Just got off a cross-country flight and made the move to a comic shop that I'd heard about over the years...I'd been after some specific Neal Adams covers for a while, and they happened to have 3 big "wants" sitting right there looking as clean as possible. Not only that, but they hooked up an on-the-spot customer recommended graphic novel based on the stack that I purchased. It was a great read on the trip and flight home. Hilarious guys and the owner couldn't be more accommodating. I'm just hoping they ship too - highly recommended! read more

Walked away with a couple of great additions to my collection after chatting with one of the guys. I would have never discovered this with my friend if we didn't take the train to Astoria Ditmars. She wanted a "Little Mermaid" comic book. I was just mentally curious and not looking to spend money but explored the star wars comics, action figures, archie comics, buffy things. I got lost for a minute. Great collection and they have some old tattered comics that they sell for a pretty reasonable discounted price. I went to this place and grabbed a bunch of key books and some with prices others without. After he gave me a price for the lot so I took some of the books out of the lot and he up-charged the remaining books so the total would be about the same. Worst of all, left a few of the books on the side and left the shop but I changed my mind and returned an hour later to buy them. He up-charged the price of the books I found. It was the worst experience. If you ever go here only purchase the books with price tags and leave the rest. read more

This is a small store that is meant as a place to pick up what you're looking for when you want it. It's located more or less inside Ditmars-Astoria station at the end of the N/W line. It's wall to wall comics, with new issues stretching across the left side of the store, in plastic bins which sit on the wall. Along the right (and on the floor in the back) are bookshelves stuffed with trade paperbacks--all sorted by publisher and slipped in plastic bags. Then in the center are two bins of back issues. As I said this is a place to stop by if you live in Astoria and just need to pick up a few titles. I disagree greatly with the previous review that the titles are badly sorted. The new (and recent) single issues are all alphabetical by title, or name of popular character. Everything is sorted in hardcase plastic bins against the wall. Each weeks new issues are noted with a card taped to that case--NEW THIS WEEK! If they have the issue I want I've always found it. Also, the staff is there to leave you be, but help when you ask. In this way it's a real comic book store. I admit a "hello" when I enter any store is nice, but I don't expect it in every comic book store I go into. It's a bit frustrating that every trade paperback is wrapped in plastic. It just makes it clearer that this place is meant for people that already pretty much know what they want. I went in one time wanted Iron West from Image and found it. But if I wanted to check out a new TPB I'm not familiar with, those plastic bags make it pretty impossible. Pretty much this is meant for Queens locals who just need their books for the week. There's nothing particularly special about this small store that would bring you out from a far. But it's definitely worth stopping in if you find yourself at Ditmars-Astoria. read more

Silver Age is easily the best comic shop in Queens, and probably in the entire city. No matter what other reviews here say, Gus (the owner) and Mike are both great guys who are knowledgeable and friendly. The store's merchandise is extensive, with HUNDREDS of books from the Silver age to the modern. One just has to be willing to spend a little time digging. That's what buying vintage books is about. The new stuff is all readily and easily available on the wall for people looking for that. If there is anything you're looking for that you don't see, chances are they have it elsewhere and can get it for you, or they don't and are totally willing to order it. And their rewards program is the best in the city. Better than Midtown's. I think a lot of criticism towards this comic shop is that it is exactly that--an old school comic shop with an old school feel. That isn't for everybody, but for my money, it's better than shopping on Amazon or at a place trying to be Macy's or Walmart. Shop local! Support small businesses! read more

I had gone here once or twice before when I was looking for a specific comic book (sadly, they did not have it). It's in a not so typical location, but a pretty awesome one. Right when I get off of the train at Dekalb it's hooked onto the station. This makes it so easy to get to. Today I was looking for something that I thought they wouldn't have, but I needed to try. I explained to the staff what I was looking for and they were actually EXTREMELY helpful. They searched for the different comics that contained what I needed along with explaining to me some information about a specific character I was interested in. Lastly, they went above and beyond by checking online for me certain character costumes. They showed me what website to go to and where to find the information. I was so happy with the service and how nice they were and ended up buying to specific comics that caught my eye. I was really happy with this shop and they did not treat me like a "n00b". I stopped by this store hoping to find some decent books. I left the store holding one book in my hand. First off they have lots and lots of new issues which is fine if that's what you like. Unfortunately for me I'm into the back issues. This is where most stores falter. It's either disorganized or overpriced. Theirs were overpriced. I saw a few books in pretty bad condition priced at near mint price. The store is good if you live near and are into new books. Otherwise save yourself a trip. I have shopped here for the last 6.5 years ever sne I moved to this part of Astoria and let me say it is very convenient, I can step off the station and pick up my comics. Every Christmas Gus the owner has a 6 foot sub and libations for staff and customers to enjoy. They are very flexible with subscriptions and will always be willing to geek out about comics and pop culture in general. They are guys so language could but rarely gets salty. Sarcastic Mike is, but so what. They are good guys and have all the new comics you need and if you want something they do not have they will order it for you. Free bags with every comic. Plus a 20% rebate for every 100 purchased on new comics. It's a neighborhood shop and the guys who work here know their stuff and it's been a pleasure to support the shop.. read more

It's been a while since I bought comics, so I guess shame on me for not remembering they come out on Wednesday. Anyway my old place never put them out the day before release anyway. So I pick out 3 new books and I'm told I can't buy them until the following day, I'm annoyed, but ok. A guy - possibly the owner I'm not sure - puts them aside for me, never asks my name, says he'll remember. I ask what time they are open to - 9 pm, ok. I go back the following day a little after 8 pm and he sold one of the books I wanted to someone else. As a new customer why exactly would I ever come back here? I took his word he would hold those 3 books and he did whatever he wanted to, so his word means nothing. Guess I'll check out my old place, which is what I should have done in the first place. read more

It is the ditmars location for comics. The location couldnt be more convenient for a queens based comic fan. Having said that back issues ran a plenty wi a wall of just about any current issue comic you could be desperate to get a hold of. Staff was great to hang out with especially for greateful dead fans. They were also super welcoming to new people. Handy signs help you find your way there. Negatives- sorry guys Graphic novels were plentiful but not AS comprehensive for a graphic novel man or woman. You might have to go shop around if they dont have it. You never know what youre in for when you come in here. At best its the colorful local gem for all things otherworldly at worst its a heck of a lot better then amazon. read more

I have read all the reviews and I must admit, the negative reviews have irked me a bit. I have been a customer of Silver Age comic for over 20 years. TWENTY YEARS! The fact that this business has lasted over 20 years should give you a hint that they are doing something right. Let me touch on some of the negatives that reviewers have posted: ----"It's too cramp": This is NY people, real estate is not cheap, yet with the limited space they have, they still have new books, back issues, graphic novels, action figures, t-shirts, statues and busts, and lots more. Not only that, but the owner has rented the space across from the store, where he stores TONS of back issues. ----- "the place is smelly, with smoke/drinking rum and beer": OK, so a customer may light up a cig here and there, or someone may have the occasional adult beverage, BIG DEAL. Guess what people, the Volstead Act has been repealed, and some States are now allowing for legalized, recreational Marijuana. Can't handle it? Then move to Amish Country. They have a comic book store, Puritan Comics. Problem is, they only sell Archies comics. Have fun with that. ----"This place is a dump, and the guys who work their won't stop talking to each other": REALLY??!?! As I mentioned above, I have been a customer for over 20 years, a dump it is not. The floors are clean, the walls covered in great merchandise and posters. The ceiling has cool stuff hanging from it. The wall behind the register is wall to wall classic issues of some of the greatest comics of all time. As far as the workers talking to each other, this isn't a library, employees talk to each other. ----"Rude staff": A couple of reviewers complained of rude staff. Allow me to clarify things. The owner Gus is a great guy. He may not be in the best of moods on any given Wednesday, but who can blame him. It's his busiest day of the week. He is busting his hump trying to get the new books in order, to please his customers. That being said, there is a staff member there by the name of Mike, and I am sure he is what has created a lot of the "rude staff" reviews. Mike may come off as "rude", but believe me, he is not rude, his demeanor just makes his come off as an ass. He has been working at the store for years, and if he wasn't capable, he would have been fired a LONG time ago. Wow, this place was terrible. Cramped, not a great selection of comics, especially new comics. I went in on a Saturday and the first thing that greeted me was the guy working behind the counter dropping "eff" bombs every third word. No "hello", or any form of welcome or acknowledgment at all. I wanted to pick up that week's new comics - none of which were to be found. TERRIBLE layout. I've been going to comic book stores since 1983 and I've seen some bad layouts, but this one was one of the worst. Avoid unless you are desperate or have no drive to take that 20 minute trip into the city. The only thing this place is "THE" of is insulting "customer service", smelly atmosphere and poor selection of comics. If you go you'll do like I did and walk out without purchasing anything in minutes of walking in. read more

a cool comic book shop in astoria on 31st ave near the ditmars station that will make the comic book geeks and nerds very happy. this place is wall to wall with all the genre of comics and plenty of toys including superhero models and many other characters . i was not into the superhero comics as i preferred richie rich, casper the friendly ghost and the dc horror comic books the most and lucky me i found 4 comic books that i can enjoy reading at work, during lunch time or when boredom at work is creeping up . what was going to be a short 10 minute visit turned into 30 minutes as i was like a 10 year old in a candy store going all around in circles . i was able to roam around freely and when help is needed the guys who work here are experts knowing the a to z. of the comic galaxy. besides the comics i also purchased a creepy looking monster type model which looks like my friends wife but is not as scary as her. overall from a casual comic book fan to the hardcore type this comic book shop is cool. read more

This place is the classic comic book shop from the 70's - 80's. It reminds me of the shops i grew up with and I love this joint. Yeah, its small & a little cramped, yeah there are books everywhere and the guys who work there curse and agrue about cartoons, tv, girls and baseball..... THATS WHAT MAKES IT AWESOME!!! I hate people who complain on Yelp. I'm only leaving this review so the owner will see it, since they never showed. I get my books here every week(or almost every week). They offer a competitive discount, and a pull list, which is nice. While the store is a bit cramped, making back issue searching tricky, the layout is easy to figure out, and the staff is friendly. If you're ever looking for something, they'll make the effort to try and get it for you, even if they have to order it. read more

Silver Age is very easy to find, and is not as cramped and tight on space as I was lead to believe after reading some of the reviews. In fact, I had a one-year old strapped to me in a baby carrier... believe me, this comic shop may be small, but it isn't what I'd call cramped. This place is 'top of the line'. It has vintage comics and new specially old, which everybody likes. If you're looking for hotness then you must come to this place. They have a hard selection of X-men comics, Spiderman, Secret Wars, Avengers, Batman, etc. The store is in such a secluded place, it's within the train station Astoria Ditmars Blvd. The price range is lovely. Comics are $1.50, $2.00, $6.00, $3.50. So good. The staff is nice, the guy helped me look for some Captain America comic I needed. They were about to close when he went to the back staff room to look for the comic I seeked. This place is a must go. It has an old school vibe to the store. It seems it's been there for a while, but that's what I like about this place. I don't know. That's just my opinion. They "do" have a spiderman blow up doll rocking on the ceiling. They had 50% off comics in one section of the store. It ain't so big but it's 'top notch' on their collection of comics. At least for what I was looking for. The toy selection is okay, I felt some huge Iron man toy they had rocking in the store. 5 stars for this one. This was the easiest comic shop to find. So good. read more

Call me Shania Twain, because this place "don't impress me much". This place boasts a sweet location, (it's right outside the Astoria-Ditmars subway station), but that's pretty much the only thing it's got going on for it. It's pretty small like most comic book shops in the city, so if you're expecting something like Midtown Comics, look elsewhere. Going through their back issues, I was sufficiently "whelmed". Lots of stuff from the 90s and 00s but no "silver age comics" as the name would imply. There were some long boxes around and when I tried looking through it, the one guy working there, basically said those boxes were off limits because "they haven't been priced" and if I wanted to know how much something was, i would have to wait til the owner gets in some other day of the week. Lame! Places like Montasy Comics in Forest Hills and Mysterious Time Machine in Manhattan will price comics based on the Overstreet Price Guide right then and there, you don't have to wait for some guy to come in on a completely different day. They have a good amount of graphic novels, but most are wrapped in plastic which is good if you wanna keep it pristine, but not good if you wanna leaf through it before buying. The aforementioned one guy working there was kind of a prick and didn't seem all too interested in helping me, I asked him where one title was and he pointed in a general direction and said "over there", i eventually found what I was looking for myself. When I was finally ready to purchase the guy just wordlessly took the comics from me, gave me the price without looking at me, then put it a bag and that was that. No "thank you" or "have a nice day" or anything. I would recommend this place if you live in Astoria,but there are definitely way better comic book stores in the city. Check out "Mysterious Time Machine" in Manhattan if you want ACTUAL silver age comics and friendly service. read more

Their prices are virtually unbeatable, they have a massive stock of back issues including some serious key issues.
