Good comic selection, and the atmosphere is pretty cool. Prices on comics aren't great frankly, but sadly there aren't a whole lot of comic shops close so for the most part you're stuck here. Your only other option is Midtown Comics which is much better in every way. I've been going here for years though both to get stuff and to walk around, and it's still not bad. However the workers there are very rude a lot of the time. It's kind of been like this ever since I've been there. Like they're either not that willing to be helpful or they are actually straight up rude. After years of going to this place I actually saw a figure I wanted for the first time in one of the glass cases, and decided to grab one. Unfortunately there was a little small sign on the OTHER case that said don't open. After I basically got my figure out one of the employees stopped me. I profusely apologized once I realized my mistake, and still the employee told me around five times not to open even after I stepped away and apologized many times. But still I stood there and apologized for the display (a bunch of boxes). Then he gave me what I wanted (after I already basically did it myself) and then I went to the register. I then said "sorry I've been going here for years but I never got something out of the case before so I didn't know." And then another employee (who by the way was facing the case the whole time) said "It's behind glass for a reason", as if I'm in a museum. I apologized and left. The staff has been rude and entitled before but this has been my worst experience yet. Fun to walk around in, but it's hassle actually going here. read more

So it was fun to look around and check things out. However, I accompanied my hubby here on Free Comic Book Day. It was very disappointing to hear that they had actually run out of free comics. Fantastic selection of both floppies and graphic novels. However, I have never had a positive experience with the employees. Every time I go back hoping it will change but it never has. They're either rude, ill-prepared, not knowledgeable, or flat out won't give me a straight answer. They are also the most disorganized store I've ever experienced when trying to place orders or set up pullboxes. I pre-ordered four books and never heard back. I try to set up a subscription by filling out the form they gave me and they never followed through. Great comics. Horrendous customer service. If you can avoid dealing with their staff, it's great. read more

As I was perusing the selections before heading off to dinner with my friend, I got suckered reading a bit of the latest volume of Black Butler, which I haven't caught up with in a hot minute. Forbidden Planet compliments favorably to a distant past a old school favorite bookstore nearby on the same block. Forbidden Planet is great place to find that superhero comic, T-shirt, Pop figurine, coffee mug, key chain, 30 sided dice, knick knack, patty whack,.. you are looking for. With the walls partially covered with posters/t-shirts, your eyes are kept amused no matter where you look. For an older dinosaur like me, I'd enjoy visiting when I have no particular reason to do so and especially if I'm suffering from comic con withdrawal. If there is one thing I'd improve, I'd say the prices could be better but this is Manhattan and old school nostalgia like Forbidden Planet are fewer and fewer in existence. read more

Holy Comic Bookstore Batman!! Being from the northwest I feel the most comfortable around the nerds, the geeks and the outcasts. A comic book/movie/toy store is a sacred place for all the like minded peeps. I recently went for the Playghoul signing, Playghoul is a collection of Vampira publications in a nutshell. There's also cool illustrations and articles to boot. "The Mighty Moloch" aka Mike Decay but as I like to refer to him "Lewi" is head of this Vampira operation. I don't think I know a bigger Vampira fan. He's a doer and a shaker. The panel for the autographs also included local favorites and artist, Donny David, Andrea Sicco and Sara Antoinette Martin. They're are all a bunch of talented sweeties! It was the perfect time to get my Playghoul. I bumped into the organizer of the event and buddy Matt Desiderio aka Horrorboobs. I know, everyone has a nickname in this town. I guess that's how you know you've made it. In this time I met or talked to all the eccentrics of the comic bookstore and heard their unique questions. I couldn't tell if they were regulars or here for the event. I guess it will remain a mystery but it's definitely part of the experience. Events for singings are done pretty regularly. So always keep your eyes peeled for your nerd hero passing through. I came here a couple months ago with my 7 year old nephew and he was in literal heaven. His dad is a huge comic book, horror and video game fan so he's trained the kids well. My sister got him some sort of goodies. He enjoyed all the glass cases with collectibles and memorabilia. This is a long standing business that has been around since I was a kid. The location is different from when I was growing up and shopping here but this particular location has been here for a while at this point. It's a geek's wet dream lol. They have it all here: comics, games, action figures, clothes, accessories, supplies. It's been one of my favorite stores for this long with good reason. I sometimes try to avoid going unnecessarily cause I wind up spending way more than intended but at least I walk out with a smile and some new comics to read or something else to appreciate my geekdom with. I miss these old school comics and manga book stores. The last time I was here was almost 20 years ago. They sell everything you can think of from collectibles, POP Figures, tees, stickers, trading cards, and your RPG accessories - dice for playing. I came here during the weekend and there were plenty of people browsing at the bottom latest comics, just be released apparently as it was a comic giveaway weekend. I brought my kids to see this store given their interest in Anime and particular POP Figures. We were also on a hunt for some Father's Day gift ideas as my hubby is a fan. So much to see and lots on display. The staff were all very helpful in finding me items I asked for. And it seems the system is to request an item off the wall or in the glass case and they'll gladly hold it up front while you shop. I ended up with a handful of goodies. The t-shirts are $20 each or two for $35 for the most part. It's advertised so you can confirm. Also, as I mentioned in my Yelp check in, if you spend $20+ you'll get a free recyclable store brand tote. It's a great size for all your swag. And the manager was really sweet, he saw me with three kids and generously gave me free comic books for them, mixed genres, good for all ages. I browsed through it on the way home and saw some cool preview titles: Scooby Doo, Star Wars, Batman, and a bunch of new previews. Sweet!! I can't say enough good things about the incredible staff at Forbidden Planet. The selection is amazing, but truly it was all about the staff for me. They are so extremely knowledgeable, helpful, kind and passionate. I came to buy transformer toys and comic books for my 5 year old as a get well soon present. I picked up a couple of single comics and some action figures. The staff actually knew which comics I had chosen and suggested others that had a slightly less intense depiction of violence- more bang pow than what I had originally chosen. They were SO kind and patient with a relative Transformer Newb, but catered their customer service to EXACTLY what I needed, just a mom trying to impress her kid. I ordered some comics that they set aside. They will hold them for three days. The store is packed with lots of action figures , toys and graphic novels. I could not figure out how to find the comic I was looking for. They are not arranged by publisher exactly . I saw there was a separate section . Comics are on the back wall. The top two rows are new comics . The lower rows are not new . There is a vertical box where older comics are filed alphabetically. My son is a comic book artist so I have visited many stores. I gave them a four because it was not user friendly for me without asking for help. read more

One of the supervisors accused me on knocking items down as I was looking around and we got into a vulgar shouting match in which I ended up getting banned from the store for life. On top on that, one of the employees threatened me and we almost came to blows in which we would've all gotten arrested. It's a pretty good shop, they usually still have all the sold out comics that I can't find at my LCS. The only reason they're getting 4 stars is because I bought a comic that I wasn't feeling too much after reading it so I read the exchange policy on my receipt and it said that there was a 10-day policy. I came back before the due date just for them to tell me that they don't do exchanges on single issue comics. I don't understand why they didn't make that clear on the receipt. Finally found a good toy store for collectors. This place is not too far a walk from Union Square. Store had all modern toy collectibles like Star Wars, G.I. Joe, Batman, Super7, Transformers, Funko Pop, and so much more then I can list. All the times I have come here, I always find that one hard to find collectible that was in short supply at retail stores. They may be a little higher price tag then retail but I don't mind as I was happy to add that to my collection. This store also has trading cards but more Pokémon or Magic. No sports cards. They also have models as well. If your in NYC and looking for a good toy store then come here as you will not be disappointed. I've been going to FP for years now (29 now so...since 2001) and it's one of the best shops and comic shops in NY. This iteration of the shop is better than the way it was at the corner of the same block it is still thriving on. Their selection-their library- is great. It always has been. It may feel a little cluttered and you might feel overwhelmed thanks to the omnibus and books they place on the top of their shelves which can be a little distracting but it's part of their charm. They keep most of their omnibus behind the register and they stock a LOT of them. The staff is usually really helpful and passionate too. Their selection of manga is great! I don't like going here for weekly pickups because it is pretty difficult to see the books since the shop is more dimly lit than the rest I've been too. Love this place forever. read more

I actually came here 3 times during my trip, buying stuff twice. 3 stars for friendliness. On my last visit I bought something and the cashier was rude. She didn't greet me when I approached the register. I asked if I could redeem the check in offer listed on yelp for the tote bag. She rudely responded that they were "sold out", even though I saw customers at the other registers next to me getting tote bags. Then after paying I said "thank you". She just looked at me with a resting bitch face and that was it. It leaves a bad taste in a customers mouth. I didn't catch her name but she had glasses and was a brown/black haired girl. The Planet has been around as long as I've been alive, chock full of comics and manga, graphic novels galore, and anime, and toys - no, not THOSE kind of toys, just ones related to movies and comics, and T-shirts in case you get cold. There are glorious art books too, books that would sit right at home on your coffee table, next to that D&D set. They're appropriately uppity about security. Carrying a large enough bag to potentially stash swiped merchandise? You'll have to check it in up front. Toting around a camera? Shutterbugs, note photography is not permitted, probably for fun intellectual property reasons regarding store setups and all the copyrighted stuff lying around.
