The food was amazing. This is only constructive criticism for the owner. If you are sick, please stay home. We were having a great time and enjoying our lunch and the owner and his wife arrived. They were sitting by our table. Apparently he is sick and came to have lunch. All of a sudden he started clearing his throat and spitting in a cup at the table very loudly. I was unable to keep eating as he did this repeatedly. The tables are so close that I had to stand up and leave as I was getting nauseous. I asked my husband to please pay the tab and leave at the moment. If you are sick, and are going to visit your restaurant knowing you are dealing with that situation, please be discrete. My husband and I went to Papa's Raw Bar with great expectations based on all the positive reviews. The restaurant is in a strip plaza, therefore, with the outside seating you are basically seating in the parking lot, but they do have live music, so it makes it kinda fun, but seating where I'm a stone throw away from my car, is not my thing, so we sat inside. The inside of the place needs remodeling, it's dingy-looking and with the prices they charge for their MP snapper which is their most popular dish, that almost everyone orders, they can afford to renovate the place. We order the conch fritters, which turned out to be just fried batter, because there's hardly any conch in them. The smoke fish dip, was just okay. The clam and conch chowder were awful. We had the tile fish for dinner and it was just okay. The ambience inside is crap. What I do have to praise is the staff, as they are extremely friendly and explained the menu to extra cost for certain items on the menu. We came here for dinner when we were visiting the area based on reviews. The outside dining area is unassuming and casual right next to their fish market. We started with the clam chowder, fried calamari, tuna nachos, and a sushi roll and we all enjoyed each dish. For dinner we had the fried shrimp, the tacos and the shrimp Po boy and the shrimp were large and fresh and some of the best we have ever had! Kirstie S was great, I asked her for her honest opinion about the menu and she took her time and went over it with me. I ended up getting the Victoria no Secret , my first riceless roll (so yummy ) . My son got this chicken fried rice (kid's menu ), it's a big portion that we even took some for tomorrow's lunch. I can't wait to be in Pompano to come eat here again. There is a Sushi chef serving the freshest made rolls and Sashimi. The restaurant is Beer and Wine only, but it's hardly limiting since it offers over 100 Craft Beers including local favorites like Funky Buddha, Due South and Cigar City, the beer selection is out of control. The Wine list and Sake options are equally impressive and I love that the wine is served in proper crystal wine glasses and not the average cheap-glass that most restaurants settle for, it's the simple things like the thin wine glass touching your lips that makes it that much more enjoyable. Before I get into the foodie part, let me begin with the atmosphere of the place which is great. The idea was clearly to come off with a Bahamas influence, but though prevalent with its Bimini Room décor, comes off more Key West with a cozy laid back Margaritaville state of mind casualness. The patrons all seem to be fun types with a healthy cross section of the twenty somethings, middle agers and olders up into their 70's like myself. The general dress of the group is basically beachside though I did note a couple of youngish girls in what might be best termed neophyte sausage wallet attire who aroused some obvious apodyopsis (I'm trying to be diplomatic about it) from around the bar. The bar has a huge selection of beers, some very interesting wines, and an area with plenty of flat screens with showings of various sports games but somehow nicely avoids that beer guzzling crude loud mouth type of ambiance so common to most sports bars even though this particular bar is clearly Buffalo Bills fan oriented. But, if you want more dinning like surroundings there is the Bimini Room which is more relaxed, quieter and setup in restaurant fashion with tables and chairs. Papp's also has a varied schedule of entertainment and special events (like the once a month Gombay Mondays) which if you are interested is best checked out in advance on their web site. The place is owned and operated by the same folks who have the next door Seafood World which is a restaurant as well as purveyor of some of the freshest as well as varied seafood in the area, so you can be pretty sure everything served at Pappa's Raw Bar is not only tops in quality, freshest possible and properly prepared. Their menu selection is big and widely varied with all sorts of different types of preparations. In fact their Asian even tops that of what are specifically Asian restaurants but the main theme is raw bar and freshly prepared seafood. On that count they have just about everything you could want in oysters, clams, conch, fish, soft shells, lobster & etc. On my most recent visit I went for their Badger's char grilled oysters plus a dozen Gulf Coast raw. The char grilled came nicely grilled covered with a tasty cheese very much New Orleans in preparation style and the Gulf Coast raws were plump, absent any grit and perfectly fresh, oyster flavorful and clean to the taste. Overall, Pappa's is an enjoyable place offering some really good, really fresh foods in what are some delightfully fun filled surroundings. First time customers and we were greeted by rude hosts. Maybe they were having a bad day? We wouldn't have minded as much if the experience turned around. We were sadly disappointed. The servers seem to have higher priority with texting, rather than attending to guests. I would recommend the Wahoo bites if you like to eat rubber tires. My date's fish was bland and salty. When we checked in we decided to sit at the tables along the bar as it was crowded and had lots of sporting events on numerous big screen TVs. ( Great for NCAA and NBA playoffs) We ordered several dozen raw oysters and a few dozen grilled oysters to start. Both were fresh and delicious. The raw oysters were cold, firm yet creamy with the taste of the sea. The grilled oysters were smoky and fresh The soft shell crabs, alaskan king crab legs, ceviche and the sweet and sour shrimp were all insanely delicious. They don't take reservation, so you never know if you'll be seated quickly or not and also their outdoor seating is kind of in the parking lot. We were misinformed even though I pointed out that I know that's not always allowed! The server who took our order, Lindsay was incredible! She pivoted with a solution that got something in our belly. However, when she was friendly and sweet the manager came and called her away rather rudely. If not for Lindsay's excellent service and sweet disposition I would have left before I could have discovered how good the food and drinks are. The Yelp reviews drew me to this establishment during our short visit but we were quickly disappointed. I should have known better when the server suggested their version of the Big Mac, loaded French fries, and the sliders. But I started with the conch chowder after learning the owners are Bahamian. The chowder was more like chili with a lot of black pepper. The menu featured chargrilled oysters named Nola so I assumed the technique was similar to the famous New Orleans style but they were mediocre with heavy Cajun seasoning to disguise the "days old" taste. Because the server was nice, I continued to try other items she recommended as she explained the owners were also managing the seafood market next door. Surely I can't go wrong with the peel and eat shrimp, right? Wrong... I'll spare the details and simply say, this is not a quality seafood restaurant and the owners need to reevaluate their menu.
