This was my favorite bar to visit in Ensenada. For the last year, the prices were wonderful. Today, I left the bar with six beers bought. The bill was $23 dollars. Last time I was here (two weeks ago), we paid almost the same price for 11 beers. My girlfriend, who lives in Tijuana, says we were ripped off. I won't be coming back if they are going to con American visitors into paying double for beer. You should think about who you are going to charge extra, especially when they have been visiting every two weeks for the last year. read more

I wish Yelp would have the below one star ratings, because this place is more like a minus 5 (-5) stars. MAJOR TOURIST TRAP, especially people that go on cruises to Mexico have to go to this place. It is a waste of money, so I am WARNING!!!!!!!! You. The food is well below average for bar food, they DO NOT serve authentic Mexican food here, and we tried the nachos so a way to describe this dish is runny fake cheese from a jar or some kind of dispenser and mystery meat on top of cold chips. We also tried the margaritas, although very large in size, those were terrible as well, some kind of mix with no alcohol in it, pretty pathetic......... They play very loud music to lure tourists to go in for a big disappointment. It is NOT a good place to bring your kids! or your family for that matter... the entertainment can get pretty awkward at times Ordered one of their frozen drinks and didn't taste any alcohol at all. Our tour guide recommended that we have closed tabs because it's risky to leave an open tab in this area. We asked the waiter for our bill after the first drink and he seemed to be annoyed. Came here this past weekend with friends for a bachelor & bachelorette party and had a blast! We came both friday & saturday night. Got there pretty late both nights and still had some tables so thats a plus. Margaritas are super big and not sooo pricey. (1 for $6.50 and 2 for $10). Though when my bf ordered 2 margaritas 20 minutes after me they charged him $13.. All good because they are super tasty but kind of weird. There are definitely bars around that sell just as good margaritas for way cheaper. I mean we're in mexico right? We also ordered buckets of beer all night which was so worth it because there was a lot of us and it was cheaper in bulk. We also tried some shots at this mini bar right in the middle. The bar tender puts on a show for everyone with those fire shots. The second night he remembered me & gave me 2 free shots!! (thank you again) :) During the day it was pretty chill. Night time was when it was packed and they have 3 different sections. We stuck to the far right one until we got sick of their music and went to the left side. Not sure why some people are rating this place so poorly... My experience here was nothing short of fun and entertaining. Like most, I came here from a cruise ship on one of the stops. Having never really been to this city, I got some recommendations from others. The general consensus was to give this place a try, and I'm happy I did. I understand the concerns of authenticity, as this is really quite a touristy spot, however, I don't think that takes away from the all around experience. The food here was cheap and excellent. Some employee (clearly authentic and Mexican) made guacamole from scratch right in front of us. It was to die for. The nachos and tacos were also delicious. The service was on point, but the ambiance was what really impressed me about this place. My friends and I were all individually chosen to get up on stage, and the worker guy poured tequila down our throats and proceeded to flip us upside down and shake us. This was really a party-starter. From there, we met some locals, and took shots of alcohol that were on fire from the back bar! That was a very interesting, yet amazing experience. The locals were nice and genuine. I will definitely come back next time I'm in the area! This is the perfect party spot. read more

Like a lot of people here, we were on the Carnival Cruise and went on their "bar hopping tour" and one of the stops was "Papas & Beer." First of, drinks are weak -- barely any alcohol. The food is just OK but I would avoid eating anywhere in Ensenada! Lastly, the bar staff are super shady. I tried to pay with my credit card and they tried to tell me it was "declined." The same card I had used in the MUCH BETTER bar across the street 30 minutes ago. Gave them another card and guess what, that was "declined" too. I carried little cash on me so I was kind of stuck. The bartender said, "let me try another machine," and it miraculously worked. I think they wanted my American dollars; I'm guessing their credit card machine credits them in pesos. Avoid this classic tourist trap; there are other bars in town with better service, stronger drinks, and honest staff. read more

I have been coming here for years, even before I was allowed to drink. I have taken many weekend cruises that stop in Ensenada and Papas and Beer never disappoints. Yes, it is more expensive than other places you can go but the crowd and bar tenders are a lot more fun. Reuben always interacts with us and makes sure that we have an amazing time. Coming here for the drinks and the crowd is always something to look forward to and the only reason I still get off the ship in Ensenada. Just be ready for shots and to be flipped upside down. I am a fan of Papas and Beer. It's the cleanest (and most Americanized) place in Ensenada. We did a fair amount of walking around, stopped in to many more "authentic" places, but honestly, sometimes you just get worn out by all the Ensenada shenanigans. Chiclets, Viagra, Retin-A, leather wallets, silver jewelry....it's kind of nice to sit down somewhere that seems like you're less likely to get dysentary. Yes, there's drunk girls there that get all shit-faced and make out on the bar and do body shots and stuff like that. We saw 2, and it was hilarious when they then received their bill for all the shots...they apparently thought the shots would be free since they were being all slutty about it. Spring break is way worse than the time of year we were here (early October). It's in a new building, it used to be a lot dirtier and darker, more like Hussong's still is. But the new location is actually really nice. Across the street from where it used to be, you can't miss it. We are going to be in Ensenada again at the end of January, and we will definitely go back into Papas and Beer. read more

Came here on a Monday twice, first at 5pm to have dinner then at 8:30pm for open bar/karaoke. 5pm visit- service wasn't that great considering no one was really there. However the food tasted great even though we ordered a different burrito. 8:30pm visit- for $5 dollars it was open bar 8-11pm but the drinks were not strong at all. After 8 drinks I had a slight buzz. I will say bartenders were very nice. Did not enjoy the music selection, too much band, it was putting me to sleep. Last night, came hoping to go to the club/dance area. We let a promoter take us up saying it would be free cover charge. He sat us down at the restaurant & then took are orders for some drinks. It wasn't very busy at the restaurant. And we assumed we were supposed to spend money at the restaurant to then get free cover at the club reversion. Well we ask are "host" to take us over to the club he said yes and took us. Put us in the ID & pay line and said "I will meet you guys on the other side". Once they asked us each to pay $20 to get in, we told them a guy working here said he get us in for free, the bouncers just shook he head no and said we had to pay. Paying wasn't a big deal for us. I was so excited to visit this bar for the first time this last weekend for spring break, when we finally got to Papas and Beer the waiter was not nice at all. We sat at the outside bar and he said that in order for him to serve us we NEEDED to buy a bucket of 10 beers for $40? We thought he was joking and let him know we wanted to start off with a beer each, he said "I can't have you guys sitting here without a bucket" and gave us an upset look and walked away! Never has this happened to me. I was appalled and got up and left! We decided to go to the bar across the street called LA GALLERIA. Amazing service!! They on the other hand were very attentive and had a deal of a bucket of beer AND 10 tequila shots for $35!!! We ended up spending about 2 hours there and had a blast!! We looked over to Papas and Beer where the crowd looked boring!! So glad we made the decision to leave and go across the street to where customer service matters!! Our first night in Ensenada, my boyfriend and I were a bit lost and a little nervous about driving around an unfamiliar area at nightfall. We chose to stop here for dinner to get our bearings and rest while we figured out a plan. The entire street was deserted​ and there were proprietors from different restaurants​ beckoning in the few tourists that were wandering the streets. When we arrived, we were the only people in the entire restaurant​. The atmosphere was decidedly​ american and the menu refelcted that both in options and in price. We ended up ordering a pizza and a burrito and paying like $28 with tip. Overall, ​it was okay food but not as good as you'd get in the states. Had a not so good experience as their server for the night club wanted to force us to pay for a table reserved for bottle service... which in this same exact place I had already had a problem with the tequila bottle being altered as the bottle had a broken seal and was previously opened adding to Laura C review as I was with her topic for another day... We 5 of us, wanted a table and tried to force a bottle on us and we did not want to drink tequila bc of known fact that this place alters their bottles...so after few minutes and the server loosing customers for arguing w us he told us to buy the equivalent of beer instead of bottle...that's what we explained to him we would do and he wouldn't have it. Server finally gave in, understood us and after $1500 pesos and 3 buckets of 10 beers we enjoyed the music. Most of the times servers trys to get one up on you and ur family because they assume your drunk or from the states and have money to blow. Sorry not this time I was here to be w family, to enjoy the music and on budget. For the Gerente or Manager I'm not going to assume that you know about the bottles being altered but hopefully this will get to you in time and you do something of this problem; because even though your a business in Mexico, when the Mexican ppl start standing up to you for this problem you will have some serious issues. read more

I'm no longer 18 so I don't see the hype in this place. I had a horrible experience with service and their drink quality. First, the place was empty and we were ignored for the first 15 minutes. We moved the bar so that we can get quicker drinks, the bartenders ignored us. Finally, after flagging them down, someone came by and made the worst margarita I have ever had. I'm not a bartender but I can make a better drink blindfolded. The main ingredient in my margarita on the rocks was 7-up. I never knew margarita to be bubbly and tasting like 7-up. I asked them to fix it, the added more tequila and 7-up (used the soda gun) and it came out tasting no different. It's shocking that in Mexico, in a popular bar like this, the bartender didn't know how to make a proper margarita. We left...didn't want to waste another breath asking them to remake it. read more

Good atmosphere. The music was my jam, from Selena to don Omar to Elvis Crespo. Drinks however were not my fav. I ordered a drink that the bartender recommended. It had tamarind pineapple and idk what else. It was good but it tasted extremely watered down. So I asked for an extra shot of tequila. For $6 that drink was not worth it and $2 the extra shot, no. Drinks were a bit overpriced for me, in terms of the quality. 4 stars for the precious man that makes the homemade guac at your table. He is independent of the restaurant and worth every penny! The drinks are pretty good. Its very loud and a lot of drunk under aged kids. That being said not much to do in Ensenada when your in port there so its a good place to spend some time. Entertaining if nothing else. I came here during my cruise to ensenada because everyone who comes to ensenada has to come by papas & beer. first off, THEY HAVE WIFI AND IT'S FAST. That's awesome for people who don't have roaming or if the roaming is super slow (like t-mobile). We ordered some shots of tequila, strawberry margarita, and carne asada fries. I was a little disappointed by the prices because it was pretty similar to the prices they charge in california. Apparently, we came during the tourist time though so their prices are more expensive than usual. I mean I get it-- but still maybe not the best thing to advertise. The strawberry margarita was like juice- delicious but I wondered how much alcohol was actually in it considering it was supposed to be 2 shots. If you want the sketchiest experience possible in Ensenada, this place is for you. Went with a bachelor party and 3 girls we met on the cruise ship. Similar to other reviewers' stories, 3 of the "staff/security" started blowing a whistle, came and physically pulled the girls, (one who clearly didn't want to go), up on this little stage where they were flipped upside down so their dresses fell around their necks revealing everything but what was covered by the underwear they were wearing, and were pretty forcefully manhandled. Then the 3 staff members, physically restraining them while standing behind them doing all this, proceeded to pour cheap Jose Cuervo on their chests and invited guys up to lick it off. Then, the staff guys who essentially molested these girls, tried to charge us some insane amount for the "shots" of tequila they poured on the girls they dragged up to molest that none of us, or anyone for that matter, ever ordered. If this weren't shocking and disturbing enough, things got even worse. As soon as the girls were let go, we discovered that as the above actions occurred, one of the girl's purse she had on her person at the time she was pulled on stage and flipped around, was stolen with her money and her AND her friend's passports in it. A fact confirmed when the ladies demanded to see security footage where a person could be seen absconding with the girl's purse during the "show" as they were tossed around. We were 8 guys, 3 girls (one of whom, the one whose purse was stolen while on stage, was originally from Mexico, savvy about being careful there, and spoke fluent Spanish), none of us were drunk, and this all took place within minutes from the time we arrived. The purse snatching somehow went completely unnoticed by the "staff/security" who were creating the perfect distraction, (described above), for it to happen, WHILE the distraction happened. Coincidence? We all suspected, and still suspect, not. And all of this happened in the middle of the day in broad daylight. Watch your ass there. read more

After all of this, your expected to pay $10.00 for the experience even though you did not agree to participate in it. Very much a concern and a liability issue especially if you have a pre existing medical condition. We sat on the Papas and Beer front patio for a cold Tecate before returning to our cruise ship, enjoying the last couple of hours in Mexico. the ice cold beer was served with a slice of lime and a small plastic cup of salt. Delicious! A parade passed us as a policeman walked both and forth nearby. He was actually working on the corner near Papas to keep street vendors from harassing the patrons with their goods for sale. About halfway into my beer, the policeman came over to our table and extended his arm to me, holding out a bag of potato chips. The chips were drenched in hot sauce, and I took one, glad that I still had half of a beer left! I gulped down the rest of the beer, trying to quench my throat fire, and asked him what was on the chips. He didn't speak any English. Wanting to explore a little more of Ensenada before departure we only stayed for the one beer here, but it was fun - their outdoor patio is great, just beware of hot sauced cops. read more

This is the worst establishment for Americans!! If you are an American beware. They see dollar signs and treat you like an atm!The food is mediocre! They offer you good service but they mark everything up! Ended up charging me and my friend 300 dollars each for 2 beers and dinner. Their security will harass you if they see you are American and won't let you leave if you don't pay all that. Honestly feared for my life. Not entirely sure why this place is so darn popular other than the fact that it's probably the loudest bar on the street. Being at Papas & Beer made me feel like I was at any other bar in SoCal, price included. Unless you're trying to pick up someone that probably lives somewhere in SoCal, I'd check out some of the other bars. I gave the bar an extra star because instead of an Adios MF, it's called a "Good-bye MF" which I thought was hilarious (I'm easily entertained). read more
