Texas and Idaho flags at Griffin's Bar welcoming our group!

I want to write the review due to the great time we had at Griffin's in Galway Ir. this past week. My wife and I were with a very diverse group from Texas, Idaho and other states all traveling with a great group of musicians. Dave Griffin was the greatest host one could ask for, he welcomed this group of music loving people with open arms. The bands played two night and packed the house with many Galway locals showing their love for all types of music. Food and drink was the greatest and the Guinness was cold and drawn perfectly (also noted in another review). With Dave Griffin knowing that we would be there he displayed the Texas and Idaho flags on the front of his establishment!! We all visited with the local patrons exchanging stories and opinions with each. Griffin's showed all the warmth and welcome that Ireland is known for. We cannot wait for the opportunity to return to Griffin's. I cannot close without also mentioning Lisa and John (bartenders) that took such great care of everyone there. Thanks for such a great time

The best Guinness in Clifden. It was advertised in a local brochure as such, so of course I scoffed at the advert and proclaimed we'd have to give it a go. I'm so glad we did. The old men at the bar, lined up with their change for their Guinnesses stole my heart. The horse races on the television, the cheeky remarks between the old men -- this place is where you should go if you want a taste of Clifden. Talented musicians play trad music in the front room and the staff are extra friendly. The Guinness? One of those perfect pours. Creamy head with the "pride of the rim" hugging the glass edge perfect. No bitter aftertaste; just cold carbonated rich malted beatifulness. A good Guinness cures all ales. Look around here and you'll understand. Head here for the real stuff.

We decided to visit Griffin's Bar because one of our grandsons is named Griffin, so how could we not? Now I can't comment on the food, as both my wife and I had dinner prior to arriving, but I can comment on the atmosphere, which is quintessential Irish. Once there we pulled up a pair of stools, ordered up a couple of pints and began listing to the music. The group consisted of three teenaged boys and a woman, we assumed to be the mother of one of the others in the group. The music was traditional Irish music, but what really pleasantly surprised us was how between song people sitting around the bar would start singing and the band would jump in to accompany the song. It was great to see people truly comfortable and relaxed enough to sing the song that can to their mind for nothing else but enjoyment. It was a first for both of us and made for a very memorable evening. We have great memories of our visit to Clifton and that night at the Griffin is at the top of the list.

Top notch- friendly regulars, a fine pint and great craic. I wish we had the same at home.

Griffin's is a traditional old man pub. If that's what you want, then you'll find it here in spades. It's fine for a pint.

Walking in during a during a driving rain storm (Storm Bram) it's cozy with a beautiful large bar flanked by tables and a charcoal burning fireplace. Wasn't busy so I got a spot right by the fireplace. Service was great, the bartender waited on me and was very professional, they said. Now this joint has been around for a long time and on many "best" lists, etc.... they are known for their local seafood dishes. Large menu consisting of soups, sandwiches, mains such as fish & chips/ chicken curry and also artisan pizza! They also have Daily Seafood Specials that change daily. Asked for some recos and he said you have to try the mussels. Kicked it off with a Guinness and Coonemara seafood chowder with local fresh & smoked seafood... was outstanding. Next, steamed Killary mussels in a coconut milk/ chili sauce served with garlic bread. This may have been the best dish I had on a 14 day trip & I went everywhere! Must order. For the main I ordered their burger with aged cheddar MR, was good with great fries. Again, service was impeccable and prices very average make it a must stop in Clifden! Talk later

It was quite busy at 1 pm on a Sunday in early June but we still got a table for two at the back bar area without delay. The space was filled with lots of cozy seating nooks for 2-4 people. Larger groups might struggle to squeeze in as it's pretty busy. As we were seated near the kitchen, we saw lots of delicious looking items coming out after we ordered a burger (huge) and the tempora battered prawns. The burger was a bit disappointing with a very firm dense texture. The chips (fries) were good along with the battered shrimp. Next time I might try a pizza or croque Monseur instead-they looked great

It was almost 4:00 pm and some restaurants were ready to serve dinner. I saw Mitchell's was to serve lunch until 4:30 pm. So we went. The servers and the manager (could be the owner) were very friendly and quick. Both my friend and I ordered the Hereford beef burger. I ordered a seafood chowder and pistachio cake for dessert. The chowder truly hit the spot. It wasn't thick and full of seafood. The burger was good, but I think the fries cut was too thick. It was nice the burger came with a small salad, which we didn't know and my friend ordered a small side salad. So we ended up with lots of salad. The fresh cream on the dessert plate was delicious. It went well with the pistachio cake. However, it was a bit hard to taste the pistachio. We chatted up with a couple who bike to Clifden once a year and they always come to Mitchell's for lunch, especially for the seafood chowder and crème brûler. High praise indeed. Highly recommend this place. I picked the right place.
