I wandered into this store after a dinner next door. The store is a good size, really open. The staff are super friendly and helpful. They were able to make great recommendations based on preferences and age. There's an area in the back for people to play games. The prices are decent, and the selection seems very good. Awful and INHUMANE customer service. And apparently it comes FROM THE TOP. Forget courtesy, apparently being treated like a human being is too much to ask. Imagine driving 45 min to pick up an order. This after having to call because their website was broken and not allowing pickup orders. This was after originally posting for help on the discord. Finally you arrive but slip prior to coming in (to be clear not in front of this store) and find you are bleeding. Your partner asks if the have a first aid kit and what should be a simple yes/no answer turns into bumbling words which seems like a long way to not help. Some bumbling about maybe having a bandaid without any offer to give that. And then you're told "you can just go to the pharmacy down the street." Okay, you then go up and ask for the restroom, hoping to clean off the wound and use some tissue to stop bleeding. Same person "Oh, well- we don't have our restroom open right now." My response : "so you have no restroom open and no first aid kit so are completely unprepared for if someone gets hurt in your store?" The response: "Look dude what do you want me to say - we don't have stuff for cleaning wounds, our bathroom isn't prepared, we're busy blah blah blah" At this point, I become hyper aware I'm the only black person in the store. Does that factor in- I don't know. All I know is I was being treated awfully and the rare times that happens, I start searching for why in my mind. It's obvious at this point this person is just trying to shoo me off. Eventually, I blurt out "Fine, I have a pickup order. I just want my order. " "Oh, fine." And I say "I don't want help from you though, can I get help from someone else?" I then turn to a female employee because 1) I'm a woman and at this point are getting all the signs this person does not give a eff about actually providing any help to me. The female employee comes over and is smiling apparently ready to help and maybe diffuse the situation. The individual then goes "No, I'm the owner. And I'll just refund your owner" "I don't want a refund, I just drove 45 min to get here. I just don't want your help. You've started this off mean and awful." "I don't want your money. Look, just I'm giving your a refund. Is this your order?" He then shoves the three items I purchased at me and goes "I'll give your a refund." I protest - I don't want a refund. I'm not trying to get one over on the store. What I wanted was to be treated like a human being instead of an annoyance, especially when I am in pain and trying to stop bleeding. What I want is an apology or at the least, to be helped from someone else who won't brush me off both as a customer and person in need of help. What I walked away with is knowledge that the owner of the institution is a tactless person lacking of empathy and apparently the ability to have basic things prepared at his own store like a bathroom, first aid kit, or even a clean piece of tissue. OHMARGAAWD I LOVE THIS PLACE! Stopped here to buy a gift, spent two hours checking the selection of games, eating snacks, watching people go at it with board games at the rentable tables. This place has a large selection of card games, board games, dice selection, collectables, gifts, rare cards, anything your mind can think of game wise. There is a mini cafe for snacks and drinks. The selection is small, but that's fine though so you can keep your hands tidy for playing. There are also tables in the back for games that you can sign up for and invite a large group of friends. It's an interesting concept, and had a large number of people waiting in the wings to play. I came in last weekend with my 9-year old daughter on a lark after visiting Brooklyn for the first time in years. We play board games in the family and we got a expansion, and saw a worker-placement game with great theming, and went to buy both. The staff person was nice, but then tried to upsell us on a 1000-piece puzzle, which was not something we wanted, as well as cute-looking RPG which looks great for kids. Unfortunately, we didn't have the money, and the salesperson seemed disappointed. We paid the $100+ for our products, and I even tipped the salesperson. When we were leaving, I asked if we could use the restroom. Anyone with kids knows that finding a restroom is hard sometimes. I was told there was none, and he moved along to the next person. I saw the bathroom door open, so either it was a lie, or it was closed to all but employees. I read reviews of this space on yelp and found out they do have restrooms available, with amazing reviews (spotless, clean, etc.) Ultimately the space is not particularly friendly to people with children, there are aggressive sales tactics, and there may be dishonest and harmful behavior from some staff. A disappointing experience and I won't be returning. read more

A great addition to the neighborhood, but the store caters to those who play these types of games regularly and doesn't counsel newbies well on the appropriateness of certain games "I hear it's great, should be great!" -- dude, some of these card games and board games require whole YouTube videos to figure out! I've attempted to purchase things here and simply given up when the cashier was answering 6,700 weird-ass questions from patrons who look like they have never seen the sun, and never acknowledged my presence. It's a fun place to browse, but as others have mentioned (and this is kind of depressing, but true) a sizable percentage of what they sell here can be found on Amazon for a fraction of the price. BUT nothing beats the in-person browsing experience, even if the place is tiny and cramped, and uh, smells less than fresh. read more

So, in the vast search for a copy of the expansion Mice and Mystics: The Heart of Glorm via a google search, I came across this shop 4 pages into the search. Low and behold, they have a copy! the price was amazing too! Now the initial downside, the website had it listed as instore pickup only. I'm in California! Being the person I am, I wasn't going to give up. I had a mission to get this for someone and I wasn't giving up quite yet. I sent an email out in waited for a response. A few days later, I got a response from Luis. He told me they don't ship normally, but, he would would make an exception. I am so thankful he did! The communication from him was amazing, and if I was local, I think this would be my new place to get gaming supplies and more! they even sent business cards that look like game cards! how freaking adorable is that? This is almost the opposite of every gaming store I have ever been to - in a good way! I arrived last night, the store although a bit tight on space, utilizes every inch. It is lit well and gives off a very cozy feeling. This creates a peculiar environment for a game store - it is warm and inviting. My other "gripe" was the attractive and friendly lady at the front desk. Although she was not just another pretty face, she knew a hell of a lot. Not only about MTG but about, I dare say, every game in there, which is a lot. They have a good selection. Literally I'm at a loss for words. How peculiar this place was for a game store. It is clear the owners take great care of their store - bathroom was spotless, by the way - they also really care about their customers. If you are new to gaming or bitter vet counter monkey, this place is for you. The playing area is actually larger than the merchandise area. And it's a quick train ride from the lower east side, in a very nice neighborhood. (I can't believe this place made me call Williamsburg "nice". Well, there's a first for everything.) read more

They have a solid collection of board games- not as extensive as Uncommons in Washington Square Park, but that's because this is primarily a game store. They frequently have Magic tournaments, and while I do not play Magic, the tournaments seem very well run and quite popular. This game store is very well lit and has a great selection of board games. Okay, I've been resisting going into to this place for a long time. I finally caved and am so glad that i did. Lauren and Luis are awesome and clearly love games, plus they are super knowledgeable. There is a well curated selection of smart and interesting board games for sale (Catan, Dominion, Powergrid, Abalone, Agricola, etc plus D&D and Magic stuff), so its a good place to go if you are looking for a new game. They'll ask a few questions and suggest something that's right up your alley. I'll just totally admit to being a geek and say that i bought the game of thrones board game, to which i recently became addicted while marooned in Provincetown during a rainy weekend. Stay your criticism people, Its awesome. There is a space to actually play games, including the Thursday open board game night. To accommodate working game lovers, they are open till 11pm, they have coffee and a few cookies there, as well as a huge selection of takeout/delivery menus from nearby restaurants in case you get hungry during your marathon game session. Jenga and Catch Phrase are usually the extent of my game knowledge, but even a amateur like me can appreciate this awesome game store. It's at the end of a dead end street on Grand so you have to go out of your way a bit to find it, but you won't be sorry! From board games to card games to super complicated looking role playing type games, this place has it all. There was an awesome dude with long flowing hair who seemed to know everything about every game in there. We told them what we were looking for and he gave us a bunch of great options. I noticed that they have a little back room for people to reserve to play their games. I thought that was really cute, so community focused! We ended up with this weird board game called Time Stories which was way over my head even when setting up the board, but hey - we wanted to try something new and that's what it was! This is simply the greatest gaming store that I know of. It really is 20 Sided because it's actually so much more than a store, it's a community. I started coming to their Thursday board game nights about a year ago. The environment is extremely welcoming and the gamers diverse and friendly. The staff is very helpful and the more you go to the store, the more the line blurs between business and friendship. I have made many good friends at this place, both with other customers and with the people that work there. Their selection of Magic: The Gathering, RPGs, and board games is top notch. Both staff members offered assistance in a timely fashion, and were happy to bring out more non-cubic dice from storage for my perusal. Front half of the somewhat cramped space is dedicated to store inventory (shelves packed with a decent spread of board games, card decks, and miscellaneous gaming necessities), plus tables in back. The price tags I saw were pretty decent by industry standard. Wished for more figures though. I suppose if you want a place to play Magic with other people, and the place in Midwood is too far for you to get to, then this is good enough. Although their pay-to-play Catan (even if you bring your own board) is something I've never heard of. I'd rather just join Meetup. However, if you were hoping to purchase anything, just shop at the overpriced game store in midtown. Twenty Sided had one small case of cards and fewer games for sale than I currently have in my cabinet (hint: I have 10). We headed out to Brooklyn to find the 20-sided store. Having a kid who is a big fan of Magic: The Gathering, this seemed like the perfect place to feed his obsession. It is a small place, and that is the only reason it is a 4 star place (for me). They have a lot packed into a small area, and he bought some rare cards, dice and some other "crap" for his gaming life. We even got a t-shirt with their logo. In the area beyond the merchandise sat a hundred men (all men) playing Magic: The Gathering. Jammed at long tables, they played each other with intensity and fun. It was amazing to see the variety of people playing: bankers, nerds, geeks, preps, frat guys--gay, straight, well dressed, unwashed, condo owners and fellas who live in mom's basement. They all were there, playing having fun. This scene was worth the trip, all on its own. My son enjoyed himself, spent my money and I felt like I had spent time giving him a cool experience. read more

Whether or not you end up buying a game, you'll have a fun experience in this store because there's a lot to see and learn, and the kind people who work here will genuinely spend the time with you to go over suggestions and game play. They stock games for kids and adults, and they seem to have a lot of options from games that everyone knows about and you can easily buy anywhere (i.e. Scattegories, Catan), to lesser known games, unique ones that are geared towards avid gamers (i.e. Machi Koro?) If you're into Flux, they have like, 7 different versions of that game. The store also has a private area if you want to host a party, which is great for kids or, mega nerds(!) So, we ended up buying two games that were recommended by one of the employees, or as I'd like to call them 'gaming sommeliers' - he was So friendly, and helpful, and really knew a lot about the several games that he suggested, or ones that I asked about out of interest as I perused their inventory. If you go there, I'd definitely speak to him (didn't catch his name, but he's got really long hair!). Also, rumor has it that, there is an undeniably wretched B.O. stench wafting in the atmosphere, but due to my current, unabated sinus issue and allergy, I wasn't able to pick up any foul odors. Yay, me! (Listen, I'm sure the place doesn't smell bad at all, until you breach the private area and you enter the pit of magic the gathering players doing their thing in the apex of summer, with a broken A/C situation). read more

I've been coming here on and off for a while now, and it's always been a great experience. No matter how busy they are (and it gets busy), someone will always take the time to patiently talk to me about whatever it is, whether it be a new set of magic cards or a new board game, etc. They're super inviting and friendly people, and genuinely want to share their love of games/magic with anyone who walks through that door. I once randomly walked passed here on a date once, and we decided to go inside. They gave us brand new, unopened decks to play with so I could show my date how to play MTG and play a few games. This is a really charming little game shop. Everyone who works here is passionate about games - the first time I wandered in I asked what I needed to get started playing D&D. Jocko (not sure of the spelling but that's an A+ name) got me started with the essentials and made no effort to sell me stuff I didn't need. I've since been coming back once a week to play D&D. The crowd is extremely friendly and the DMs tow the line between epic storytelling and irreverent non sequiturs. Basically it's awesome. This tucked-away gaming store is sometimes hard to find, but well worth it when you do! It's between Meeker and Leonard (on Meeker it's between Union Pool and Brooklyn Kitchen), and the entrance is underneath the stairs. Look for the twenty sided dice painted on the wall! They have tons of space to spread out and play games, and are really friendly and accepting of everyone. Although there are games for hardcore gamers (they run a lot of Magic the Gathering tournaments and have a Roleplaying Game library!), they also have scrabble and monopoly and everything between. My girlfriend and I just had dinner at EMMY squared and just when we thought it couldn't get any better, THIS amazing spot happened to be right next door! We walked by and saw a whole bunch of cool things from the outside, and as soon as we walked in, we were stuck lol. They've got all sorts of board games, I can't even describe how much of a variety they have. They also sell little knick knacks, wacky versions of office supplies, gaming cards, and I believe you can even play some of the board games in-house. The cashier was very knowledgable about everything! She mentioned that her specialty was board games so if we had any questions about anything, she would know. Moments later, we found multiple expansion packs for one of our favorite board games, "Pandemic" which had about 4 expansions. I gotta tell you, she was not joking about board games being her specialty! She described each expansion pack so well we ended up getting one of them lol. My girlfriend also purchased some cool zodiac cards for a friend, and I ended up buying a cool 4-in-1 (screwdriver, ruler, balance,) pen and a journal that I've used every day since the purchase. Upon hearing the name, my little nerd heart did backflips of joy. I immediately rushed over, only to find a store that has essentially no connection to the 20 sided die they named themselves after. The store itself was cram-jammed to the rafters full of very, very sweaty guys playing Magic.: The Gathering. We found board games and card games galore, and enough Magic cards to choke a mule. There were, however, no RPG books that I saw anywhere. Flagrant false advertising. It's great if you like Magic: The Gathering and the overpowering stench of a High School wrestling mat. However, for what they had available, good selection. The board games were not anything you couldn't find at The Compleat Strategist, but being as they're the only store anything like this on the L train, it's worth a visit. If you have the time to go to Manhattan, go to Compleat Strategist instead. read more

I was a regular customer at this store several years ago, but I will never go back. During a Magic event, I got into an argument with another customer outside the store on the sidewalk between rounds. The other customer complained to the store owners, and I tried to mitigate matters by apologizing. The owners of Twenty Sided responded to my apology by telling me that if I ever said anything like that again, I would be banned from the store. I had shopped there for more than a year and played many events there, and he did not even think of asking for my side of the story. Just threatened to ban me. Later that same day, the customer's boyfriend pulled me out of a round and verbally threatened me in an effort to make me apologize. I am a small woman who stands less than 5 feet tall. The boyfriend wasn't big, but he was taller than me and heavier than me. I had to talk him down myself to get him to leave the store. The store owners did nothing to help. It was the worst interaction I'd ever had in over 5 years of playing Magic at different stores throughout the city, and it caused me to stop coming to Twenty Sided and to stop playing Magic entirely. All, don't bother going to this store for events. Don't bother building up goodwill with the owners. It isn't valued. read more

I was looking for a relaxed place to play Magic and the Twenty Sided Store is exactly that. The players are mostly in their 20s and 30s and there is a nice mix of casual and serious players. The other players are helpful and they've really helped me improve my game. Considering my friend and I had just recently gotten into it, it was a bit exciting, considering they even had random sets of cards for a cheap price lining the wall. Oh I was excited.
