I took my girlfriend here for our four year anniversary, and we had a fantastic time! We are not tea connoisseurs by any means, but we had been to the Specialteas Tea Room in Brandywine, and really enjoyed it, so we gave this place a shot too! My intent upon making our reservation was to have some tea and maybe some pastries/sandwiches/whatever tea places have to eat. They gave us menus of strictly tea, and they even had a few special teas that weren't on the menu! If you're into tea, you'd be like a kid in a candy store here, as the list is rather extensive. We had finished our first cups of tea (she had a French Vanilla type of tea, and I had a black tea with a mango/pomegranate/orange blend) when we began to wonder if we could get some food. Before we could even ask, our server (Marie, very nice lady!) brought out two identical trays heaping with various baked goods, sandwiches, and just all around tasty things. When I say heaping, I mean it - it's a lot of food, which I did not expect from a place as dainty as this! After about a half an hour of eating, finally clearing our trays, and downing some more tea, Marie came back with two identical trays of desert! Strawberry short cake, banana cake with cream cheese frosting, and a chocolate truffle piece. Despite being filled, these were all so tempting that we had no choice but to eat them! All of this came at a pretty reasonable price, especially considering it's such a tea house is a rather unique and (I'd imagine) expensive market. This is a hidden treasure in Upper Darby, aka, pizza land. We will absolutely be back with friends. The service was excellent, and they did not mind that we were ignorant of how to have a proper tea. My Mom and I travel and visit tearooms wherever we go, The Painted Teacup was delightful and ranks among the best. They have their own parking lot, and are located in a Victorian home. We were immediate greeted and brought to our table. Our server was friendly, and explained how they present tea. They offer a wide variety of tea, all of which looked appetizing. We settled of the Voodoo (a black fruit tea) and the Macadamia Coconut Chocolate, both were the best teas we have ever been served. Our tea sandwiches, scones and sweet breasts were served first and all were delicious! The flavors really popped in our mouths, especially the Brie cheese with fig and orange marmalade tart. Finally dessert is served and offers three homemade crafted goodness treats. Our service was excellent, and the owner circulates and thanks each table for coming. They offer a great variety of tea and other accessories. We were quite impressed, each tea room is a little different and I like that they keep your tea warm in the kitchen and always make sure you have a full cup. Also very nice is the selection of sweet breads, and the scones are very tasty and served with clotted cream and jam. Disappointing. I have tried to use my gift card for a year but they were not opened when I was free. I finally had a day to go with my mom and I was so excited only to be told that I needed a reservation. The website said "come join us". I saw that reservation were not required for outdoor dining but thought it meant for everything. I can deal with my Mistake. The young lady was quite nice but the woman, who I believe is the owner, was rude. She was not warm, accommodating or kind and there are only three cars in the lot. I have been on the lot for a half hour trying to find another venue and in that time, no one else entered the place. I can't imagine that they couldn't accommodate us. We were so excited that we taking pics and everything outside. Cannot believe the owner's attitude. Truly disappointing. Thankfully I found another venue that was happy to accommodate us. read more

Wow, what a pleasant surprise! Went here today with six friends. We were there for two hours, and got table service, two teas, a lunch sampler and dessert. The room was beautifully decorated for the holidays and our table was in a cozy little corner with a lace table cloth and beautiful china. First I want to state what happened is a result of my grandmother's ignorance. That said.... So my grandmom took me here for my birthday lunch since we enjoy tea houses. She made the reservations and I didn't have anything else to do but attend. I had asked before hand if we were doing afternoon tea but she made it a point to say no, we would just be ordering off the menu. We got to the tea house and its beautiful inside, perfect decor and it just feels cozy and quaint. So we were seated and were given tea menus and picked out our tea of which there was a very large selection. But no actual menu of food. So my grandmom asked the server about it and she let us know that there is only afternoon tea. So the first round comes out, and we're ok, I think it was pepper jelly on a cracker. So then as the main meal comes out, its a beautiful selection of finger sandwiches. Which is great...except I'm a pescetarian ( usually in situations like this I just say i'm a vegetarian to make things easier. ) So I said "Oh, I'm actually a vegetarian, is there anyway I can get a vegetarian friendly plate? The server just looked at me like "how dare I" and she said " You should have let us know that when you made the reservations." I just pointed to my grandmom and said how she actually made the reservations and I knew nothing about any of this. So the server turned to my grandmom and said " we specifically ask if there are any dietary restrictions we need to know about." My grandmom replied with " oh I didn't think that being vegetarian was a restriction. " So, the server just left the plate and goes, "well I can bring you a few cucumbers." Then she comes back out with a tiny plate with two cucumbers on it, and repeats about how we should have let them know ahead of time. I was feeling sorta crappy because half of my lunch I can't eat, and I was annoyed at my grandmom who immediately asked if I was going to eat my sandwiches that have the meat on them. Then the person who I would assume is the owner comes out and just checks in and explains that they ask about restrictions when making reservations because they would have made a meal just for me and that next time, just make sure I say something when calling. She had a much more pleasant tone than the server who delivered the food, who honestly made me feel bad for something that wasn't my fault, even though I know that wasn't her intention. We hosted my sister's bridal shower at the Painted Tea Cup and I couldn't be more thrilled with the experience. The newly renovated room upstairs was the perfect space and the staff was wonderful. I had read a few reviews that they didn't accommodate dietary restrictions if they were told the day of, so we made sure to call a few days in advance to notify them that we had two vegetarians and 1 raspberry allergy and they were on completely on top of it. One mother lives in Delaware and works long hours; the other lives in Colorado. Our daughter suggested a bridal tea shower and wanted to try The Painted Tea Cup. Having the wedding shower here was the best decision we made! We didn't have to do anything other than send out invitations, have some favors for the gifts, show up and then pay - no stress for a beautiful, memorable event! Mary, the owner, was so easy to work with! I called her several months ago and she patiently answered all my questions - one of which was "can we bring our own bridal shower sheet cake?" Mary said that yes, we could bring a cake, but assured me there would be plenty of food and the cake wouldn't be needed. The shower was scheduled at 3:00. The rooms were set/decorated so beautifully. The staff was very attentive/accommodating. With each course, Mary explained, in detail, what was being served. For the guests who were vegan and gluten-free, there were adjustments to their meals so they didn't feel like they were missing out on any anything. I forgot to bring a trash bag for the gift wrapping, and the server quickly brought one to me. I cannot begin to tell you all the details about the wonderful sandwiches and desserts - but I can say they were beautifully arranged on the plates and were delicious. I have only had tea in London, "Afternoon Tea" to be exact, a light meal of savories (finger sandwiches), scones (British style), and sweets. My daughter and I frequently host Afternoon Teas and will often have "Cream Tea" for just the two of us. Putting together an Afternoon Tea is quite a bit of work if you're making everything from scratch so we went out to commemorate the successful defense of my dissertation. I have been driving by The Painted Teacup for years, and when both my mom and my best friend said they wanted to try it, now seemed like as good a time as ever and I assumed it would be more intimate than a Center City hotel. They offer "High Tea," which technically is a heavier meal than Afternoon Tea; but it is clear that they are serving Afternoon Tea. The owner and the staff are quite friendly and the place is adorable. However there are some details that could be improved, I attribute these issues to the fact that we were in Upper Darby rather than Center City or London. It was truly a pity that they set the table with paper napkins and had squeeze bottles of honey rather than honey pots. This detracted a bit from the elegant place settings. The other hiccup is the lack of a printed menu. There is a lengthy spiral-bound booklet of teas to choose from but there was nothing on the table that indicated the selection of savories and sweets. Although there is a set menu that changes seasonally, this would be a nice touch and could provide guests with an idea as to what to expect. Even an verbal overview of the process would be nice. We were seated, told to order two teas, and that was it. It is a fixed price menu so everyone paid the same price, including the 5 year old. Because I am familiar with the amount of work it takes to put on a tea, I know that the price is fair but at the time of reservation it would be worthwhile to mention the child so that their meal can be adjusted. To keep the tea warm, they don't leave the pots of tea on the table, instead the servers come out occasionally to "warm your tea." The initial cup of tea was served with a warm tea wafer topped with a creamy pepper spread. Sometime later they brought out a plate filled with savories and sweets. But alas, they had to return and make new sandwiches because we needed turkey instead of ham. I was told that because it is a set menu, I have to inform them of dietary restrictions when I make the reservation. I think they should ask if there are any dietary restrictions at the time the reservation is made or when they call to confirm. If the menu had been provided, then I would have known there was an issue. Everything was tasty and attractive, each plate had the equivalent of one and a half sandwiches that were beautifully presented as five different finger sandwiches: turkey on wheat topped with apples and spinach, artichoke bruschetta, a literal cucumber and dill, something delicious on pumpernickel topped with radish, and a croissant stuffed with spinach and chicken salad. The other half of the plate were the sweets: an American style scone wedge, a delicious lemon curd cake, and a tasty banana cake with a wonderful crumb topping. There was a mini "salad" on piece of kale in the center of the plate. The unfortunate thing is that the Devonshire cream was rationed, so we had to request more and it still wasn't enough. We were surprised when they announced the dessert: a thin oatmeal wafer cookie that I enjoyed although I am not a fan of oatmeal cookies, a mini mousse, and a mini cake. We had a great time and will possibly return for another special event. Without the London comparison, this would certainly be 4-stars. read more

I had my bridal shower here today, and EVERYONE said it was the best bridal shower they had ever been to! We had byo mimosas and wine. Since our wedding theme is indian and Irish, the teas served were indian chai, Irish breakfast, and a special wedding blend with rose petals, lavender, and white tea, it was so special! The tea was delicious! We also had petite sandwiches and elegant bites of salad, and tea accompaniments through out..the food was delicious! I wanted an elegant classy shower and this was definitely the right place for it! My boyfriend's mom took me here for my birthday this year because I had never been to tea before. It was such a fun girly thing to do! The place itself is a cute Victorian filled with little trinkets for sale (maybe a little too many). They have a bunch of different rooms that you can use for private parties. I would imagine people would host bridal or baby showers here. They have a huge assortment of teas and thankfully, Betsy, our server was able to recommend some to help narrow down the decision making. I thought the food and teas were very good. They offered a few special touches on the table that I've never seen in other tea rooms. I'll leave that spoiler alone because I thought it was a nice surprise. But we were pretty offended at the way we were practically tossed out before we put our forks down. (Maybe this is the new trend in dining- I have had this issue at a few restaurants recently. I've worked in restaurants and in customer service many, many times. I consider myself to be a respectful customer and I don't think I overstay. ). I get that in a small dining room, tables need to turn but we were literally told that they needed to get ready for the next party while we were finishing our dessert and before our check was dropped. And since it is a prefix menu, it's not like we had taken a long time to order. We arrived on time and waited about 10 minutes to be seated, yet we were told that patrons are allotted an hour and a half per seating. To me that feels really ungrateful- Like, eat your food, gimme your money, and get out. I just don't care for being rushed when I'm out having a nice meal. I went here for my bridal shower with my friends from work. This place is amazing. From the moment you walk in you realize this. It is filled with little treasures to buy and adorable things for you home or table. The food was delicious with a capital "D". The serving sizes were large. The tea was fantastic. I brought my adult daughter and two friends here about a year ago. It was pouring rain outside, but inside it was warm and cheery. My friends had never experienced a tea party and were very excited to be here. I can't complain about the décor - it was fabulous - everything a tea house should have been. Unfortunately, it must have been overbooked, because the table was so closed in that we were constantly having to excuse ourselves from other diners. It wasn't much better for the server. The food was excellent -dainty and almost too pretty to eat. But when we did eat it, we were ravenous for more. They told us they had only prepared enough for each guest. Wah!!!! We had the choice of two teas, endless refills. It was delicious. The displays of crystal, teapots and other items would put you into a Victorian coma. My tablet won't "roll over" the stars; but this is, definitely, a 10 star Tea House! I traveled 1 1/2 hours to be there, and it was worth every mile. The atmosphere is awesome, peaceful and homey. Unfortunately, my experience here was not a happy one. I called to ask whether they could accommodate a friend with celiac disease - who could not tolerate gluten at all. I spoke with the owner, who prepares and serves the food. She said that would not be a problem, so I made the reservation for myself and my 2 friends. A few days before, she called to confirm and I reminded her that one of my friends can have NO gluten. When we arrived, we found the place to be charming, but we were seated at a very uncomfortable drop-leaf table, with the leafs down making it difficult to pull our chairs close to the table. (I am not overweight, but the table cut into my legs.) As we were seated, I pointed out the friend who could not eat gluten. We were given a choice of teas, but there were no other choices to be made. The owner served 3 crackers with a very tasty creamy topping, but none were gluten free, so the one friend missed out. Then the main course was brought out. My friend with celiac received a different plate than my other friend and I. The owner did explain what everything was, but it was not clear that on my celiac friend's plate were a few gluten free items, but the others did contain gluten! If my friend had realized this, she would have had to return the entire plate, because of cross contamination. My celiac friend ate some of the gluten items on the plate before we realized what had happened. There was plenty of food and it tasted fine. When we thought we were finished, dessert was also served. We were all very upset knowing that my friend was going to be sick later that day. I didn't think she should also have to pay her portion of the check. I decided to speak with the owner and went to the back to find her. I did this so that I would not embarrass anyone, including the owner, in front of other customers. I was amazed that the only thing she could say was that she had gone to so much trouble to buy special ingredients and had to stay late to prepare the special food. She was not at all concerned that one of her patrons would become sick from her food. When I asked her not to charge my friend, she told me that I was ungrateful for her hard work. I told her that I hoped she would do the right thing. (If she was going to all that trouble to prepare gluten free, why couldn't she provide ALL gluten free? After all, she was prepared to charge my friend the same $24 that she was charging my other friend and I!) When she came out with the check, she did apologize, but then went on to talk about all the trouble she had gone to. She said nothing about comping my friend until I asked her whether she was going to adjust the check. She did make the adjustment. My friend went home and got sick. Needless to say, none of us will be returning. Update: Here are my friend's comments after I showed her my review: The most annoying thing for me is that I feel she has been misleading to you and is apparently rather ill-informed about allergens. Her web site clearly states that customers should inform them of any dietary requirements prior to their visit, specifically mentioning gluten free, which is exactly what you did - twice, so then to say she'd gone to extra effort and we were being ungrateful seems like nonsense to me, either she offers gluten free or she doesn't. More worrying perhaps is that she implies she understands allergens but clearly does not, otherwise she would never have put food containing gluten on my plate. Whilst I was only sick for a few hours, I'm a tough old bird so I got over it very quickly, I wonder if someone less robust than me with celiac disease would have faired so well? read more

Attended a Birthday Tea Party for my friend. There were more than 30 ladies present. I am gluten free and this venue went out of their way to accommodate me. The host had informed them ahead of time and they served me a variety of gluten free sandwiches and desserts. I have never had so many choices in o e place. I left feeling stuffed and every morsel was absolutely delicious. Thanks to this great staff for such an enjoyable afternoon. Will definitely return. This is a very special place. It is perfectly quaint, in an old house, and just wonderful for a mother/daughter tea date. They even had gluten-conscious scones for me which was a real treat! The tea was delightful and I even bought a bag to take home!! I brought my 3yo daughter and mother, and it was such a special morning for us! The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the house, being older, was very cold when we got there in the morning. Otherwise it was wonderful - the frittata was really quite good and I couldn't be happier with the experience . Oh I should mention everything is made freshly right on the premise, the same day. I would love to give a review of this establishment but cannot because I was NOT ALLOWED to make a reservation. I wanted to treat my daughter and my 10 month old grandson to a special luncheon, but were told that the establishment was not ZONED for babies. So we were refused a reservation. I did call the township to ask about "baby zoning" but was told that there is no such restriction placed upon an eating establishment and that we had been misinformed. So all of you that have given this place a 5 star rating, please know that if you have children, you will no longer be welcomed at this place. And that this type of discrimination is NOT due to any township regulations, but rather may be only an attempt by the owner to cut her costs by not having adequate insurance or facilities to accommodate EVERYONE in an "open to the public" food provider. As to the reviews by people that said that this place brought back childhood memories, please remember that this place will NOT be creating any childhood memories for any other young people because they are not welcome here. read more

I have oodles of dietary restrictions (gluten and dairy free, among others) and the owner came through and was able to serve me food that had flavor! My only slight complaint is that I ended up having a bit less to eat than my friends with whom I came.
