them to cheese sticks but that is an insult. Cheese sticks hope and dream to one day grow up, get rich and become these. The owner calls these the hook and I understand why. You must try these. Next came the chicken lasagna. Very smooth taste. Great taste. It is cooked with a kind of spinach in a white cream sauce and was perfect for the day. The owner waited on us and engaged us with great conversation for our whole lunch. He was very friendly and explained each dish and gave suggestions. Shredded Chicken and ground beef deep fried empanadas, Venezuelan cheese pastries, and baked ricotta and spinach empanadas!
