Great place, great people. Family owned and a fantastic place for collectors. I enjoy stopping by during events and otherwise.

Truth be told if you were not looking for this place you would risk missing it as its not on the main thoroughfare of the Bay Ridge avenue and instead just a few stores up the block. Its a small shop but stockpiled around the place up to the ceiling with gaming systems and previously owned cartridges of an endless list of popular games. There are likely even some unpopular ones that are now cult favorites for some reason. I noticed PS2 and PS3 items, along with Nintendo, XBox and many more. Not only can you find the games but they also have a stockpile of the actual systems and controllers on display so if you broke something you might want to get over there. Price wise I'd have to say that they can be all over the place because they are not your conventional shop with a new stock coming in from a distributor every day. They seem focused on the used games and systems so the inventory varies and fluctuates. There are games that are more rare than some others and some items might be in a little less than perfect condition based on use and that is bound to be the case with places like this. Truth be told, I find its better to deal with a slightly higher figure for something you've been looking for forever rather than risking someone else snagging it up while you opine the decision. While they primarily focus on video games for most gaming systems, they do have a stockpile of Funko Pops, some action figures, and a couple of boxes of old comic books all available for assorted prices. Again its based on the stock and the rarity if anything. I did see a stock of hats and billfolds and those are completely new along with a few cork boards of shiny pins which are also new. If you have a gamer geek in your family they should be brought here because I think they'd find something they need or wanted to have for awhile. I've seen them take trades for store credit but outside of that I am not sure how they deal with the walk ins with piles of games, comics or toys. Recommended. read more

I came back and took more pictures. He had a lot more than the last time I came. This time, the place was busier. It took me way back...to the point where I felt old. There were youngins in there. Didn't know much about "those times". All good! I was in my zone just reminiscing. I respect the owner. He's about the same age as I am, friendly, and helpful. If he didnt have what you were looking for, he'd make sure he'd have it for next time. I still have all my old consoles. I didnt have the heart to get rid of them or trade them in. His store looks like my bedroom, to be honest. And that's sorta what drew me in. I was just mesmerized. He even had perler bead 8-bit art all over the place! Just visit the place! Even though its small, its tons of fun. If you're an 80s baby and grew up in the 90s, you'll definitely have a blast here. read more

I'd much rather buy old video games at this store than any of the couple others in the city that charge way more and are very unfriendly to customers. the store is fairly small with a decent selection of preowned older games. They have lots of rare titles as well as common cartridges as well. Staff is knowledgable and they really love their games. Prices are about average to above average but they have to be able to pay the rent. something you can get on fleabay you can get here for about $5-10 more. titles are constantly changing and it really depends on supply and demand. Amazing selection of used, retro, and vintage video games and consoles, and amazing customer service and friendly staff! The first time I went there I spent $100+ on a Wii, controllers, and some games, and the employee (probably owner- he knew the inventory of his store like the back of his hand) gave me a free upgrade to a better controller simply because it was my first time in the store. Recently I was there, asked for Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness, and he said that they just got a new copy in but they hadn't tested it to see if it works yet. I said I'd come back another day, but he was already up and running around to get it tested to I could walk away with it that day. Love this place, it comes highly recommended. read more

I really love the staff here. They are the most honest, helpful, and friendly people I have ever met in this gaming industry. They will even recommend a competitor if they do not have the game you are looking for - that's unheard of in this day and age. We love to come here on a Sunday afternoon to just browse the aisle and see what retro games they have in, or if we could trade anything. It's run by people who show their bleeding passion for the medium in every square inch of their humble little shop. I myself live in Brooklyn, and building a vintage gaming collection was difficult and expensive in these parts until this place showed up just weeks ago. Generally, those interested in buying old games have three options: online, retro game stores, or garage sales. In NYC, garage sales are about as common as unicorns riding motorcycles, and the ability to walk into a store looking for retro games is very limited. Your only other option is online auction markets like Amazon and eBay - where retro gaming prices have skyrocketed. Unlike the few other NYC retro gaming stores, Gotham City gives you polite customer service, a huge and very fairly-priced selection, and a guarantee on your purchases. Pretty nice group of guys around here. They don't have the best prices around, somewhat around ebay prices. But it's always nice to support a local retro gaming store. They're always getting new stuff in, so it's nice to check it out every month or so and see if I can pick up any hidden gems. If you don't have time for that they have a Facebook and instagram page where you can keep up with their latest pickups. I completely recommend them, and it's always a great place to stop by if you're starting out a retro gaming collection. read more

Came across this store in yelp and decided to give it a look. When it comes to being friendly, professional and helpful this place has it. The store has current games, retro games and accessories. If they don't have it they will try to get it for you. The best part has to be the prices. I personally collect retro NES games and these prices are good. Before you go to any other retro store in NYC, I recommend a quick look. You may find what your looking for here at a better price. The only thing I can say that isn't favorable about the store is the space. The store is a little small which can limit the inventory and amount of people at once. However, you should ask if your looking for a particular game, accessory or system. They have more in storage and have to cycle through inventory due to space. Also this doesn't deter them from holding game tournaments. So this store already does more then your average GameStop. So give it a look and see if you can avoid a long trip or higher prices from a competitor. read more

I love this place, it's such a great addition to the neighborhood! Selection is awesome - there are tons of retro games, but there are also a lot of fun general geek flair, like perler art, magnets, and other things you'd normally find at conventions. The best thing about this place is the friendly vibe, though. The owner is really friendly, and works hard to make the shop a hangout place, with video game tournaments on the weekends. It's nice to see a lot of young kids playing around and hanging out there, it's a place I wish I could have had at that age! read more

I found out about this place when I was calling local game shop's to see if they had Nintendo Dogs+Cats for my birthday and I looked them up and I found out they were a retro game shop. I got so excited about that, that I decided to go their last Sunday and they ended up being as awesome as I thought they were. Probably the best videogame store in NYC I'm not kidding. Better than VGNY. For one, Gotham City Games is far cleaner, less cramped, and better organized. It can't beat VGNY's sheer selection but if you're looking for mainline stuff-- NES, SNES, Genesis, Playstation, ect-- It is miles above anything else just in terms of sheer usability. The staff is incredibly cool, greet you the moment you walk in the door, are engaged with their clients and know their stuff. Terrific people. Just opened in Bay Ridge! They have a good selection of SNES games for between $15 and $25, which is pretty much what you can find on ebay and cheaper than Amazon. The dudes showed me how to clean the cartridges (Windex, Q-tips). There was a Smash Bros tourney going on with some potty-mouthed pre-teens up front. My girlfriend got me an NES from Gotham City Games over a year ago. She had a wonderful experience with the service at the store and now I have the gaming system I always wanted. It only took 30 years to get it. So far I have around 100 games for NES, SNES, N64 and Various Gameboy and Sony handheld systems. I can't wait to continue my collection here. i first delt with them at comic con and thats what made me check out the store. first of all the retro prices are veryy reasonable compared to other places ive been in ny especially manhattan. the people inside the store were also very nice and greeted me and asked if i needed help right away. i never felt rushed or pressured like in other retro game stores. i will def be shopping here again. read more

Their prices are better and the staff is actually helpful. I've been there twice already and am sure to become a regular. It's great to have a retro video game store in Brooklyn. Ok so i bought two different systems from this store and everything was great!! To be specific.. I purchased a obviously used Sega Dreamcast and a used Nintendo GameCube. I bought them about a month ago and everything still works great!! Along with that purchase.. I bought a few games and a memory card for each system... So In about a week or so I went back.. I mean.. Why not, right? I've spent over $200 there and Everything's went well so far. I purchased super smash bros Melee for the GameCube.. Now if you know anything about retro games.. You know SSBM is about a $50-$60 game! I went home.. Popped it in my GameCube.. And it read.. "This game cannot be read... Etc. so I cleaned the disk off.. And it played.. But than it would just stop working right in the middle of gameplay! This happened over and over again. Very unreliable! So I go back to the store and return it for an exchange.. Exchanged it for super Mario sunshine and pokemon colosseum And paid about a $10 difference between prices.. Went home to find out, super Mario sunshine does not work at all!! No matter how much I clean the disk!! At this point I'm fed up.. I just go back AGAIN.. The next day and exchange it back for the original super smash bros melee because at least I know that game works.. At times! At least I know what this product brings! I didn't want to exchange again.. For another mystery of a game that might or might not work! This store needs to check there products before they sell them!! They lost me as a customer for sure! A $5 or even $15 pre owned game that doesn't work.. Is understandable... But a$30 and even $60 game that doesn't work properly.. Is completely unacceptable!!! read more
