Tried this place on a whim and so far have been a fan. When I come into Montrose for shopping and such, I usually like to grab some lunch. I had this place pop-up on yelp or something decided to head on in and give it a try. I have two main staples that I usually get. One is the barbecue pork appetizer and a side of steamed rice, which is huge and the other, barbecued spareribs. Both of them have always been good and hit the spot. Not very many gluten free options, their dishes don't have descriptions in the menu, and my dish wasn't very flavorful or substantial. I am a vegetarian and I have a gluten intolerance, which I acknowledge is a very difficult combination, but lots of Asian restaurants I have gone to in the past have good options for this combination. In their menu the names of the dishes were listed in Mandarin and English. I understand listing in both languages but I would have also appreciated descriptions of the ingredients and what type of sauce went with each dish. Not only does this help choose a dish you will enjoy but helps people with allergies find dishes safe for them. My waitress was very nice and helpful but the dish she recommended was super underwhelming. It was a plate of seemingly raw snow peas, a few water chestnuts and carrots, a very light white sauce, and rice. I would have appreciated a better veggie distribution (fewer snow peas and more other veggies), a more flavorful sauce, and enough sauce to flavor the rice. I saw many other people enjoying their meals here so I don't want to claim my experience was representative of the restaurant as a whole. Besides the food the staff were kind, helpful, and attentive. Our takeout dinners were chicken and vegetables and honey walnut shrimp..both with steamed rice. The rice was fluffy and moist. Vegetables were crisp not soggy. Chicken was perfect as well as the shrimp. Servings were quite generous...enough for another meal. A+...we highly recommend! read more

After spending the day exploring Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park just outside the city of Montrose, Colorado....I had a craving for Chinese comfort food. On a whim, I found Panda Palace and it was EXACTLY what I was looking for! Stepping inside the restaurant on a Sunday evening, the place was relatively crowded with a pleasant atmosphere and I just knew I had a good omen about coming here. One entire page of the menu is dedicated to Combination Dinners. This is pretty much the only section you need to look at on the menu unless you're interested in something specific. They offer 4 options... A - Canton Dinner - $15.95 per person. B - Peking Dinner - $16.95 per person C - Panda Palace Dinner - $19.95 per person D - Complete Dinner - $11.50 - $12 per person. I chose Complete Dinner D. It came with soup to start. I chose Wonton Soup which was served in a small cup and just enough as a quick starter. You then get an appetizer....BOTH egg roll AND a piece of fried shrimp that was unique, tasty and different to what I'm used to seeing at typical generic Chinese restaurants. AND THEN...I got my entree, chicken and garlic sauce with fried rice. WOW THAT'S A LOT OF FOOD! ALL FOR $11.50!!! BARGAIN OF THE CENTURY! And being honest...the food surely met my expectations. The whole meal offered so much that I took home half my dinner. It was just hard to believe getting a 3 course meal for $11.50 with the food being prepared fresh to order and hot! I really have to say Panda Palace deserves a lot more recognition....unless maybe all the restaurants in Montrose are like this. I'm just a tourist from Florida, lol. Finishing up, all Combination Dinners have 3 courses and for your entree, you have 7 - 8 options to choose from...more than enough to find what you're looking for. Also, service was fast...you could tell this is a no frills, no messing around kinda place. People were ordering carryout and pickup, though I'm not sure if they do deliveries...but I would think so. Overall I couldn't have asked for anything better than Panda Palace....especially coming from running all over, hiking and spending a full day at Black Canyon of the Gunnison. OMG! So good. So fast. So friendly. A coworker suggested this place during a recent work trip to Montrose. I had about 45 minutes for lunch between meetings, and I was in and out of this place so quickly! The food was hot and fresh. I was worried it would be reheated frozen food, but the veggies were crisp! I am slightly confused on the reviews stating this place is full of rude workers. High school students were in and out of the place while I was eating due to the location being across from the high school. One student, while joking around with other students, spilled his take out all over the floor. Boring food and very Americanized. The chicken was dry. The take out we ordered came out so fast that I realized that they must keep it in steamer bins instead of cooking to order. Traditional Chinese is cooked to order and really fresh. The fried rice was also dry and gummy. I have traveled in Asia and was an ESL teacher for many years and many of my adult students came from all over the East. They loved to invite me to their homes where I got to enjoy the best Chinese food and we often went to very authentic restaurants where the food is cooked as it is ordered . Enjoyed an early dinner of Kung Pao Chicken and Shrimp with Mixed Veggies. Decent Chinese food in this little town, shrimp and veggies were fresh, crunchy and perfectly prepared. Kung Pao Chicken was tasty, though I'm always expecting more veggies than the dish provides.
