Paradox Comics is a small shop that gets a lot done. It shares a storefront with a restaurant and metered parking is available on the street. Interior is not large, but they use the available space well. Paradox has a wall of new pull books and many shortboxes of back issues. Above these shortboxes are a fair selection of toys and collectables. Behind the counter are Pop Vinyl's, variant comic covers, and wall books. They also sell some sports cards and collectable card games. Employee was helpful and knowledgeable. This is a good small shop that has just about everything you would want out of a local comic shop. read more

I was originally posting this review almost a year ago but accidentally posted it elsewhere. An error I just corrected today when I was reviewing my posts and updating my profile. I had read (At the time) a lot of bad reviews regarding this place and I'm surprised. Because it was not as bad as most made this place out to be. My kid (then) was 8 and knows better but had a moment of insanity and started hopping up to smack a toy box from a high perch. I heard the first hop and turned around and immediately scolded him and asked what it was he wanted. The owner was there and only smiled as if she understood. She did not say anything or scold my kid. She just sort of laughed with me as I joked that this is all I needed today... For my kid to smash a whole section of toys and collectibles that I'd have to pay for. Everyone was polite and pleasant and it was busy with kids and parents. We ended up buying a few collectables that were hard to find in terms of the price I wanted to pay. We're collectors so short of finding really good prices for items we tend to pay around the proper market price. As a collector retail stores purporting to sell collectables always try to gouge folks. At this location, The Funko pops (as an example) were about 20-30% over in their pricing. Compared to other stores selling the same collectables. Why then a 3-4? Well...many of the toys are stained and yellowing and are overpriced. Even the comics were 15-30% over usual msrp. In general, I can understand the pricing from a place like this but overall it is not easy to shop for collectibles for myself as everything is generally dirty. I started sneezing just walking inside. This store feels like the twin sibling of another comic and collector store in Miami called: A&M comics. Down to the string up toys with yellowed plastic and caked in dust. In the end, it's a comic shop that also deals in selling collectables. It is not a gaming or hobby shop, nor a normal toy store. So it gets a 3-4 overall. I think the folks there were very polite overall, despite reading reviews that the owners were rude in some way to them or their kids. As a big kid, I will likely return and buy hard to find pieces as I see them but it's not really a spot where I'll buy comic books. read more

Attended my first "Free Comic Book Day" nearly 10 years ago at Paradox, usually make it a point to pass by everytime I'm in Essex county. Smaller and more quaint compared to most shops in North Jersey, and that's definitely a good thing. Every so often, they have some choice Star Wars toylines. I have to say, Paradox Comics is in all likelihood the best comic book store I've ever had the pleasure of giving my business to. I cut my teeth, so to speak, with The Joker's Child, in Fair Lawn, NJ, many moons ago. I've been an avid reader of comics since I discovered them almost 25 years ago, and while I may have frequented stores with a greater back issue collection, or larger square footage, I've never been to a store that I genuinely enjoy visiting as much, each and every week. John (the owner), Carol (his wife), and Mike are the reason. I'm not treated just like another customer there; I'm almost treated like family. I can say with all honesty that my weekly visit to pick up my books (they hold books for regular customers, and even offer up to 20% discount off cover prices based on the volume of your monthly purchase) is my favorite hour spent every week. When the occasion arises where I request a book, or graphic novel, that they don't have in store, John is extremely quick to respond and locate the title(s) in question. Even Mike - when not blaring some 8th tier '80s hair metal band - makes the occasional quality recommendation (thanks for The Walking Dead tip Mike!) They not only make you feel at home, but they actually remember things about you and your life, and the weekly banter and joking that ensues is unique to this store, in my opinion. I could probably find an even greater discount somewhere, based on the sheer volume of books I collect, but I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. If its a comic store that survived the crash of the mid-90's, they have to be doing something right. Family owned and operated, you will find satisfaction at this store whether it be dealing with the service or their prices. The owner under-grades back issues and always will work on a price with you. They have an anniversary 1/2 off sale as well as numerous clearance sales that run usually monthly. They are the only habitual seller on ebay that still has 100% positive feedback! mr.paradoxman is their ebay user id. Stretching from the purchasing part - the owners Mike and John are absolutely hysterical and when provoked will say some pretty outlandish things in your company. I recommend this store more than others in the area because since its their full-time gig, they have enough time to focus on the shop rather than be a teacher full time (a & s comics in teaneck and wildpigcomics in kenilworth) Although those are not bad options themselves. read more

I'm fresh to the comic book scene. I bought my bf the first two volumes of Saga for Christmas, then winded up stealing his two, and then drug him over to Paradox looking for the next 5 issues. I left with what they had, and then someone there turned me on to Walking Dead. Hooked! This place just had a good vibe, and really sucks you in to the world of comic books. If you sign up for a subscription (right word?) you get a 10% off all my orders. Naturally, I signed up for Saga. ( Must. Have. Everyone should go here for their comic and figure needs. I've been good friends with the owners for years and they are always glad to strike up a conversation about comics or anything. Their prices are unbeatable, even for the higher end or older comics. I have been a comic geek for years. Normally I need to deal with 3 or 4 comic book stores to be able to get the things I need. This is not the case here. They get me the books I need every time. I order statues and supplies from them as well and they always come though. They inspect the products I order before I even get to see them and if damaged they take care of it an order me a new one. They are the best in North Jersey and give everyone a run for their money. I moved to Orange county NY 2 years ago and I drive 2 hours to pick my books up and walk the store. Its worth the trip. Got to say the staff seemed nice and friendly. For me though I didn't like the lay out of the store. It was very cramped inside, and they used card board comic storage boxes for back issues. Also the lighting wasn't the best. Again though nice staff just wasn't my cup of tea. read more

Growing up I was an on and off comic book reader, normally anything my friends had laying around or pick up an issue of something here and there but wasn't that serious. As I got older I would try to get into it but some shops were intimidating like some record stores I have been to. You feel you are being judged for being a new guy or for what you pick up, any time you ask for help you get a weird sigh or here something said under the clerks voice. Well Paradox is not that at all. I started going up there a few weeks ago and haven't even had an experience I would deem just ok. Yes the store is small but the layout is great for people like me who don't have that much time to be in there (pregnant wife and a 3 year old are normally with me when I stop by), all the newest issues are up on a wall so you can quickly take a glance at them and grab what you want. They even have a section that is mainly Kids comics, which I normally grab one for my daughter. Great selection of toys and figures as well, even blind box and bag toys. Can't recommend this place enough. read more

This is one of my favorite comic shops! The best in New Jersey!! A few years ago, I went there looking for some back issues. What they didn't have in the store, they have in their special stock of comics. They really went out of their way to get whatever I needed! Great shop! Very helpful and friendly! This is a great business, they have a good selection of comics and the staff is great! If you are forgetful (like me) John (the owner) doesn't mind making you a pull list so you don't miss an issue. Not to mention once you start going in and picking up your books he and Carol begin knowing you on a first name basis, which is great because they make you feel really welcome and like they want to help you out. Another thing that is really great is they have a tonne of back issues that aren't in store, so if you can't find something that day John has no problem checking his stock for you and contacting you with his findings. Variants are also reasonably priced. Some other things that are worth mentioning are the modest prices of cataloging items such as boxes, bag and boards, and separators; the great selection of action figures and other miscellaneous collectibles ranging from action figures to busts, sports memorabilia and CCGs to TCGs; and a constantly updating dollar box (probably could be nicknamed Buck Book Box). The rest has all been said before in these reviews, but I'll say again the annual sale is great they go out of their way to really show customer appreciation in all shapes and sizes, half off back issues to extra credit trade-ins on that day. Also offered is CGC Grading, if you are unsure of the process John will give you the low down on the procedures and pricing before you are committed to sending out your precious book for an official CGC Grade, you know they'll treat your books well because they are listed on CGC's site to "find a shop near you". Lastly, they are well stocked on Free Comic Book Day. So in closing Paradox Comics, great store, if you are looking for a comic shop that makes you feel welcome and appreciated check them out, you'll be pleasantly surprised. read more

For anybody who has patronized a particular comic store for ant length of time, you would have to be an idiot not to recognize Paradox as the best around. I patronized one store in the Bergen mall for about 20 years before discovering Paradox and i was treated better there than the mall store ever did! John, Carol and Mike do all they can for me. I susscribe to their pull list program, and they have my books ready for me when i walk in the store. A new comic shop opened up about 1/2 mile from my house, but i' still travelling to NA. Great little comic book store! I've been to MidTown Comics in NYC (which is considered by some to be the best comic book store in the world). It's great, but I visited Paradox Comics in North Arlington for the first time last week, and was really pleasantly surprised! I was looking for the new Popeye comics (which I was convinced they wouldn't have). Well, I was wrong. Not only did they carry them, but when the clerk realized that issue #1 was not in stock, he went out of his way to write down my email and told me he would try to reorder it for me. Paradox Comics is a place I highly recommend for its selection, service, and overall cool, laid-back vibe. These are rare things to experience these days. It makes it as good as MidTown Comics. Even though PC is not as big as MTC, I look forward to visiting Paradox Comics again; I'm not sure that I can say the same about the cold, factory-like MTC in NYC. read more
