My daughter picked Panera as she was excited to eat there for the first time. If I could give no stars I would!!! I have been looking for someone who serves French onion soup. Ordered a soup & 1/2 sandwich combo. Sandwich was decent. The soup tasted like they just opened the can poured it in the bowl added croutons and shredded cheese. Needless to say the soup was not even warm enough to melt the cheese. The taste was horrible and it smelled like stew. I had to ask for a lid for my drink cup as there weren't any stocked. As for my daughter's sandwich ...the bread was so hard you couldn't chew it, no chicken to speak of and the cheese was melted everywhere but the sandwich. No other toppings Her Mac n cheese was at least warm and half way decent. Then when we were leaving I needed something for my daughter's sandwich that she didn't finish. I enjoyed my brief visit to the Topeka Panera Bread restaurant on Wanamaker. The ambience and reception was adequate. The food was tasty, the service was standard. The feel was one of your typical commercial restaurant. I would come again, but I'm not in a rush to do so. Staff greeted me with a , "I'm doing my job. What can I do to help you?" attitude; so, I'm not eager to deal with that unappealing vibe, again. I'd much rather enjoy the spirit and energy of one of the family owned, down to earth, we-love-to-have-you-here type restaurants like "Cook's Family Restaurant "; "Bradley's Corner Cafe"; or, "Hannover's Pancake House". I ordered the chicken avocado BLT sandwich: Copied from their menu- Grilled chicken, applewood smoked bacon, aged white cheddar, crisp mixed greens, vine-ripened tomatoes, fresh sliced avocado, garlic aioli, salt and pepper on our Country Rustic Sourdough. I got two tiny little stripes of what I assume to have been mayonnaise, NO lettuce, NO tomatoes, two small slivers of avocado and some sliced deli chicken. Tasteless. I ate the chicken and the wee bit of avocado. Their bread is tough so it was trashed. I've honestly never been this disappointed in a meal and I personally do not want to go back. Pretty crummy for a $12 overpriced sandwich! Mine sure didn't look anything like the picture on the menu- I'd post their menu picture if I could and I should have taken a picture of what I got. I'm going to be honest, I've almost never been disappointed in any Panera. However, this location was dirty, super warm, and lacking any customer service. There was trash at almost every table, trash all over the floor, no lids for cups, and we weren't acknowledged by any staff until handing us our food. The quality of the food was okay, but the mac n cheese was just a huge clump, the soup tasted off, and the avocado in my salad was half black. The line to order was short, 1 person ahead of us, but quite a few people were waiting for food. Once we ordered, it took 45 minutes to get our food. The employee wearing the single Air Pod frustrated us multiple times. Unfortunately, the most interesting occasion occurred when I asked for a missing item. She began muttering extreme profanities - not your average shit or damn - and yelling at coworkers that they need to read back orders. Our receipt was correct. The service was abysmal. I ordered one of the "special" drinks that was advertised for some charity. Was not provided to me when I got my meal. Waited several minutes and then went back to the delivery counter only to be rudely told that they would call me. Was almost finished with my meal and still not called. Then went to the front counter and asked about my drink. Again a rude response about calling my name, I refused to let this slide and told her I had waited long enough. She then made my frozen strawberry lemonade. I had taken my daughter there for her birthday and the service provided was terrible and the frozen strawberry lemonade was not even that good! Buongiorno a túttí! Last night I went to Panera for dinner. I took my order to go which was no problem. They were pretty bz though I'm sure from online orders. I was standing there at the counter a good 10 minutes whilst everyone who came in AFTER me were helped. The cashier was new I believe, but had a "seasoned" cashier training him, which also was no problem. Now I have patience and I understand the trng. process very well. After a good 10-12 minutes someone FINALLY (I was the only one in line after they took everyone who came in behind me) came to help me but I tell you, even if people are in line, after they ring out one they walk away to BS to each other and that perturbed me to no end. The cashier finally came and asked if I needed help. yes I said and ordered a sandwich a Greek salad tomato soup and my drink. the same thing Ive gotten for years. Now the turkey is no longer real turkey and that was disgustingly awful. Panera needs to put back the bacon turkey (REAL) avocado sandwich instead of charging an arm & a leg for a crappy sandwich for which IF I wanted crap turkey I'd go to the grocery store an buy a pkg of it. the soup was cold and the good drinks are behind the counter. I mix the flavors b'cuz they're so good yet not this time. What happened to Panera????? Im so disappointed in what they have done in the store. I stopped going because they took the BTA sandwiches off the menu but Im in Topeka Ks attending my son's funeral. RIP son all that food was $45.00!! Disappointed. The quality of the food has continued to decline the past 2 years. Today was just another example. I went into the restaurant and placed a To Go order. 1 bowl of Chicken and Wild rice with the fruit side and the Mexican Corn Chowder with the baguette bread as the side. I was informed that they were out of bread and fruit, this was at 11:30am. How does Panera not have THEIR restaurant staple of bread and an apple?? Neither of these are new to the menu. The only option were chips or a fruit cup. I did take the fruit cup but declined the chips. Next I wanted to order one of their signature cut out frosted sugar cookie. This time of year is the "flipflop" cookie. They no longer sell those. REALLY??? THIS ONE THE ONE GOOD THING YOU STILL HAD GOING. The new option is a mass produced tasteless shortbread cookie with a white waxed frosting. NOT EVEN CLOSE to what was previously available. I will never purchase another one of those again. If I could give a zero I would. Almost all of the tables were dirty, poor customer service, the food was not great. When asked to restock the lids they gave us the stack to restock for them. Too expensive for what I have got. The employees and the menu on the wall does not help at all in terms of: what you are ordering and what you are getting "by surprise". Ex. I ordered a smokehouse turkey on three cheese. For my surprise I got just 3/4 of a single slice of turkey on a regular wheat squared bread sandwich. The mac and cheese was more like a mac dipped in a flavored cheese water. If you have a sandwich, who wants another piece of blank bread on the side. Food was cold. They have one vegan item marked on the menu. It's a quinoa bowl. They didn't have any "made up" when I ordered but assured me it was no problem to prepare one. I ordered to order another vegan item off of the menu if they could tell me what that might be, but they were (politely) insistent that the quinoa bowl was no problem. I was surprised to see that the item was more of a soup than a rice bowl, which is what I was expecting. It was really good. It had lemon and kale in it as well as some other grains. read more

Way better options to choose from that are nearby. When Panera first opened at another state where I lived I used to go there often. Their places were always clean, staff was usually pleasant and the food was good. Yes I am aware that prices for things go up but $30+ for sandwiches and some soup isn't worth it. Now, have I paid $30+ for soup and sandwiches somewhere else? Yes. Why? Because the quality was far better and the establishment was cleaner. Can I also just say that I wish they stopped with the bread/chips or apple option as a side item? The apple you get is the least best of the apples. Washington apples are chalky, wish they would switch to Gala or Fiji. Their menu items have been the same since forever and I kinda wish they would re-vamp it. I do like their salads and that's usually my go-to if we decide to come here. For this specific location though, it's dirty. I know that many places are currently struggling right now with keeping people and keeping up with many restaurant duties but when I see 6 staff members just hanging around, not doing anything but gossip and use foul language while a lady sits nearby with her table of kids, not good. Apparently the bus sitting outside was carrying softball players from Nebraska, so it took a little longer than usual. No problem, I waited patiently. After about 30 minutes of waiting I was called to the counter and told they no longer have the Autumn Squash soup and asked if I would like a different soup. My son is currently on a liquid diet and I thought the soup would be perfect so I said no that I was there specifically for that soup and was offered a refund. It's no problem if they no longer had the soup, that's why I called ahead of time. I was told sorry and offered no consolation for their error or my time. Wow wow wow. I've never seen a Panera in such disarray. We went in for dinner and the restaurant was busy and they were out of the breads used for the each of the sandwiches we wanted to order. They were also out of the soup we wanted and out of pastries that are offered as part of the 99 cent add on. The store was in quite the mess with the tables full of crumbs that I had to wipe down my own table. The pagers were not working so the kitchen was calling out names to pick up the order. Good thing that I was waiting at the pick up counter waiting for our food because they never actually called my name. This store, at this time was in over their heads. I don't know if this is the norm for this location but it was in shambles. The food we ended up with was fine, and that was the only thing that saved the visit. We just had an excellent visit this week! We had the maple bacon and egg wraps and coffee/juice and all were delicious! Also, took a lot of goodies home like the egg soufflés which are the best...and a few bagels and sweet treats too! The restaurant was very clean, and the service was great! The kitchen staff was fine and worked through our group order quickly, however, the cashier Angela was horribly rude. She would tell some people in the group certain items weren't available, then tell the next people they were. She was very short and snappy with people and got many peoples orders wrong. Felt like purposeful mistakes to be spiteful for whatever reason. This location should really reconsider who they have up front as the first person to interact with their customers, because this woman was one of the rudest encounters we've had visiting a good place. read more

Just moved to Topeka and went here for my Greek Salad. I have had these at other Paneras all the time and was never disappointed. Today I ordered the 1/2 and it did not even fill half of the bowl and only 2 olives which I like. When I took it back to the pick-up counter and politely asked for more, the manager standing there with two workers just looked at me and no one said anything. Then the manager spoke to one young man who added more lettuce and a few slices of tomato and handed it to me saying nothing. No apology or concern or anything. The other young man then felt bad for me and said it depends on who makes it and he apologized. Still nothing from the female manager. For me, Panera is Panera which means "ok". That's how I felt about this location - it was pretty clean, the staff seemed pleasant and the wifi was glacially slow. I do appreciate calorie counts on the menu board and the addition of "power" sandwiches/salads. I had a breakfast sandwich which was quite tasty and only 340cal. What stood out for me at this location was the patrons - who had an average age of about 85 or so. There was a big table of old guys hanging out and overhearing their conversation was highly entertaining - it ranged from chicken farming (and chickens in general) to a debate on whether possums were vegetarian or not. If you order take out, check your order twice before leaving the place. They didn't put the chocolate chip cookie in our order. Called on 7-21-22 after getting home and told employee no cookie. I was told a gift card for the amount of the cookie would be sent- like #1. Called back on 8-1-22 and talked to manager Will. He said a gift card would be sent - lie #2. On a fixed income so getting carry out was a treat. Now it's the principle of being lied to twice. Don't think we need to go there anymore. They don't seem to care about customer service. The parking lot was kind of awkward to get into, the place smelled a lil funky when I walked in. The funky smell kind if concerned me, but I've worked in fast food, and watched people unknowingly receive sickening foods, so I just said, meh, I'm hungey and don't want to bother finding another place! First time at Panera in Kansas. Good experience here. Came during lunch time, so there was a line, but it's to be expected. Staff was very courteous when I ordered. I ordered a Greek Salad with Broccoli and Chese soup. They were both very good. When I asked for hot sauce, they only had one Tabasco sauce packet available and there was literally only one left, so that kinda stank, but at least they tried to accommodate me. I also ordered their iced Chai tea. Not super impressed by it. I think the Chai spice was a little too overpowering for my taste, so I had to add my own cream to made it a little more mild. Overall, good location and variety for lunch. Would come again, but definitely order something different for a drink. read more

This Panera is usually pretty good. They're faster than other Paneras I've been to and the staff seems fairly organized. I've never had a bad sandwich though sometimes the soup is way too hot or way too cold. I wish they had a drive-thru like they do at some other Paneras because sometimes I'm in a hurry and don't have time to go in for lunch. read more
