One might ask themselves, "Fried chicken in a gas station?", but there are many hidden gems lurking in unassuming places. After much hype and inquiring with a friend, we decided to try Pantry Fried Chicken, a.k.a. "gas station chicken", selecting a location closest to our house. We opted to order a la carte items, which saved us almost $10 (essentially eliminating drinks). Our meal consisted of chicken tenders, boneless chicken wings, fish fillet, large side of wedges, side of coleslaw, and fried okra. Soft rolls were a bonus! The breading on chicken is crunchy & tasty and comes with an array of sauce selections. The large size wedges could feed an army (at least 4-6 ppl). Potatoes were crunchy on outside (coated?) and soft & tender like a baked potato on the inside (our favorite). The okra was chewy. Now, I'm not sure how to rectify this issue as it had been sitting in a closed container, possibly trapping moisture (maybe wax paper bags?) ‍ Unfortunately , the fish was included in okra container (problem for those who don't like their food touching, but we didn't mind), and fish seemed a bit undercooked, hard to cut, a bit chewy/fishy for my liking. Not sure what type of fish they used, but I do prefer mine cooked a bit more (maybe they accommodate this request?). The coleslaw was tangy (I could definitely identify the horseradish!). All in all portion sizes are plentiful and they provide good value for the money. Everything cooked appears to be deep fried and nothing really stood out besides salt/pepper as seasoning and the potato wedges. You do get good portion sizes and value for the money. Add-ons also seem reasonable. We ordered via app (they have a rewards program) which provided follow-up texts regarding pick-up instructions and thanking us for our order/visit again. You can additional items (per piece price) to a la carte items. Again, this is located at a gas station in a strip mall near Scientific. The ambiance is storefront carryout with lots of parking lot traffic (so be aware). Not sure if dine-in options are offered (aside from your car interior). Recommend checking them out--even if it's once--and form your own opinions. (I was raised on broasted chicken/potatoes, so I may be a bit biased.) read more

The really great thing about seeking out new food places to try is you just never know when you will hit the next hidden gem - it might be Fine Dining, it might be a great Ethnic restaurant, it might be a throwback Mom & Pop diner, or it might just be great fried chicken, fried fish, fried okra, and huge tater wedges in a grill, located in a convenience store on the outskirts of High Point. Small cafeteria setup inside the store, and everything is bright and clean. This is definitely a take out place. In addition to the above, they offer fried livers and gizzards, and a few other items. You can get the items individually, with sides, and in combos with sides and drink. We tried a combo with 2 Fried Chicken Quarters, a massive amount of Potato Wedges, a roll, and a drink for $7.99. We also tried the 2 piece Fried Fish Filets, with an equally massive amount of Fried Okra, a roll, and drink for $5.99. Since this was our first visit, we weren't prepared for the large amount of food involved or we might have ordered a little differently, a little less. The chicken is very, very good - fried perfectly, with a slightly thicker crust than most, but with great flavor. The fish filets were also very nice, well fried with a good, fresh taste. Okra and wedges were no less good. There is no ambience here (you eat in the car, or take it home), the food is all fried so those with healthy eating goals will find nothing here to their liking. But if you want some great fried chicken or fish, cheap, this is your place. We'll be back, once we've walked off some part of the calories. read more

Not only were they open past midnight but had some of the best chicken gizzards I tasted in many many years! I am so blessed to have discovered this place. Now since it's not popular; let me explain. Chicken gizzards are not the easiest to find (or cook). They can be too salty, too chewy, etc. They were cooked amazingly and were literally perfect! I have lived in the neighborhood since 2007 and this place has been on a constant decline from the constant shoot-outs and loitering beggars it's like you have to pay to park then pay the get back in your vehicle. The night staff is horrible and rude. The cashier seem to feel that their position grants them them the ability to abandon customer service( Literally stated no speak English to a customer). The food is very greasy, the Chicken wings are usually tough on the inside but crispy on the outside, Only the skin is edible. I dropped in on a Wednesday afternoon about 5:15. There was only one spot left in the lot and it's a little tight with the gas pumps right there. The staff was friendly, but I found the menu a little confusing. I ordered a breast, a leg quarter and two drums. I mistakenly thought that the drums were wing drummettes, but I was wrong. They're drumsticks. I also ordered wedges and cole slaw. What I ended up with was two leg quarters, a breast and a drumstick. The man writes the price on top of the Styrofoam container and then you bring it over to the register to pay and get bagged. The breast was dry and chewy. Not good. The drumstick was tender and juicy. The extra crispy breading was very good. I also enjoyed the leg quarters. Unfortunately, I didn't get any wing meat. The wedges were adequate. The cole slaw was more Food Lion style than KFC style and nothing special. I've heard a lot of good things about this place and may try it again. read more

Caught me by complete surprise, best chicken I've had so far from a restaurant/hole in the wall

This location needs serious work. Grease is old and stale. Employees don't know pricing listed on their menu and unprofessionally argue with customers. I ordered a Breast and Okra. Menu has 1 breast for $2.99 and 1 breast meal for $4.99. They list Okra as a side for $1.49. Guy was trying to charge $5.99. When I said something, he said Okra was $1 more which was listed no where on the menu. The offered to charge the $2.99 price plus $2.79 for Okra which would be $5.78. Price should have be $4.99 for the meal or $4.48 ($2.99 for the breast and $1.49 for the Okra). Avoid the MLK location of Pantry Fried Chicken and go to the Brentwood location. It is well worth the drive! Failed to mention the employees making comments about me as I was leaving. Saying stuff about the heavyset white guy. I was left with the impression people at this location (MLK in High Point) were racist and don't like white customers. read more

I had Pantry Fried Chicken recently when they were set up with their food truck at the Dixie Classic Fair. These guys are the REAL DEAL! Extremely hospitable, apologetic for a short wait, and masters of some serious fried chicken! I had the chicken tenders combo which came with five tenders, potato wedges, and a drink. The chicken was extraordinary! The batter is fantastic, the tenders are large, and it's incredibly juicy! The wedges are a nice size and fried perfectly! I stop in the store daily due to I live right around the corner. They have a good selection of chicken fish livers corn dogs pretty much all fried foods and it's good. Although I have seen some practices used in the kitchen that wasn't very clean. There are one or two cashiers that truly seem to help you but there's also a couple that are very rude and act like you're bothering them when trying to purchase something. I would give this Pantry Fried Chicken 3.5 stars if I could - they are better than "OK" but, not quite "Yay!" yet. The staff were quite but friendly and the place is pretty clean. The tables were cleaned quickly after being used. The chicken is pretty good but, just a little over cooked. The potato wedges were cooked perfectly. Their combos give you alot of food for the money but, it was too much for me. I would not go out of my way to eat here but, I will be coming back sometime. I will preface this by saying that this is one of the biggest food surprises ever. We first went here a couple of months ago when we were visiting the area. The menu was basically fried chicken (including livers and gizzards), fried fish, fried potato wedges, fried okra, etc., with a few sides like cole slaw. We had them pack up some chicken pieces and potatoes in a styrofoam box (no place to eat obviously) and headed back to the hotel. When we got back we tentatively took a bite. Oh. My. Gosh.! This is some awesome chicken! We both looked at each other in sheer delight and said, "These guys have done this before, this is some of the best chicken I've ever tasted!!" It was juicy, tender, perfectly coated and seasoned and heavenly! The potato wedges were bountiful, thick cut and flavorful. We called our daughter back in FL and told her about it. Her first words were, "You ate gas station chicken??" And thus it has been known in our family ever since. On this return trip to the area, we were beginning to think about dinner, so I asked my husband how he felt about "gas station chicken." He said that he had been thinking the same thing because we couldn't leave town without going back. I also opted to try the gas station fish. It was the best fish I've had in years! Again, perfectly fried, perfectly seasoned and not an hint of greasiness. We got enough chicken to last us through the 800 mile return trip home yesterday. I did think I had to be nice and save a piece for my skeptical daughter, which she just ate a few moments ago. She took a small bite and said, "Oh my gosh! This is gas station chicken?? This is amazing!!" She wanted to know how far it was from the house that we're looking at buying because we are all going to be there frequently. Some of the best fried chicken I have ever tasted, crunchy, peppery crust. Chicken was moist and hot. And the servings so ample that they had to tape the box. I was in High Point over the weekend with friends and this spot was recommended. I don't eat fried chicken like that but I'm a fan of chicken livers so I was delighted when I realized they were an option. Delicious and seasoned just right! I also had potato wedges and an order of chicken tenders I believe...maybe nuggets, not sure.
