Pat Cohans is famous for the fight scene in the Oscar wining movie (1951) The Quite Man, staring John Wayne and Maureen O'hara. My wife who did all of the travel bookings is an old movie buff and put Cong on our travel itinerary. It was about 3:30 p.m. when we arrived in Cong after our morning visit to the Cliffs Of Moher. We had not eaten since breakfast and quickly made the short two block walk to Pat Cohans. We ordered the double burger with fries and a side order of onion rings. It was all good. Best onion rings I've had in a long, long time. The burgers were excellent. A few of you will pick up on this this statement, "where's the beef", well it was on our burgers. The beef patties were nice and thick. Great burgers! We had a nice late lunch, early dinner.

A drive through the tiny, quaint main street of Oughterard told us we were in the right spot. We found street parking and after perusing the prices of a few places, decided the the restaurant of Boat Inn was affordable and welcoming. The dining room was mostly locals (a good sign) and we ordered the fish and chips plate. It had a great presentation and came with delicious, not overly oily fish, chips, mushy peas (well seasoned) and two types of salad-a crunchy, creamy Cole slaw, and a spinach salad. Very filling, and probably the best fish and chips we tried on our 2 week tour of Ireland and Scotland. The severs were also very friendly and on the attentive side, and even helped us out with the tricky pronunciation of the small town. We went on our way, bellies full and countenance brightened, ready for the rest of the drive. If I'm through that area again, I won't hesitate to stop for another meal or perhaps even stay at the Inn.

I loved the contrast of the ancient countryside during the day with this modern Irish restaurant at night. We didn't make reservations (highly recommended!), so had to wait about 45 minutes at the bar. No bother, it was fun chatting and drinking some lovely wine for a change -- the Guy's Chardonnay was actually really good! The patrons were loud and happy and I enjoyed that. We got a great table at the back of the place with a grand view of the dining room and the coziness of a candlelit meal. The music was in the adjacent room so we could hear it filtering in without it obstructing our conversation. We started with crab & potato cakes which were tasty, although definitely more potato than crab...but I didn't mind too much. For my main, I had the fish & chips and it was the BEST fried cod & chips I've had in Ireland. Kudos to whomever cooked this -- crunchy, salty, tender, milky, flaky -- everything you want in an expertly fried cod. The chips were excellent as well. My husband had the lamb stew and it was a loving concoction of simmered potatoes, tender lamb, carrots and brown bread. Certainly better than simple pub food. After this delicious meal, my bed was the only place I really had the energy to go to. Next time I'm back in Clifden, I'll probably head for Guy's and stay a bit longer to investigate the craic. Larger groups might struggle to squeeze in as it's pretty busy. As we were seated near the kitchen, we saw lots of delicious looking items coming out after we ordered a burger (huge) and the tempora battered prawns.
