My friends and I stopped in after a long day of shopping at the Vacaville outlets. This place is NOT that great. The food was OK. Maybe I just didn't have the right items on the menu.
There was a line out the door so I'm thinking this place MUST be good! I was deceived. I looked around and the place reminded me of an updated trendy cafe style Denny's. I sighed wondering if this was a bad idea. Don't get me wrong the place was clean and for the most part it seemed like a casual place. No complaints there.
The Order:
I was finally herded to the front of the line, and there standing before me was the reason for the long line. A teenager dressed in an untidy uniform, looking more like she should be standing in the corner chewing gum, off in la-la land talking to her friends about her boyfriend instead of FOCUSING on the hungry people coming in the door. (Sigh) I waited patiently while she repeatedly asked the customers to repeat their order not once to make sure she got it right but several times.
Here's a small sample of the torture I endured for 30 minutes.
Teen: So did you want a French baguette with your order or a wheat baguette?
Lady: I want the French baguette.
Teen: What? Did you say wheat?
Lady: I said French,
Teen: oh ok wheat....
Me: (sigh)
Lady: NO FRENCH! (clearly frustrated)
Teen: Oh OK! (fake smile)
No wonder there was a line, I finally got it. Just for the record...I did check to see if the lady's order came with the French baguette or the wheat baguette...she got a wheat baguette. LOL. I shouldn't laugh that they got her order wrong, but I understand WHY it happened, maybe she did it on purpose who knows.
The food:
Chicken Bacon Dijon Panini: Swiss cheese, chicken breast, mustard and bacon. This looked OK. Nothing spectacular. I did not try this one but the person who was sitting with me looked even more miserable with every bite. I had to hand her a tomato and some lettuce from my sandwich so she could keep eating it. It helped apparently. She did finish it so it couldn't have of been that bad.
Mediterranean Veggie: Tomato basil bread, red onion, cilantro hummus, tomatoes, feta, cucumbers and peppers. This was ok; if it hadn't been for the cilantro hummus and the feta this sandwich would have been a major disappointment.
Tuscan Chicken Sandwich: It's a cold chicken breast with field greens, tomatoes, red onions, pesto aioli, on Rosemary & Focaccia. Don't be fooled by the ingredients. This is a much dryer sandwich than I expected. Sandwiches for the most part I think should remind you of the Carl's Jr. commercials where there's stuff-dripping out because it's packed with tasty condiments, and oh yeah, flavor. Not the situation here. The pesto aioli was the only thing that provided some flavor. It was bland for the most part. With a name like Tuscan Chicken Sandwich I expected more. Oh well.
Ceasar Salad: It looked sooo good. Too bad it was deceiving. If you like dressing that tastes like mayo with a fishy aftertaste, then this is the salad for you. Neither the cheese, nor the ingredients had any strong indication of what you normally taste when you eat a really good Ceasar salad. There was no hint of tangy lemon, garlic, or tasty Parmesan cheese. The only thing I enjoyed were the croutons in the salad. Maybe they were having a bad day.
French Onion Soup: this was pretty good. It had more of a chicken broth taste than a sweet onion flavor, but overall not too bad. A little bland, in my opinion but hey if I ever go back, I'd probably get this again, maybe even in a bread bowl.
In a pinch this isn't a bad place, but I can think of a few places that make better sandwiches, at reasonable prices. Just to name two.... Little Lucca Sandwich Shop & Deli, and La Bou. read more
