My fiance and I were running errands in the area and when we were done it was a little later than we anticipated. We had driven by this establishment earlier in the evening and my fiance suggested we go to the "roast beef place" instead of cooking that night. When we went in we were immediately greeted by a very polite woman. The decor was a little dated but everything looked very clean. It actually had a bit of a comforting retro vibe and reminded me of the local pizza place my family went to in NH every week in the 80's and 90's. My fiance asked the woman at the counter about their roast beef sandwiches and he was surprised when she pointed to the roast beef sub on their menu. Considering the establishment has "roast beef" in the name it was our expectation that their primary focus would be amazing roast beef sandwiches. Nevertheless, my fiance ordered a roast beef sub and I went with a chicken stir fry sub. When we sat down to eat I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious my sub was. It was a yummy combination of grilled chicken, provolone cheese, mayo and grilled veggies (peppers, onions and mushrooms). Unfortunately, my fiance was incredibly disappointed in his sub. According to his description is was really bland and that he could tell what he was eating was meat but it had zero flavor. He ended up adding a bunch of BBQ sauce we had in our fridge just to make it taste like something. So my final thoughts on this place is that it's average based on what we had. I think they probably have some good stuff on their menu and I can personally recommend their Chicken Stir Fry Sub. However, they should either focus on the quality of their roast beef and put more emphasis on roast beef offerings or they should remove the "roast beef" part of their name as it's misleading. read more

Not the same at all. The sandwiches are no longer that good, very generic deli meat you can find anywhere and the quantity of meat and toppings is weak. Even the bread seems different, not fresh. Before the roast beef and also the Italian were substantial and very tasty, now basic low quality in my opinion. We have been trying to get to papas for a long time however we always seemed to come when there closed. Anyway the big sign out front says roast beef! My thinking that this place must cook the meat in house or maybe they have some other process that makes there roast beef be worthy of this sign. Unfortunately no this is the same roast beef that you can get at big Y. The portions are generous however no it's not served with brown gravy and cheese oozing out just plain dry. The Pizza cheese looked burnt and used several tissues to pat it down amd remive the grease . 2 bites and i threw the slice in the garbage because it didnt have any real pizza flavor like Yankess Pizza in the Bronx did. Save your money ordered 2 dinners and a grinder tonight what a waste of money food was bland and the portions were small. I ordered chicken Alfredo it was served with cheap box spaghetti that was all stuck together. And it had about 4 bites of chicken in it. My garlic bread was a brick and inedible. Decide to try this place, after passing by it a lot. Place is very clean at first impression. We picked a table and the waitress came and handed menus. Nothing fancy, standard Items from a Greek owned place. The menu layout is hard to focus on, and I really didn't see anything that popped out at me. This place should have 2-dollar signs, because the prices seemed high. Many of the reviews here are old. The word "roast beef" was on the sign up front, so my wife ordered a small roast beef grinder. I ordered the cheeseburger platter. I wasn't asked how I liked the burger cooked but asked what I wanted on it. I just felt like catsup and a little mustard, and when I asked if I wanted lettuce and/or tomato and said no, she looked at me like I had 3 eyes. I also went with the onion rings, in place of French fries. Food came out a little longer than it should, seeing that it was between meal times and only 3 table occupied. First, the grinder: ample items on it, good amount of meat, fresh bread, and no gristle in the meat. Again, a little pricey. Cheeseburger: it was cooked well done. Was it dry? I couldn't tell, because there was enough catsup and mustard to do 3 burgers. I noticed it was oozing out all sides. I opened it up to try to remove some of it and I noticed the patty was cut in half. Why??? I don't even want to guess. I ended up eating it with a knife and fork because it was so saturated, and the 2 piece patty, that I didn't date pick it up. The onion rings were dark brown. Old oil or too much time in the deep fryer? The waitress was friendly, and I really didn't want to send it back and chance it. This place is a little bit throwback, little bit mom n pop, but with a nice family restaurant menu that includes the usual pizza suspects. Interesting to note is that, in spite of the prominently featured roast beef sign out front, inside it seems there are only one or two mentions of roast beef on the list. Nevertheless, my kid and I each got a roast beef sandwich, cuz said sign. They were pretty good. The roast beef was tasty, the sandwich simple, and about the right size for the price. We had gravy cheese fries that were well made and yummy. I felt like the fattened calf when I left, which is usually a good sign, right? Wait staff are great, btw. Roast Beef!!!!!! I don't usually like roast beef but holy moly I will tell you this roast beef grinder was unbelievable. Let me tell you how it all started. Saturday 7/14, I was on a mission to get a car registered so I made the fateful venture to the DMV in Willimantic. As I pulled in the DMV parking lot, the first thing that I noticed was a sign saying "Papa's Pizza and Roast Beef" and underneath it, "Sprite"... my mouth, instantly opened with awe, I immediately craved Roast Beef and Sprite. Something I would never really choose to eat otherwise. I began my long wait in line at the DMV, all the while occasionally glancing out the window to ensure the roast beef wasn't an illusion, a desert oasis of roast beef and sprite heaven. Numerous times I heard people quip under their breaths how long they've been waiting in line and how terrible the DMV is, but little do they know there is a roast beef treat awaiting them on the outside. I finally made my way to the DMV window, Marlene was incredibly helpful and friendly and made my experience simple and enjoyable. Once the car was registered, I sprinted out the door full speed, did a flip over a bush between the DMV parking lot and the Papa's Roast Beef. I excitedly ran in to the restaurant and the lady asked if I was eating in or taking to go... I thought for a quick moment and immediately settled on eating in... I needed to enjoy this roast beef at it's freshest. I sat down, perused the menu quickly, she came to get my order. "What will it be" she asked, I responded "Roast beef grinder, half, toasted, extra extra extra mayo, lettuce and tomato, I can't stress extra mayo enough, I'll also start with a piping hot slice of cheese pizza, and then I chose to wash it all down with a tall cup of ice cold Sprite please". She smiled, quickly scurried away to enter my order. A few moments later a cheesy crispy slice of cheese pizza was presented to me. It was good, not the greatest, I would refer to it as good tasting bad pizza. Once I finished that lovely slice, the roast beef grinder arrived, it looked perfect, resting gently on the old school style tan restaurant plates, I looked in awe as lettuce was spilling out the sides, hot hot mayo was dripping from all four corners of each of the halves of sandwich, I lifted the sandwich and took my first bite. What a glorious sandwich this was, the tastes all melded together in one harmonic taste, the roast beef was thinly sliced and tender and very nicely seasoned, nothing in the sandwich was too overpowering, it's like they all just worked together, a symphony of flavors. The bread, oh the bread... It was perfectly toasted, crispy at first bite, and then soft I the middle... It was the best grinder I've ever had. I will be going back at my next earliest convenience... During my business trip, I found myself in this quaint small town in CT. I decided to stop at Papa's due to an overwhelming hunger--very glad I did. The pizza was absolutely incredible. Had a great chew to it while still maintaining an incredible flavor. The cheese was perfectly stringy and the sauce vibrant and bright. Super surprised by just how much I enjoy it. Went there at 8:30 on a Friday night to order a grinder. I had planned to sit down and eat it in the restaurant, but the owner told me, "You have to take it to go. We close at 9:00." First, whoever heard of a pizza place that closes at 9:00 on a Friday night (especially when their website says they're open 'til 11:00)? Second, it was only 8:30. It wouldn't have taken me a half-hour to eat a grinder! One more thing: they don't take debit or credit cards, just cash--in 2018, mind you. My favorite grinder place in Willimantic. Been coming here for 14+ years and I think it's the best. I like the meatball and sausage grinders, toasted with cheese. The cool thing about Papa's grinders is that they shave all the meat. The meatball and sausage grinders are shaved meat and they are awesome. I've passed this restaurant a million times over a 30 year span and never stopped. I'm not shy to say I'm a food snob, foodie/chef. Wow, great experience, staff is family and just ridiculously nice and makes you feel at home. I asked for a recommendation on what I should order and was told the buffalo wings and fries. First, let me say the service was excellent. My server was super nice, prompt, and attentive. With that said, I think that was the only standout thing about my experience at Papas. I ordered the roast beef sandwich, as it seemed to be their signature item according to their sign outside. The grinder was adequate, but certainly nothing exceptional. It was your standard deli roast beef roll, lettuce, tomato, and mayo on a toasted grinder roll. Something I felt I could make at home for much cheaper. I also ordered curly fries as well, which were also mediocre at best. Now I'm not saying the food is bad, it's just nothing out of the ordinary. My main gripe with Papas is that it is cash-only, though. I'm sure I missed the sign on the door, but nowadays I can't fathom why you wouldn't at least have some kind of way to pay by card. I certainly didn't appreciate paying an extra $2.50 using their ATM to take out the money I needed tp pay for the meal. The only time I deal with a place that is cash-only is if the food/product they are offering something especially good. Unfortunately, Papa's does not offer this in my opinion. I work sporadically in Willimantic, and I never remember to pack a lunch. Normally I will run to the Stop n' Shop and grab food, but today I was feeling lazy and craving wings so I tried Papa's. This place reminded me of being 10 and living in the 'burbs in the 80s; it has a nice, comfortable atmosphere. The staff was friendly and efficient, and did not charge me extra when I subbed a salad for the fries that normally accompany the buffalo wings. Both came with a healthy portion of bleu cheese dressing, which was taken out of the fridge and given to me when I picked up my order. The wings were a good size and cooked very nicely - perfectly crispy skin! My one wish was that they were a little saucier, but that it is my only complaint. Not the best meatball grinder I've had. I was craving a good New England meatball grinder with homemade meatballs, crusty outside-soft inside bread, marinara and fresh shredded mozzarella cheese. This wasn't anything close to that and was such a let down. The bread was the highlight, but not toasted and crunchy on the outside. The meatball (?) was sliced and had more of a shaved look to it. I guess this place is more famous for roast beef sandwiches and not necessarily the rest of the grinders. The cheese was sliced and provolone I think. Sauce was a little tangy. The other two grinders looked equally as depressing as mine. The chicken Parmesan was made with frozen, breaded chicken. The server was beyond nice and so friendly. She was always smiling and was very good at juggling the counter, the tables, getting drinks and paying out. It's a dive. Nothing much to look at. read more

Growing up I had a local pizza joint that had meatball grinders that had meatballs shaved like deli meat. Since moving to this area years ago I have searched for that with no luck until I tried papas that is. Their meatball grinders are legendary, shaved like deli meat, spicy sauce, bread that has the right amount of crunch and soft. Their pizza is decent too, a large pie is kinda small from what I'm used to but good nonetheless. The place is cash only which I hate as I never carry cash but it's worth it just remember to hit the atm on the way. I personally hate willimantic and try to avoid it all costs and papas is right on main st but has plenty of Willy creeps lurking around. Never an issue inside though. read more

I am addicted to their genoa salami grinders and onion rings. Their grinder rolls are perfect- soft yet crusty like they should be. I have actually never tried their roast beef because I'm stuck on the salami! I have had some other appetizers though and they were all good. One thing is they put oregano on all their grinders so if you're like me and not a fan then ask for no oregano. Probably the best grinders in Willimantic! read more

As a student of ECSU, I have tried many resturants in Willimantic. Papas is by far the best place around. Papas is open late, always at least 11pm. Their roast beef sandwiches are not scant, he piles a load of roast beef on every one, which makes it delicious, and worth the $9.00 and change. The staff is very helpful and friendly. You can see Papa making the food right in the back, always joking around in his heavy italian accent. The resturant has plenty of seating for families, serves all major sodas, a few beers and even Hosmer Moutain Soda (local to Willimantic) and a tv in the corner. The only down side to Papas is they do not accept credit cards, but they have an ATM inside, which of course charges about $2.00 for every transaction. I highly reccomend trying Papas Pizza and Roast Beef . read more
