Staying near Tully Cross/ Letterfrack during Christmas and not a lot of food options so this was nice suprise! Walking in during a during a driving rain storm (Storm Bram) it's cozy with a beautiful large bar flanked by tables and a charcoal burning fireplace. Wasn't busy so I got a spot right by the fireplace. Service was great, the bartender waited on me and was very professional, they said. Now this joint has been around for a long time and on many "best" lists, etc.... they are known for their local seafood dishes. Large menu consisting of soups, sandwiches, mains such as fish & chips/ chicken curry and also artisan pizza! They also have Daily Seafood Specials that change daily. Asked for some recos and he said you have to try the mussels. Kicked it off with a Guinness and Coonemara seafood chowder with local fresh & smoked seafood... was outstanding. Next, steamed Killary mussels in a coconut milk/ chili sauce served with garlic bread. This may have been the best dish I had on a 14 day trip & I went everywhere! Must order. A nice bar/pub serving the typical pub food (burgers, fish and chips, sandwiches) plus some fresh seafood (mussels, chowder) and pizzas. It was quite busy at 1 pm on a Sunday in early June but we still got a table for two at the back bar area without delay. The space was filled with lots of cozy seating nooks for 2-4 people. Larger groups might struggle to squeeze in as it's pretty busy. As we were seated near the kitchen, we saw lots of delicious looking items coming out after we ordered a burger (huge) and the tempora battered prawns. The burger was a bit disappointing with a very firm dense texture. The chips (fries) were good along with the battered shrimp. Just ok, I have definitely experienced better. On the face of it, the place looked promising. Cool, modern and stylish from the outside. And nicely decorated inside. I ordered the Thai Red Chicken curry. My partner a pizza. Needed to have my meal reheated as the curry itself came to the table barely warm in the middle of the bowl. They obliged and it came back hotter. It tasted very nice too. My partners pizza was overloaded with cheese. Way way too much cheese. The base was nothing to write home about. I could be wrong, but I doubt the make the pizzas in house. The most they'd do is add the toppings. This was the second average dining experience in the Clifden area. I really hope this was a one off and that the many many visitors to the Clifden area get a better standard of dining than ours was. read more

We've been in Ireland for 4-days and this is by far the best meal we've had!!!! And the best beer! I ordered the Franciscan Rebel Red ale and it's the most flavorful beer I've had in Ireland. My hubs ordered the Bridewell Blonde brewed here in Clifden and it's delicious, smooth, flavorful and easy drinking. For dinner I had the house pasta - pappardelle with roasted veggies and a nutmeg, white wine cream sauce and it's brilliant. The pasta tastes like it was made this morning and the veggies are a nice change from Irish fare veggies (i.e. Potatoes and carrots). My hubs had a roasted goat cheese and red onion wood fired pizza that was to die for! If you're in Clifden stop in here you won't be disappointed!!!! read more

Our night at Guy's was one of the best dates I've even had in Ireland -- and unexpectedly too. I love pubs, but this place was modern and stylish, and much appreciated in a rural town like Clifden. I loved the contrast of the ancient countryside during the day with this modern Irish restaurant at night. We didn't make reservations (highly recommended!), so had to wait about 45 minutes at the bar. No bother, it was fun chatting and drinking some lovely wine for a change -- the Guy's Chardonnay was actually really good! The patrons were loud and happy and I enjoyed that. We got a great table at the back of the place with a grand view of the dining room and the coziness of a candlelit meal. The music was in the adjacent room so we could hear it filtering in without it obstructing our conversation. We started with crab & potato cakes which were tasty, although definitely more potato than crab...but I didn't mind too much. For my main, I had the fish & chips and it was the BEST fried cod & chips I've had in Ireland. Kudos to whomever cooked this -- crunchy, salty, tender, milky, flaky -- everything you want in an expertly fried cod. The chips were excellent as well. My husband had the lamb stew and it was a loving concoction of simmered potatoes, tender lamb, carrots and brown bread. Certainly better than simple pub food. After this delicious meal, my bed was the only place I really had the energy to go to. Next time I'm back in Clifden, I'll probably head for Guy's and stay a bit longer to investigate the craic. The food here was quite good. I had a duck sausage dish with caramelized onions and my wife had the tempura prawns. The prawns were cooked perfectly according to my wife. She loves shrimp and to say they were perfect from her is a real compliment. My dish was excellent as well. They gave me a mountain of mashed potatoes and I could not begin to eat it all. I washed down the dinner with a Galway Hooker beer that was excellent. This was a good meal. read more

I really like this place because it is one of the few places in town that has free WiFi and cute bartenders. Service was excellent the first few times I went, but lately I sort of feel like I am in the way. It's like being a regular but without any of the perks. This place is a hidden gem! Myself and my partner went here for some food and a couple of pints during this week. Nice candle lit table, jug of "clear" water put on table when seated. The food is fantastic! Great spicy chicken wings for starter, warm lemon and water bowl for finger cleaning aswell..... love it! Homemade beef burger was so nice, so filling and the mince was proper quality. If only I had of left enough room to finish the most fantastic desert I have tasted in some time. A great edition to this place for me has to be the Chocolate, Almond & Orange Pudding......WOW! Think terry's chocolate orange for a cake haha..... My partner had soup, fish and chips, and sticky toffee pudding for desert and ate the lot. Not one complaint. I'd eat here again in a heart beat. Best Irish beef stew my sister and I have EVER tasted! We picked this restaurant because it was the most reasonably priced out of the ones we saw on the street, and we had a good gut feeling about it...good thing we followed our gut, because everything was delicious! The beef stew definitely stood out as our top choice (the meat was tender and falling apart, the stew had good flavor, the mashed potatoes were so creamy) but everything else we tried was really tasty as well. (Potato and crab cake, which came on a bed of delicious salad, the brown bread which was thick and hearty, and the munchies platter that had the chicken, shrimp, and potato wedges.) The service was very prompt and quick, which we appreciated, and the bathrooms were so cute and very clean! Highly recommend. read more

My husband had dinner here and ended up returning for lunch the next day because Guy's is the only place in all of Clifden that has a vegetarian soup. Service was not that great at dinner (the place was packed) but better at lunch when there were only a few other people there. We had: - Cheese Board: Well, we really only liked one of the three cheeses (the goat cheese) and I was sort of unimpressed with the cheese board in general because our server didn't explain what anything was nor suggest pairings. The other two cheeses, something like a flavorless brie and a very sharp blue cheese, didn't get finished. Only came with 4 crackers, definitely could have used more. Unfortunately it took another 30 minutes for our main courses to come out after the cheese board. - Warm Goats Cheese & Roasted Vegetables: This was very good, and came with an entire wheel of the goats cheese we liked so much from the cheese board. The only reason I even know the cheese board came with goats cheese is because it showed up on this salad labeled as goat cheese. This was a delightful salad, and I wish I had ordered just it instead of splurging on the cheese board also. Great combination of warmed tangy cheese, roasted vegetables, and sweet mango which was unexpected but worked well. - Guiness Beef Stew: My husband had this and loved it. I can say the portion was quite large and it looked very warm and comforting. - Fish & Chips: Large portion of fish and good chips. Husband liked it. - Broccoli Cream Soup: Yummy! Good little pub, we got a table right off. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I ordered the crab salad, made in house served with lettuce, onions, cucumbers, some beets, and some side dressing. The crab salad itself was excellent. My wife ordered only desert, which was a house made gluten-free Orange cake served with vanilla ice cream and cream, fantastic combination. I looked forward to having lunch at this Clifden establishment with my mom. We finally did so yesterday. The overall experience was disappointing. The service was lackadaisical, but I would ignore that had the food been better. I had the Chicken Goujons (€9.95) and immediately wished I had ordered something more interesting and appealing. However, the biggest disappointment was the Seafood Chowder (€5.95). It was bland, more like a soup, and it didn't have much seafood. It was the worst chowder we've encountered in a long time. Overall, we thought the lunch menu was uninspiring and we didn't learn about the specials until after we had ordered. Hopefully, our next visit will be better, but it won't be any time soon. read more

We were a party of 3 adults and we were advised to eat early if we didn't want a long wait for a table in this bar. No bookings you just arrive so we did and it was busy at 18.30. 2 of us had the fried hake, chips and mushy peas and the 3rd person had the Thai Curry. Server was very pleasant and food was served without any great delay. Both dishes were very nice and the batter on the fish was light and crunchy. I first came here in 2010, and I was warmed by the fireplace as I feasted on their curry chicken and fresh brown bread. I ate here several times in the past three months, and they never disappoint. I had one issue with the waitress charging me for a bill that belonged to another table, but the owners quickly rectified it. The Guys Burger is authentic local Connemara beef, organic vegetables and made with fresh cheese from Moran's Butcher shop down the street. The ambiance is great, and they carry Connemara Peat Smoked Single Malt! read more

Get there by 6p to get a table - the place filled up quickly even on a Monday - likely due to the live music that began about 7p. They don't take reservations. read more
