I recently visited with my family and had an experience so disappointing that we ended up walking out before even ordering. To start, the dining room was so dark it was difficult to see. Because we had a baby with us, we were escorted into a separate room and placed at an oversized 8-person table for four people. Before I could even sit down--let alone receive or look at a menu--the server aggressively pressed me for our drink orders. Expecting guests to order drinks when they haven't been given a menu or even had a chance to sit down shows a lack of basic hospitality training. To make matters worse, the floor underneath our table was covered in leftover food from previous guests and clearly hadn't been swept. Atchison is blessed to have a gem like Paolucci. We stopped by for dinner five months ago and can't get it out of my mind. So, it's time to finally share my experience. We took a day trip to Atchison to go to the Amelia Earhart museum. My sister did the same a week earlier and found Paolucci. So we tried it too. Holy cow! The place is huge. Good luck finding which door to enter haha. The menu is also huge. Too many things appealed to us so we settled on Italian dishes. I ordered a Taste of Italy, a combination of meat sauce, Italian sausage, and a meatball over spaghetti or rigatoni. The meat sauce was certainly Paolucci's own, longtime, successful recipe. Tomatoes with light spices, absolutely delish. The meatball? Light and moist. The sausage? Homemade delish. This came with a side salad which had GOOD lettuce, not the crappy iceberg lettuce. This place is right out an hour from Kansas City. They have great customer service and their restaurant is very cozy and very quiet during the afternoons really nice place for lunch. If you were looking for a thick Hardy old world type of Italian, this is the place. We had Parmesan chicken, wonderful Caesar salad and red chili dipping sauce with pita bread. plenty of French bread. all the breads were baked there, including the pita. We also tried their lasagna, which was outstanding. I was going to try their spinach lasagna, but I kind of let that one go for the meat lasagna. It was very good because of the sauce I wanted to try their sauce. They sell their sauce by the quart also outstanding if you go to third and Main, you can find this place they're in Atchison. It's gonna fool you a little bit. I posted some pictures that will show the backside at main. It just has the name of the place. It's a brown wall with one or two windows that's it, go down in front of the place in order to see where the doors are. There's also a pizzeria upstairs I didn't go up there. My wife had a look around and she was impressed. We may go back to try that out on a weekend maybe an evening before it gets, too late , we are old folks, but we do enjoy good food. We arrived today at Paolucci's to eat breakfast with my family and it was an absolutely miserable experience. We were seated pretty quickly - but that's about where the good ended. It took over 10 minutes to get our menus after being seated. It took another 15 minutes before our order was taken. We then waited over an hour without anyone checking in on our table - they didn't come by to check on how we were doing, or if we needed our water refilled, or how soon the food would be out... nothing. So we sat there and hoped our food would arrive soon so our three children would get to eat. It's hard enough to keep the kids occupied for a normal restaurant wait and they were awesome through this debacle even with the elongated waiting experience. Finally, after over an hour, our waitress came to our table to tell us our ticket was in the next couple. We said ok, and waited. Five minutes later she came back and said she was wrong, and they were 5 tickets behind. At this point, we had been in the restaurant for over an hour and still hadn't gotten our food. I said we were leaving. I am almost certain that the owners/managers of the establishment were eating at the table next to us (as they were checking out other people at the general store and making sandwiches behind us in the deli) and they seem nonplussed by our exit. Our waitress said she'd hope we'd try them again, but it was far too late for that. We left the restaurant hungry, angry, and overwhelmed by the lack of service and the invisibility act of their management. Totally unacceptable experience. For a restaurant that has been in business as long as Paolucci's has, there is no excuse for the total lack of awareness the staff gave their customers. I will never eat there again and will heavily discourage any visitors from going there as well. read more

Came in for the first time. Waitress said the wait was 40 minutes for food. After 75 minutes we were told it would "just be 10 more minutes." If you're in Atchison, skip it and go to DQ so you're not sitting there all day and missing the museums.... Only small town in America that doesn't have mashed potatoes... but they have chicken fried steak, open faces roast beef, and chicken... not really understanding this...after 1.5 hours NO FOOD. We had free bread and water. They also don't serve real butter either... I'd give it zero stars but that's not an option. read more

Been here several times, and overall had good experiences. The food is good, especially the French toast at breakfast. Last time I went we were told to seat ourselves and the waitresses didn't come to us for a long time, so we moved to a more "visible" table. I knew before we headed to Atchison that the dining options would be limited but we were there to spend time with a friend who is attending college there. She confirmed the dismal options (but was still happy to not eat in the dining hall on campus!) and we headed to Paolucci. I couldn't find very many vegetarian options and when asked if the red pepper dip was hummus, was told that it was (which made sense since it was served with pita bread). But it definitely was not hummus! I think it was a cottage cheese based dip and it was just ok (I'm not a fan of cottage cheese) but not what I was expecting. Also the chips served on the side were overkill. I had a side Caesar salad which was, again, ok but too heavily dressed and with too many croutons. Husband had the patty melt and chili which were both ok but not stand out. Looks like reading other reviews that breakfast is the meal to eat here but sadly, dinner was a disappointment. read more

We've lived in Atchison close to a decade now, and I don't know why I've never reviewed Paolucci's. We eat here about once a month. Like most eating establishments in Atchison, you can assuage hunger. If you're expecting to have your gourmand socks knocked off, it's "not gunna happen." That said . . . The food is solid, leaving you satisfied at a fair price. The Italian is "Kansasy" . . . pasta past al dente drenched in sauce . . . either red or Alfredo. While I like my pasta al dente with just enough sauce to coat, I'm the minority in these parts. Most Kansans like their pasta swimming in sauce. I just mutter "uncle" under my breath and go with the flow. So . . . The Italian fare is creditable. I've had it all, from meatballs with rigatoni to the lasagna. My wife often orders the broasted chicken and likes it. Paolucci's offers nightly specials - including non-Italian - with good variety to keep the regulars coming back. I wish the salads were a little more than bagged greens, but the dressings are homemade - I think - and make the prima course palatable. There are usually a couple homemade soups to sub for salad if you like. For the price one really can't complain about the food . . . or the portions. There are also daily pie specials for dessert. I'm usually too full, but they look good as the waiters carry them past our table. Every dinner gets a basket of soft bread and ample butter. Some entrees come with a house special garlic bread that's smothered in mozzarella and broiled for a sec. Our grandkids love it! Don't know why, but we've never been for breakfast, so I can't speak to that. Italian food demands wine. A minor ding here. Wine comes down from the upstairs bar in the same small stem glass, whether it's red or white. Atchisonians are more Bud Light folks, so even if more attention were given to the wine list, few people would care . . . or order it. I get it. So if you're ordering wine, you just ask for a generic varietal - Merlot, "Cab," Chardonnay, etc. - and you'll get a glass of low-end table wine. I'm afraid to order a cocktail. Again, Atchison is an alcohol-and-pop place - Can you say, "Jack-n-Coke, please."? - so I'll have my martini or Manhattan at home afterwards. Gotta give the wait staff a shout-out. Paolucci's works to make your dining experience enjoyable. Once in a while you'll get a waiter with a skill set more suited to the counter at McDonald's, but most of the time you'll be happy with the prompt and friendly service. Proprietress Margie Begley (a Paolucci descendent) is right there most nights, and she keeps a keen and loving eye on things. Paolucci's has been around a long time, going back several generations. Let's not quibble over authenticity. This isn't St. Louis' "Hill." It's 3rd & Main in Atchison. The Paolucci's were real Italian immigrants who invested their souls and sweat into their adopted and beloved American hometown. The Paolucci/Begley family continues to give back to Atchison every single day they open the doors to their little bistro and bar. Enjoy it for what it is . . . quality homemade food at fair price. Quaint place. They have 4 separate areas: restaurant, deli, banquet room and longe upstairs with pool and darts. We sat in the restaurant and ordered a sandwich from the dinner menu and a sandwich from the bar/lounge menu. The Mediterranean sandwich was suggested by the server, Alex, when I gave her my two choices I couldn't choose from. I was very happy with my dinner! We live in Kansas City and were exploring and enjoying the fall colors and are happy we gave Paolucci's a try. All the servers and bartender were very friendly and provided great service. read more

What a find for breakfast! I didn't realize, when I planned a the last minute to head to Atchison this morning, that there aren't many options in the town. So, I just about literally stumbled upon this diner. Not the greatest signage, so I wasn't even totally sure that it was open until I tried the door. Boy am I glad I tried it. Some of the best French Toast I've had at a diner in recent memory, and it came out quickly. Also, perfectly prepared scrambled eggs on the side. And, best of all, it was super cheap! We stopped for breakfast on our way through. Wanted a Bloody Mary. Hostess said the bar didn't open until 11am but she would ask if she could make them. She was given the OK and they were quite good. I had the veggie omelette with rye toast and hubby had biscuits and gravy. The order came very promptly and was hot and delicious. The toast was just right not too crisp and not too soggy.
