Panera Bread is a corporate love child of what a delicious sandwich/ soup/ salad/ cafe with pastries should've been. The concept is good enough, but the place feels a bit sterile and expensive for what you get. Today, I came for breakfast and got a soufflé and americano. My soufflé was basically scrambled eggs with a flaky crust. The flavor was fine, but soufflés are tough to get right. There is a fireplace and chairs to sit at to work, but overall the place lacks personality and authenticity that can be better achieved at an independently owned cafe. 3/5 for service, food, and value (food to dollar ratio). read more

I can't remember the last time I ate at a Panera but I had a meeting at this location recently. It's pretty close to the highway which was convenient for me. Upon entering, I was immediately very overwhelmed by the menu as it's massive and I wasn't sure how the Pick 2 combo worked. The employee who took my order was helpful and patient, but I'm still not really sure how the Pick 2 combo works. She basically said you can pick 2 items from anything on the menu, that makes sense. But when I asked if it would be half sized portions, she said that it depends on the item, and some sandwiches would be full size and some would be half sized. The reason I asked is because I just wanted a small meal so I was looking for half sized items. I wanted something light so I went with a cup of the chicken noodle soup and the southwest Caesar salad with chicken. The combo comes with a side (bread, apple, or chips) but no drink. It looked like you could order on some tablets and they also do mobile orders. For anyone wondering, the salad was a half size. Once you place your order, you're given a buzzer to pick up your food towards the back of the restaurant. My food was ready quickly which was nice. The seating area is cozy with some booths and tables. The food was just okay for being a $20 meal. The soup was basically what you'd expect from a canned soup, and the salad was decent but nothing spectacular, similar to a bagged salad mix you can get at the grocery store. I hate to say it but--GROSS! I have been here many times over the past 15 years, but it's been many years. I went in this morning and all of the tables were uncleaned, many still with dirty dishes and even the empty tables were covered in crumbs and spilled drinks. I ordered my coffee and it just didn't taste right. Not sure if it was the coffee, the half and half or the coffee urn. Either way, it was not good. On top of that, once I found a seat and literally cleaned it myself, I connected to wifi but the wifi was really rough-It took minutes to load each webpage. I'm typically a huge Panera fan. This location consistently gives out stale baggetts. Even worse... I tried bringing my 1 year old daughter to this location. I asked for an order of grilled chicken. The gentleman said they cannot ring items up a la carte. He said there was nothing I could do other than order and pay for a sandwich and customize It to leave off everything but the chicken while paying for the full sandwich. Super disappointing with the lack of accommodation for young children. Nothing on the kids menu falls within her whole food diet as a young child. I use this store a couple times a week. I have been a member of the Sip Club since the program started and have not really had any problems with it. I think it is a great promotion. Recently they added a $1.00 bagel option--but I have tried it for two days and it has not worked--and going in the store to try to get help has been aggravating. The little old lady behind the counter has no clue as to how to help and questions whether the promotion even exists and demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of how the Sip Club works. On Monday the manager had no idea about the $1.00 bagel promotion and did not know how to fix the issue. I finally asked for another bagel and left. A day later I tried again and had the same issue. This time the manager was even less helpful and I, the customer, had to ask her to calm down and speak to me decently and not raise her voice. I get it that it's only $1.00 but it's a promotion I'm paying for each month. The manager says it's the Panera people (I had to explain that she is Panera, too) that are causing the problem. She finally go frustrated and cancelled my order! Horrible customer service! They kept looking for a way to blame me, THE CUSTOMER, for the problem which was on their end. We were visiting from Illinois for Junior Gold and spent 8 days eating out for lunch and dinner and our only bad experience was at this Panera. I was waiting 15 minutes for my food while the employees were chatting and enjoying their time. All I ordered was a chicken sandwich and two orders after me were done before mine and when I told the manager about it and said I've been waiting 15 minutes she said "it's only been 8 minutes" because according to her it's not when I've been waiting, it's when they get the ticket. This is the worst Panera Bread I've ever been to. It looked like nobody wanted to be there. The lobby was dead. Nobody was there except for a few older people. (It was 11:30-- lunchtime.) A severely elderly woman took my order. I got the pick 2 deal. Broccoli cheddar soup and grilled cheese. She told me that with this deal I can get a cookie half off and a choice of an apple, chips, or a baguette for a side. I chose the chips for my side. I waited for my food to be done, which didn't take very long, maybe 5-10 minutes. However, when I got my food, the spoon for my soup had someone else's lip marks and chunks of dried soup from somebody else. Also, they gave me a baguette instead of the chips I wanted. We order catering from this location pretty regularly, and I stop in a couple times a year for personal dining, too. Typically we have great food and service, no issues. The restaurant is always decently busy and sometimes there is a line. I also find that if it is busier, the tables aren't wiped down or bused super quickly. However, food is usually good and consistent. As far as catering, they are always prompt and the service is friendly. Can't beat the online ordering for catering of the delivery for small lunch sized orders. Today, we had a supplier bring in a catering order from this location. In one of the boxed salad lunches there was a bug. I called the store to let them know, and I talked with Lou the manager. She was apologetic and quick to find a remedy for the situation. She did say that the restaurant doesn't have bugs, but most likely it came in with the lettuce.. which would lead me to wonder why the lettuce isn't washed thoroughly. However, she was very sincere in her apology and offered to rectify the situation for us. She also was going to pull the remaining lettuce and throw it out and inspect. I was comfortable with her response and fix. We will still order catering from Panera, due to convenience and food options. However, I'll probably always check each bite from here on out. read more

I think there is a complete lack of understanding of good customer service here. I Placed an order for delivery, for a grain bowl. I requested 2 extra items on my bowl. 1 item I paid extra for and one included an option for the extra at no charge. They did not include the extra of either item. Also one of the items actually had half of the normal amount. The bowl was bland and flavorless. I called to explain my problem and was told they would credit the one item I paid extra for. My grain bowl was not made well and they are crediting 1 item?? This is not good customer service. They should have credited the entire bowl or given me a replacement for a later date. There is no accountability for errors and no apology was made. We all make mistakes but correct them!! read more

As much as I like your Asiago bagels, you still only get one star. It doesn't matter what time of day it is, but you never have any bagels left. 9 times out of 10, you're out of all the bagels I like or all of them in general. I have even ordered off the app showing there are some in stock only to get a call 20 mins later letting me know that they don't have any of the bagels I ordered left. It can be mid morning on a weekend or any time in the afternoon M-F and yet you're always out of bagels. You need to do a better job of pre-planning and making more to keep up with the demand. I did a pickup order and it was a major fail. First of all, they brought out the wrong order to us. Then came back to the car and took back the wrong order after we had gone through it. I love the tomato soup! While I was sick the past few days, I had the tomato soup for lunch everyday. The steak and Swiss sandwich is also pretty good. The bread is always fresh and they have a good assortment of pastries to select from. This location is much larger than other locations I have seen. It is also only 2 minutes away from the hotel we are currently staying at and 5 minutes from the in-laws house. I really like that they always have freshly sliced lemon in a container by the drinks. read more

Panera is a nice option for a more upscale, sometimes healthier option than typical fast food. This location on Alpine gets very crowded during the week at lunch time. Jerry the manager and Kay the cashier went above and beyond their normal duties to satisfy my breakfast order as they were out of many options. He tried to refund my order as I didn't find that necessary, the swap was just fine. As we ate our meal Jerry again dropped by the table with cookies for us as another apology for the minor inconvenience. We love Panera. When traveling it is always our choice of restaurant. We also order regularly for curbside year 'round most often ordering my favorite salad - Fuji Apple Chicken. However, whenever we order a half size order, they can't get the proportions right. It's not only far less than half, but hardly ever any lettuce. That held true today. Panera breads quality never waivers. I've been to Panera's all over west/central Michigan and the food is always fantastic. Ordering on web portal can be frustrating sometimes and items can come up missing. Always double-check the bag. If I could give zero stars, I would. I have been to many Paneras in different states, and even worked closely with one for catering at a previous job, and this Panera just sucks, plain and simple. The wait times are atrocious. Last summer I was with two friends and it took close to half an hour for our food to be delivered. This past winter I went back, thinking it was a fluke. When we walked in they told us to try the kiosk, there was no line, so we did. As we were ordering, I heard a manager say that some of the kiosk orders were not going through, but I didn't think much of it because he watched us and another person ordering at the kiosk and didn't advise us to stop. My boyfriend and I waited 30 min (it was lunchtime and they were busy, so we gave them benefit of the doubt) for our food before we had to go speak to someone. They never even got our order. So we had to re-order our food, and then waited close to another 20 min for it to arrive, with very little sympathy from the manager. Just tonight we used the mobile order feature for a quick dinner to eat at home. It said it would be ready at 7:33 pm. We got inside at 7:30 and waited. The screen even said my order was ready. No one brought it out. Multiple employees and someone I am assuming was a manager watched us. As we sat there, three other orders were put in, and the one guest received his order before us. As we sat waiting, my boyfriend noticed a bag sitting on the pick up counter (not the mobile order pickup). They called the other man's name, and still our bag sat. An employee went to pick up food to be delivered to a guest dining in. I walked down and asked if the bag was a mobile order, the employee said "yes, the tag is in the bag". It was our food. I said "ok, well we have been waiting for like 10min down there for it to be brought out, but have a good night guys." My response was snarky (won't deny it) but THEN the employee (assuming the same one as I was walking away I couldn't see his face), replied with just as much snark, "thanks you too!" In front of the same presumed manager who saw us sitting there. This Panera needs to have a serious overhaul in customer service training, because this is straight up appalling to me. I don't expect things on a gold platter, but common courtesy goes a long way. Customer service is NOT a glamorous job and I understand first hand the frustrations it brings, and even like to give leeway in most situations, but this was unacceptable to me. Needless to say, despite living very close to this location, and loving the food Panera offers, I will not go back to this location and will not recommend any other person to dine in or take out here ever again. I typically love Panera, but this store never seems to keep many soufflés ready. So I tried ordering online, but they are an item out-of-stock. So I called, to order three 4-cheese soufflés. I asked when I could pick them up. I was told 40 minutes (a long time). When I arrived, they had my order ready, but when I opened the bag, only 1 was inside. 10 more minutes to wait! I had to show manager (Victoria) when I called, she tried telling me it wasn't 40 minutes. Manager also hung up on me when I ordered. Plus to top it all off, the soufflé that was in the first bag was not a 4-cheese. A very upsetting visit. read more
