What a letdown. We were shown to our table, then ignored for over 15 minutes before our waiter even acknowledged us. Strike one. We finally ordered--only to receive chicken fajitas instead of beef. Sent them back, waited again. Strike two. When the corrected order arrived? The fajitas were completely bland. No seasoning. The sweetbread--crispy on the outside, yes--but equally flavorless. And then we realized they'd forgotten the beans entirely. Those charro beans? The most tasteless I've ever had in my life. Strike three. The ambiance was nice (though overpriced for a mall spot), but the food was a shadow of what I experienced here a year ago. Such a shame--Mexican cuisine should sing with spice and care. Solid Mexican food with standout appetizers and a great atmosphere! This spot inside La Plaza Mall offers decent Mexican food, but what really shines here are the appetizers. The grilled panela cheese served with fresh corn and flour tortillas was absolutely delicious--melty, flavorful, and a perfect way to start the meal. Their selection of fresh salsas and crispy chips also stood out, adding great variety and spice to the experience. Having eaten at the location in Laredo a few times, I was eager to eat at this spot during May 2024. This establishment is located inside the Las Palmas shopping mall. We sat at the bar and had some excellent service. We started with their chips, salsas, and dip. The standard setup is some smoky red salsa along with a bean dip - the beans have somewhat of a chorizo flavor to them and are absolutely delicious. I recommend asking for their avocado salsa to have, as well. That magic green sauce, though. I had my usual order of Enchiladas Callejeras, which were amazing as always. They enchiladas are stuffed well with Mexican cheese, and heavily topped with the same. It gets a little loud in here as the place fills up with mall shoppers and kids, but it still would be nice enough for a date night. It is a bit more elegant inside than most mall restaurants. Definitely it is a great place to check out when in the area. read more

Our company had a large dinner here with 15 or so employees so we reserved a private room. We probably had 6 different servers taking care of us and they were great. We ordered family style and basically had multiple large platters of tons of things to share. I'm not even sure what it was because our manager ordered in Spanish and the food and drinks started coming! We had a pile of meat that included ribs, steak, and shrimp. We had large bowls of rice, tortillas, and chips. The drinks were pretty good and large enough for the price. The mariachi band was fun to enjoy and they had multiple large TVs around the restaurant. I order the costillas and they were like beef jerky. But to be fair, I ordered them medium well. But they were more like super extra well done. Charro beans were delicious. Their food is served in ample sized servings. The ambiance is elegant, spacious and clean. The prices are somewhat steep compared to their other neighboring Palenque establishments. It's understandable however, that you're paying a steeper price to be elegantly served at a classier table setting. That said, if you're going to dinner for a celebration, this is a great place! If you simply want their typical great tasting food, stop by at one of the other ones, down the street. We tried those signature margarita drinks (see my attached picture). My parents normally drives to McAllen, TX to visit the Basilica of Our Lady Of San Juan Del Valle National Shrine. This time, we went with them. We were trying to figure out where to eat for dinner and found the Palenque Grill. This place was amazing!! Not only is the food great but the service was exceptional. The server had the same name as my Dad, Ramon and he was soo nice!! One of the managers, Gladys was sooo nice too!! They really made us feel welcome! They had Caldo de Res which is one of my favorites! We even had Mariachis serenade to us. We can't wait to go back there again, hopefully this year The 5 1/2hrs drive is worth it. read more

Food is decent. Portion was big. We started with an order of guacamole. The guacamole itself was a bit under salted. But for some reasons it came with tortillas and salsas. The corn tortillas and the salsa were good. Two of us shared a Carne Asada tacos (came with 4 tacos) and that's more than enough. My teenager liked his enchiladas. My hubby ordered a tortilla soup and salad -- way too much food for him at the end. He did say the corn tortillas were the highlight of his dinner. The service, however, is why I gave 2 stars. The restaurant didn't look too busy -- there were still empty tables not occupied. Not too long after we were seated, someone plopped down a plate of chips, salsa and mashed beans. But after that, our waiter disappeared for what must've been more than 15 minutes. Long enough that another waiter took our order and promised to figure out what happened. 10 more minutes, the original waiter came back and attempted to take our order. The waiter seemed to speak broken English, mostly Spanish. But we told him someone else did. So he disappeared. Thankfully, after that our food seemed to come reasonably fast. When we were all done eating, our waiter took our dirty plates away. He asked if everything was okay. We told him yes everything was good. In any other restaurant, a waiter would've brought us our check and said "no rush, take your time but here's your check". Not this waiter. He came by 2 more times, asking the same. The third time, we finally explicitly asked him for the check. read more

The food was good except the Fajita meat was tough and hard to cut and eat. Costa Messa has the best Fajitas. Our server, Baruch, was excellent. The hostess could have done better. At first we were offered a table by the kitchen door, it was 3 pm and the place was empty, so I pointed to another table and we sat there. Prices were about the same as other places. Located in the La Plaza Mall, it's part of the Palenque chain but with a more classy decor and traditional Mexican flare. They have a live band who plays so you can sit closer to them, or sit away from the music. We sat away so we could hear ourselves converse. The menu has a plethora of options to choose from. They also have some vegetarian dishes such as the Enchiladas Callejeras which is what I ordered. Three enchiladas with cheese and onions mixed in served with refried beans and sweet potatoes & carrots. Pretty good and filling. They also serve you complimentary chips and dips/salsas. The bean dip mixed with the spicy green sauce was money. But made sure you don't fill up on those before your apps/entrees. While I enjoyed the food, the atmosphere was very loud so it was hard to hear others. This is due to the band playing live and also we were next to a table that was celebrating an anniversary which brought out the mariachi band to do a table side serenade. It was not ideal as I'm trying to cut into my enchiladas with violins and loud signing blaring into my ears. Nonetheless, dinner was a nice experience and a solid option in the city of McAllen. read more

I'd give it 5 stars but it's a little pricey compared to other Mexican restaurants in the area. However, the food is really good. I had the Mole de Pollo and it was delicious. The guacamole and beans were awesome as well. Good michelada to wash it all down. I went there more than once while I was in the RGV, so that says something. First off I went to the Palenque grill in Edinburg and it was horrible service. This location is so much better. The waitress was so attentive and they were quick with refills. The recommendations for food were great. The temperature of our meat was cooked with perfection and the flavor was amazing. The ribs were the best on the menu and the stuffed shrimp were so great! I got a side of vegetables that were great with my steak. The chips salsa and beans on the table are a great little appetizer but you won't be eating them for long since the service is very speedy. They have both inside and outside seating that shove you great variety of ambiance. The restaurant is very clean. If you are in the area this is def one of my top recommendations. Again avoid the one in Edinburg you won't get the same quality at all! Thai place is great though! read more

When I entered this place, my initial reaction was that I was in a Mexican-American food chain where you normally get your entrees with rice and beans, the typical burritos, etc. I was delighted and surprised that all their food options were not only different, but tasty! I guess I was biased by going to so many Mexican places in my hometown in Michigan. Flavors were great, from the beans with hints of chorizo, to the soft and delicious flour tortillas. And salsas? An upscale Mexican restaurant that is huge and has a really great interior. Service and food choices were excellent. The menu is so large that it's gonna take you a while to choose what you want. Chips and Salsa while you are ordering... Large tv's to watch soccer while you eat... Tons of people stopping by the table to see how everything is going... The food... We ordered a whole fried snapper that was really good. I admit that fried fish is usually pretty tasty, but this one did not disappoint. In addition we had an order of tacos that was also good. Food portions are really big. You will not leave there hungry. Lot's of big tables with families or extended families sharing a meal. Honestly this is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the valley these days. They maintain a level of consistency when it comes to their food and service. This restaurant is loud. This location (the second one being on North McAllen on Nolana Rd) has one giant room as it's dining area. As a result, all noise blends into a loud cacophony of mixed conversations and silverware clanging. Though it sounds unpleasant, you'll find out that your ears quickly assimilate and you don't notice it soon thereafter. A fun thing to try is to take a shot (of beverage of choice) every time that a table has a birthday celebration. Every time in there, I hear a minimum of 2 birthday songs sung, because it's a popular place for birthdays. On your birthday, you get a picture taken of you and your family and a free dessert for the birthday person. The picture is printed, and brought to you before you leave, in a frame.
