They try their hardest to make sure their huge selection of cards are easy to purchase either via their discord channel or walking into see what's on display. I always feel that my value for convenience is alway met and exceeded. I was on a long time hunt for a particular card (Tiamut) and they were quick to let me know when they got one in. This is clearly a hidden gem that can serve as an amazing community gather spot. I came in looking for puzzles and they had a bunch. The front area is reserved for a series of games that you can buy. The back section is where you can play games that you either hit or they have games that you can play. The games - like the puzzles were pricey. The puzzles were $20+. To play it costs $10 per person and if you buy a game worth $20 then you do not need to pay the $10 fee. I like the space and the workers here seem great. It's chock full of cool items for gifts. I noticed they have a spot in the back that you can play games per hour. Interesting board gaming store in Astoria. This little shop boasted an impressive amount of board / card games to choose from. There was a ton of Magic decks and expansions, as well as Star Wars card games. There were many obscure board games as well. The board games, many of which had a dungeons and dragons gameplay emphasis, were extensive and variable. One, called Scythe, was set in early 1900s and had a post-apocalyptic and Robotech feel all wrapped up in a steam punk blanket. The box even suggested game time - 2 hours, roughly to play a round. Shop had a very large area in back dedicated to game play, so much so that it served to detract from the place being a store. Perhaps that's where the real money was with this place, but the storefront ended up coming across as an afterthought, making the place overall a little off putting. read more

So yesterday I went to get some singles little cards. Why do I get little cards is because I know they are going to try and jack up everything so there is a card that is going for $18 online. Now today they have this card for $20 and I say OK and then ask for a bunch of other singles and then they say it's $25 now and they say no then I'm not taking it for 25 because you said it was $20 and they said I meant $20-$25 I said well then you can hold onto that then because I'm not gonna pay $25 for that card then they say OK I'll charge you $20 for the card and then I said fine but do you understand that is one of the problems with them I love it that they sell singles of all rarities but they do this all the time. So to make it a little easier for you, you would give a list on Discord and they will tell you OK we will sell it for this much money now you have to take a screenshot of that so that way when you go in person to pick up those singles and make sure, they give you for that much and that is usually not a problem because you were just going in there to pick up the order for the money you agreed to. The problem is that whenever you are trying to get a single on the spot they will definitely try to take advantage of the customer. It is not the first time they have done this to me. I purchased a single that online it sells for $.18 and they told me it's for $2.50. I was about vomit. Not just that but I used to play there for a couple of months. I would go there Friday Night Magic. It is for the draft but there is this one player where he cheats all the time and then his good buddy happens to be the owner (Kevin); when he's the judge owner and just says "I don't know" and then he gets away with it and I lose. I don't mind losing but if you're going to cheat and the judge is also corrupted, then I don't want to play there anymore which is why I have not played there Ever since then. Last night I played one game because I was just putting the cards that I purchased into my deck and the kid wanted to play so badly a match and so we played. It was done in like maybe 15-20 minutes. I don't mind going there, but if you're going to not only cheat as the "judge" but then tell your employees to jack up the prices multiple times on the same day I'm like no thank you. I really really hope people read this and I'm sure the owner will ban me from the store but I think TCG player.com would be more helpful which sucks because I did like this place but I mean being there you'll learn you'll listen. Also, it is tiny over there so whenever they have an event it's so packed. Good things is the selection. The staff are god people (I just don't like how they try to scam you right there. read more

They also carry collectible cards like Pokémon and Magic; plus, they have a rewards program that helps knock off a few bucks every once in a while. Chill cool place , super reasonable ~ We roll in w/ our crew of 8 wanting to kill sometime before we headback (to Boston, to Cali). Unfortunately we didn't know they were gonna have a tournament. However they were courteous enough and said we can just play some games and if they get too many people then we can leave without paying the $5 fee/per person to play games. We stayed for 2 hours playing a couple of classic games since they didn't have to kick us out early then we wanted to stay we then paid them. I think that's super fair ya ~ Lots of games to choose from to play and good collection to buy from. The price are decent, if you check Amazon there may be a couple of dollar difference (but if you don't have amazon prime and you pay the shipping fee it would be equal anyways~) read more

This store is located close to Steinway Street station in which you can take the E M R Trains Q66 Q101 Q104 Buses If you want to draft limited in MTG this store runs about 3 separate pods from 5pm - 10p You need to arrive before 5 pm most of the time to join the first pod they often fill up quickly before large tournaments. Store has a nice clean bathroom and a large screen to view pairings for each round . I also think the store owner is pretty cool and fair for handling the events and letting people know what's up! read more

The Geekery HQ is single-handedly the best addition to Astoria, no, Queens (possibly the five boroughs) for any gamer, whether it be tabletop, boardgames, role-playing, trading card games, or what have you. Sorry guys, no video games here, just that face-to-face interaction stuff. The staff here is THE. BEST. Chillest Filipinos ever. Everyone who works here is incredibly friendly, approachable, and down to earth. Wendy is the friendly face (and owner) you usually see behind the counter. If anyone gives her a hard time, I will pretty much cut them. Between Syrus (co-owner), King, Koko, and anyone else I'm forgetting, someone will gladly explain what certain games are like if you have questions. Magic Tournaments! Into it? Great, this is the place to be for you. Magic isn't my thing, but if it's yours, then every Monday night at 7pm you can play Legacy. There are regular sealed-deck Swiss style tournaments periodically (I hope you know what that means, because I don't), with a prize being a whole sealed box of cards. $30 entry fee for the bigger events, ~$15 for the smaller ones. Prizes range from boosters to $50 store credit. You can play Modern every Thursday, and Drafting/Standard every Friday. Demo new games! Because The Geekery is still brand new, they're doing tons of demos to show people how to play certain games. To date, they've done HeroClix, Star Wars X-Wing, Dungeons and Dragons 5th ed., Netrunner, and Malifaux, with lots more demos scheduled for the coming weeks. Oh, and demos are FREE! Awesome! Big library of rentable games! For $5 you can rent any game in their rentable library and play all day in store. No, you can't take it home, but the geekery could be your second home anyway. Plus, it's a great way to find out which games you like and might want to buy. Library includes classics like Ticket to Ride, Carcasonne, and various editions of Catan, to games you can pick up easily like Times Up. Want to make enemies and develop trust issues instead of making friends? Great! Play Lords of Vegas or Dead of Winter. Between Abyss, Hyperborea, Lords of Waterdeep, Splendor, and 35 other games, you'll find something you'll enjoy. Gaming area! I forgot to mention: the whole back half of the store has a bunch of tables and chairs for you to get your game on. Purchase selection! Lots of different games to choose from, just note that the prices are MSRP. Honestly, a few of the smaller games aren't that much cheaper on amazon or anything, so support your local game store and get your goods from these guys. They carry minis, paints, x-wing, heroclix, magic the gathering, dice, etc. Late hours! Open until 11pm, I believe, on weekends. This place has everything going for it. Whether you're a seasoned gaming veteran or have no idea what the hell you're doing, I can assure you this is the place to be to have a good time and learn. Chill place, staff is cool. Big selection on many things. My only issue with the place is how over priced everything is. Bought a set booster box of the commander legends baldurs gate that ran me $157 at this place mean while Amazon has em up with same day shipping for $105. Do yourself the favor and buy off Amazon. Sure you don't get the buy a box but with the extra cash you'll have over you can just buy the card and still have money left over. I'm sorry I know it's better to support your LGS but kinda hard when they are running you an extra $52 on that box of 18 packs. $20 more would have understood but $52? Yikes gamestoria don't think I'll be buying anymore if your prices are going to stay so high. read more

We love playing games and were in the area so decided to check Gamestoria out. The only other game place we have played at was in the city so we weren't sure if it was the same vibe. Honestly, love this place so far and exactly what we were hoping for! As of August 2022, they do still require masks and proof of covid vaccination (understandable since you are in close contact and handling board games or cards). It was $10 per person for free play and they have a selection of games in the back. The ones tagged with a green sticker are the ones for free play. The front has games and game pieces you can purchase, which is great because you get a 10% discount if you do the free play for that visit. In the back is where they have the tables and chairs for you to enjoy your game. The staff were very nice as well. Even though we ran into the time for the Magic tournament, we didn't have to stop and leave, which was cool. We were a group of four and had a great time. Oh and I also forgot to mention that with the $10 per person for free play, we each get one free drink OR snack, which was awesome. We will definitely come back when we are in Astoria again!! The staff seem chill and okay. There are lesser known and a few well known, more so of the first mentioned, model figues and games. There aren't that many since the front where the retail stuff is for sale. When you walk further into the back there is an aisle with tables to the left side and right side. The day I visited there were not too many people playing. I guess it was a slow day. I'm not sure how playing games in there works but there is a menu board listing prices. This place is extremely fair & friendly. I returned to MTG after 15 years. Drafted for my first time in over 17 years and Kevin was more than willing to welcome back a retired player. Yeah I lost. Many a match for weeks, but they always gave me a prize, promo, a pack or two. This store has a very strict profanity policy. It is very kid friendly. For pre-release midnight events they order pizza. I've played elsewhere in the city since finding The Geekery... and frankly... I don't like to play anywhere else. It just doesn't feel the same. The Geekery HQ has a very nice and broad selection in the front of the store. In the back tables are set up for open play and the events they've got going on. I'd imagine an online store is in the works. On black friday they are selling a BOX of Iconic Masters for 140 bucks. That's a steal! Response to their support email is personal and quick. Wendy responds with the utmost focus on her customer's happiness. I am literally heading home early the day after Thanksgiving to play here. I'm not addicted, those days are long behind me. I am however excited to play here. Win or lose its a good time! Bar across the street. Coffee and cookies 2 doors down. You're right off of Steinway in Astoria practically so there is practically everything. They have snacks in the store for cheap. Mana is supplied on Draft nights. The Geekery is one of those places I never knew I wanted, but am so glad to have found. As a quintessentially busy New York couple, we rarely have down time to relax and hang out -- but when we do, we love playing a good board game -- especially after being recently introduced to some fantastic new games out there (particularly co-op style games, i.e. Dead of Winter)! Unfortunately, we've found that these latest and greatest new games are frequently pricey, hard to find, and often have long-winded and lengthy game plays. As a time-strapped couple, it's hard to justify purchasing new games for the few times of intermittent game play it's likely to receive. Enter The Geekery HQ to save the day! At first glance, they're a specialty board game store. They have an amazing assortment of those obscure, yet critically acclaimed games you read about on the interwebs. However, beyond that store front, they provide a community for those "geeky" gamers out there, with themed game days and competitions on a regular basis -- something our current selves do not have time for, but appreciate in it's geekiness. (My husband says it takes him back to his childhood glory days). My favorite part about The Geekery is the open play area and board game rental library. They have large tables in the back of the store on which open play is welcomed, accompanied by an assorted library of ~100 games in great condition that can be played while chilling at their HQ. We'd dropped in on a Saturday evening and it cost us $5/person to hang out for as long as we wanted (which could be redeemed as store credit towards in-store purchases, rather than disappearing as a "fee"). For the record, we had much more fun, and spent way less than paying for cover and getting drinks somewhere else on a Saturday night! The staff is very game-knowledgable and not at all pushy about sales. They've also got some light snacks and beverages available for purchase if you're planning to spend a long stretch of time in the store. Another huge PLUS for these hot summer days-- they've got cold a/c blasting for those who are too cheap to turn on the a/c at home! Tip 1: check out their website for their list of available games to see if they happen to have that game you've been meaning to check out, but felt uncertain about investing in Tip 2: bring a light jacket for those out there who get cold easily I'm happy to have found this place and whole-heartedly support their mission to bring good board games to the overworked peoples of NY. Though we infrequently purchase games, it seems silly to support digital mega-corporations looking out for their bottom-line when we have this fantastic local brick and mortar shop who has gone out of its way to provide us with the hands-on experience and game play opportunities that a big internet shops cannot. They have a good selection which you can check what is available on their website. You also have the option of using that $5 fee as store credit if you buy something on the same day. A year ago my fiance and I were blessed with a darling set of twin girls, so I suddenly found myself with, like, zero time to play any long-format tabletop games (aka most of them.) I would love to see this wonderful new gaming shop and commons blossom here in Queens, and Astoria is the place to make a go of it. The Geekery is a lovely space with a good game selection at fair retail prices plus some tempting clearance items. Note that the retail board game market is such that if you don't buy used, prices vary 0 to $5, so you are really just choosing which business you want to support with your purchase. Their best feature is they've devoted more than half their space to welcoming gamers, and they genuinely welcome you. Weekdays this is free, and I like that on weekends you can pay a modest $5 per person to borrow a game and play here on the weekend: I am MORE likely to do this than if it were free because I prefer to feel I am paying a fair price for their space. Bonus: next door is the acclaimed Shuyu Ramen. My wife and I view to buy or games here now, and will definitely spend a nice weekend afternoon here with our friends for a game and some lunch. Sunday afternoon board games, oh my!! I absolutely love board games and love every chance i get to go to a friends house and play. However the Geekery HQ provides a relaxing, judge free environment to play all the games you want. It's $5/person to borrow their games and provides a different feel than sitting at someones house. We had trouble understanding a new game and one of the staff was so kind to explain it to us. This definitely brings me back to childhood days of entertainment without the ipads and computers. I've been here for a few FNM events and curious browsing when my group of friends and I are in the mood for a game to attempt for the weekend. The staff is genuinely kind and not pushy in any way to sell you something you do not want. But they're not the "apathetic, won't help you unless you're pleading type" either. They're a great bunch who want to make sure you're having a great experience in the store. Although the store does not offer as comprehensive of a board game selection as the Complete Strategist in Manhattan, it does have the latest, greatest, and most popular games on the market. The inventory seems to be very up-to-date and relevant to what's popular and classic. And if you're interested in getting into something outside of board games or need some supplies, they have a great range of D&D items starting with 5E as well as Warhammer models, paints and tools which is a great bonus. In regards to pricing, their items are very reasonable in comparison to certain stores in Manhattan and even Williamsburg. All-in-all, I have had several great experiences here with the staff and the customers. Will continue to do until I cannot. read more

He knew each game and wasn't winging it. He knew what game was best for what I was looking for and even had other games just in case I had something else in mind. I love this place!!! The people are super friendly, they treat you great and are always happy to help. I first started going in there to buy things a few weeks ago, since then I became extremely attached to a game them offer. It's so much fun to play and learn with people willing to help teach and explain the game to you. I go in there maybe twice a week just to say hi and look at any new items they might have gotten. I ask a lot of question, I'm always looking for information, and I probably drive them crazy at times but they never say anything lol. They are always happy to answer questions and help out. Geek alert!! Ok, I admit , this place is pretty cool. But I wouldn't come here alone unless I'm with my husband and his friends. I've been exposed to couple of interesting board games so this place isn't exactly like stepping into foreign lands for me. But the idea that they have tables for you to play your own games or rent one of their own is like every board gamer's fantasy. (Can you imagine the look of awe on my husband's face?) As a huge board game fan, I can say that The Geekery HQ is the best board game store in Queens. First there's the staff. Whenever I go they always have two people behind the counter (typically Wendy and King) who are friendly, knowledgeable, and overall awesome. They genuinely care about the customers and building a board game community (particularly for patrons who are locals) over the bottom line. Then there's the board game selection. They have a diverse selection of games (all at roughly MSRP) that the cool kids are playing. So instead of Monopoly you'll find titles like Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Pandemic, Dominion, Magic: The Gathering, and a variety of the best games you've never heard of. If you don't know what these games are about, that's okay! The staff can walk you through what each game is like so you can get an idea if you're a good fit for it. But beyond that they also hold free game demo sessions, as well as $5 open play sessions where you can bring your own games (and receive $5 store credit!) or borrow any title from their board game library. So if you don't know how your friends (or your wallet) would react to a traitor/deception game like Dead of Winter, just bring them here to try it out! They also host a bunch of events ranging from game demos (sometimes because they have tournaments for them, sometimes because they just feel like spreading the love for a particular title, and occasionally if they came across one from a local designer) to tournaments to self-contained D&D scenarios. The most popular events revolve around Magic: The Gathering, followed by D&D and X-Wing, along with some Dice Masters and Android: Netrunner. And FYI compared to The Uncommons, The Geekery has a friendlier and more helpful staff and is also never obscenely packed - I've been able to get a table every time I come, even if there's a Magic tournament going on.
