I am from Chicago and we dine out a lot so I was searching hard for a nice place to take my mother for lunch. The options are limited in the area and the reviews for Parkside 23 were positive so I decided to give it a try.
Location/Facility - Off the beaten trail near a park. It was a pretty setting and I read it may be situated near a farm for access to fresh ingredients. There is ample parking and upon entering the restaurant it had a nice bar and modern transitional interior. However, the main dining room was a miss. It was comfortable with tables spaciously positioned but was very dark and not inviting at all given how nice the rest of the layout was designed. It felt very old which it really was not. Perhaps it had to do with how the room was lit...something to consider. On the other hand the patio is very nice and inviting. Very nice in warm weather for sure.
Service - Very friendly and efficient. We had a great waitress and waitstaff.
Food - Menu options for lunch/dinner are the same which is nice. The menu is varied and seems to have some nice comfort food entrees. The ingredients for all of our selections were fresh but the preparation and seasoning was lackluster and disappointing for a few items we selected.
Italian Flatbread - Usinger's pepperoni, sausage, fresh mozzarella, oven roasted onion and pepper. It was very dry and was lacking flavor. Toppings were a little sparse also but the portion size was great for sharing.
Pork Fries - Zesty barbeque pulled pork, Wisconsin beer cheese, poblano peppers, bacon GF was plentiful enough to share but the preparation was disappointing. The entree was not piping hot and the meat tasted like a reheat, the fries were soggy and the cheese was also runny which reminded me of velveeta or cheese whiz which was not appetizing to look at. The chef needs to come to Chicago to really understand how this dish should be prepared.
Corn Chowder soup special - It seemed creamy but lukewarm and tasteless. A real miss. My mother could not even eat it.
Cobb Salad - Very generous portion and fresh ingredients.
Chicken Pot Pie - Obviously a signature dish and it did not disappoint. It was baked to perfection and all ingredients were very fresh. However, it was accompanied by collard greens which was a bizarre combination given all of the other kinds of veggies available. I requested a substitute of brussels sprouts and it was a steamed mess. It had about 4 little sprouts and the rest was slivered carrots. There was no seasoning or anything. The chef should experiment spices/alternative preparation to deliver something more satisfying. I did try the collard greens which someone else got and it was not any better.
Meatloaf - Seasoned tenderloin, mashed potatoes, farm vegetables, tomato sauce and bacon. Several ordered this and liked it. I tried a sampling and it was lukewarm and the potatoes were runny.
Sheherd's Pie - Flaky pie crust, beef and stewed vegetables, mashed potatoes, Wisconsin cheddar. This was a signature dish and everyone was very satisfied with it. It was also very generously portioned. Again, the collard greens combination was not appealing at all and this family loves all veggies except this.
SEARED SCALLOPS Smokey red pepper risotto, balsamic glazed asparagus, caramelized onion beurre blanc was fresh, and prepared perfectly. My mother loved it. Excellent dish!
Overall, it was a nice restaurant in a pretty setting. The fresh concept is very appealing but some of the entrees could use some additional work. It would be good for them to experiment with some seasonings/spices vs just salt and pepper. read more
