I've been to many, many coffee shops through my early adult years, but the first I started going to…read moreon a frequent basis was The Foundry, located right off the downtown square of Tyler, sitting on the first floor just beneath Bethel Bible Church. Though The Foundry is ultimately connected to Bethel as their nonprofit, and many Bethel members spend time there, it misses the mark of being what feels like a "Christian coffee shop". Instead feels like a coffee shop that is driven by God, which is a very important difference to make. The Foundry is welcoming to all and is a place of peace for all. Their space is quite large, with plenty of tables of all sizes in the back, bar seating, and more. There is an outside coffee garden space that is peaceful if you happen to be around during the three weeks where Texas weather is bearable. There are also a few tables in front of the shop. There's a room that always displays local artists' work. The Foundry roasts all their own beans under Porch Culture. The team behind Porch Culture seems to have a genuine care and passion for coffee roasting, which they obviously benefits from. Certain days in the shop, you can see them roasting and experimenting in the back. I, of course, had to leave with a bag of beans to take back to Austin with me. Recently, upon my trip back home, I had a vanilla latte of theirs, which was great, plus a cinnamon roll, which was delectable. They can get pretty busy on a Sunday before a Bethel service starts, but their team usually seems on top of it most times I visit and are all very friendly and talkative. I missed The Foundry. From my time in high school when I'd go to study, or through college breaks where I used it to get out of the house and work on side projects, it was a great place to hide out, and it still is as good as I remember. RIYL: That warm coffee smell and a good co-working space.

Space to study. It was nice and clean inside. I can see parking being a little of a hassle, but overall doable with the parking garage nearby. We loved the matcha latte and can't wait to come back to try the coffee.

It is painful to post a less-than-complimentary review after such a friendly welcome and good…read moreservice. The first problem was the difficulty parking in the tiny space available. And, the food! Perplexed as I am by the more favorable reviews, I must be honest. Based only on the lunch specials, we could find little to redeem in the food. Even the iced tea was undrinkable. Guacamole that looks and tastes like store-bought is unacceptable. If it can't be freshly made without any kind of creamy filler, don't bother. The refried beans were cold. The chips and taco shell were Old El Paso wannabes. The cheese enchilada was uninspired. The only redeeming item was the beef taco filling; that was well done. I'm always pulling for locally owned restaurants, but this one needs to be repurposed, sadly.

Their salsa is also quite good. They have a big menu. The owner/chef has been in the food business for a very LONG time (cooked at 'El Charro' for 20 years-- an old Tyler institution!) They have a wide range of beverages (alcoholic and other) -- I only had a soft drink -- but many other people were getting lots of different types of drinks. I am going back there soon. I also submitted an update, but: be aware -- they are now located on ENE Loop 323 (just around the corner from their previous location).

Hand-dipped caramel apples taken to the nines with a plethora of toppings like Oreos, peanut butter, Rice Krispies, Circus Animals, pretzels, and more. They are as good and as scrumptious as they look. Back when my parents were still living in Tyler, my mom would send my dad on a mission to get apples before they sold out, back when the shop was only open a few days a week. I would even take some back with me to college. Now they have a large stock and even ship anywhere. Before leaving Tyler with my girlfriend, I made sure to stop at their location at the Mosaic District to grab one. She wasn't fully sold on the concept, so we just got a regular sprinkle apple. Once we made it back to Austin and cracked it open, it was fantastic like always. The sweetness balances with the obvious juiciness of the apple. Funnily enough, she was disappointed that we didn't get a more unique flavor. I tried to tell her! The concept is super unique and I wouldn't expect someone to find success in a niche dessert item, but when they are this good, it's hard for them to not be successful. RIYL: a morally acceptable sweet tooth because like it's ultimately an apple, so it has to be healthy, right?
