We stopped by Tokyo Express while on errands. It had been a while since we'd had any and always enjoyed the "Teriyaki Beef Bowl". We got one to go, and when we got home and dumped it out, it was clear that something had changed. Instead of the usual looking Teriyaki sauce, it looked like ordinary beef gravy! Not transparent as usual, but more creamy - basically, gravy. Tasting it, we realized that it had zero teriyaki flavor. It was gravy. I am a huge fan of Japanese cuisine, and I like nothing more than sitting down to a great meal. But sometimes... you want it fast, cheap and to go. Enter Tokyo Express. Though I have only eaten in a few locations around the city, this one is, to my mind, far and away the best of the lot. The food is always fresh and the service is excellent. I have been going here for well over 20 years, and even before they moved into larger quarters across the street. I have, at various times tried pretty much everything on the menu and I have never been disappointed, though I do have my favourites. I consider the Teriyaki Rice Bowl to be a wonderful comfort favourite, along with the Shrimp Rice, or Noodle bowl, and the Unagi. (BBQ Eel) The sushi is very good for a fast food spot, though the pieces are a tad small. The prices are reasonable, and the place is always clean and well maintained. If you are looking for low rent Japanese at a good price, you can't do better than Tokyo Express, Oliver Square. *My 5 star score here is based on comparison to other Tokyo Exp locations. read more

I am surprised at the low rating this restaurant has received. Maybe the sushi snobs don't think it's good enough. But in the day and age of food trucks, eating on the go has come a very long way. Especially in busy cities like Edmonton. Sure, the sushi may not be top quality or even professional quality. But when you're in a pinch for time, or don't want to spend $60 on a meal - then I definitely recommend Tokyo Express. For one, this restaurant has been operating for as long as I've lived downtown - or longer. I've been going there for years. When you have a hankering for maki rolls or a cone, and you're in a hurry, this is the place to go. It's true, it is. That not all Tokyo Expresses are good. I couldn't eat sushi for two years after having food poisoning from the West Edmonton Mall location. But my love for sushi returned and I've found a few favorite places to satisfy my addiction. If you're a sushi "snob", this is not the place for you. If you're a downtown business person, or don't have time to stop for a full dinner, then Oliver Square's Tokyo Express gets my vote. I like this Tokyo Express location more than most, partially as it is large with ample seating and the service I receive here is really quite good. The menu is pretty standard for a Tokyo Express location -- in so far as fast food sushi goes on the prairies it isn't bad. The cooked food is well labeled for the folks who are seeking out food without any raw fish. Sometimes I just eat the miso udon. Portions are quite ample and it is a great place for a quick snack. I like the water refill station. The bento boxes are really filling. And the rolls are pretty good too. read more

I went in search of some vegetarian tempura. They list on their menu, "prawn" tempura, and "assorted" tempura. I asked at the counter if they could do a vegetarian tempura. I had lunch at Tokyo Express today and it was yum yum yummy! I wasn't sure what I wanted when I went in so I asked the girl at the counter a couple questions and asked for her recommendation. She actually recommended something cheaper than I had chosen and I'm so glad she did. I saved money and my lunch was delicious! I had the Mexican rolls. They were just like California rolls but they were stuffed with spicy tuna. They were REALLY good. The staff was so friendly, they honestly made my day. Random acts of kindness are the best! I often head to Tokyo Express when I want a lunch that is healthy and satisfying. Tokyo Express serves sushi and Japanese cuisine quickly. The lineups at lunch time are often enormous. My preferences include the salmon rice bowl, which has quite a large piece of pan-fried salmon on top, served with sesame sauce. I also enjoy varieties of vegetarian sushi. The quality of most of the food is average to above average, depending on the day and what you order. It certainly is not on par with most non-fast food Japanese restaurants. Not unlike any other Tokyo Express! This location offered the same as any other. The service is quick, efficient and friendly. The menu here is not unlike most Japanese fast food joints. Offering a variety of Bento boxes, noodle/rice bowls, tempura, sushi rolls and other popular side dishes. I usually go with a Bento with dumplings and spring rolls. I've gone with the chicken lately because the beef resembles deli style roast beef and that just isn't my thing... But there are lots of Bento combinations to go with, something to please everyone's palate I'm sure! What I like about this location is how clean it always is! You're not expected to clear your tray so it's nice to see that the tables are maintained regularly. The only downfall of this place is its hours. I'm not big on sushi, so I was relieved to see that they had rice bowls. I ended up getting the teriyaki chicken. It was a bit busy, but I waited a long time for my food. I'm glad I had the free ice water to keep me busy. The food ended up being okay, but there were hardly any veggies, so that was dissapointing. I check out this Tokyo Express when I'm craving sushi - during their business hours. It seems they also supply to the Safeway in the same parking lot and the 7-11 on 107th Ave and 116th St. The rice bowls are good though I can't eat them since I discovered my soy allergy. I like that you can choose to have the chicken skinless but if you forget to say so, you get skin by default. The location is a definite improvement. They used to be on the other side of 116th St in Oliver Square in sort of a cramped spot. It used to be very difficult to get around in there. So location and space wise, this is certainly better. read more

It's really pretty good if you come into Tokyo Express with the proper expectations. Grabbing lunch here with some gal pals, our food came out pretty quickly, all things considered. (It's a really busy spot for downtown lunchionatos.) I appreciate the tap, so you can refill your water yourself. There's tons of seating in here, so no matter how busy it gets, there's never a problem grabbing a table. The tempura here is pretty decent, and I actually really like their veggie maki. I've been going to this Tokyo Express for years and I love it. The food's so fresh and the service is super fast, even if you walk in and there's a line to the door, it's but minutes before you're at the front of the line-up. The amount of staff during busy periods is well-planned and adequate. They're swift and efficient at the till, I just find the wait to get the food a bit annoying (You have to wait for your number to be called out). But on the pro side, it's always clean here. The soy sauce bottles are well-replenished and fresh. I like how they have a cold water and ice dispenser you can access yourself. I always order the dynamite rolls. They're delicious. I've also tried the Mexican rolls which has a bit of tempura in them that's crunchy and yummy. Mind you, this is Japanese fast food. If you go to a higher-end restaurant, you'll taste the difference in freshness, flavour and presentation. I used to get the teriyaki chicken bowl without skin here, but started finding the sauce was too sweet and sugary, so it cancelled out the health factor of eating skinless chicken and veggies on rice. They have bento boxes with a little of everything if you want to sample. Coming in for six rolls has always tided me over on the way home when I'm starving. I've been going to this Tokyo Express for over 10 years and the quality is amazingly consistent. I dine in or order takeout from them once or twice a month and just recently ordered delivery with the same great - fast, no-fuss - service at a reasonable price point. The place is spacious and very carefully maintained. I particularly like their dragon eye rolls, but I've had many a chicken teriyaki bowl, veggie tempura and bento boxes over the years, with the occasional cones and maki rolls. The chicken bowl, even without the extra chicken option, is usually a bit more than I can eat in one sitting, unless I am unusually hungry. I'll definitely keep coming back. read more

Toyko Express is what you see is what you get. I go in knowing it is not fancy dining, I order knowing it is not high cuisine, and I leave full knowing I didn't spend very much. I really miss their saki and licensed beverages, not sure wny they stopped selling alcohol. Anyways, it will sustain you, and will help you fill the hunger pains, but don't expect the best. I score them as OK as they are usually rather slow in cleaning tables, but otherwise it is fast food the Japanese way. read more

I must say that the server, Johnny, is very rude in helping us. We were unclear about some dishes on their menu and asked him to briefly eloborate on some items, so that we can make a better choice. However, as we asked a question, he would become very impatient and told us to order something right away as he didn't have time to explain things. If there is such a thing as Japanese fast food, Tokyo Express is it. I have been coming here for ages, and the food is consistently good. The service is always speedy, even during peak hours when the restaurant is crowded and is at its busiest. The menu was recently expanded a little bit, and now consists of miso soup, rolls/sushi/maki, tempura, udon noodle, teriyaki beef and chicken with either noodles or rice and bento boxes. If I am on the run, I prefer to grab something from Tokyo Express rather than any fast food restaurant because their food is guilt-free for me. As with any Japanese food, I feel full but not like my stomach is filled with rocks. The reason Tokyo Express manages to serve good food so fast is because there are always severals cooks working in the kitchen. The longest time I have ever had to wait was 10 minutes. You can order take out or dine inside - the place is meticulously clean. The prices are very reasonable. read more

pros -salmon and tuna sashimi is great -chicken bowl is good -salmon bowl is ok too -noodles taste good but very high in sodium since they are drenched in sauce -bento box is ok -everything is fresh in the morning -fast food cons -leftover mako combos are frozen and left overnight, they get really dry next day -chicken usually sells out but the beef is leftover and it dries up fast also -leftover rice is left in these giant cookers and sometimes I find centipedes inside(I still visit once in awhile but I never eat the rice anymore because I remember seeing the centipedes) -they don't clean the top and bottom of the machines in the kitchen so sometimes you will find silverfish and cockroaches running around -they pour a shitton of soy sauce into a big vat to make the teriyaki sauce it makes the sodium content is extremely high -often you will see the sushi guy with clear gloves on while hes making sushi rolls but he also keeps those gloves on when he goes to the toilet, answers the phone or checks the inventory(wuts the point of having gloves if you are gonna touch everything with them?) My approach 1. I disapprove when it comes to the sushi. Order the sashimi if you can. 2. If you aren't going for fish, order the chicken bowl. Go with NO RICE more veggies(veggies after 2PM are usually leftovers tho but chicken is always fresh) 3. Don't visit the restaurant after 2PM because most of the food left has been sitting around for hours. 4. Extra sauce? Extra sauce on the side? Order at your own risk. Easily 1000mg+ sodium in 1 bowl. Suggested daily sodium intake is only 2000mg so 1 meal would take up half or more. 5. The teriyaki sauce is high in sodium but it has been cooked. On the other hand, the soy sauce they have in the jars, happens to be very dirty. They fill the jars with a dirty container that is never washed and they wipe the spouts of the jar with a dirty grease rag. I've worked at the oliver square location for 2 months in the past. I chose to leave because the workers in the kitchen were extremely offensive. TE would lose large portion of their customer base If only the customers could understand the racist and slanderous remarks that the employees would spew. read more
