This is my 2nd review of a fantastic eatery. The reason for the lower mark is as follows: (server is Mr. M.) Dinner for 2 with reservation at 8:00pm. We arrived at 8 and were promptly seated. When we were ordering, my lady asked for lasagna (she's vegetarian). Server, "Oh I'm sorry, I just sold my last lasagna." [Out-of-item #1] [Note to server: You don't say "we just sold our last lasagna..." that did not make us feel any better... :( And there is no "I" ...it's "we"... unless of course he's the owner.] She had been looking forward to the lasagna ever since we made the reservations a week prior, and was upset, but she found an alternative (see below). I ordered the cajun seafood pasta. As I was eating, I noticed there were no pieces of Cod as was described in the menu. I called the same server over... "Oh, we ran out of fish, so the chef substituted extra shrimp and scallops. Really? I would have ordered the plank-salmon had I known when I was placing my order. [Out-of-item #2] As we were ordering desert, my lady asked for the Creme Brûlée. Same server: "we're all out of that." [Out-of-item #3] So: without lecturing too much... I realize planning meal counts is a challenge for a small establishment, BUT if a you're out of an item, either put it on your board to be seen as customers enter (they had a board), or the server MUST tell customers when they're seated of any items not available. Expectations need to be set early and appropriately. Server needs to be sent back to server school. Well... we will certainly be back since the food is indeed phenomenal. And the guitar jazz duo was once again amazing. We hope policies will be adjusted. Upon a late night coming from a hike, we looked for something near our hotel that was still open... and we're glad Cafe Paradisio was! Let me the paint the picture. Warm evening, well-lit cafe with a chef and a hostess jollily chatting on the outside step. They notice us, greet us, and open the door welcoming us inside. We step in, where we are led to a table for two, as we notice how great the food looks for the surrounding diners. I'm excited that this looks very promising, especially when we went from not having a place to eat to having a really nice meal to close out the night. The waiter approaches - very nice man with poise and a pleasant charm - and after a quick run through the menu, we selected our choices - chicken marsala and Zen Paradisio tofu salad. When the food came, everything looked great. The sauce for the marsala was different than standard, but it was really really tasty. The chicken itself was a little overcooked, but not bad still. The Zen Paradisio tofu itself was okay (though the order-ee liked it) - it came with three sauces that I can't name, but the presentation of it was superb. On the pricey side for Redding. It's the sort of place where the fish comes by itself on the plate and you order a salad separately. Nonetheless, very good all the way through the meal. My map app took me the wrong way down Yuba street; this restaurant is small, but look for the warm, inviting space with full tables and bustling waitstaff. I liked how intimate and cozy it was. We sat in the corner and were able to watch everything coming and going to the kitchen. My dad didn't like the wooden bench built into the corder because the backrest hit him at an uncomfortable angle, but when you're eating you're not leaning against that part anyway. Go ahead and order a bottle of wine, I trust the glass pours were adequate, however, the shape of the glass was deceptive so I felt like we didn't get enough. Green grapes come out complimentary while you wait for your food. My dad ordered a beet salad that I was incredibly jealous of. Be adventurous, get the beet salad that you wouldn't normally make at home. The Caesar was satisfactory. My barbeque salmon with pineapple salsa was perfect; cooked nicely, presented prettily, and oh-so-tasty. My dad had Ahi with some sort of wasabi cream sauce that he wouldn't even share, so that must have been great as well. Other tempting things on the menu: chicken marsala, lasagna (I saw a serving of this go by and WOW!), steak medallions. Not sure what the theme is, but there's a little bit of everything. Staff was attentive and friendly. They didn't glower at me when I managed to somehow knock over a wine rack trying to climb out of the corner bench seat. We just celebrated our 50 th wedding anniversary with a wonderful evening and delicious dinner at Cafe Paradisio. I had the Beef Cheek on Rissotto and my husband had the heavenly scallops. The Tuscan soup was fantastic! We've had many very good meals, in many locations. Amber, our waitress was delightful amd made a point of calling us by name. Service was okay. Walked in to an empty restaurant and expected to be seated relatively quickly, but there was no front of house staff. The food was tasty but not worth the price. I was having a difficult Tuesday; all the smoke from wildfires choking me from the moment I woke up. However, life must go on, and my stomach reminded me it still needed stoking. It was about 1:30 and I hadn't eaten anything, so in-between errands I spied a small sign as I pulled into a parking spot off of Pine. Cafe Paradisio... hey I haven't tried that place yet and it reminded me of a GREAT movie, Cinema Paradisio. Life is supposed to be experienced, and I was quite hungry, so I popped in. Wow. This place is lined with local artists' work hanging along each wall. Not a huge place in size, but there is an aura and I felt a sweet surge of energy the moment I entered. The hostess / server greeted me with a beautiful smile and pleasant conversation as I made my way to the back of the room. Sat down at the bar.. It was JUST me so why take up table space. Further conversation with the lovely lady and briefly with the chef as he scurried about prepping things, I learned more about downtown Redding's best kept secret. For 6 years Cafe Paradisio has been delighting the lucky and those in the know with "Italian tinted" California Cuisine taste sensations. I was rewarded with the fantastic ZEN BOWL that features a Cajun seared Ahi floating among FRESH squash, zucchini, cabbage,bell pepper, carrot and red onion put to bed on a mat of Jasmine rice and seasoned with a very nice dressing. I added a small school of grilled shrimp, and fell into a comfortable numb of relaxation and satisfaction as my tastebuds exploded with exuberance. The little voice in my head quickly spoke up with congratulations for selecting such a beautiful meal and dining experience. As I took my time savoring each forkful, I returned my focus to the art gallery featuring local talent on each wall. Now my mind; my body, my heart, were all pulsing with a warm, glowing vibration. I completely enjoyed my small adventure, from the moment I drifted into Cafe Paradisio on thru to the final morsel. Only been here a couple times but both time were outstanding. The menu has something for every taste and it's all delicious. My friend and I shared the baked Brie platter which is a must try! It was truly delicious. For dinner I had the lasagna and added on meat balls. It was enough for at least 2 full meals. It was a perfect execution of a classic dish. My friend had the pulled pork gnocchi which she let me try and the pork was crisp flavorful perfection. The next time I went I got the pulled pork gnocchi to go because the bite I had was not enough. I can't wait to try the braised short rib next time! When I ate there we had sat at the bar. The name of the lovely women who served us is not coming to mind unfortunately, however her service was very memorable. She was very friendly and attentive with out being over bearing or interrupting my friend and I catching up. I always ask way to many questions and she didn't seem at all annoyed or trying to rush me. We ordered the Brie appetizer which was the only shining star. The braised short ribs were covered in an awful tasting gravy. I couldn't eat it and had to send it back. The clams in a tomato white wine butter sauce were not much better. It tasted like spaghetti sauce poured over clams. We were the only people there which in hine sight was probably for good reason. Very personable and connected with all three generations of our dinner party. Food and wine was great. Had the scallops and they were delish! Super hungry and still optimistic, we ordered our options from set menu 20 minutes later. Our server (Claire) was very friendly but not attentive. We saw her three times all night... Our main courses didn't arrive until 9:15, a full 35 minutes after our soup/appetizer had been devoured... My Medium steak was very Rare, but I didn't want to send it back, for fear it would be another 30 minutes. Since they had run out of Filet Mignon, we had the New York. It was tasteless. The bright spot: the amazing Clam Chowder and Raspberry Trifle. We hope this was just a case of being overwhelmed and underprepared. read more

Would give 3.5 stars if possible. They have 3 outdoor tables and we're very accommodating in pushing 2 together for us to eat outdoors. The server was very friendly, but I was surprised to not see her or any indoor patrons wearing masks. I understand that they are still in the reopening stage of the pandemic, but that still came as a huge surprise, as every other place we saw had only outdoor dining and a mask policy. Have never been treated so rudely by a restaurant. My husband & I decided to celebrate Valentine's Day early by going out. I specifically chose CP bcuz I like to support local restaurants. I made a reservation 5 days in advance & even confirmed, that we were coming. We decided to dress up & make a night of it. We arrived @ the restaurant 5 min early. There were 2 tables available. A 2 top, very small right by the front door w/ awkward seating & a 4 top in a good position. The waiter came to tell us that they were clearing the 2 top for us. I told him that that wasn't going to work for us. He told us that the 4 top was for a couple that had requested to be near the band. They came in after us & were promptly seated. We were essentially told, take it or leave it. We left & had a nice dinner elsewhere. The sad part is right b4 Covid hit last year, I had lunch @ CP & knowing they were going to close I bought a $100 gift certificate to use @ a later date, to help them out. I know both my husband & I will not ever eat there again, & I'm requesting my $ back from the gift certificate. We are thoroughly disgusted the way we were treated. Shame. I don't get it. For starters, here's the beer menu: Asahi, Corona, Dos Equis, Guinness, Heineken. It's like a laundry list of shitty-to-mediocre mass-brewed international beers. Is this a grand statement of some kind? A boldly drawn line in the sand? A declaration of intentions? "We're cosmopolitan and international, but also kind of proletarian. We're not into that 'craft brew' or 'locally sourced' trendiod shit." Or is it just pedestrian, lame taste in beers? My Caesar salad with grilled chicken answered the question for me. Everything about the salad screamed, "Unloaded from a Sysco Foods truck earlier this week." Right down to the obviously mass-produced, every-piece-exactly-the-same croutons. Same with my wife's meal -- all of it looking straight out of containers, mixed up, and served. Both her salmon and my chicken were overcooked and on the dry side. Cafe Paradisio isn't horrible -- the place is clean, the service is earnest, and the food is merely blah, bordering on cafeteria fare, but not inedible. But all of these 5-star reviews? What is with Yelp removing most of Cafe Paradisio's reviews? Did they not pay their yelp shakedown money.... errr purchase advertising? This is a tentative 5 star review. I really like what they are doing here and I really like the food and ambiance. I'm not totally sure if they are 5 star worthy yet, but Redding needs more places like this. I think it's probably mostly 4 star food and 4 star service mixed in with some 5 star offerings and some 2/3 star offerings. But the prices are very modest and that's giving them the 5 star clincher along with the aforementioned need for less shitty chain restaurants in Redding. Dinner dishes I've ordered myself have been ahi tuna with capers and lemon sauce and the Zen Paradisio bowl. I gotta say, while the Ahi was cooked perfectly, I made the the wrong choice with the sauce and should have gone with the cajun which apparently is great. Ahi was fresh and perfectly cooked. The roasted red potatoes could have used more seasoning, but were decent. The zen paradisio bowl was tasty, light and healthy. Nothing fancy, just perfectly sauteed veggies with nice fluffy basmati rice. It had a side tray of 4 tasty housemade dressings to pour over it. that tied it all well, and I like that they give you multiple flavors and enough of each to pour all over if you want. I have also sampled other people's dishes. The Lasagna with meat sauce was very rich and tasty. I'm a fan, and will probably order it for myself in an upcoming visit. The baked salmon with thai coconut curry was excellent. Perfectly cooked, nice and fresh salmon, great flavors. The half roast of chicken, I have to be honest, that I was not very impressed with. Of the 4 or 5 bites I had, 3 of them seemed a little too dry, and I guess it's just me, but nothing was really done with flavor. I'm not sure if it was seasoned or not. It didn't really taste like it. I would have gone with the mushroom gravy. The person who ordered it did like it though. The A La Mode brownie was huge. It might have been a couple days old as it wasn't totally moist, but it was rich in flavor and the ice cream took care of the lack of moistness. I'll get it again. The wine list is excellent and well priced. Mouton Cadet is the house wine and at only $16 a bottle your not paying much more than what it costs at the store. It's a value Bordeaux. Personally, I feel it needs time to breathe. If I drank it at home, I would decant it for a minimum 45 minutes and probably get most benefit from an hour or 2 before really drinking it . Perhaps getting a glass from an already-opened bottle is your best bet with it. The dining interiors has an intimate, classy but also casual atmosphere. The service while both times has been a little inexperienced has been pretty good. I'm not expecting French Laundry for these prices. So that about sums it up. It's good, quality, home cooking, and worthy of respect. The price makes it very hard to not give 5 stars. I'm looking forward to trying more things on the menu and we'll see if the 5 stars holds up. read more

Long review so here is the bottom line: noisy, very small portions, high prices, extra charges. After reading a glowing review in the Record Searchlight, we decided to give Cafe Paradisio a try. Wow, were we disappointed. First off, the restaurant is in a very small space which leads to a very noisy environment. Add live music and carrying a conversation with the person across the table becomes impossible. After reviewing the menu, I decided on the lasagne only to be told that they had run out. How do you run out of a main menu item at 6:30 on a Saturday when dinner service has pretty much just started? As a second choice, I settled on the Hawaiian Pork Tenderloin. Presentation was good as was the flavor. The biggest disappointment was that there was a single medallion of pork. For size comparison think of the small bars of soap you get at a hotel. That's it, one small piece with a $25 price tag attached. Very poor value for what you get. This is not New York or haute cuisine. And this does not stand alone. I have spoken with others in our group and they all felt that the portions were very small and prices way too high. Since we were a party of 8, they automatically talked on a 20% gratuity. Seriously? If you want 20%, the food and service needs to be seriously improved. Also, according to IRS rules, since the restaurant is adding the "gratuity" it is considered a service charge and does not count towards gratuities given to staff that are voluntarily added by the patron. If any of the service charge is distributed to the employees, it counts as wages and not tips. So what is the reason to add the charge except greed by the owner? Is it any harder to serve a table of eight as compared to two tables of four? I would say no. One last thought. There were five people working the restaurant that night. Three were front of house staff with the other two being the chef and his assistant. Neither the chef or assistant were wearing caps, hats, or anything else to contain their hair (CA Health and Safety code 113969). I wonder how many other HSC codes they ignore. Long review but as you can guess we will not be returning. read more
