Their prices are pretty standard across most NYC comic shops. But, I find their service to be their hallmark. On so many occasions, staff has gone out of their where to look for a book I couldn't find, grab me something I missed while I'm checking out, and just offer a warm and positive attitude while I'm there. I think this is a solid shop and I always recommend it to people looking for comics in NYC.

I made the fairly long drive with cash in hand, ready to buy, so I was disappointed to discover that the books shown online were not actually available in the store. Unfortunately, I also didn't find much in the way of higher-value Silver or Bronze Age keys, either raw or slabbed. If you're looking for reasonably priced mid-grade books or trying to fill some gaps in your collection with non-key back issues, this could definitely be a fun store to browse. However, if you're a collector specifically looking for higher-grade books, significant keys, or more valuable Silver and Bronze Age material, you may be better served looking elsewhere. I just wish the website had made it clearer that the inventory shown online wasn't representative of what was actually available in the store.

This weekend I picked up two GNs, one about Egyptian mythology called Pantheon and one called Year of the Rabbit, a survivor's tale of the Khmer Rouge. I met Gabe too. He was really nice and personable, and was busy talking to customers while also looking at a GN brought in by a local comic artist. It was cool to see him offer feedback to this young guy. At the same time, he was talking to me and parent about which GNs have helped her son get into reading. I'll definitely continue to support this local business.

But if you're looking for treasures, hard to find older issues, or just older comics in general that you want to read and don't care about the resale value or the condition it's in, this is the place for you. It's a place for collectors and enthusiasts that are searching because they want to own something, not because they're trying to hold it for resale. As for me, I was able to grab Star Wars IV, V, VI in comic form which I never even knew they made, just $5 each. I think this is a must-visit for comic lovers and I'm SO glad our uncle brought us here. Fastforward to today not only is bulletproof ushering in a new crop of Comics, Manga and tcg collectors. Hank has singlehandedly cultivated some of the biggest comic events to date in Brooklyn. FRANK MILLER, yes the Frank Miller came to Brooklyn and had a signing. Hank has had celebrities from "The Flatbush Zombies" to Rob Markman, Comic Royalty such as Joe Illidge also frequent the shop. Not to mention Hank had adapted with the times. Video Games, Retro Games, Skateboards to Manga. Now High end Lithos and paintings. ALL while providing quality service. Im sorry no store in Nyc is beating Bulletproof Comics.

Buying and Selling at Book Off What a cool store. So much to…read moresee. Unfortunately, it is lousy to sell at and expensive to buy at. First, Selling. I brought in three statue items unopened in the original packaging. I checked on ebay for what the items sold for (not asking price but sold price) and it added up to about $600, I lugged the items over there and had to leave them there because they wouldn't get to them right away. The people/kids working there were very nice. I went to have lunch and got the text to return, and they are offering $150. So I picked up the items and turned down the offer. Again, they were very nice, it's just I wasn't willing to accept 25% of the value. I figured at worst it would be 50%. But I am better off getting closer to the actual price on ebay. Now, Buying. Lots of very expensive and exiting things to get, and I didn't have time to price check things so much, but my son is into the Nintendo switch and i spotted a used Marvel VS Capcom game he might like. It was $34.95. But just in case, I pulled up Amazon and looked the game up. A brand new one costs $21.79. So it would have been a terrible idea for me to buy it there. I guess if you are leaving work and need a quick gift, you might stop in and pay too much for an item. If you are in real trouble and don't have time to wait for an Ebay sale, you might consider selling your collectables for 25% the value, this place might come in handy.

First off, let me say that while The Lair is a "comic book store" in that they sell comics, they…read moresell many other things as well - toys, caps, accessories, and - most importantly for me - Magic The Gathering cards. I don't really buy anything but Magic cards there (and peripherals), but the comic section is up to date and they offer a subscription service - so tell them what books to pull and they'll be there waiting for you when you come in to pick them up. The Lair has recently started bringing in celebrities (from the comic and sci-fi/fantasy world) for signing events and meet and greets - for a store in the Bronx, this is a big deal! Magic the Gathering is now a big part of what The Lair does - and if you're looking to play on a Friday night or over the weekend (Standard, Modern, Constructed, Draft, etc...) this is your spot in the Bronx. For marathon sessions - caffeine and sugar filled snacks are available for purchase (most at $1 each). The owner goes out of his way to do right by his customers - all sorts of perks, give-aways, etc... And the regular customers are a pack of really great guys (I saw someone bring a girlfriend once - so females do pop in, but don't expect too many of them to be there at any given time). I wish I could give that fifth star, but the accommodations are cramped. It's not anyone's fault - the store was not set up to be a gaming space... But - as you might imagine - some people who play Magic are larger dudes who need space to spread out. And yes - there's a bathroom on site to use - but I don't recommend it if you're claustrophobic (it makes the store iteself appear spacious). Again - these are really only issues if you plan to play games (literally) at The Lair and are going to be there for multiple hours on end. As a straight store for shopping for your comic, sci-fi, fantasy, and gaming needs - top notch. Highly recommended!
