My review is not going to be very useful since I ordered a kale salad, not your typical Painted Burro dish. It wasn't bad, especially considering it's kale. The guacamole and chips appetizer was good, about what you would expect. My friends ordered typical Mexican dishes and all seemed pleased. The restaurant itself is attractive, roomy and welcoming. Service was friendly and the reason I am giving this restaurant 4 stars. read more

The Painted Burro was great, I really enjoyed my meal here. I grabbed a couple of tacos, and was pleasantly surprised with the quality. The flour tortillas tasted especially fresh, and were way more substantive than what I'm used to for other soft shell tacos. Plus the ingredients in each taco were fantastic; I got the pork carnitas and the chicken, and definitely recommend each (the pork in particular was amazing). The space itself was also nice, it felt modern and inviting. The bartenders were all fantastic, very friendly and constantly on the move while covering the impressively long bar. Everyone seems to recommend this place if you're staying in the area, and it's clear why. You'll find good food and drinks here. read more

Do not pass up this amazing deal!!! You have to go here for brunch!!!!! For just $18 dollars you get to have bottomless brunch (does not include sides, drinks, or dessert) off of their food menu!!! My friend and I ordered a lot and it was still plenty of items we did not have. ALL the food items were delicious. Food came out hot, appealing, and tasty. I was shocked that this restaurant offered this brunch special. Inside of the restaurant is gorgeous, beautifully decorated, modern, clean, it's super inviting! Even the restrooms were dazzling. Service was attentive and helpful with recommendations. We arrived right when they opened and service was very quick but as the restaurant became more busy service slowed down, but that's expected. I can't recommend this place enough! I love every bit of my dining experience! read more

I've been to the Painted Burro locations in Brookline & Harvard Square, so I decided to try out the Waltham location when I was in the area. My roommate and I came here for lunch on a weekday and had a great time. The service was great, waitstaff is all very nice. We had drinks and started off with some chips and salsa that were great. We ordered their chorizo queso which was unique and very tasty- the chorizo was cooked perfectly, and the veggie toppings added great flavor. For my main course I ordered my usual from Burro, the chimichanga (very good every time!). The only thing that I would change is that the red sauce is a better overpowering. My roommate ordered fish tacos and enjoyed her dish. We sat here for about an hour and half just enjoying ourselves so I would say it was a pretty successful experience. read more

Decent Mexican, service is hit or miss. Drinks are usually on point. A bit on the expensive side for Mexican. Good location and ambiance.

Service was good, fast, and not overly intrusive; ambiance was what you would expect (dim, medium excitement, not overly loud); food was only good, not great. No complaints about it, but nothing really wowed me. It was very tame safe food that would be a general crowd pleaser. The reason that's a little disappointed (for me personally - not necessarily for the masses) is because I intentionally ordered was looked like the "spicy" items from the menu and they were all pretty mild. Overall, really good place and good experience. read more

Ahora the sixth stop on my "Eat the Distance!" tour! Wasn't decisively "in the mood" for "Mexican" on this particular occasion so my expectations waltzing in were correlated and, at the end of it as it turned out, vastly outdone. Excellent 'happy hour' half priced appetizers and tacos. The guac was superbly masticated with the pork belly and roasted tomatoes, additionally every one of the 7 tacos ordered were really very superb. Highly recommend the pork carnitas, very much enjoyed the multilayered tortilla experience. Fun to see a reasonable mezcal list including one of my personal favourites, the anejo ilegal. Service was excellent, friendly and timely, with an ambience forward with tasteful ethnic notes. Would return for tacos! read more

We had a great dinner here tonight. Service wasn't fast but it was good, and we were fine with it since we wanted to catch up! They have a great list of zero proof cocktails in addition to their extensive bar menu. I had a raspberry no-jito and it was very tasty. The chips and salsa were good and we had a special pulled chicken appetizer to start. For dinner, I got the shrimp fajitas, and they were great. This Texas girl was impressed with the Mexican food outside of Boston. Cute and fun atmosphere, good food, and enjoyed it all! read more

This place was described to me as a 'fancy Mexican restaurant and I was immediately in because who doesn't want to dress up for their margaritas and guac ? As a repeat visitor, I've enjoyed learning about tequila as I drink it, having excellent sizzling presentation and the same friendly faces trip after trip. Parking can be a bit tricky depending on day of the week, but there is a parking garage which can have some spots available. Desserts don't let you down and there's good decor with a neon sign for your photo ops. read more

Found this gem on TikTok, saw they had a bottomless brunch $29 a person. To my surprise, the place wasn't busy at all for a Saturday morning. We were sat in the bar area and were served promptly by the bartender who was very personable. Drinks came out first which were delicious and then we picked a bunch of items to try. Each one was fresh and delicious as well as flavorful. They were playing reggae music, which set the tone beautifully for the morning. Some highlights were the short rib taco, French toast, and the papas. The special pancake of the day was dragon fruit, which tasted like a delicious marshmallow. For $29 as much as you can eat in an hour and a half of top rate Mexican dishes that reminded me of Southern California you can't go wrong. read more

Been to the Somerville location for brunch and it was 10/10. Came to dinner on a Sunday with my family and we ordered papas bravas, nachos, and tuna ceviche as starters. All amazing options except I questioned the carrots in the nachos?? As a vegetarian, I enjoyed the substitution for vegetarian refried bean as my family couldn't eat pork either. Everyone enjoyed their entrees, but I especially loved the grilled salmon. I substituted the potatoes for mango salad and they gave me like 3 pieces of the salad :( 4 stars because I wish they gave me more of it as a substitution. Ended with chocolate cake and churros. Would recommend this cute and cozy spot!! read more

I enjoyed it very much but my husband has a few reservations about returning. Overall the food is excellent. I had a fish taco (amazing) and veggie fajitas. He had a steak taco and steak fajitas. All great except the rice was a bit undercooked. I thought it was good. His major reservation was that the food did not come out hot. I'm hoping the management sees this and can correct it for future patrons. My margaritas were awesome. I had two which is unusual for me. But hubby likes a frozen strawberry margarita and they don't do frozen, or strawberry margaritas. Also the price was higher than we are used to paying for for Mexican food. Service was also phenomenal. read more

I had delivery from this restaurant. It arrived one hr later than promised. The weather wasn't a factor. Not only was the food cold, it wasn't the correct order that I paid for. I understand errors, however it was what followed that was unacceptable. I contacted the restaurant and was told to call back the next day. Not only did I call the next day, I brought the uneaten food with me to the restaurant. The manager was not at the restaurant when I arrived, as I was told would be. After waiting an unreasonable amount of time I had to leave. I left the food on the counter and I politely said "have a good day ". I will never return here again or recommend this restaurant to anyone knowing that, in the end, everyone gets what they deserve. read more

This is a beautiful restaurant, with a great ambiance and decor. With over a hundred types of tequilas, I definitely got a wide variety of drinks to try from. We had brunch today as we wanted to try the bottomless brunch. It included all menu items except sides, beverages and dessert for $25 pp- for 90 mins of dining. Pretty restaurant. Comfy booths. Wait staff and food runners were attentive and friendly. All the servings were smaller portions of the regular items so we trued many items. We wanted to like the Brussels sprouts and cauliflower apps but they were mediocre. The chicken and waffles and eggs Benedict (on top of refried beans) were out favorites. We also enjoyed the short rib taco, omelette and fish taco. We paid extra for the guacamole with mango- it was very good. A few items were prepared with cilantro (which neither of us likes) and it couldn't be made without. We enjoyed the opportunity to try so many dishes workout eating food. Great service in a chill and pretty space! Three of us went for brunch at 11am on a Saturday and it was surprisingly so empty! It started getting busier around noon though. We got the $25 bottomless brunch which I felt was a pretty good deal! We got a variety of tapas (corn, brussel sprouts, potatoes), two entrees, a few tacos, and French toast for dessert. Everything was pretty tasty and came in smaller portions so that we could try more things. My favorites were the corn and brussel sprouts, as well as the French toast. I would definitely come again! read more

$25 for Bottomless Brunch. A la carte does NOT seem worth it - the menu prices are sky high. Also, definitely not authentic Mexican food (and that's okay, but just a heads up). Street Corn (2/5): Average. Nothing special, but not objectively bad. You can't really go wrong with corn, but it's also not up to par with other Mexican street corns. Brussels Sprouts (4/5): These were one of my favorites. The Brussels sprouts have a very nice char and are nicely seasoned. Carnitas Tacos (2/5): Too dry. Still decent, though. Short Rib Tacos (2.5/5): Also too dry. Flavor was decent. Slightly better than the carnitas. Fish Tacos (1/5): Fish was bland. Also soggy. Wouldn't recommend. Wings (4/5): These were my other favorites. Really well marinated and crispy. Superbeasto (2/5): This is a trap. Do not order. It's just a bunch of filling food items plopped on a plate. There's BARELY any chorizo. The chicharrones are pretty good. You have to be selective with what you eat in AYCE lest you get full too quickly. Chilaquiles (1/5): Had BARELY any meat in it. Chicken & Waffle (2/5): Waffle was soggy. Chicken wasn't that crispy. Gravy was all right. Burro Benedict (1/5): Why was it necessary to place this on a bed of refried beans? Everything here is designed to fill you up. I think it's the smartest just to get appetizers and tacos. $25 is an okay price for AYCE, but the food was just average. You can get sub-$22 ayce Indian food and $25 ayce sushi, and both of those options are better than this. Service is also a bit slow, so you can expect to do 2-3 rounds of orders before the 90 minute time limit is up. Try to place most of your orders at once. The servers were friendly, though. The restaurant itself seems pretty upscale. It's very clean and spacious, with high ceilings and fancy decorations. read more

Food tasted good. Very over priced. Server never came around again once he got out orders in besides to give us our bill. They will offer chips and guacamole and not mention its $13. Obviously we know nothing is free but atleast let your customers know it's an extra charge. Everything was very small portioned for a high price. One birria taco is $8.50. I was thinking maybe they put a good amount of protein.... nope. Soggy tortilla with a skimpy amount of protein. We will not be returning here. read more

What a delicious meal!!! Attentive and friendly service, mouth-watering food, decent beer selection. My family, extended family and I enjoyed the brunch on Sunday. Went on Sunday. You have no choice but to order the bottomless brunch for $29.99. Food was unlimited tapas(small plates). This seemed fun and the food was good, however, if they're going to require you to have a certain service then they should prepare for it. The wait time for the food was way too long and the portions very small so you are going to order more which takes another long wait time. Items came out randomly so some people were eating and some were just watching and waiting. As stated, the food was good but not very hot and the wait time really took away from the experience. If you're hungry you might want to go on a different day. read more

Went here with friends who were visiting out of town, food was pretty okay but the environment was a bit hectic. We were a party of 4 placed in the middle of two larger parties (probably 10+) so it was a little challenging to navigate around our table. The decor is beautiful and the place itself is nice. They were really busy for a Friday night but our waitress was amazing. She was as attentive as possible but it did take us a while to get our bill, presumably because she was also serving the two larger parties. The food itself was decent; I got the papas bravas and beef empanadas. It was interesting that the beef empanadas were not closed but slightly opened around the sides. Usually, empanadas are crimped closed around the edges, but this wasn't the case. I would say it more closely resembled a torta. The taste was fine, the beef was on the drier end, but was acceptable since the chipotle mayo was tasty, I just wish there was a bit more of it! For the papas bravas, the potatoes were not as crispy as I would have liked and was a bit on the cold end. Similarly, I wish there was more sauce or even salsa to have gone with this. It was a good price for the large portion I had. I liked how the first round of salsa and chips were free, as at some places it isn't! I also got a margarita with salt on the rim... but all of the salt was slipping off the glass, so it made it difficult to hold and drink. Overall, I thought the food here was okay, but the service and decor are what give this place three stars. read more

I'm giving two stars because we had a large reservation of 14 (12 adults and two kids) for a celebration dinner and the waiter was very polite. I really had high hopes for this place after driving by it on the highway so frequently. We ordered drinks and two orders of the queso to start. All drinks were served right away but the queso never came. After waiting almost an hour for food we notified the staff that we were also still waiting for the queso. We had gone through three rounds of chips and salsa by now. Turns out there was no order out in for queso so they comped us for it and put it in right away and apologized very genuinely. Unfortunately the queso was luke warm and not appetizing at that point. We finally received our dinner. I ordered two tacos, the short stack and the birria as a meal with rice and beans. I asked for no cilantro, believing the birria taco itself was made to order. The waiter noted my restriction with assurance. Unfortunately for me, the birria was l o a d e d with cilantro. Normally I pick it out and eat it anyways but this would have taken the entire meal to try and get through. My father in law insisted we let the waiter know, so he flagged him down. The waiter looked disappointed and said I could not order that one without because they are pre-made like that. I understand this cuts down on time but it cuts back on quality and versatility. I ordered a second short stack instead accepting my fate and it came out on a second small plate. By then I had already contested the first one and the waiter took my plate with my lime and sauces on it but I was about to snag the hot sauce as he lifted it away with the birria taco. I feel like they should have at least offered it to the rest of our party to not waste it but I guess not. The rice was definitely reheated and dry and the beans just had a weird watery spice flavoring to them. Like I said I had higher hopes but I'm overall not wow'd by anything here. It's also a very open and very loud/echoey room. read more

Pros: The atmosphere is nice The food is actually pretty good. The salsa is so good, the best I've had in a while. The chips are good too, just alone. I had the Malbec, omg that wine is so good. I was not expecting it to be that good. They have a tequila menu on the table with a wide variety of tequila. Cons: To me this seemed like a new age - hipster - gentrifed Mexican restaurant. There is no rice or beans on the menu, no carne asada, no pork verde, or any of the other traditional mexican dishes I love. The food is good but there are so many taco spots across the city that have better tacos for half the price. Its one thing when you get what youre paying for but they arent worth 9$ for one. Our server must have been overwhelmed, I asked for rice and beans she said they had them even tho they werent on the menu. She never brought them out and only now that im writing this review did I think about it. I didnt check the bill before leaving. I hope I wasnt charged for something I didnt get. But anyway. She took our order and 5 mins later came by to ask us if we were ready to order. That was a little concerning. The corn is good but too much mayo. They could lighten that up a bit. Parking is difficult, even with the additional parking in the back. All in all it was an ok experience, the food is good but not worth the cost. read more

Not a fan. The husband and I were able to slip away for an hour or so on a Tuesday night. We therefore hit up Painted Burro due to its' convenient location near our hotel. Upon entering, it took a bit for staff to acknowledge us. Once acknowledged, the hostess acted like she was doing us a favor by seating us. She attempted to seat us in the bar, which I requested not to be seated there. She obliged and sat us in the main dining area. I went with their $13(whattttt????) House Margarita whereas the husband had a specialty beer. I was not asked if it were to be on the rocks or frozen, salt or no salt. Is it so bad to want a rim job?!?! I had thought this was a Mexican restaurant? The drink itself was saturated with sweet and sour along with an approximate one shot of tequila. Did I mention this establishment charges $13 for this beverage? I had to ask for chips and salsa, which I thought was customary at Mexican restaurants? Nothing to write home about once received, very bland on both notes. We decided not to spend much as the establishment already irked us. Therefore, we went with the veggie fajitas. Once delivered, I appreciated the variety of vegetables. It contained brussel sprouts, cauliflower, onions, peppers, and a slaw mixture. Definitely unique. However, it was accompanied by a total of 3 flour tortillas cheese, lettuce, sour cream, and pico de gallo. No beans or rice to be found. Seriously? You charge $28 for this dish and cannot even supply accompaniments? Wow. The best part was when I asked for more tortillas. No one asked if I wanted flour or corn, yet I received 3 corn ones. At the lovely price of $3 additional. What?!?! I can get a package of 10 El Milagre corn tortillas in Chicago for 40 cents. Wtf. In summary, do not go there. It is for office park employees or individuals staying at the nearby hotels. Allow them to charge it to their companies. Do not spend your hard earned money there read more

Beautiful space, easy to get to, friendly staff, and overpriced, incredibly mediocre food with meager portions. Back in the day we went to their Davis Square location and it was delicious, but it began to go downhill a few years ago so we stopped going. This place seems to be exactly the same. I got the fajitas and it was a mushy glop of vegetables with a handful of chicken, a puddle of lime juice at the bottom of the bowl, and stingy portions of avocado and trimmings. All I could taste was lime juice and there were no spices, nuance or textures. It didn't even come with rice or beans. Good thing I was at a business outing and didn't have to pay $32 for that mess. The only redeeming part of the meal was the strawberry lime spritz, which was delicious (and also about the size of a glorified test tube). I'd avoid this place, there are way better options around. read more

Service was miserable. After we got our water, waited 20 minutes for our waiter, 10 more minutes for chips and salsa, 45 minutes for food. This place... could be better. Came with a bunch of friends for the all you can eat brunch option. My favorite was the burro wings with chile agave glaze. They were really well seasoned and the skin was flavorful and crispy. I ate a lot of them and they were the highlight of this meal. I also really liked the brussel sprouts. They had a nice char to them and the sauce paired nicely with the sprouts. The tacos were decent. I had the pork carnita tacos, and the flavor was pretty good. The meat was a little on the drier side but I liked it enough to have 2. My friends liked the short rib and shrimp tacos. The street corn was okay. It tasted like someone took canned corn and dumped some cheese and paprika on them, but it wasn't bad. The chicken and waffles were bad. The chicken AND the waffles were both super soggy. It came drenched in this orange-yellow sauce-gravy thing that overpowered the chicken and the waffles. It was the biggest wtf moment of the entire meal and I didn't even want to finish this. I would not recommend this place- it's just not worth the $25. There are lots of better options where you can have better Mexican food for better value, and where you can have better AYCE (sushi, hotpot, Indian buffet, etc) for better value. The quality of the food is just not good enough to justify the price you pay. read more
