ya know, it really irks me when i try a spot that has a perfect five star rating on yelp, and come away thinking "meh." i'd had this place in my bookmarks for months, and was excited to finally finish work just in time to be able to grab some lunch from here. i called in an order for a half & half, with the meatloaf sandwich (no bacon), and the pb300 salad. my sandwich, unsurprisingly, was served with bacon. i don't eat pork, and felt awful about it since i'd picked up so close to when they were closing. i let the woman know that i'd asked for it without, and her *immediate* response was to go on the defense with "you NEVER said no bacon." i was positive that i did, but also understood, and said it would be fine if they wanted to throw together anything easier since i understood they were closed (i offered to take a chicken salad sammy instead since i figured it'd just be pre-made mix slapped onto bread). she was rather rude, but did end up shouting to the man in the back to remake the meatloaf sandwich, and then she immediately walked out of the door. so...service was lacking, but i was still really looking forward to the food. i lit into the meatloaf sandwich and...it sucked. the meatloaf had no texture, and no flavor. it had the consistency of overworked hot dog meat, and was completely bland. the colby jack was equally tasteless, and did nothing to complement the lack of flavor of the meat, or the sogginess of the bread (in spite of this being a fresh made sandwich!). onto the salad! i enjoy salads, so was still looking forward to this (rather than feeling compulsed to eat it to compensate for the lackluster meatloaf). this was...just okay. the salad was meant to have chicken, roasted veggies, onion, and parmesan. there were about six *teensy* (like, smaller than a dime?) pieces of grilled vegetables strewn throughout the salad. the parmesan was exceptionally low quality, and felt a bit like eating pieces of flavorless plastic mixed into an otherwise decent salad. alack, alas, after the disappointing service and disappointing meal, i don't think i'll give this place another shot. the cookie was good though. *shrug* read more

Looked first for outdoor seating (because we had our dog with us), then at reviews. How can you pass up lunch at a place with 38 5-star reviews?!! The one table outside had comfy, cushioned chairs. This place was great. We are from out of state and found this place. Super cute decor on the inside and very pleasant employees! I believe it is family run, so the cooks also bus tables, and there's just a very nice family atmosphere. The ham and cheddar rolls are soooo good. I also got the Jordan sandwich which was great, and the accompanying sauce was so yummy. If you're local, you definitely need to check this place out! read more

Charm, attention to each customer and pretty much the best carrot cake EVER! My wife and I enjoyed our sandwiches so, SO much! The fresh baked breads and the handmade condiments were very, very good. When we walked in, there were over a dozen people seated but no one had food yet; turns out a big catering order had been placed and it stalled things. But one look at the pleasant smiles and the happy murmuring of satisfied RETURNING customers let us know we were in the right place. I was really disappointed in this restaurant. With all five star reviews I was expecting out of this world food. Don't get me wrong, it was good. However, I felt it was a little overpriced for what it was. We both got half and half with a cup of soup and half a sandwich. We also split a piece of the carrot cake. First the soup. It was really good. The sandwich was just okay. You had to get up and get your own water or whatever you are drinking. And they don't have many choices. Water, raspberry tea, and citrus water. It felt like a place for senior ladies who lunch. And it cost $30 with the cake. And that was far from the best carrot cake ever. Very moist but only single layer. In a nutshell, it was good food but I won't go back. read more

The owner took our order, served us, visited with us and made sure every customer's needs were met in a very friendly and caring way. The house salad and southwest salad were great. My wife considers herself a connoisseur of carrot cake and she pronounced theirs "the best ever." Finding the Paint Box Cafe is challenging since its on the back side of a square strip mall, but it's well worth looking for. read more

Awesome little cafe. I had turkey panini and potato soup. My daughter had potato soup with salad. Both of us loved it. My grandaughter 5yo had a PBJ with fruit and cheezits served in a muffin tin. Best bistro/bakery at the Lake. Hands down. Opened August 2011. Roxie Kelley, local best-selling cookbook author and original creator of another very popular Lake Area bistro/bakery and her 2 grown-up kids (Brooke and Blake) have opened a cute little spot with some really amazing food. Brooke's artwork is also on display. The decor is whimsical and fun, and there are a variety of seating options. The service is great. The place is very clean, and you can count on attention to detail. You can get really good vegan and vegetarian food here, and those ham and cheese rolls that the Lake loves so much? Well, I have to say, Roxie - who first brought them to us - is turning out higher quality than her competitor. in addition to having a great lunch there over the holidays, we ordered 2 dozen snickerdoodles and 1 batch of cream cheese brownies (which turns out to be 16 generously sized brownies) to give to several members of my husband's family. Grandma Frances (who has been making snickerdoodles for about 85 years) said they were the best she ever tasted. Grandma Peggy (who I had overheard wishing for cream cheese brownies) was delighted and insisted on freezing 3 of the 4 we brought her so she could enjoy them over a few weeks. The nephews and others in Jake's family couldn't believe how good those brownies were. Roxie gave us a 20% discount for ordering in quantity (still not cheap, but I'm sure no more than the competitors and much higher quality), and she gave us the lovingly boxed baked goods in a very nice reusable tote bag. The website (built on a blogspot platform) doesn't have a lot of information (no online menu, for example), but I assume such details will come as they continue to build the business. I agree with the description they give of the Paint Box Cafe on their blog: "Seriously good food in a not-so-serious setting. Feed your inner artist - build your own meal! Food for Saints AND Sinners. Sandwiches, soups, salads, and endless desserts! Fun artistic atmosphere great for friends and families. Affordable pricing. You'll want to come back again and again, this is food you won't find anywhere else!" If you're confused about where it is located, the door of Paint Box Cafe looks out at the side of the KK McDonald's (it's on what I would call the "back side" of the Palisades Shopping Center).
