If you've ever been to the US, you've probably seen Panda Express. It's moniker is Gourmet Chinese. I dropped by the new location in the Albany Shopping Centre and as my rating notes, it was very so-so. It all tasted okay (but not spectacular), but the portion sizes were very small compared to most other places. For a place that labels itself "Gourmet Chinese", I expected much more flavour. The food here, while freshly made, tasted about the same as you might get a mall Chinese food place like Manchu Wok. For around $12, we got a small takeout container with a cup or so of chow mein (fried noodles), a Chicken and green bean dish and some sweet-and-sour shrimp. We also got another much, much smaller (about the size of smartphone) with Teriyaki chicken in it, which I thought was very strange, as it isn't Chinese cuisine at all. It says it is Cantonese Chinese cuisine, but based on the spice level of the food I sampled, I'd say it's closer to Szechuan than Cantonese. Finally, what kind of Chinese restaurant sells Teriyaki Chicken? Frankly, if you're looking for quick cheap Chinese in the northend, you're better off driving to T&T at Northtown Mall.

    My 3 items combo.
Fried rice, beef ribs (extra $1.50) and beef with broccoli
Don't let the pic fool you, the tray is not that big.

Just to be clear, this is not affiliated with Panda Hut Express on the south side. This is part of the franchise that originated in the US. As an Asian, yes, there are times I do crave some good old westernized Chinese food (though will never compare to authentic Chinese dishes). And with my parents now retired and no longer having their restaurant, I don't get my fix as much. So I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the first Panda Express in Edmonton was opening by me. First impression is that it is nice and clean. The people that work there are always friendly and will greet you. Now about the food. For the most part, I don't think western Chinese food can be really ranked as high or great, it's either edible or not. The food here is edible, I'm happy to say, but that's just the 2 times I've gone. Like any place, there could be off nights. They don't seem to make lots in the trays, which is in a way good, that way you don't get served food that has been in there a long time. I ordered the 3 items combo, the fried rice, beef ribs (extra $1.50) and beef/broccoli to go (just under $11) My only complaint is that the take-out trays are not that big, so what you get seems not that much. I don't know whether if you eat in, the plates may have a bit more, as both times I have taken it to go. Let's just say, I wouldn't eat here as my main dinner, but more for a bite to tide me over for a couple of hours. There is a place at the food court at my work, where for $9, I get 3 items and great portions, and I'm stuffed for most of the day. So if you're in the area and just have a craving for some basic western Chinese food, I'd recommend driving about 5 minutes down to 127 st/137 Ave to Lucky Super Market. They have 4 combos for $7.99, so better deal and probably better portions.

    The serving line.

The quest for better Chinese food brought me to... oh wait, that's not it. The need for fast filling food brought me to the Panda Express tonight. It was prime dinner time and I was starving so when I saw the restaurant's bright neon signs, I did not hesitate. The first impression is good, the place is bright clean and well maintained. The second thought was: "hmmm... it is prime dinner time, the place is empty!!!" Alarm bells kind of rang. I surveyed the minimal amount of food which was on display, the beef dish looked okay, there were a couple of shrimp dishes; I was starving so I decided to stay and ordered the two entrees with one side for $8.80. Your choice of sides were: fried rice, chow mein, mixed vegetables or steamed rice; chose the chow mein. Time to choose the entrees: "I will have the beef and the shrimps" "Sir, they are both our premium entrees, would you like to pay an extra $1.50 each for them" "no, which ones are your regular entrees" "the chicken dishes down there" In summary, if you don't want to pay premium, you get the choice between 3 types of chickens and a beef & broccoli dish. Then comes more upselling: "would you like to add 3 pot stickers for $2.50." - I may have the prices wrong,my hearing is not the best. "no thank you" - staring at the anemic miniature potstickers "how about some egg rolls for $3.50" "hmmm, no" - the eggrolls were soggy, looked like they were fried hours ago By now, my server sounded annoyed over my constant refusal to the upselling, "THEN, IT IS $9.25" but but but, I wanted a drink... Food wise, the chow mein is really equal parts of noodles and cabbage, there is a slight hint of cumin or 5 spice, the flavor is not bad by fast food standards except that both the noodles and cabbage were undercooked; the noodles were beyond al-dante and the cabbage still tasted raw. The orange chicken was bad, the chicken pieces were over-batter and grossly over-fried, it required all of my might to bite into each morsel; the overly sweet thick syrupy sauce make this dish virtually inedible. The beef and broccoli was pretty good, beef was tender and the broccoli pieces were still crunchy. Service wise, the restaurant needs to understand that constant upselling only drives customers away from future visits. The establishment itself was pleasant. The food was okay at best. Would I return, may be, only if I am starving and this is the only place open within a 5 miles radius. I do see a few good reviews for the place, but judging from the lack of customers at the restaurant right at prime dinner time (6:30pm), I would say, things have changed and people are not returning. During my entire visit (I ate my meal there) only one other group came in for two take out meals; the lack of turnover would explain the sad state of the food on display.

The orange chicken is the best part. If you get an order with 2 meat items, double up on the orange chicken. The beef tastes funny.

Open since 1947 (that's…read more78 years!!!) you would be hard pressed to find an Edmontonian that doesn't have some sort of relationship with this famed Chinese restaurant, its food, or the family who runs it. Speaking of the Quons, they have become celebrities in their own right especially after their family was featured in a season of the TV series The Family Restaurant in 2009 followed by The Quon Dynasty in 2011. The matriarch of the family, Amy Quon, is well known for her warm and friendly demeanor and the way that she takes time to visit with guests. The Lingnan was the first Chinese restaurant in Edmonton and most people would likely tell you that it remains the best. VUE Weekly named The Lingnan the #1 Best Chinese 2018. The Edmonton Journal has voted them Best/Favourite Chinese Restaurant 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. And EDify Magazine awarded them the Best Chinese Restaurant 2023 title. The list of accolades is long and with good reason. I have personally eaten at The Lingnan many times over the years and I have always appreciated their quality and consistency. I decided to pay them a visit on a recent Sunday evening to revisit this Chinese institution. Located in Central McDougall right behind Rogers Place, the restaurant's tall vertical signage and red and yellow paint cannot be mistaken. They've also got a really cool mural painted on the side of the building. The interior is impressive, expansive, and ornate. Entering the restaurant you'll first be greeted by a life-size bronze statue of a Chinese warrior. Next you'll marvel at their large (and very clean!) aquarium stocked with giant goldfish. The space will take your breath away and there is certainly no where else like it in the city. Every inch is beautifully decorated and the colours of red and gold create the palette. Intricate Chinese lanterns hang from the ceiling. The tiling, the art, and the gilded accents stretch as far as the eye can see. There are at least three different dining rooms and many of these areas can be sectioned off to create even more spaces. Each table is covered with a white table cloth and servers in traditional Chinese clothing hurry about the room. A reservation is highly recommended because even on a Sunday night every single table was occupied and there was a lineup of people waiting to be seated. The Lingnan's patrons are loyal, many of them having spent their entire lives eating meals at the restaurant. A feast for the eyes, simply dining at The Lingnan is an experience in itself. Once seated and settled it was difficult to ignore the flurry of activity all around. Happy customers enjoying their meals, the aroma of delicious plates of food passing by, and the gorgeous jade-coloured ceiling with a dragon in the center of it. Looking for a beverage to match the atmosphere, a warm cup of Chinese Jasmine Tea would've been a wonderful choice. However, I ventured to the cocktail menu for something a bit more special. The China Moon (Soho Lychee, Hipnotiq, Blue Curacao, pineapple - $10.00) caught my attention. A beautiful green-hued beverage to match the ceiling overhead! I appreciated the list of custom cocktails, created to suit the restaurant. Seemingly a modern addition, these drinks elevate the dining experience by complimenting the food and overall ambiance. I loved this sweet, easy-drinking beverage and the flavours of lychee and pineapple were a delight. It's very chic to be sitting with a China Moon in hand. Like any good Chinese restaurant, take-out is a major component of the business. However, another more recent update has been the addition of a buffet. For the exceedingly reasonable price of $31 (every day of the week) you can feast upon some of The Lingnan's most popular dishes. I have enjoyed the buffet on several occasions in the past but on this particular visit I was interested in sampling some of the restaurants more upscale and unique dishes. But first let's take a moment for the Dry Spicy Chicken. An entire blog could be written about this dish alone. In fact, this chicken used to have its own restaurant. A true staple Edmontonian dish and affectionately nicknamed "crack chicken," we all mourn the loss of Chicken for Lunch. Operating out of the Rice Howard Place food court (lunchtime on weekdays only) and run by Amy Quon herself, this place used to attract immense lineups. Why? I mean, they did sell a variety of items but everyone was there for the addictive Hot and Dry chicken. Amy always treated everyone like they were someone special and she still does. With Chicken for Lunch gone, all is not lost because this famous chicken is still on the menu at The Lingnan! Available in both appetizer and entree sizes, I could not imagine visiting the restaurant without ordering it. On this visit I went for the Appetizer Dry Spicy Chicken ("Amy's Chicken." Breast meat strips lightly battered and stir fried with our home made chili oil
