Not quite as good as El Mejor Pan, but still very tasty. OK selection, but not the overwhelming number of choices like at El Mejor. Cream-filled pastries are especially good. read more

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and a must visit! We happened upon this bakery on our way back to the Tecate…read moreboarder (12 min walk to the boarder). So glad we found it! The moment you walk in, you catch all of the yummy aromas of the bakery. You grab a tray and tongs and get to browse and choose all kinds of beautiful Mexican baked goods. The cashier was nice and efficient. All of the baked goods were the best that I've had! I cannot wait to come back!

This is some of the most dry and flavorless pastries I've ever had. It was painfully easy to spend US$60 here for about $6 dollars worth of flavor. I'm still amazed that they ruined a simple cream filled pie and anything that was supposed to be chocolate flavored was sadly void of even a hint of a chocolate flavor. Given the name "The Best Bread in Tecate" along with the higher than normal prices - I was expecting some incredible pastries and breads, but that wasn't the case here. Maybe it's fallen victim to its own fame where the quality is dropped to keep up with demand

Hands down the best pie I've ever had was from CA mountain bakery. Even a frozen pie that I cooked at home was amazing, Of course when I was there to pick up the to go pie, we decided to try their breakfast sandwich and apple pie with cinnamon ice cream...everything was so good. Oh and I did order frozen pot pies to eat at home and I really enjoyed it as well. I know Julian may not be a place many of you thought of checking out but this place alone makes ir worth the drive. The small town of Julian is adorable and I highly recommend you go at some point. They are known for apple everything ~ cider, etc.,
I found my favorite pie shop…read more I heard that California Mountain Bakery is the best pie shop in California so me and one other person had to put it to the test. We made the drive out to grab one of their pies to bring back and try. I was impressed they had 8 different types of pies the day we came. The staff was really nice and answered all our questions. We ended up getting their Summerberry Apple pie which was an apple pie with all sorts of berries in it. It was absolutely insanely delicious. It was perfectly sweeten, had the perfect filling to crust ratio, and the crumble on top was heavenly. It was a hit with our friends back home and highly addicting. I recommend it. Besides their popular pies they also had cinnamon buns, cookies, sweet and savory pastries. I did also get a blueberry scone which was alright but I probably wouldn't get again. California Mountain Bakery also has a full food menu which carries items like sandwiches. The restaurant is pretty large. You order at the register and they'll call you when its ready. There's a whole dining area inside and out. I would most definitely be back and highly recommend them.

The moment you walk through the door, the smell of fresh baked pan hits you and it is everything. The selection of pan dulce and bolillos had me feeling like I was back in Mexico City. So many options, beautifully displayed. That part alone almost made the trip worth it. But the customer service... yeah, I'm not the only one who noticed. I asked the lady at the register in Spanish if there was any chocolate pan de muerto and she completely ignored me. Like, didn't even look up. Just called someone from the back in Spanish, which, mija, I understood every word. The girl who came to help me was a little better but not much. She told me the chocolate pan de muerto was sold out, which fine, I get it, it was a holiday. But that's literally all you had to say. No smile, no "sorry we're out," nothing. Just took my money and that was that. The panadería itself deserves five stars. The staff needs some work. I'll probably go back for the pan because it really is that good, but I'm keeping my expectations low on the service side.

So I'm guilty of not making the trek into Ramona for the full experience, but I snagged one of…read moretheir blueberry pies for Christmas when I saw them sitting at Frazier Farms! They were sitting right next to the Julian pies and it kinda looked like a fight, like a battle of the mountain bakeries kind of fight. Needless to say, I grabbed both because everyone immediately glorifies the Julian pie so by including the Ramona pie, my objective was to introduce some low risk novelty for my Christmas get-together. I didn't have high hopes for Ramona's blueberry because I was suspicious of the huge bready looking crust roll in combination with the sticker on the front boasting "no seed oils". I'm not fluent in baking alchemy. I was raised on Costco pie (bleh). So, I thought this was going to be dry and overly sweet but much to my whole family's surprise, Ramona was the winner! My takeaway: Do not discriminate the chubby crust roll! Take it from me because I'm a savage that eats a pie right out of the fridge. The crust is like a shortbread cookie. It's almost on the Italian pastry spectrum. Very delicious. Very coffee friendly. The blueberry filling was also perfectly balanced. It wasn't too sweet and even with the crumble topping, I felt like I could eat it with yogurt in the morning and trick myself into calling it a wholesome breakfast. Now, I'm going to say this with a huge shield up... but it knocked the Julian apple pie way off the shelf for me.
